Remember in elementary school, how some kids were so excited to answer a question that they would wave their hand back and forth in the air, lifting ever so slightly from their seat? The Hermione Grangers of 2nd grade. Yeah, that was me. So I have real sympathy for students who become discussion dominators. Though on the outside, this appears to make them successful students, it's really just as important for them to adjust their approach to group dynamics as it is for students who are completely silent in class. Both groups present a challenge for educators looking to use student-led discussion methods, and today on the podcast, I'm sharing everything I've learned about helping kids on both ends of the participation spectrum. Because in fact, helping one is helping the other. Quieter students won't have a chance to participate until dominant students take a step back. Dominant students won't understand why it's important to step back until quieter students begin to use their voice. The first steps are the hardest on both sides of this story, but it IS possible, and the results ARE so worth working for. This is the fourth episode of our discussion series, maybe the one you've been waiting for. Because we've all been in discussions carried by three kids while the rest watch, turning their heads like they're at a tennis match. But not anymore. Key Points: Try brainstorming with the class about ways to get into the discussion if you're feeling a little nervous or you like more time to prepare: ideas might include… be the first person to start a discussion or topic because you can read your question, quote, or answer to the warm-up, write down an idea as you read that you want to bring up, arrange with a friend to turn the floor over to you as they finish a comment, like “Jenny, we were talking about this before class. What were you saying?”, folks talking more have to make room for other voices Remind everyone of the bean bag story we talked about in the last episode - the discussion is incredibly enriched when everyone contributes their personal history and knowledge, their curiosity and questions Use the observer with nuance, asking them to think about how they can chart the discussion and report back with suggestions in a way that will help everyone improve the dynamics of balance Individual conversations - you might try gently inviting a dominator to try limiting themselves to three contributions or even just listening for a day to see what others say. You might talk with a quiet student and suggest a goal of one comment on a single day, and brainstorm together how to make it happen. It's a push and pull. As one group start to make small adjustments, the other group is affected. It never looks the same in any class! Try the ABC Game Think about all the group situations you're in day after day: faculty meetings, dinner tables, school board meetings, neighborhood potlucks. Chances are you know dominators and silent observers in your adult life too. Maybe they never had the chance to explore these group dynamics issues in school. This process is a gift you can give to a student for their future. In an increasingly partisan world, where everyone is talking about the bubbles we live in, what could be more important than learning to talk to each other? Whether you use Harkness, Socratic, or your own twist on student-led discussion, I believe these messy life lessons of student-led discussion are worth the complicated emotions and conversations they require. Welcome back to our ongoing discussion series. If you missed the first two episodes, covering five types of discussion worth trying and introducing the Harkness method for student-led discussion, you might want to pause and go back to the last two episodes before continuing with this one. Today we're diving deep into student-led discussion, specifically setting up a structure that will let you be successful. I'll be sharing both highlights from what I learned at the Exeter Humanities Institute about helping students be successful - which, by the way, I couldn't recommend more as a summer PD opportunity - and also, what I learned personally working with twenty-five different classes of students as their skills with the method evolved over the course of our year together. You'll walk away from this episode ready to run your first student-led discussion, whether you choose the full Harkness method or create your own twist on student-led discussion. Today we're talking about a model that influenced every discussion I ran in my classroom from my first year to my last, across grade levels, years, and countries. I've run hundreds of Harkness discussions - terrible ones, experimental ones, pretty ok ones, good ones, and absolutely incredible ones. Today I want to tell you how Harkness discussion changed the way I see group dynamics and why I can't talk about class discussion without centering this model. I want you to try Harkness, or some spin off of it that fits your classroom space and size, and here's why. Maybe you've heard me talk before about the new teacher conference I attended in Northern California when I was 22. At some point during that loaded weekend, someone handed me a sheaf of papers labeled “Harkness Discussions.” Inside, I found some example discussion charts, a summary of the model, and a dream. Harkness was originally developed at Philips Exeter Academy, where a philanthropist named