I also omitted a discussion surrounding the print quality (jetlag at my end). In this episode, I touch on some recent Travel Photographer of the Year competition news and dive into a really interesting email I received last week from a regular reader and follower of my work, the crux of which is included below:'Hey Josh, You know I love your photography as this isn't my first email :-). You have a unique minimalist style that really sets your work apart; its truly wonderful that you not only find and create such amazing photographic art in this insane world but that you help others also achieve their photo dreams. But something has been bothering me and its these other workshop leaders who seem to be copying everything you do. I have followed you for years and watched you lead unique first of their kind trips for Arctic Fox, Greenland winter, Pallas Cat in Mongolia and more. I have also watched others copy exactly what you do. I am sure you are aware of it, but I get quite annoyed on your behalf when I see these others market themselves as 'the first', or 'class leading' or whatever term they choose to use. I have no idea if it bothers you, but I hope you continue to look forward and not back. Keep up the incredible work. I know there are many others out there who feel the same as me about your work and how you are being copied. I just wanted you to know you had some support out there and that we have your back."Firstly, thank you so much to the author for the wonderful words about my own work. Hugely appreciated. After I received this email, I had to think long and hard about how I felt about this topic. I had a subsequent follow-up email discussion with the author, and we both decided that this topic was worthy of a podcast. It's bound to be somewhat divisive, and perhaps that's what is required at this juncture? I am unsure, and I certainly don't want to come across as arrogant, but what I do know is that I have no rear-vision mirror of consequence for those who choose to follow in this field. I have always looked forward, and I believe it's firmly up to the person choosing and booking a workshop, whether they want to go with someone who chooses to lead in their field - or someone who follows the crumbs. Every person can and should decide who they travel with and why. Just one of the many reasons it's so important to do your homework when booking any trip. As they say, onward, forward and ever upward....Support the showWild Nature Photo TravelPhotography Workshops and Expeditions around the Worldwww.wildnaturephototravel.comSupport the Show and fellow Nature Photographer: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JoshuaHolko/membershipFind us on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Joshuaholko/Twitter: https://twitter.com/HolkoJoshuaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuaholko/Need to Contact us? info@jholko.com

Lelkesedése és fáradhatatlan alkotása számtalan elismerésben és díjban mutatkozott meg, a teljesség igénye nélkül 2019-ben elnyerte például a Nature Photographer of The Year elismerést, a Golden Turtle fődíját, a világ egyik legnagyobb fotóspályázata, a Cewe Award első díját, 2023-ban pedig az Asferico fődíját illetve a Close Up Photographer of The Year elismerést. Jó szórakozást kívánok hozzá!-------------FONTOS:A wopcast-et támogathatod Patreon-on és egyszerű utalással is. .Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/wopcast.Az utalás ide érkezhet:Kocsány Kornél - CIB Bank10700495-62634067-51100005------------Csabáról bővebben:https://daroczicsaba.hu/https://www.instagram.com/daroczicshttps://www.facebook.com/daroczi.photography . In this episode, I look back at the incredible year 2024, the travel, the countries, experiences, and photographs, and I look forward to travelling and participating in workshops in 2025. 2025 kicks off in just a few days with travel from Australia to Mongolia for back-to-back workshops for Pallas Cat and Snow Leopard in both the far east and west of this amazing country. This will be quickly backed up by two back-to-back Arctic Fox workshops in the far north of Iceland. It's promising to be a huge year, and I am super keen to get underway. If I had to sum up 2024 in one word, it would be ‘gratitude.' I am grateful to have shared my passion for photography with many like-minded individuals. I am likewise grateful for a safe and prosperous year and for the incredible experiences throughout the year. My sincere thanks to all who travelled and participated in one of my trips this year; it was beautiful to have such fantastic shared experiences. It was an incredible year of travel and photography that sometimes left me breathless at the pace and intensity. Don't forget to check out my twelve favourite photographs for the year HERE.Last and certainly not least, I wish all of you a very safe and happy New Year, and may 2025 be one of health, happiness and one of travel, amazing light, and experiences for all of you. I have just published episode 104 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I discuss my thoughts on the new Canon EOS R5 MK2 camera now that I have had an opportunity to use the camera in the Arctic for several weeks of intense photography (Eastern Greenland and South Western Iceland). I first tested the camera back in September in Australia over three days of landscape photography down the Great Ocean Road. During this shoot, I was photographing only from a tripod and had not yet shot handheld with the camera in my preferred polar environment. My initial impressions from this shoot in Australia were all positive, and I was very keen to get the camera up to Greenland to see how it performed. After