Twenty-seven can be a pivotal and tumultuous age. It's held up as the year of peak performance in many sports and it's also seen as a cursed age for pop and rock stars, exemplified by the so-called 27 Club. Artists like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, all died at 27. As part of our series, The Greatest Numbers of All Time, IDEAS producer Chris Wodskou makes the case for a number that may not stick out in your mind but is more significant than you think.More episodes in this series:Listen to 12 is SublimeListen to The Curse of 13Guests in this podcast:David Awosoga is a PhD student in Statistics at University of Waterloo and sports performance data analyst.Alan Cross is a music historian, broadcaster, and host of The Ongoing History of New Music podcastDianna Kenny is a professor emerita of psychology and music at University of Sydney and psychotherapist in private practice.Michael Owen is a retired clinical psychologist and author of The 27 Club.Maria Westerstahl is senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

On this episode of the Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett turn their attention to the biggest tournament in football as the World Cup finally gets underway. In Sign of the Times, the pair discuss the growing number of brothers representing different countries at international level, from the Williams brothers to the Boatengs and Fletcher twins, and what it says about modern football and national identity. They also debate whether football now employs too many coaches, why set-piece specialists are becoming increasingly influential, and whether relentless PA systems are ruining part of the matchday experience. Martin's Letter From The Gantry is a journey through nearly five decades of World Cup memories, from his first tournament in Argentina in 1978 to Mexico, Italy, France, South Africa, Russia, Qatar and now North America. Along the way he recalls commentary disasters, accommodation mishaps, Diana Ross's famous penalty miss, and what it feels like to arrive at a World Cup for the 14th time. Neil then puts Martin in the hot seat for Martin Tyler's World Cup, exploring the greatest teams, players, matches, and moments he has witnessed across football's biggest stage. From South Korea's remarkable run in 2002 and Morocco's modern fairy tale, to Michael Owen's emergence, Peter Shilton's longevity, and the unforgettable Germany v Italy semi-final of 2006, Martin shares stories from a lifetime spent covering the game. The episode concludes with They Used To Be Giants, focusing on Italy. The four-time world champions are once again absent from football's biggest tournament, prompting a discussion about how one of the game's great powers fell so far and what the future might hold for the Azzurri. A World Cup special packed with memories, opinions, history, and anticipation from two men counting down to kick-off. This is Ollie Watkins reflecting on a journey that very few footballers ever experience - opening up on going from League Two and non-league football to scoring one of England's biggest goals in recent history. Chilling with Rio in his Airbnb, Watkins reveals why he still thinks about those early days every time he walks out for Aston Villa in the Champions League.Despite becoming one of the Premier League's most consistent forwards, Watkins remains hugely grounded throughout this conversation - discussing the impatience that drove him early in his career, the responsibility he felt during Steven Gerrard's time at Aston Villa and why Unai Emery completely changed the standards and mentality within the squad. There's fascinating insight into the mentality of elite strikers too, including why Erling Haaland's role is “so difficult”, how studying Ruud van Nistelrooy helped develop his instincts inside the box and why Harry Kane's leadership is more about standards than shouting.Watkins also explains the challenge of being used as an impact substitute for England and reveals the voice note he sent to friends before his huge semi-final goal after growing frustrated on the bench. The pair also discuss Thomas Tuchel's arrival as England manager, why the squad are already buying into his demand for more arrogance and confidence, and how nobody in the camp can beat him at table tennis. Plus brilliant stories and insight on Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden and why Watkins believes criticism of Gareth Southgate was completely unfair. There's also a brilliant look into dressing room culture and player personalities - from fashion disasters in the France squad and ping-pong battles at England camp to why Michael Owen's advice means more than anybody else's and the underrated qualities that make Ezri Konsa such a difficult defender to play against.Brought to you in partnership with Airbnb #ad Hosted on Acast. This week Sam & Natalie are joined by returning guest and former Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan, Bolton & England forward...EMILE HESKEY!Emile Heskey sits down alongside Sam Allardyce and Natalie Pike to discuss all things football from Liverpool's recent recruitment to what it was actually like going away with England. They start the pod by talking about Emile's two son's Jaden and Reigan Heskey who both recently made their first team debuts for Manchester City and whether Emile prefers playing the game himself or watching his two boys play.Marc, Sam & Natalie then chat in detail about the recent Michael Owen vs Wayne Rooney debate with Emile explaining why at that age no one could even get close to Michael Owen's ability but then later as an all round player, Wayne Rooney was incredible.Emile then ranks the toughest England centre backs he faced as a striker including who doesn't get enough respect for their technical ability and why Martin Keown was so dirty to play against.Emile & Sam then talk about Steven Gerrard's recent comments about their England team being a squad full of 'egotistical losers' and why Emile thinks that being locked away in their rooms for hours at a time ultimately lead to England's downfall in the major tournaments before discussing why England duty occasionally felt like the Gary Neville show. The Trio discuss Liverpool's recent recruitment, why Arne Slot needs to solve his attacking issue and find a way to play Isak and Ekitike together before discussing online social media culture, the impact KSI's old FIFA videos had on the perception of Emile Heskey's career and why unfortunately player abuse wont end. Finally we end the pod with a game of winner stays on as Sam and Emile pick their best Premier League forwards.

Steven Gerrard is the latest guest who sits down with Rio to show a different side of them that's not been seen before on camera. He picks out two English midfielders that he'd love to go toe-to-toe with and details all of the reasons why the national side weren't successful during his time as an international footballer. The Liverpool and England legend is honest about what went wrong whilst managing Aston Villa and also analyses some of the recruitment decisions taken by the Liverpool hierarchy when he was there as a player which he says the club got “badly wrong”. There's amazing insight into what drove his ability to wrestle control of games, candid reflections on negative moments from his career and he carefully analyses some of the highest profile midfielders he played with and against including Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Xabi Alonso. And, he gives his say about the debate that former team mate Michael Owen sparked on a previous episode - who's better between him and Wayne Rooney. Hosted on Acast. The Sunday Session kicks off with the legendary Mike Sheahan, before we move into the time we were supposed to talk to a legend but called the wrong person! Billy reflects on his daughter Ruby's wedding, and GWS Captain Toby Greene calls in as the Giants get an early bye week. Billy has some astronaut news, JB strafes the MRO and Tribunal, and we have a very controversial and chaotic Hump Day Quiz. Finally, to celebrate St Patrick's Day last Monday, we revisit Billy's very fruity Irish joke.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Then they dig into a recent article on acoustics by one of audio's most popular personalities to learn what's better: a lousy speaker in a good room or a good speaker in a lousy room. They conclude with a deep dive into—surprise!—an article about hi-fi published in a mainstream scientific magazine, which recommends a whole new (well, kinda new) speaker layout.