Edward Harkness made a gift to the school that was channeled into creating and implementing a model of discussion centering student voices. It sounds pretty simple - students sit in a circle, ideally - but in practice rarely - around a large oval wooden table, and talk to each other in class. They face each other, look at each other, acknowledge each others' ideas, rather than all facing toward the teacher leading the way. By the time I started flipping through my packet in 2004, more than seven decades after that initial gift, teachers had been experimenting with and improving the model for a long time. I read everything I could find online, then decided to roll out a one month experiment in every class. I was waaay into experiments at that point, and my students were used to seeing my metaphorical jazz hands as I rolled out poetry slams, performance projects, transcendental showcases, and whatever else I cooked up late at night and on the weekend while I was working all. the. time. So they were game enough when I explained what we'd be doing. I showed them a picture of a discussion chart and explained that a student observer would chart each discussion and give a compliment and a recommendation for improvement at the end of the discussion (not mentioning specific names). I explained that my role would be to help them prepare in advance for the discussion but not to moderate it during the actual conversation. I warned them about the vast potential for awkward silence, promised that they'd get through it, and also promised not to ruin everything by rescuing them. We talked about what could make a student-led discussion go well. And then we started. During that first month of Harkness, I watched four different classes go through four very different evolutions. F block skipped the floundering stage and went right to the “we're awesome and we can rock this” stage. They had lots of kids who did the reading and wanted to talk, so after the initial observer comments that not everyone was talking (which is pretty much always the observer comment in every class in the first few Harkness discussions), things progressed quickly. With a little bit of help from me in chatting with observers before class, observations became more nuanced, and the class moved into the common next stages of Harkness, like helping students work on not interrupting each other, finding ways to subtly invite and support comments from students who were reluctant to speak, bringing more specific textual evidence into the conversation, making better transitions, and asking good questions. B block, on the other hand, floundered with the best of them. Maybe the trickiest transition into good Harkness that I ever saw over 25 different classes. Still, not to ruin the ending, but they got there by the end of the month. In D block I learned a lot about how to work with a slow-starting class. I integrated strategies like careful warm-ups to give students plenty to talk about, staring down at my notebook and writing “this is awkward” over and over again with careful focus during awkward pauses so that kids would know I wasn't going to rescue them, and helping guide my observer in positively reinforcing the smallest improvements and giving a specific focused goal that was achievable for the next discussion. That first month built the foundation to continue for the rest of the year, though we stopped integrating the method every single day. Harkness became our go-to discussion method, more like once or twice a week, which is how I continued into the next years. But that sense of the method as a living experiment, an evolution that never ended, stayed with me. The next year I surveyed my students about their experience with Harkness, and here are some of their comments: “I think I've always been able to share my thoughts, but I've definitely changed as a listener. I've learned how to pay attention.” “I have changed. I seem to like to talk a lot more than I thought I would have. Harkness has allowed me to gain confidence in myself and what I believe is right.” “Harkness teaches hesitant speakers to be more confident with their ideas. Conversely, it shows talkative people the value of listening to their peers' opinions.” “I have yet to feel like sleeping during a discussion.” “I've learned to think before I speak.” Over the years, I watched powerful transformations. Learned how to help silent students break in. Learned how to help dominators step back. Learned how to team up with my observers to chart dynamics relating to ever more complex factors in the room, like gender, friend groups, types of question, and topic transitions. I watched a brave young woman, our student body president, break down in tears after class as she realized for the first time that quieter peers she didn't think had anything to say had rich contributions to make when space was made for them. I watched emerging bilingual students realize others cared about their opinion and were willing to make space to hear it. Awkward silence became funny instead of scary. Wide-ranging student-led discussion became the norm. And that's where we're going to leave it today. Next week we're digging into specifics. Expect to see one episode in your feed Tuesday on setting up success and the role of the observer, and another on helping discussion dominators and silent students. I'll be coming at it through the perspective of Harkness, because