One of the best ways to differentiate ourselves as photographers is to fully engage in the creative process. As such, one sure-fire path to making more creative work is to experiment. Experimentation can help to unlock creativity and help us create more interesting work.  Since experimentation is something I think we can all learn more about, I was excited to record a podcast with one of my favorite photographers here in Colorado, Alfredo Mora. Alfredo works full-time supporting the NASA program and takes some absolutely splendid images, largely using experimental techniques. He placed third in the 2nd year of the Natural Landscape Photography Awards and has always impressed me with his modesty and level-headedness. On this week's episode, we discuss: How Alfredo got into photography. How Alfredo's background in architectural photography has helped him as a nature photographer. How Alfredo's cultural background has influenced his path and approach to making images. How Alfredo is able to balance a full-time job supporting NASA launches, a family, and his photographic pursuits. The importance of taking risks as a photographer. How Alfredo experiments with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), multiple exposures, and Photoshop blend modes to create unique images. How Alfredo's approach to making images has shifted from results-driven to experience-driven. The differences between being inspired and copying other people's photographs. Processes for releasing images to the public. Photography competitions. Writing and moderating the critique group for Nature Photographer's Network (NPN). And a lot more! Other topics/links discussed on the podcast this week: Support the podcast on Patreon. Join me over on Nature Photographer's Network and use the code "FSTOP10" for a 10% discount! Alfredo's article on his ICM blending techniques. Jon Norris - Joshua Tree workshops. Emily McCulliss' Storyboard. Watch podcast episodes on YouTube. Here is who Alfredo recommended on the podcast this week: David Ward. Michael Frye. Kevin Monahan. Klaus Axelsen. Jason Pettit. Kristin Weinhold. Elvis Dallie. I love hearing from the podcast listeners! Reach out to me via Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter if you'd like to be on the podcast or if you have an idea of a topic we can talk about. We also have an Instagram page, a Facebook Page, and a Facebook Group - so don't be shy! We also have a searchable transcript of every episode! Crowds. They can be riotous, violent, insurrectionist mobs, afraid of losing power and hellbent on throwing a prophet off a cliff. Or they can be boisterous, hope-filled, sleeves-rolled-up masses resolved to build a movement for liberation. We meet both kinds in Luke's gospel and in our nation, both past and present. Recalling Jesus' inaugural teaching in his hometown, and honoring the Rev. Welcome to Episode 148 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast.  This week's episode was recorded live at Out of Yosemite. I was lucky to be invited as an instructor and podcast host by the gracious Out of Chicago team. They put together a fantastic line up of instructors, activities, presentations, and excursions. Students and instructors were given the opportunity to interact and learn from each other in the birthplace of modern landscape photography - the Yosemite Valley. Ansel Adams' son and daughter-in-law were in attendance as well as two of Ansel's former assistants, Alan Ross and John Sexton. We had an all-star list of instructors spanning several decades and styles of work from film experts to the latest time-lapse and digital masters.  It was such an honor to be a small part of it.  On the final night of the conference I had the wonderful privilege to host a live podcast in front of about 40 people. Our panel included some fantastic photographers: Colleen Miniuk; Charlotte Gibb; Michael Frye; and, Alex Noriega. We covered a wide variety of topics, including: How do you find and apply inspiration in your photography? How has your photography evolved over time and why have you chosen to go the direction we have? How do we bridge the divide between the old school methods and new school methods of landscape photography? Why do you photograph? What are the positive and negative impacts of bringing large groups of people to the National Parks? What do you do when you’re not photographing and how does that influence your photography? What are the pros and cons of shooting alone vs. groups? What should students do after the conference? Over on Patreon this week, we have something special for listeners. Before the conference officially began, the instructors had a wonderful dinner and many drinks to celebrate the start of the conference and to get to know each other. After this dinner, Colleen Miniuk, Franka Gabler, Michael Shainblum, and Alex Noriega joined me for a drunk podcast recording. It was so much fun! Chris heads to Yosemite to talk with landscape photographer Michael Frye, who shares his best tips on photographing one of America's National Parks (it isn’t all about sunrise and sunset). Michael also shares his favorite Yosemite locations to shoot, and how to follow your passion rather than trying to compete with others or copying someone else. As Chris preps for his winter conference at the iconic California location, Michael explains what small scenes to look out for in over the colder season. He also shares post-processing tips, how he shoots in black and white, his favorite places in America to photograph, and composition techniques that can make you as great of a photographer as Ansel Adams. On following his passion: “I started to make better big landscape photos in Yosemite when I stopped worrying about [being someone else].” On preparation: “It always helps to know an area well before you photograph it.” On post-processing: “It really helps if you have a clear idea before you start with where you want to go with it.” On Ansel Adams: “Ansel was one of the first to really do it so well that it caught people’s imagination, to combine the elemental landscape with a particular moment in time. A particular moment when the clouds, light, and weather were just so. That creates this of a particular moment, but also in a strange sense, a sense of timelessness.” On composing: “The more specific you can be about what catches your eye, the better you’re going to be able to hone in on that, and find a composition that’ll work.” Find his course and book on MichaelFrye.com. You can also sign up for his blog by e-mail, featuring regular photography tips and stories.

