Episode 5 of Britcom Goes to the Movies. Rob and Guy are on a Busman's Holiday (not On the Buses yet thank God) as they research the writing team of Steve Coogan and Henry Normal. A chance to fanboy the shit out of things as this episode is on 2001's The Parole Officer. Although memories of the movie aren't completely favorable, both Rob and Guy are huge Coogan and Normal fans. The Parole Officer's genesis seems to lie in Coogan's Run and Paul and Pauline Calf, so expect some deep dives into those shows. The Parole Officer was Coogan's first feature-length writing credit and featured breakthrough appearances from Lena Headey and Stephen Dillane, making episode 5 a must-listen for Game of Thrones completists. Is The Parole Officer capable of knocking Mike Bassett off the top spot of the Britcom goes to the Movies chart or will we think it's a bag of shite. Tune in to find out. Episode four already?! Guy and Rob are building up a head of steam and are joined for the first time by a guest. TV Writer Steve Dunne chips in with his thoughts on the 2001 football fan favourite Mike Bassett: England Manager. Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England's savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we'll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined. We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film's major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. Mike Bassett is living proof that good people sometimes do bad things. In his case, that bad thing was signing a box of fraudulent checks that nearly caused him to lose his law degree, his reputation, and his family. His 2021 book, "The Man in the Ditch,” details his path to reconstructing his reputation and learning how to forgive himself. On this episode of Beyond the Prescription, he describes his incredible redemption story with Dr. McBride. They discuss the dangers of "black or white thinking” in health, in life, and on the path toward self-compassion. Mike offers hope to anyone down in the ditch — whether they landed there after a traumatic event or they dug the ditch themselves. In the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Chris has picked the 2001 mockumentary-style comedy, Mike Bassett: England Manager. Directed by Steve Barron and written by John R. Smith and Rob Sprackling, this stars Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Redman, Bradley Walsh, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Geoff Bell. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: The manager of England's national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett, a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Bassett insists that England will win the World Cup under his leadership, but that's before he replaces his star player with a once-gifted footballer who has since developed a drinking problem, and hired a one-time car salesman as his assistant. After stunning losses to Poland and Belgium, Bassett goes from a favorite of both fans and the press to one of the most hated men in England; hoping to whip his team into shape, he subjects them to the high-tech training methods of eccentric Dr. Shoegaarten, which injures more players than it helps. Despite Bassett's ineptitude, England manages to qualify for the World Cup tournament thanks to group opponents Turkey losing their final game, and he flies to Rio with his team in hopes of somehow turning their bad luck around. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

Mike Bassett, Senior Partner, The Bassett Law Firm joins Dr. Bill Kanasky, Jr. and Dr. Steve Wood to talk about early case management, the timing of working up a case, and what is best to do first and early. Early case management sets the tempo and helps gain momentum for the defense. Mike shares how in the first 30-60 days of a case conducting focus groups always him to know what resonates with jurors and what doesn't and the value of interviewing witnesses early. Mike talks about how defense attorneys need to educate their clients and carriers on why they need to be investing in this early case management, research, and witness prep. There is significant, tangible value in having juror perspectives while discovery is still open and before witnesses have testified. The plaintiff's bar tests cases at an exponentially higher rate than the defense bar and will test discrete issues to learn what will resonate with jurors. Bill, Steve, and Mike also discuss the characteristics of strong plaintiff attorneys: always pushing the file; always have a plan; develop their themes early; focus group cases early; create maximum risk and leverage in every deposition; are detailed oriented and very prepared. Myndir mánaðarins, Basti Fantasti og kemst Manchester United á útsölur í glugganum?
The shortcomings of the English football team is a mystery that has brought pain to the home of the beautiful game, whilst providing unlimited comedic pleasure to those benefiting from the export, for over half of a century. The most lucrative league in the world, a noughties team that looked more like a World XI on paper than a national team and even some of the world's biggest names in management have failed to answer the ongoing question. Why do England always fall short?Following the heartbreaking exit in Italia 90 which was followed by a disastrous 1994 campaign in which England failed to achieve World Cup qualification, pained England lover and comedian Rob Sprackling had had enough. Over the next seven years, together with writing partner John Smith, Sprackling assessed the reasons as to why the Three Lions were forever destined to mediocrity. The iconic character Mike Bassett is a personification of their findings. A film that deals with more than the game of football itself, Bassett satirically portrays the the role of English society in their inability to repeat their famous feat of 1966. A patriot who refuses to change his ways, the cornered Bassett bites off much more than he can chew and his time as England boss did not just ring true in 2001, but proved prophetic to anything related to English football in the pre-Southgate era. As creator of one of UK comedies most quotable film characters of modern times, Rob Sprackling offers fascinating insight into not only Bassett, but also the film industry as a whole. Episode 56 sees the screenwriter sit down with The Michael Anthony Show to discuss his career, life and future. A true man of comedy, Sprackling's views make for great listening.Episode Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other podcasts platforms.Support the show (https://open.spotify.com/show/0sP68DtD7qCl4Rs2wGKJD4)

Sixteenth episode of the Fantasy Football Surgery Podcast, join the band of surgical misfits as the speed bump that is game week 30 approaches. Laced with big hitters but with the potential to throw out the balance of teams, resulting in later hits, the panel propose a mixed approach. Is this the week for the Mike Bassett 4-4-2 philosophy? A debate breaks out over the Leicester back line bringing to the surface once more the rivalry between Parker and the Beard. Can the whispy ginger tickle of Beard's mind games continue to gain him ground on the champion in waiting? Or will an iron nerved Parker hold his position? Man City feature heavily before a number of eyebrow raising differentials are thrown into the mix. The Iceman is at his statistical best as he blinds the team with science and math! Captains choice draws a division between the panel. Kun provides the ever present option but once more the Iceman has a startling proposition! He did call Arnie in gameweek 28 though so it may be worth a punt. Finally the quiz provides an opportunity for Parker to get off the mark. With the risk of Cattermole becoming ever more real as the end of the season approaches, will he buckle under the pressure? All this and the usual self-esteem crushing banter on episode 16 of the Fantasy Football Surgery!!! Baptized into Story at a young age, he fed himself on Speed Racer, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Marine Boy sprinkled with a generous dose of dinosaur picture books. When he was thirteen, he read Bradbury's essay "How to Keep and Feed a Muse" and knew he had to be a writer. When he was fourteen, he started writing stories of his own and by fifteen, he had started his own Rejection Slip Collection. After a long break away from writing, Ken returned to it after logging time as a sailor, soldier, preacher, musician, label gun repairman, retail manager and nonprofit director. He sold his first story to Talebones Magazine in 2000 and won the Writers of the Future contest in 2004. His quirky, offbeat fiction continues to show up in various magazines and anthologies like Polyphony 6, Weird Tales and Clarkesworld Magazine. In 2006, his short story "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing with the Sunrise" appeared in the August issue of Realms of Fantasy. Later that year, inspired and taunted by his friends and family to finally write a novel, Ken extended that story and Lamentation was born. Lamentation is the first in a five book series from Tor Books called The Psalms of Isaak. He has since also written Canticle, Antiphon, and Requiem in that series.Ken lives near Portland, Oregon, with his amazing wonder-wife Jen West Scholes and their twin daughters: Elizabeth and Rachel.
