Back in 2020, some of farmer Steve Barron's cattle fell ill and died. Initially he had no idea what had caused their sudden deaths until lead poisoning was found to be the reason. He tells Mark about what happened and the impact it had on him.Steve's cattle died so had no chance of entering the food chain, but Food Standards Scotland take incidents of livestock poisoning very seriously. They are raising awareness of the risks that farmers face as we hear from their head of incidents, Stuart McAdam. In our latest Scotland Outdoors podcast Helen Needham talks to musician and composer Anne Wood about how her own heritage led her to write music inspired by the mountains of Pakistan and Assynt. We hear an excerpt where they discuss the idea of home.Earlier this week a film documentary premiered in Edinburgh made by director Tom Opre called The Last Keeper. The film explores the land-use conflicts of Scotland and features interviews with a range of people who live in, work in and manage the countryside. Rachel went to interview Tom and find out what was involved in making the film.Mark takes a wander round the darker side of Edinburgh's medical history with a tour guide from the Surgeons' Hall Museum. He hears about the grizzly business of barber surgeons and the advancements made in medical science in the city. This weekend the British Divers Marine Life Rescue charity which helps rescue stranded and entangled cetaceans and seals are holding a big training exercise off the Ayrshire coast. We hear live from one of those coordinating the exercise to find out what and who is involved. An obscure fungus which had until recently been relatively rare in Scotland appears to be at the centre of an outbreak in Scots Pine trees across the country. Dr Sarah Green from Forest Research tells Rachel more about it.Mark visits an area of woodland in the centre of Haddington that a group are keen to take charge of via a community asset transfer. They tell him about the history of the site and what they hope to happen to it.Over the last few weeks, we've been discussing the changing seasons and what feels like the late arrival of spring. While Rachel was visiting the Montrose Basin Reserve, she chatted to Joanna from the Scottish Wildlife Trust about which species are heading off and which are arriving
This week Bryan and Dave are joined by Aileen Clark of the Uy Que Horror podcast to take a trip back in time to 1990 when Turtlemania ruled the preteen scene. We explore the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles phenomenon through the lens of Steve Barron's bizarre adaptation that struck closer to the dark indie turtles comics of the mid-80's than the colorful pizza-obsessed party dudes of Saturday morning cartoons. Does the movie hold up to modern scrutiny? Well, not exactly, but it's a fascinating franchise, nonetheless. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message
Farmers have been gathering in London's Parliament Square to protest about what they feel is a lack of support for British food production. Organisers said they have three demands: first, a ban on what they see as 'dishonest' labelling where food imported and processed in Britain can be labelled as British; second, they want the UK to withdraw from the Australian and New Zealand Trade Deals; and third, they want a clear plan for 'food security'.Herring used to be a mainstay of communities up and down the west coast of Scotland. In the early 1900s Scotland was producing 2 million barrels of herring a year, but by the 60s and 70s, stocks of herring had been over-fished and collapsed. Since then, they've struggled to return, but a huge new spawning ground has been spotted by satellite. And, hemp has traditionally been used to make hardwearing textiles - things like ropes and canvas for sails. But it can also be used to build houses using a material called hempcrete! Film-maker, Steve Barron, who's best known for directing music videos, bought some farmland back in 2017, and decided to "grow his own home".Presented by Anna Hill Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

Somehow, this show managed to even turn crime into Christian propaganda. Fill your house with Christmas cheer OR ELSE! On Christmas morning of 1999, in Tyler, Texas, Carla and Steve Barron were shot in their bed, with only their 17 year old daughter surviving. This is a true crime episode covering Homicide for the Holidays, Season 1 Episode 4. Watching the episode is not necessary, but probably recommended. It's COMFORT FOOD selections all month long and we're getting nostalgic on Mondays so it's Bob's turn and he picked a movie that he was so unbelievably excited for as a child that we can say with all honesty that, for the rest of his life, he was probably never as excited for anything as we was excited for the feature film debut of “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES” back in 1990. Directed by