shooting with the camera in Eastern Greenland and Iceland for the last three weeks, I have (perhaps surprisingly) concluded that this camera is not for me. The files are excellent at low to moderate ISO (ISO800 and below) but fall far short of those from the EOS R3 at ISO800 and above. Since most of my photography is at moderate to high ISO (typically 800 and above), this is a significant factor in my decision-making process. Of more importance, however, is that the ergonomics of the EOS R5MK2 just don't suit my size hands or my style of shooting. It is a wonderful camera that will undoubtedly make many people happy - but it isn't for me. This week, we're coming to you with a LIVE! Getting Curious episode with THE preeminent nature photographers in the game about the risk and reward of their art, their conservation efforts, and how they support each other in the process like the power couple they are! In 2014 she, alongside her partner Paul Nicklen, co-founded SeaLegacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a healthy and abundant ocean through powerful storytelling and impactful visual media. Through her lens, she conveys the delicate balance of natural ecosystems and the urgency to preserve these habitats that sustain a myriad of life. Her art, driven by a desire to make a difference, serves as a compelling call to action, illustrating the transformative power of photography in raising awareness and inspiring change. Paul Nicklen is a Canadian photographer, filmmaker, and marine biologist who has documented the beauty and plight of our planet for more than thirty years. Nicklen is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and aligns with Rolex's Perpetual Planet initiative on collaborative efforts to preserve the natural World. Nicklen has won more than 30 of conservation and photography's most prestigious awards, including the BBC's Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the World Press Photo for Photojournalism. F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Welcome to another episode of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen. Today, we're thrilled to have the incredible photographer Claude Fiddler join us. In this episode, Claude shares his fascinating journey working on a photography project in the remote Brooks Range of Alaska. He delves into the considerable challenges faced, from the high costs of flying, to securing permission from indigenous communities. At nearly 68, Claude proves that age is no barrier, bringing determination and problem-solving prowess to his craft. He discusses the profound impact of focusing on fewer locations, resulting in deeply meaningful photographs of the Sierra and the Brooks Range. Our discussion touches on creative interpretation in photography, the artistic process of creating woodblock slipcases for his book, and the delicate balance between exploring broadly versus delving deeply into specific places. Claude also highlights the significance of intentionality in both photography and life, reflecting on the importance of spending time wisely and experiencing the present moment. He introduces us to a variety of photographers to learn from and offers insights into the meticulous process of creating a compelling photography book. Join us for an enriching conversation about artistry, perseverance, and the love for specific places. This is an episode you won't want to miss! Resources Mentioned: 1. In this episode, I discuss a technique you can implement to use your telephoto lens as a spotting scope when out in the field (avoiding the need for either binoculars or a dedicated spotting scope). Additionally, my thoughts on picking up the latest cover of the July / August edition of Wildlife Photographic magazine (along with a feature article on Emperor Penguin photography) and winning three highly coveted Gold awards (and two Silver with Distinctions) at the recent Australian Photographic Prize in Melbourne. I also have a short rant about the current state of YouTube inspired by a comment tweeted by my friend Craig: 'You Tube is a Cancer'. In this episode, I discuss the consumption of Nature vs, appreciation of Nature after a recent, somewhat sour 'tourist' experience during a tour in the Cango caves in South Africa. Apologies in advance, but I somehow managed to screw up the numbering of these podcasts and refer to this episode as number 89 during the recording when it is, in fact, episode 99. That was most probably jet lag.Support the Show.Wild Nature Photo TravelPhotography Workshops and Expeditions around the Worldwww.wildnaturephototravel.comSupport the Show and fellow Nature Photographer: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JoshuaHolko/membershipFind us on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Joshuaholko/Twitter: https://twitter.com/HolkoJoshuaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuaholko/Need to Contact us? info@jholko.com