Welcome to Episode 076 of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen with Charlotte Gibb! Charlotte spent her childhood romping around and exploring the wilderness areas in the mountains near her northern California home. The youngest of nine children, her father was an avid mountain climber and nature lover, and he made sure his kids were instilled with his passion for the outdoors. After he died in a climbing accident when Charlotte was very young, her mother continued to promote spending time in nature, ensuring that their vacations were spent outdoors camping, hiking and exploring. Charlotte studied journalism in college for two years and worked for her city's newspaper, at which point she discovered that journalism wasn't for her. She transferred to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and studied graphic design instead. She bought a used Beseler enlarger and turned her spare bedroom into a darkroom, where she spent countless hours in the dark happily experimenting with printmaking. In the years following art school, she went to work as an art director for an ad agency, built a successful design business, got married, raised two wonderful sons, and currently uses her camera to tell stories of the natural world.  We covered some great topics this week, including: 1. Yosemite Podcast Show Notes   Today we’re going to talk about photographing Yosemite, the national park that Ansel Adams made famous and one of my all-time favorite parks. I still remember getting goosebumps the first time I came down the hill on Big Oak Flat Road and the valley opened up before me.  I’ve been back many times since, but still remember that first time.  Most people only visit the valley floor which is only a very small part of the entire park, but it’s where the icons are and not to be missed.  My favorite spots are Tunnel View, Valley View and Glacier Point.  Pretty obvious ones I guess, but we’ll also talk about some of the lesser known spots too. The park itself is about a 4-hour drive east of San Francisco and southeast of Sacramento.  I always recommend people fly into Sacramento because of all the traffic in and around San Francisco not to mention the hassle of flying into San Francisco International. If you’re driving, you have more options depending on where you’re coming from.  I live in NW Nevada, so I prefer coming down Hwy 395 on the east side of the Sierra’s and going over Tioga Pass when it’s open which is usually sometime in May.  But if you’re in California or the Pacific Northwest, you will want to use either the Big Oak Flat entrance in the NW part of the park on Highway 120 or the South Entrance on Highway 41. The best times of year to be there are spring and winter in my opinion.  Spring for the waterfalls and wildflowers; winter for snow and clearing storms. Summer is less than ideal with lots of tourists and in most years the waterfalls are a trickle or not running at all.  There is some fall color in Yosemite usually in late October and early November, but the trees do not always change color at the same time. It’s a time for intimate landscapes along the Merced River mostly. So, a typical day in the park usually starts before sunrise and ends after sunset.  The best color is frequently a half hour before sunrise and up to a half hour after sunset.  For sunrise, you have to be there early not only for the pre-sunrise color, but also to get the best spot or any spot at all.  You definitely want to be there before the tour buses arrive. Likewise, at sunset you need to be there 45-60 minutes before official sunset to stake out your spot at Valley View, Tunnel View and Glacier Point.  Sunset light hits Valley View first and then Tunnel View with Glacier Point last because of the differing altitudes.  You can do Valley View and Tunnel View in one day if you don’t dilly dally too long at Valley View, but Glacier Point is at least an hour from the Valley Floor and a separate trip. The best time of day to photograph the various waterfalls like Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Fall and Vernal Fall is mid-morning for Yosemite Falls, mid- late afternoon for Bridal Veil Fall and mid-day for Vernal and Nevada Falls.  This is because Yosemite Valley sits in a deep canyon several thousand feet below the rim, so light does not strike the north rim until mid-morning and the south rim until mid-late afternoon otherwise these falls are in deep shadow.  