Steve Barron with some fantastic animatronic and puppet effects by Jim Henson's Creature Workshop. It's hard to imagine that studios were so resistant to turning this property into film but, of course, it was a tremendous hit. It's still a sight to behold even if it's even cornier than you might remember. Plus you got a rat (pre-mutated by goop) practicing martial arts in a bird cage. And that Foot Clan lair??? No wonder New York was so gripped in this crime wave. The criminals got to skateboard all day and smoke cigars. What more do you need to inspire a life of crime? I'll take the whippings from the Japanese men for unlimited arcade plays. I don't care. They can whip me anytime. Cowabunga. Directed by Steve Barron, the movie revolves around Beldar (Dan Aykroyd) and Prymaat (Jane Curtin), two extraterrestrial beings known as Coneheads who crash-land on Earth. Adapted from the iconic SNL characters, the film masterfully combines humor, wit, and a heartwarming story. As Beldar and Prymaat struggle to fit into the human world, they adopt the surname "Conehead" and attempt to lead a typical American life in suburban New Jersey. With their distinctive cone-shaped heads, they garner attention and curiosity from those around them. However, their peculiar behaviors, M-shaped "removable" teeth, and the challenges of adapting to human customs make for uproarious situations. The movie takes a comedic turn when the couple's daughter, Connie (played by Michelle Burke), is born with a perfectly shaped human head. As the Conehead family finds themselves in danger of being discovered by the Men in Black-like agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, they must confront their own conceptions of identity and protect their daughter from an uncertain fate. With its hilarious moments, tongue-in-cheek commentary on immigration, and spot-on performances by Aykroyd, Curtin, and a talented ensemble cast, "Coneheads" remains a cult classic. The film manages to be both absurdly funny and charmingly relatable, reminding us of the importance of embracing our differences and finding a sense of belonging, no matter our origin.More on BAD CHANNELS (1992):In the wacky world of B-movies, "Bad Channels" holds a unique place as a 1992 sci-fi horror musical that defies all expectations. Directed by infamous B-movie maestros, Ted Nicolaou and Charles Band, this cult classic takes viewers on a mind-bending journey into an otherworldly television station where chaotic madness unfolds. The film revolves around a demented alien broadcaster named Vernon Locknut, who possesses the ability to abduct and control human's minds through their television screens. When a small town's radio station, KDUL, is purchased by the mysterious Channels Unlimited, things take a wild turn. Vernon Locknut and his mischievous minions hijack the airwaves, turning the channel into a portal for abductions. As the townspeople become entranced and drawn into their televisions, it's up to a resourceful DJ named Dan O'Dare, the station's program manager, and an eccentric tabloid reporter, Lisa Cummings, to put a stop to the mind-control madness."Bad Channels" immerses viewers in a bizarre blend of genres. From alien invasions and body snatching

A coming of age drama about four adopted brothers, and the surrogate father who raised them as his own. Their fear of rejection from society, and their father's haunted past, keep them hidden away from the outside world, though they long for a life of normalcy. With a passion for culture, the arts, and Italian cuisine, they hope to one day be able to experience the joys life has to offer, while being accepted by the citizens of New York City…. oh, and they just happen to be KICK-ASS NINJAS! That's right, this week Gavin and I are reviewing one of greatest comic book/martial arts/independent films ever made, the ORIGINAL ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'! Directed by music video maestro Steve Barron and backed by martial arts production royalty in the form of Golden Harvest, this totally tubular 90's ninja flick is not your typical, franchise based film adaptation. Witty and lighthearted, yet equally as dark and gritty, this slickly shot and dynamically executed martial arts extravaganza is so much more than just a family friendly feature. With brilliant camerawork, editing, lighting, and a kick-ass score to boot, TMNT ascends genre cliches, and elevates itself to the level of a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster! Groundbreaking costumes and effects help accentuate the mesmerizing, visceral action of the turtles, whether they are battling Shredder and the Foot Clan, or dancing and chowing down on some delicious pizza! With how much of a personal influence the Ninja Turtles and this film in particular have had on us, this episode was an absolute blast to record! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy! Cowabunga dudes!

