In this episode, I discuss how white your snow should be on a print. There's a lot of high-key photography in which the majority of the image is pure white. Snow, without texture and tone in a print, will appear pure white and can often look unreal. Meanwhile, the actual scene may have been overcast, rendering the snow greyer or bluer. Wildlife paintings often render snow as grey or blue. Enchantingly illustrated by Stuart Patience, Alison's book takes us on a global tour of some highly peculiar and fascinating fungi across a 24-hour period. Amy's current favourite; the Hairy Nuts Disco (Lanzia echinophila) lives in the spine of a chestnut and is based in Europe – take a look for yourself! Or go on a tour with Alison in person and attend one of her workshops, fungi forays, talks, and other events this autumn between April and June. In this episode, I offer a strong opinion about why the 'People's Choice Award' is a bad idea in photographic competitions. Such categories are never won by the 'best' photograph in class but are invariably taken out by whoever can scream the loudest on social media, 'Vote for Me!' This approach is the exact antithesis of why anyone should be entering a photographic competition, and such categories do little to foster the promotion of quality photography. Entering photography competitions should (if we enter for the right reasons) be about improving our work, growing as photographers through the feedback of our professional peers and competing against ourselves, and not worrying about social media popularity.Support the showWild Nature Photo TravelPhotography Workshops and Expeditions around the Worldwww.wildnaturephototravel.comSupport the Show and fellow Nature Photographer: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JoshuaHolko/membershipFind us on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Joshuaholko/Twitter: https://twitter.com/HolkoJoshuaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuaholko/Need to Contact us? info@jholko.com

In this episode of Get Real or Die Trying, host Amadon DellErba sits down with Jonathan Buford — wilderness photographer, master brewer, entrepreneur, and co‑founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company — for a raw conversation about land, business, conservation, and what it really means to live in relationship with place.Jonathan shares his journey from starting a small service business and homebrewing in his garage to building Arizona Wilderness into a nationally recognized, conservation‑minded brewery rooted in the desert landscapes of his home. Together, Amadon and Jonathan explore how the way we grow, make, and consume things mirrors our relationship to land and community — and why any meaningful “wilderness ethic” has to show up in our everyday choices, not just our weekend hikes. This conversation dives into sacred commerce, storytelling through beer, the soul of the Sonoran Desert, localism, and the hard lessons of building a mission‑driven company in a profit‑driven culture. Jonathan speaks candidly about failure, risk, and humility, and about how photographing all of Arizona's wilderness areas reshaped his understanding of public lands, responsibility, and what it means to belong to a place.Weaving together ecology, entrepreneurship, creativity, and cultural renewal, this episode reveals why protecting wild places is inseparable from how we do business and how we treat each other. It points to a future where beer, art, and stewardship are not separate lanes, but one path toward a more alive and attentive way of living. If you're ready to rethink what “success” looks like, question extractive business models, and explore what real stewardship looks like on the ground in the American Southwest — this conversation will leave you challenged, inspired, and invited to take responsibility for your own corner of the world.#jonathanbuford #arizonawilderness #sacredcommerce #getrealordietrying

Andy shares how he transforms everyday settings – whether a quiet retention pond or the bustling ZooTampa – into unforgettable works of art. His signature style of clean, focused photography invites viewers to pause, breathe, and see the world a little differently. More than just a conversation about photography, this episode is about creativity, authenticity, and the joy of finding beauty in unexpected places. When photographer Jonas Paurell set out to explore the relationship between humans and the natural world, he embraced a practice that moves fluidly between art, documentary, and environmental storytelling. His images are rooted in a deep engagement with place—whether remote mountain landscapes or fragile ecosystems—and they reflect both an aesthetic sensitivity and an ecological urgency. Jonas's work doesn't simply document the environment; it raises questions about belonging, responsibility, and how our presence shapes the land we inhabit. That journey has led to long-term projects that blend collaboration with communities, careful observation, and a visual language that feels both timeless and immediate. Rather than leaning on spectacle, Jonas turns toward intimacy—capturing the quiet tension and beauty that emerge when people and nature meet. The result is a body of work that challenges us to reconsider not only how we see the world but how we live within it. In this episode, Claude shares his fascinating journey working on a photography project in the remote Brooks Range of Alaska. He delves into the considerable challenges faced, from the high costs of flying, to securing permission from indigenous communities. At nearly 68, Claude proves that age is no barrier, bringing determination and problem-solving prowess to his craft. He discusses the profound impact of focusing on fewer locations, resulting in deeply meaningful photographs of the Sierra and the Brooks Range. Our discussion touches on creative interpretation in photography, the artistic process of creating woodblock slipcases for his book, and the delicate balance between exploring broadly versus delving deeply into specific places. Claude also highlights the significance of intentionality in both photography and life, reflecting on the importance of spending time wisely and experiencing the present moment. He introduces us to a variety of photographers to learn from and offers insights into the meticulous process of creating a compelling photography book.