that's the discussion country where I've got my citizenship, but you can apply similar ideas to Socratic Seminar or whatever spinoff of student-led discussion you prefer. If you've ever felt like you were stuck in a rut doing the same thing day after day, I've got a quick mindset shift to help. I do NOT want you to give up on whole class novels, so let's talk about how to make them work. In theory, whole class novels are the bread and butter of the English classroom. But if you struggle to get students to read at home and you're finding the daily routine of covering a few pages every day a total slog, I hear you. You might have heard me talk about this with Amanda from Mud & Ink Teaching last year on the pod, and I really appreciated her ideas, which, combined with hearing from lots of teachers trying to figure out how to run a whole class novel unit successfully, have led me to think even more about this. So here's my suggestion - create days of the week that are focused on different things, and give that whole class novel a break sometimes. Sounds pretty simple, right? Too simple? Hear me out. I've always been amazed at just how many things English teachers are supposed to cover, and going through every standard from 7th grade ELA to 12th grade ELA last year when I was creating planning materials for The Lighthouse just drove that point home. No doubt you're trying to figure out how to advance your students' work in vocabulary, writing forms, reading comprehension, public speaking, and listening. Plus, you're a creative teacher who wants them to be engaged in real world work with an authentic audience. Making a shift away from covering each night's reading the next day in class will help you move forward across your priorities, and give your students more time to read in between text-centered classes. Maybe on Mondays you spend fifteen minutes on choice reading and then you're working on podcasts related to the essential question of your whole class novel. Tuesdays you're doing a quick reading check-in activity and then a Harkness discussions on the chapters students have read across the previous few days on their own. Wednesdays might be focused on 15 minutes of choice reading and then writing practice, trying a variety of creative prompts around short stories, poems, audio clips, and articles related, again, to the themes of the whole class novel but read right there in class so you know everyone is on the same page. Thursdays might be a deep dive into the whole class novel with small groups or partners engaging in activities like close reading, reader's theater, mini-debates, theme one-pagers, or whatever else you're excited to do related to the novel. Then Friday could be for First Chapter Fridays, 15 minutes of choice reading, and some vocabulary work. This is just one imagined example of how you could structure a week with plenty of variety. The bottom line is, you don't need to talk about your whole class novel every day to DO a whole class novel. Go Further: Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. The character of Wanda Maximoff goes through a deeply emotional journey, reflecting the MCU's post-Endgame direction. Paul Bettany's Vision is a standout, delivering some of the series' best moments, balancing humor and deep introspection. The fan reaction to Evan Peters as Quicksilver sparked massive speculation about the multiverse and upcoming Marvel properties. Kathryn Hahn's performance as Agatha Harkness and the viral "Agatha All Along" song added to the show's charm, building anticipation for her spinoff. The WandaVision series set the stage for important future MCU developments, particularly Wanda's evolution in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Memorable Quotes: "WandaVision was so game-changing when it came out and revisiting it, I realized it still holds up—it's still freaking amazing!" – Frank "Paul Bettany's Vision, he's just trying to make sense of his own existence while helping others. On this week's mini-episode, I'm sharing the coolest discussion warm-up I've ever learned, which I picked up at the Exeter Humanities Institute one week after my first year of teaching and the same week that I met my husband. You're going to love it! As you know if you listen to the podcast much, my favorite discussion method is called Harkness, and it was first invented and pioneered at Phillips Exeter Academy. If you're interested in diving deep with Harkness, there are several past episodes you could explore, including number 8 and number 73. But today I just want to share this super simple discussion warm-up I learned there, which I've used and riffed off of dozens of times since and love. Here's the idea. As you roll out the runway to discussion, you invite students to write down a discussion question about the reading. Something they'd like to hear from others about - something that goes deeper than plot. Easy, and I know, not exactly revolutionary. But here's the twist. Then you have all your students put their questions into a hat, and pull out someone else's. They now have a new question to consider and contribute, and someone else is in charge of theirs. Now, you still might want to do a quick “turn to a partner and talk about your questions for two minutes” or even a quickwrite on the new question, but the main thing is, students will suddenly have a whole new motivation to bring up the question they're