The same is true of Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall because they’re in the Merced River canyon. I usually recommend people plan to spend at least five days photographing the park to allow for a couple of sunrises and sunsets at Tunnel View and Valley View and 1-2 sunsets at Glacier Point.  Plus time to drive to the Mariposa Giant Sequoia’s, Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point. Off the beaten path spots for sunset are Olmsted Point and Tenaya Lake.  There are great views all around at Olmsted Point, but my favorite is the one of Half Dome at sunset especially if there are some nice clouds to reflect the sunset light.  You can shoot from the parking lot here or climb the rock on the west side or north side for a different perspective.  Don’t forget to look behind you or to the east for sunset lit clouds or mountains. At the Tenaya Lake parking lot, you have to hike a hundred yards or less to the east to reach the lake front.  There is a flat rock extending out into the lake which makes a good leading line for the lake and the distant mountains as well as spot to put your tripod. Night photography at Olmsted Point can be productive.  You have good views to the south and west and there are Jeffrey pines for foreground material.  The best time for this depends on the phase of the moon and the time of moonrise.  Ideally, you want either a new moon or a quarter moon at most and shortly after moonrise time wise.  If the moon is too full or in the wrong part of the sky the stars are nearly invisible. One other popular option is a moonbow over Yosemite falls which works best under a full moon in April and May.  Fortunately, the best times are pre-determined every year by Donald Olson at Texas State University at www.donolson.wp.txstate.edu  A new moon or quarter moon also allow for night shots of the icons from locations like Valley View or Tunnel View. My favorite lenses in Yosemite are the 24-70 and 70-200.  The 24-70 for the grand landscape view.  But sometimes it’s more interesting to isolate parts of the scene for a different perspective.  My go to camera body for landscapes is the D4.  Not a traditional landscape body, but if I want more megapixels I can shoot panoramas. I always like to recommend Michael Frye’s book “The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite” available through my Amazon A-store and his Yosemite app available at https://www.michaelfrye.com   Another useful app is The Photographer’s Ephemeris for figuring out sunrise, sunset and moonrise.  Available for iOS, Android and pc’s. Another useful app for national parks are the National Parks by Chimani available for Android and iOS both.  Apps are free and available for all 59 National Parks. Also helpful is www.npmaps.com where you can download free NPS maps for each park. If you like to hike, http://yellowstonehikes.com is a great resource. Here are a few photos from Yosemite from myself and Bill Naiman:

A weekly look at father involvement in education through the Watch D.O.G.S. program of the National Center for Fathering. This past week, a letter was posted on the Watch D.O.G.S. Facebook page that went semi-viral. Michael Frye of Taylorsville, Kentucky put into words what so many of us feel about the Watch D.O.G.S. program. Join us as we hear Michael's words and his thoughts about why he felt strong enough to write these touching words about his family and their school. Also joining us this week will be Rick Shaw of Awareity.com. Rick will talk about school safety. Awareity's Founder and CEO, Rick Shaw has over 27 years of experience with managing risks, technology, processes, clients and people at both large and small organizations.  In addition to Rick’s experiences, hundreds of case studies, incidents and failures have played a key part in Rick’s vision and the development of Awareity’s unique and forward thinking tools and services that focus on People and Processes rather than systems and technology.  Rick has been a speaker at several government, financial and educational conferences as well as multiple industry association meetings. Rick has also been part of the Schools of Banking for the past several years helping bankers to better understand managing risks and challenges in a changing world. Dads of Great Students is a national program currently operating in 46 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Mexico and even China. Over 3000 schools utilize the fathers and father figures within their own community to enhance the environment and safety of their schools. Watch D.O.G.S. National Coordinator Keith Schumacher is the host of the show.
