[School of Movies 2026] Back in 2021, after a surprising 24-year absence of Mortal Kombat live action movie adaptations while several really great cinematic story modes played out on the past four entries of the video game series, a movie finally emerged. It wasn't very good. But since we were all on lockdown and starved for entertainment many of us chomped it down like Baraka at a buffet. Then, five whole years later a sequel emerged that actually delivered on the basic, underachieving proof-of-concept that was pitched to us in that excuse for a first movie. Entertaining, grisly, a bit too self-conscious and at times historically inaccurate, this made for a fun time at the cinema and now we actually look forward to more. We watched the original two movies, we talked about the video games before and we watched the new one when it came out in 2021. We had to do it and honestly you may not be expecting the takes we came out with. What did we think? Well listen and find out! Anywhere you get podcasts!

Ignored when it was released, Grandma's Boy became one of the quintessential stoner comedies of the 2000s. For good reason, it's very funny, doesn't take itself at all seriously, and features some top-tier performances from up and coming actors — including Nick Swardson and Joel David Moore. Listen, this isn't high art. Grandma's Boy is a stupid movie where a pothead teaches a chimpanzee karate, Jonah Hill's character sucks on a boob for 13 hours straight, and an old lady boasts about giving Charlie Chaplin a hand job. If that doesn't sell you, you should consult Mr. Cheezle about your energy. Now, sit back, get ready to game with a Great Pines American IPA from Aldi's, and prep for that robot legs operation! We Drink & We Watch Things

Our 2026 Summer Blockbusters tour takes a deeply unsettling, mind-bending turn this week on We Drink & We Watch Things. We are trading the bloody arena fights of Mortal Kombat II for the quiet, endless, fluorescent-lit nightmare of Kane Parsons' feature directorial debut, Backrooms. Distributed by A24, this psychological horror transforms a viral internet phenomenon into a genuinely terrifying study of grief, memory, and architecture gone completely wrong. To help suppress the existential dread of being trapped in a parallel universe, Lemar has given us our cocktail of the week - The Captain & Clark - a pale, yellow rum cocktail you'll want to sip on. It is crisp, a little bitter, and the perfect drink for when you feel like you are losing your grip on reality. This week, we unpack the incredible performances of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, the struggling furniture store owner who stumbles into a gateway in his basement, and Renate Reinsve as Mary, his therapist who gets pulled into the labyrinth with him. We dissect how the film captures the deeply creepy aesthetic of "liminal spaces" - those beige corridors, dead malls, and glitching, digital sandbox environments that feel completely empty yet intensely hostile. We also talk through the film's hidden layers, examining how these infinite yellow rooms function as a physical manifestation of Clark and Mary's unresolved trauma, and why Mark Duplass's character adds the perfect amount of unsettling gravitas to the lore.If you are a fan of the original YouTube shorts, or if you just love a horror film that trades cheap jump-scares for absolute psychological claustrophobia, this is an episode you cannot miss. We are blending our fascination with this new wave of internet-born cinema with our usual casual banter, proving that the only thing scarier than being entirely alone is the sinking feeling that you aren't.This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up. Summer blockbuster season is officially heating up here at We Drink & We Watch Things, and we are kicking off our high-octane July lineup with a return to the absolute pinnacle of cinematic bloodbaths: Simon McQuoid's newly released Mortal Kombat II. It turns out we needed a drink just to handle the pure, unadulterated CGI gore.To steel our nerves for the arena, Mackenzie has designed our cocktail this week - Kitana's Revenge - a gorgeous and delicious tequila concoction that looks exactly like it sounds. Trust us, after watching what this movie does to its characters, you'll need it.This week, we tackle the massive new additions to the roster, starting with Karl Urban's delightfully cocky, washed-up, convention-circuit iteration of Johnny Cage. We dissect the absolute madness of the narrative - from the 10th consecutive tournament stakes to the chaotic interdimensional politics of Outworld - and break down the arrival of fan-favorites like Kitana, Jade, and Martyn Ford's massive, menacing Shao Kahn. We also gloat over our favorite crowd-pleasing, gory fights, marveling at how a movie can be so unapologetically unhinged with its bisections and impalements while still trying to give us a genuine emotional arc about Cole Young and a redeemed Kung Lao. It's a loud, silly, and delightfully brutal adaptation that hits like a straight punch to the jaw.If you've spent the last month practicing your upper-cuts, or if you just want to hear us debate whether Karl Urban successfully channels the classic arcade energy of the 90s, this is the round you've been waiting for. We're blending our inner gaming nerds with our usual casual, cocktail-fueled banter, making this an explosive start to our 2026 Summer Blockbusters marathon. Adeline Rudolph just made quite the leap as far as video game adaptations go. While things didn't pan out well for Netflix's Resident Evil series, which was canceled after just one season in 2022, Mortal Kombat II is cruising at the box office. In 2021, director Simon McQuoid kicked off a new iteration of Mortal Kombat feature films with a movie focused on Cole Young (Lewis Tan) that also included a slew of other fan-favorite characters like Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), and many more. Rudolph didn't just join that ensemble via 2026's Mortal Kombat II. She headlines the film opposite Karl Urban's Johnny Cage. While Johnny Cage's evolution is the focal point of the Earth Realm storyline, Kitana's experience is the heart and soul of the Outworld material and, ultimately, it's Kitana who brings the two sides together. In celebration of Mortal Kombat II's wide release, Rudolph swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss her journey as an actor thus far, including making her screen debut via The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and lessons learned from Netflix's Resident Evil that she was able to apply to Mortal Kombat II. She also offered up some behind-the-scenes insight into all of Kitana's biggest moments in the movie, which included the film's final shot — all the main characters joining forces to bring back fallen champions. Now Playing - The Movie Review Podcast

Nic is not the only Cage who made garbage action flicks in the 1990s Karl Urban (The Boys) goes from Comic-Con has-been to fighting for Earth in a life-or-death tournament called Mortal Kombat II. Does this aging Gen X-er still have enough fight to defeat classic video game characters like fan-wielding Kitana, toothy Baraka, and big, bad Outworld villain Shao Khan? And can director Simon McQuoid bring new life to martial artists who didn't stick the landing in his COVID-era first attempt at the property? Get over here and listen to Arnie, Justin, and Stuart provide perspective on another Now Playing Podcast Arcade entry.

"The Basque region..." Mike went to see Mortal Kombat II, and while he and the rest of the group were at the movie, Amin did the unthinkable. Zaslow is headed to Rolling Loud with his son this weekend, and while that's important, the Cyclones' title game tonight has taken over the discourse. Plus, what should the Miami Heat do if they get the No. 1 pick? Should they take a player or trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo? Mortal Kombat II brings back more of the unforgettable characters you might have grown up eviscerating. Based on the ultra-violent video game franchise, it centers the story on warrior princess Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and washed-up action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban).  And of course, there's fighting. Lots and lots of fighting.