holding in the discussion. After all, they aren't putting their own question under public scrutiny. And I think they feel a little sense of responsibility to the person whose question they picked up. Now when you say “who wants to get things rolling by reading their question out loud?” there's very little to lose in kickstarting the conversation. Similarly, when the discussion hits a bump, and you encourage kids to continue it with new questions, you're more likely to have takers. It's such a simple idea, but I've loved seeing it play out in conversations in class after class, so this week, I want to highly recommend that you give it a try too. And then maybe dive a little deeper into Harkness yourself and see if you love it as much as I do. Maybe you'll even want to go to the Exeter Humanities Institute one summer too - it's pretty amazing, and I'm not just saying that because I met my husband there. Marvel Studios gave fans a real trick and treat by dropping the first Agatha All Along trailer on Monday. The peek at September's MCU show highlights Kathryn Hahn's return to the character Agatha Harkness, first introduced in WandaVision. We see Harkness awakening from Wanda Maximoff's spell and setting out to regain her power. While one of Matt Reeves' Elseworlds projects is moving forward, one is taking a step back. Reeves announced a Gotham police show in 2020, then it changed to focus on Arkham Asylum and has been through several directors and showrunners since. But as of now the show is no longer moving forward It was Marvel's Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum's turn in the hot seat on last week's episode of the Marvel Official Podcast. Winderbaum gave each of the upcoming television shows Marvel is working on some quick sound bites. He said “What If Season Three feels like the culmination of a trilogy.” Winderbaum alluded that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will have a teenage ensemble. He also said that Eyes of Wakanda ties into the MCU “more than any other animated show.” He said of Agatha All Along that it's really scary and it gets quite dramatic, but qualified the statement with “It's a Marvel brand of scary.” Of Daredevil: Born Again, he discussed how the dynamic between Matt Murdock and Kingpin won't just be about murdering each other, but the politics they find themselves in. Winderbaum Is “most excited” for people to see what they're doing with Marvel Zombies. Revenge is a dish best served hot and sweaty in the first trailer for Gladiator II. Boasting a star-studded cast that includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nelson, Paul Mescal, and Joseph Quin, the film appears to truly be a sequel to the Russell Crowe movie and pave its own path for a new story. On July 4th, Anthony Mackie took to social media to share a new photo from his forthcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World. The photo revealed a look at the Captain America suit Mackie will be wearing in the film. Despicable Me 4 ruled the Fourth of July box office with an estimated five-day domestic opening of $122.6 million dollars including a three-day weekend haul of $75 million after earning a stellar A CinemaScore. Globally, the film grossed $230 million dollars. Inside Out 2 held at number 2 and has now crossed $1.2 billion dollars globally. A Quiet Place: Day One held at No. 3 in its second weekend with a three-day gross of $21 million for an impressive 10-day domestic tally of $94.4 million. A24's horror slasher MaXXXine opened Friday and placed No. 4 with an estimated $6.7 million. The teaser for a new Formula 1 racing movie titled “F1,” starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley has dropped. The Apple Original Film is directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. A sequel to 2006's The Devil Wears Prada is in development with screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna in negotiations to return. After months of back-and-forth, Shari Redstone has finally agreed to sell control of Paramount Global to a consortium led by Skydance Media for a deal valued at $8 billion dollars. Apple TV released a trailer for Taika Waititi's re-imagined version of Time Bandits. The original film came out in 1981. Joel McHale says the Community movie should begin filming in 2025. The final season of Umbrella Academy begins on August 8. A trailer was released today. Director Sam Raimi is set to direct and produce a new horror thriller called Send Help. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift will write the script. New Girl star Lamorne Morris has been cast in Spider-Noir, the Nicolas Cage-led series that will premiere on Amazon Prime. Morris will play journalist Robbie Robertson. Brendan Gleeson has also reportedly joined the cast as the show's villain. The Conjuring franchise has set their fourth and final movie to release on September 5, 2025. in IMAX.