On this episode of Looking Outside we discuss the evolved art of photography and its role in capturing the state of nature and wildlife as a form of conservation, with nature photographer and conservationist, Derek Nielsen. A photographer for more than 20 years, Derek's journey to capture images from across each continent of the world started with curiosity; his passion for global travel prompted him to bring a camera wherever he went. Soon, this became a mission with a sense of responsibility to be an ambassador for the wildlife and nature degradation that can't speak for itself, through his photos. Fearless since he was a child, Derek has been driven throughout his life by a calling to see things that are less comfortable and unnerving. He describes this as a “free fall of curiosity” that followed his passion for and companionship with nature. And prompted him to do more than just record and observe.Derek's describes how photographers are storytellers today, tasked with providing more to their audience than beautiful images or documents of facts, but to move them through stories that they otherwise wouldn't have the ability to hear. Derek's stories incentivize people to do small or big action in support of the conservation cause; whether it's a monetary donation or simply picking up their trash. One story Derek shares is in a moment of connection with a baby chimpanzee while he was visiting the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda. The moving photo that captures the moment they locked eyes helps Derek tell a story of wildlife protection – and therefore inspire future photographers and donations. He says it's in this way that photographers can play a bigger role in the world than garnering likes on social media. Having travelled to more than two dozen countries, Derek has seen some haunting things, and explains how important hope and optimism is in not becoming overwhelmed by the deterioration of the world, desensitized to problems, or disconnected from every day life back home. He seeks this out by surrounding himself with people who are kind and with the things that are driving positive change, not just with things to be outraged by.>>>To look outside, Derek finds play. Whether it's Ping-Pong with his wife, a dog wrestle, or messing around with his nieces and nephews. Play re-centers him back to family and the things that are important in life. He calls this both instant happiness and a non-negotiable.>>>Derek Nielsen is a conservation-driven fine art photographer of nature and wildlife who wants to inspire the world to fall in love with nature. After 20 years behind the lens, Derek's journey to capture, share—and ultimately help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent, from Rwanda's endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. His images and storytelling educate people about important conservation topics. With an emphasis on what is worth saving, he brings large-format fine art prints of beautiful landscapes or exotic animals to people's homes and offices so they can enjoy the benefits of nature daily.Find more at dereknielsen.comFollow Derek on LinkedIn, Instagram.>>>Looking Outside is a podcast dedicated to exploring fresh perspectives of familiar business topics. Dudley Edmondson is a gifted nature photographer with a passion for telling nature's story through his books and images. He's also a Black Man in America, and wrestles with all that that means as someone who often feels more comfortable in the wild than he does standing in his own front yard. Listen to his story--and think about what it means.

In my Wild Nature Photography Podcast's latest season (season 4) for 2024, I wrap up my just completed January Pallas Cat expedition to Mongolia's eastern Steppe region in Winter. I will have a full written trip report on this expedition in the next few days, along with some photographs, but I wanted to get my initial thoughts down in a podcast while they are still fresh in my mind (2023 Trip Report). I will be returning again to the far east of Mongolia to lead a workshop to photograph these amazing cats in January of 2025. The expedition will run from January 4th to January 10th 2025, and is for those photographers looking to get out into the wilderness to photograph these incredible felines. You know those images that show up on your Apple TV or Chromecast when the TV's on, but you're not watching anything? That's how I found Aravind. Time and again, I found myself sitting, watching, and enjoying his images so much that I asked him to be on the podcast. Great photographs are hiding in plain sight everywhere. Often, we limit ourselves to only making photographs of the literal or obvious; however, there are techniques that exist such as Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) that can help us uncover more while invigorating our photographic journey. Today's guest on the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast, Kaisa Siren, is a photojournalist by day and an ICM expert as her passion. We explore how ICM can help photographers "Visualize the Unseen." On this week's episode, we discuss: How Kaisa got into photography. What it is like being a photographer at the arctic circle. Kaisa's freelance journalism. Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) techniques. Comparing and contrasting ICM with photojournalism. How to make better ICM images. And a lot more! Niche communities exist for the purpose of providing education, resources, and a sense of belonging. The need for these communities is greater than ever in our age of polarization on social media and the impersonal interactions often found there. In the nature photography space, no better community exists than on Nature Photographer's Network (NPN). On today's podcast episode, I sit down with the owner of NPN, David Kingham, and the Editor for NPN, Cody Schultz, to discuss photography communities, critique, and the launch of Nature Vision Magazine. On this week's episode, we discuss: The meaning of community as it relates to nature photography. The value of belonging to a community. The benefits of becoming a member of Nature Photographer's Network, and a discussion on what has changed at NPN as of late. The value of critique and how to get the most out of it. Connecting with our audience in a community such as NPN. Outdoor Photographer Magazine's demise and how Nature Vision Magazine seeks to fill this void.