On this episode of the podcast, we hear from filmmaker, Steve Barron. This fella was behind the music promo videos for The Jam's Strange Town, When You're Young, Going Underground and Dreams of Children... This was all pre-MTV... in a world where Top of the Pops wanted as-live performances rather than music videos. He also happened to create some of the most-watched music videos of all time, we're talking "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits and "Take On Me" by A-ha as examples. These films defined the medium during the early days of MTV and are still considered among the best of all time. The videos for "Take On Me" and "Billie Jean" have each garnered over 1 billion views on YouTube.Steve has also directed several films, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Coneheads (1993), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996) and Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kids growing up in the late 1980s/early 1990s had almost no choice but to love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. From their love of martial arts to their passion for pizza, those heroes on a half-shell were a legitimate cultural touchstone, thanks to their animated series and, yes, the 1990 motion picture that brought the turtles to the big screen for the first time. Jackson Boren helps us kick off a whole new mega-series as we skateboard through the turtles' cinematic history, beginning with a chat all about that very first movie. We'll discuss where director Steve Barron's original vision could've taken the movie, how it splits the difference between the Mirage comics and the animated show, and why it still holds up so damn well. So pick up a slice, sharpen your sai, and prepare to stomp out the Foot as we geek out about 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Cowabunga indeed. The ""Billie Jean"" single reached No. 1 in 10 countries in the spring of 1983, including seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 - becoming the second-highest selling single in America that same year."Billie Jean" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on April 4, 1983, and Platinum on February 4, 1989. The song won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance - Male, as well as an American Music Award for Favorite Single - Pop/Rock and was also named the Single of the Year on The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll in 1983.The short film featured a paparazzo attempting to photograph Jackson as he danced through an urban landscape. A specially created set featured steps and sidewalk tiles that lit up underneath Michael's feet. It is here that fans first saw some of Michael's best-known dance moves, such as spinning and landing on his toes. Many of Michael's steps and mannerisms in the video would become forever associated with The King of Pop.When the chorus hit.he sprung into this dance that was unlike anything I'd ever seen, director Steve Barron recounted of Jackson's choreography in the video. "It was just extraordinary, instinctive. He pulled it all together and turned it into what we saw.The camera literally steamed up, the eyepiece steamed up, because of my heat from what I was seeing." Barron also recalled the crew breaking into spontaneous applause after Michael finished dancing. The "Billie Jean" short film made history as the first video by a black artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, then in its second year. In 1992, the short film was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. MTV ranked "Billie Jean" as the 35th greatest music video of all time in 1999, one of three entries of Jackson's on the chart alongside "Thriller" and "Beat It."#MichaelJackson #BillieJean #ThrillerTHE 80's MONTAGES FLASHBACK AUSSIE COMMERCIAL M&Ms Australian Ad 1980s - Today's TV Commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwZ9mf0FJcoPrince - Little Red Corvette (Official Music Video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KpfrJE4zw"Little Red Corvette" from '1999' (1982)☔️ Listen to more Prince here https://lnk.to/PrinceStream Watch all the official Prince videos here http://bit.ly/PrinceVideography Subscribe to the Prince channel and “ring the bell” to turn on notifications http://bit.ly/SubscribeToPrinceFollow Prince:☔️ Website https://prince.com/ Prince Store https://store.prince.com Facebook https://www.facebook.com/prince/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/prince/ Twitter https://twitter.com/princeExplore the Official Prince Playlists:The Prince Videography http://bit.ly/PrinceVideographyPrince: Live Performances http://bit.ly/PrinceLiveOnYouTubePrince ♡ Music is Medicine https://bit.ly/MusicIsMedicinePrince / MPLS https://bit.ly/PrinceMLPS#PrinceRogersNelson #Prince #Prince4EverBananarama - Cruel Summer (Official Video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9ml3nyww80Bananarama - Cruel Summer (Official Video)Listen to “Cruel Summer” - https://Bananarama.lnk.to/CruelSummerGet your vinyl copy of the album "Bananarama" released 1984 - https://Bananarama.lnk.to/AlbumStoreIDFollow BananaramaFacebook https://Bananarama.lnk.to/FacebookInstagram https://Bananarama.lnk.to/InstagramTwitter https://Bananarama.lnk.to/TwitterStore https://Bananarama.lnk.to/StoreLondon RecordsFacebook https://londonrecords.lnk.to/FacebookInstagram https://londonrecords.lnk.to/InstagramTwitter https://londonrecords.lnk.to/TwitterYoutube https://londonrecords.lnk.to/YTSubscribe#Bananarama #CruelSummerNENA | 99 Luftballons [1983] [Offizielles HD Musikvideo]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpu5a0Bl8eY#nenavideos #99luftballons #99redballoons #original▶︎ https://www.nena.de▶︎ https://shop.nena.de/▶︎ Den NENA Youtube Kanal kannst du hier direkt abonnieren: https://nena.lnk.to/yt-sub▶︎ https://www.instagram.com/nena_official▶︎ https://www.facebook.com/NENAofficial▶︎ NENA auf Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3GoiJyG▶︎ NENA auf Apple Music: https://apple.co/2Zrrc2Y▶︎ NENA auf Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3Bp4m9s ▶︎ NENA auf Deezer: https://deezer.com/artist/2211Spandau Ballet - True (HD Remastered)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR8D2yqgQ1UOfficial video of Spandau Ballet performing 'True', the title track from their 1983 third album 'True'. 40 Years - The Greatest Hits out now @ https://lnk.to/SpandauBallet-GH40Spandau Ballet are one of Britain's great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. This week, Pop Screen is taking you to Spatula City with this episode about America's pre-eminent polka-crazed pop parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic and his 1989 film UHF. Prior to this month's parody biopic Weird - in which he's played by Daniel Radcliffe, in Radcliffe's second era-defining role after Swiss Army Man - this was Al's only major motion picture. But that still leaves decades of recordings to discuss, and that's why Al superfan Jeff Pizek is back on the podcast to help bewildered Briton Graham get to the meaning of Al. Along the way, we discuss the film's inspired casting - including a chance to appreciate the comedic skills of a couple of people who, let's say, don't get the roles they used to? For very specific reasons? - its connection to The Simpsons, its vision of small-town America, and indeed the vexed question of where UHF is actually set. Is it a small town at all? We also pose a question about Dire Straits's Money for Nothing video which we forget to answer on the podcast, so let's do it here: Steve Barron. You're welcome. If you want to keep us making podcasts with this kind of polish and professionalism, I guess, you can donate to our Patreon where you get an exclusive episode every month. The next one comes out in early December, and it's a two-parter... You'll also get Rob's reviews of great Asian movies that have been overlooked by UK distributors, and Graham's twice-weekly Doctor Who reviews. In the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Chris has picked the 2001 mockumentary-style comedy, Mike Bassett: England Manager. Directed by Steve Barron and written by John R. Smith and Rob Sprackling, this stars Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Redman, Bradley Walsh, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Geoff Bell. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: The manager of England's national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett, a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Bassett insists that England will win the World Cup under his leadership, but that's before he replaces his star player with a once-gifted footballer who has since developed a drinking problem, and hired a one-time car salesman as his assistant. After stunning losses to Poland and Belgium, Bassett goes from a favorite of both fans and the press to one of the most hated men in England; hoping to whip his team into shape, he subjects them to the high-tech training methods of eccentric Dr. Shoegaarten, which injures more players than it helps. Despite Bassett's ineptitude, England manages to qualify for the World Cup tournament thanks to group opponents Turkey losing their final game, and he flies to Rio with his team in hopes of somehow turning their bad luck around. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support