Historian and scholar Deb Harkness was studying the intersection of science and magic in history and the humanities, when she was struck by the trend of "vampire boyfriend" stories in books and popular culture. She asked herself, "What if there really are these creatures living around us? What do they do for a living? Why have I never met any of them? And would it really be a great thing to have a supernatural significant other? I don't think so... I thought, right now people can't handle the idea of two women or two men getting married, and yet we think we want a vampire boyfriend. What is going on?" These questions yielded the acclaimed historical fantasy series, "All Souls." The latest installment, titled "The Black Bird Oracle," is due out July 16. With ancestral ties to accused witches in New England, Harkness says she considers the book a "love letter to my Connecticut and New England ancestors." This hour, Harkness joins us to discuss. Comcast also announced a similar upcoming bundle that will offer Peacock, Netflix, and AppleTV+ at a discount price. Prime Video's animated Batman series, Batman: Caped Crusader, executive produced by JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm, will premiere all 10 episodes on August 1. Today I want to talk about a subject I'm sure you've thought a lot about - how much are you willing to do for your job? And what do you do when you've hit your wall? I want to start by taking you to the dusty steps of the duplex I shared during my first year of teaching. It's dusk, and I'm crying. I recently won the award for excellence in new teaching at my school, receiving many hugs and congratulations, as well as a raise and kind compliments from my head of school. I should be feeling great, right? I had discovered so much that year in my quest to engage my 10th and 11th graders - how to run Harkness discussions, hold poetry slams, launch play performances, find the gold on the teaching shelves of the Los Angeles Public Library. I had given it everything, and truthfully it had given me a lot back. But I was thinking of quitting. Utterly exhausted, I sat on those steps wondering if I could possibly continue in a career that took this much. Could I continue to work from 7 am to 10 pm? Could I continue to think about my job everywhere - in the car, with my friends, at the beach? Could I find love and family if I was always in my classroom, the dorm, or coaching on the tennis court? Wiping my eyes, I ran up those dusty stairs and into my office to find a piece of paper. I made a list of 23 rules for myself. The boundaries I would have to hold if I wanted to continue in the career I loved. I took everything else off my bulletin board and put the rules in the middle. Then, I stayed in teaching. And though honestly I'm not sure I was ever better at it than that first year when I made it my whole life, I found that my boundaries helped me enjoy my work as a creative teacher for many years. Until one night almost a decade later. It was nearly midnight and I had had THE WORST day. Up early to prep something or other, then racing from class to class all morning before taking my advisees out for a special lunch that had been requested by my residential life boss which made me late for a lunch meeting with my 10th grade honors students participating in the portfolio program that had been requested by my academic boss. Then more classes, coaching, a school dinner, an evening of working in the dorm and I was home at 11 with some work to do for the next day. I stared and stared at my computer screen as the rage built up in my mind and eventually led me into my email inbox to open a note to my head of school. You can probably imagine it. I kind of wish I still had it. I just let allll my feelings out, which isn't very common for me. I woke up to a response inviting me to a meeting right away. My rage having subsided a bit, I felt awkward when I walked into that wood-paneled office in the administration building. Nothing helps you tap into how you really feel better than a 16 hour workday, and I told my head of school I wasn't sure I could really capture it all again. He laughed a little awkwardly and said the email did a very good job. We talked for a while, and in the end, he took a huge part of my spring workload off my plate. OK, so these are two very different stories about the same thing. Hitting the wall. Thinking about leaving the profession. I can't pretend to know all the circumstances you're facing right now, but I'm seeing a lot of folks in our community struggling. If you're hitting a wall like I have, for reasons of your own, see if you can tap into your feelings and try to create a pivot point. It could be personal - like my list of boundaries. Maybe instead of quitting, you radically change how you grade, refuse to give up your prep period, stop agreeing to join committees, only check email twice a day, and commit to taking weekends off. Or it could be a line you ask to draw in the sand with your boss - like my midnight letter (though I suggest you approach it more coherently than I did). If you need a change, is it possible you could get one through a letter or a very serious conversation with someone at your school, rather than a new job? If you want to stay but you're thinking of leaving, is it at least worth a try? I want to see you enjoying your creative classroom and loving your work, and I know there are a whole lot of societal factors making that really hard right now. If you've hit a wall that can't be overcome, I get that. Maybe you want to transfer your amazing skills to another path. But if you want to be in the career you're in, but you too have cried in your own version of the dusty stairwell and questioned everything at the end of your own version of the unbelievably overwhelming day, maybe there's a step you could take toward change. And this week I just want to highly recommend that you take it.
