Later, Matt discusses how he finds his own unique shots to differentiate himself as a photographer, what motivates him to shoot, and what he's learned from his own podcast, F-Stop Collaborate and Listen (https://www.mattpaynephotography.com/page/f-stop-collaborate-and-listen/) . This week we're joined by street photographer Steve Simon, who just released a revised and remastered edition of his book, The Passionate Photographer (https://www.amazon.com/Passionate-Photographer-2nd-Bestselling-Photographers/dp/178157636X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+passionate+photographer&qid=1560442972&s=gateway&sr=8-1) . After Steve kicks off the show by turning the tables on Chris, the discussion turns to the ever-evolving business of photography and how The Passionate Photographer fine tunes his skill set. Steve touches on the benefits of emulation and how stealing an idea won’t capture what the original photographer aimed for. Creating a unique image requires shooting personally, and Steve strives to find the best in even a bad image (One of many Simon-isms: “Not a deal breaker!”) Another Simon-ism is “emotional metadata,” which is when you look at an image and can’t escape that you were there in order to be objective. On a related note, Steve discusses if an image should represent what you’re feeling in the moment. The conversation also turns to Steve's favorite cities for shooting street photography as well as the new Nikon Z6 / Z7, a mirrorless camera. Visit http://www.ThePassionatePhotographer.com for portfolios and workshops, and pledge to his Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/stevesimon) to receive more help.

On this episode of F8 | The Photographer's Perspective (new name!), Chris is joined by landscape photographers Rick and Susan Sammon, who discuss their new book, "The Oregon Coast Photo Road Trip (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NZ2FG2C/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1) ," all about points of interest and how to shoot the area. Rick will be a featured instructor at Out of Oregon (https://www.outofchicago.com/oregon/) this October. The Sammons discuss the benefits of shooting on an iPhone instead of a DSLR, and the importance of bringing backup equipment (even if it means doubling the weight of your bag). They also share tips on shooting seascape photography (Safety first!) and the secret to shooting long exposure photos on an iPhone. Rick also teases us about his next photography book, which will notably be void of any photos inside. Be sure to visit Rick's website, (http://ricksammon.com/) his Costa Rica class on Kelby One (https://members.kelbyone.com/course/rsammon-costa-rica/) , and Susan's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/subee100) . Jackie also shares her favorite gardens up and down the eastern seaboard, her favorite equipment (she's all Canon), and the one tool every photographer can't leave home without. She also discusses photographers who inspire her. On the late Nancy Rotenberg: “I looked at who she was and what she did and how she touched so many people. It made me feel something inside that I never really felt before. She was a genuine person, she touched people in a very authentic way.” On Clyde Butcher: "He underscores the importance of getting to know your home. Shooting where you live and getting to know your home is so much more important than any eternal quest to shoot that iconic photo somewhere else, because what you can bring to the equation is where you live.” You can find Jackie at Luv Blooms (https://www.luvblooms.com/) and Jackie Kramer Photography (https://jackiekramerphotography.com/) . Also be sure to check out her Phlorography group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/phlorography/) .
Chris heads to Yosemite to talk with landscape photographer Michael Frye, who shares his best tips on photographing one of America's National Parks (it isn’t all about sunrise and sunset). Michael also shares his favorite Yosemite locations to shoot, and how to follow your passion rather than trying to compete with others or copying someone else. As Chris preps for his winter conference at the iconic California location, Michael explains what small scenes to look out for in over the colder season. He also shares post-processing tips, how he shoots in black and white, his favorite places in America to photograph, and composition techniques that can make you as great of a photographer as Ansel Adams. On following his passion: “I started to make better big landscape photos in Yosemite when I stopped worrying about [being someone else].” On preparation: “It always helps to know an area well before you photograph it.” On post-processing: “It really helps if you have a clear idea before you start with where you want to go with it.” On Ansel Adams: “Ansel was one of the first to really do it so well that it caught people’s imagination, to combine the elemental landscape with a particular moment in time. A particular moment when the clouds, light, and weather were just so. That creates this of a particular moment, but also in a strange sense, a sense of timelessness.” On composing: “The more specific you can be about what catches your eye, the better you’re going to be able to hone in on that, and find a composition that’ll work.” Find his course and book on MichaelFrye.com. You can also sign up for his blog by e-mail, featuring regular photography tips and stories.
