How does a former goalkeeper from Holyhead end up coaching at AC Milan? How did he get a role as an extra in the film Mike Bassett: England Manager? What's it like sharing a room with Neville Southall while on Wales duty? Tony Roberts has all the answers as he joins Carl Roberts and Iwan Roberts to look back on his incredible football journey and looks ahead to Wales' crucial Euro 2024 play-off with Finland.
Episode four already?! Guy and Rob are building up a head of steam and are joined for the first time by a guest. TV Writer Steve Dunne chips in with his thoughts on the 2001 football fan favourite Mike Bassett: England Manager. Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England's savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we'll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined. We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film's major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. But does this film work on any level if not being watched by someone who is already a football fan? On this episode of the podcast, we hear from filmmaker, Steve Barron. This fella was behind the music promo videos for The Jam's Strange Town, When You're Young, Going Underground and Dreams of Children... This was all pre-MTV... in a world where Top of the Pops wanted as-live performances rather than music videos. He also happened to create some of the most-watched music videos of all time, we're talking "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits and "Take On Me" by A-ha as examples. These films defined the medium during the early days of MTV and are still considered among the best of all time. The videos for "Take On Me" and "Billie Jean" have each garnered over 1 billion views on YouTube.Steve has also directed several films, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Coneheads (1993), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996) and Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

ENGLAND WILL BE PLAYING 4-4-2! Didn't that quote used to have a swear word in it? Anyway, it may not be the most popular of movie but it allows us to gift to you our FIFA World Cup special: Mike Bassett: England Manager. This British cult classic features a football song classic: "It's On My Head, Son, Not Off My Head, Son" by Keith Allen and Atomic Kitten. Ben is in a bottomless pit of despair, Dietrich wants a bowl of Michael Owen cereal and Alex hates Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. In the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Chris has picked the 2001 mockumentary-style comedy, Mike Bassett: England Manager. Directed by Steve Barron and written by John R. Smith and Rob Sprackling, this stars Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Redman, Bradley Walsh, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Geoff Bell. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: The manager of England's national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett, a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Bassett insists that England will win the World Cup under his leadership, but that's before he replaces his star player with a once-gifted footballer who has since developed a drinking problem, and hired a one-time car salesman as his assistant. After stunning losses to Poland and Belgium, Bassett goes from a favorite of both fans and the press to one of the most hated men in England; hoping to whip his team into shape, he subjects them to the high-tech training methods of eccentric Dr. Shoegaarten, which injures more players than it helps. Despite Bassett's ineptitude, England manages to qualify for the World Cup tournament thanks to group opponents Turkey losing their final game, and he flies to Rio with his team in hopes of somehow turning their bad luck around. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

Episode 56 is here, and this week, Liam and Rob are looking back at what was, at the time at least, the biggest independent movie ever made. From the director of Mike Bassett: England Manager (no, really, it's from the same guy), comes the definitive live action interpretation of one of the biggest IPs of the last 35 years. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a much better movie than you probably remember. Based on the original comics by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird rather than the hugely popular cartoon that followed, this is ultimately a much darker and far more grounded take on the characters than we are now used to - the Batman Begins of Turtle movies if you will.
Books and TV series have kept me sane during the past few years. Two series that pop into mind are The Durrells in Corfu and, more recently, Around the World in 80 Days. As the credits rolled by, I smiled when I saw Steve Barron's name pop up as episode director multiple times. My mind drifted back to the 80s when I'd been lucky enough to work on a few music videos Steve directed out of Limelight Production in Los Angeles. Steve was one of the good guys, a gentleman who didn't scream or pout, and due to his background in the camera department, he understood and appreciated film crews. Steve Barron started in films as a camera assistant on epic productions such as Richard Donner's Superman, Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far and Ridley Scott's The Duellists. He began directing what were known in the UK as promotional videos in the early eighties for bands such as The Jam, Human League, and Adam & the Ants. In 1982 he conceived and directed the award-winning Billie-Jean music video, the first single from Michael Jackson's incredible Thriller album. More seminal videos followed, and at the 1986 MTV Awards, Steve's work was acknowledged when Dire Straits' Money for Nothing won Best Video, and A-Ha's Take On Me was awarded Best Director. Steve's cult classic film Electric Dreams was released in 1984. His second film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1986), stunned the industry by becoming the first independent feature to break the $100 million theatrical mark. Steve directed other features, including Coneheads, Rat, Mike Bassett: England Manager, and TV network mega-series Merlin, Arabian Nights, Dreamkeeper, and Treasure Island, all garnering him a slew of awards, including 27 Emmy nominations, 5 Gold Globe nominations, and a DGA nod.Oh, and he's also a hemp farmer!Steve Barron IMDBEGG N CHIPS & BILLIE JEANAround the World in 80 DaysThe Durrells in CorfuSupport the show (https://paypal.me/TheBookshopPodcast?locale.x=en_US)

On the latest episode of Beyond the Touchline, Seb, Dave and Denis play four-four-f**king-two as we look back at Steve Barron's 2001 film Mike Bassett: England Manager. Poorly marketed and lukewarmly received, how does the film hold up these days? We explore the veracity of the football world it creates, its satire of an entire generation of English football, the debt it owes to documentaries like The Impossible Job, and just how good we actually find it on a pure comedy level.