Cowabunga Dudes! This week we're eating pizza in the sewer with a giant rat, hitting on a news reporter a whole species out of our league, and taking down the foot clan, all while discussing the 1990 classic ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' with the help of Seth and D.T. from Space Castle! Langen and Bobby Herbeck, it stars Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas with the voices of Brian Tochi, Robbie Rist, Corey Feldman, and Josh Pais. "You were expecting maybe the Addams Family?" After years of covering romantic love on the podcast, we're shifting gears by exploring sibling love, and we're doing that through the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Donatello, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Raphael - the four brothers raised by their Master Splinter in the art of invisibility. Insert the obligatory, "Cowabunga!" Our new four-part (maybe five-part, stay tuned) series begins with the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie directed by Steve Barron, written by Todd W. Langen and Bobby Herbeck, and starring Judith Hoag, Elias Koteas, and a whole heap of actors, performers, and puppeteers as the brothers. When discussing the best comic book movies, the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film must be in the conversation. However, why are we starting with the first cinematic adaptation rather than the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comic books? The answer is simple. Our love affair with the Turtles began with the film, and it led us to the comics, which will be the subject of our next episode in our TMNT series. Our love expert guiding our conversation with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be Dawn Huebner, PHD and her book "The Sibling Survival Guide: Surefire Ways to Solve Conflicts, Reduce Rivalry, and Have More Fun with your Brothers and Sisters." Also joining us in this week's episode is our friend and TMNT obsessive, Bryan Young, aka "The Turtle Dork." Bryan has spent a lifetime contemplating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they've had a profound impact on his person. We discuss how his relationship with these characters has evolved and what lessons they still have to teach him today. When you're done with this episode, please follow Bryan Young's adventures on his Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Page, and Website. Two years ago, Kevin Eastman briefly joined the podcast for a quick conversation about the Turtles. So, technically, our TMNT Counseling Sessions began there. Books and TV series have kept me sane during the past few years. Two series that pop into mind are The Durrells in Corfu and, more recently, Around the World in 80 Days. As the credits rolled by, I smiled when I saw Steve Barron's name pop up as episode director multiple times. My mind drifted back to the 80s when I'd been lucky enough to work on a few music videos Steve directed out of Limelight Production in Los Angeles. Steve was one of the good guys, a gentleman who didn't scream or pout, and due to his background in the camera department, he understood and appreciated film crews. Steve Barron started in films as a camera assistant on epic productions such as Richard Donner's Superman, Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far and Ridley Scott's The Duellists. He began directing what were known in the UK as promotional videos in the early eighties for bands such as The Jam, Human League, and Adam & the Ants. In 1982 he conceived and directed the award-winning Billie-Jean music video, the first single from Michael Jackson's incredible Thriller album. More seminal videos followed, and at the 1986 MTV Awards, Steve's work was acknowledged when Dire Straits' Money for Nothing won Best Video, and A-Ha's Take On Me was awarded Best Director. Steve's cult classic film Electric Dreams was released in 1984. His second film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1986), stunned the industry by becoming the first independent feature to break the $100 million theatrical mark. Steve directed other features, including Coneheads, Rat, Mike Bassett: England Manager, and TV network mega-series Merlin, Arabian Nights, Dreamkeeper, and Treasure Island, all garnering him a slew of awards, including 27 Emmy nominations, 5 Gold Globe nominations, and a DGA nod.Oh, and he's also a hemp farmer!Steve Barron IMDBEGG N CHIPS & BILLIE JEANAround the World in 80 DaysThe Durrells in CorfuSupport the show (https://paypal.me/TheBookshopPodcast?locale.x=en_US)

This week we sat down with Steve Barron, a filmmaker best known for directing the music video ‘Billie Jean' for Michael Jackson and ‘Take On Me' for a-ha. More recently, Steve took over 50 acres of farmland, in an effort to contribute something good to the world. After much research and thought, his contribution turned out to be organically farming hemp. At his Margent Farm in Cambridgeshire, Steve was able to build his farmhouse, a carbon-negative building, constructed from the hemp grown in the surrounding fields.Stay tuned to learn how Steve Barron built his house from hemp, the perils of farming and how hemp might the innovation material of the future! Our show notes are packed with links and extra information.
