Matt and Dawn travel back to August 1999 to look at the TV landscape. They review Jimmy Mcgovern's single drama Dockers which starred Ken Stott and Ricky Tomlinson unwittingly caught up in a strike. That's a little obscure but it gets more unknown from there. Channel 4 docusoap Love in Leeds and drama series Love in the 21st Century as well as ITV's bizarre choice to show Walking on the Moon, a brutal bullying drama on Bank Holiday Monday. Dawn's truly impressive cheesy pop knowledge is in full display as Matt tests her on two Summer charts and the pair reminisce about their first festival and clubbing.
If you're a fan of classic and vintage television, you'll probably think Robert Heading has enjoyed the best of jobs, because he's one of Britain's foremost TV documentary Archive Producers. Which means for the past 25 years he's been paid to put his feet up and watch thousands of hours of old telly shows. And for the most part he's specialised in comedy and light entertainment. A regular behind the scenes name on the credit roller of Channel 5's “When stuff Goes Horribly Wrong” series, along with retrospective specials celebrating Peter Kay, Tommy Cooper, Victoria Wood, Ricky Tomlinson and Bob Hope. Episode four already?! Guy and Rob are building up a head of steam and are joined for the first time by a guest. TV Writer Steve Dunne chips in with his thoughts on the 2001 football fan favourite Mike Bassett: England Manager. Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England's savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we'll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined. We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film's major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. But does this film work on any level if not being watched by someone who is already a football fan? In the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Chris has picked the 2001 mockumentary-style comedy, Mike Bassett: England Manager. Directed by Steve Barron and written by John R. Smith and Rob Sprackling, this stars Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Redman, Bradley Walsh, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Geoff Bell. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: The manager of England's national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett, a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Bassett insists that England will win the World Cup under his leadership, but that's before he replaces his star player with a once-gifted footballer who has since developed a drinking problem, and hired a one-time car salesman as his assistant. After stunning losses to Poland and Belgium, Bassett goes from a favorite of both fans and the press to one of the most hated men in England; hoping to whip his team into shape, he subjects them to the high-tech training methods of eccentric Dr. Shoegaarten, which injures more players than it helps. Despite Bassett's ineptitude, England manages to qualify for the World Cup tournament thanks to group opponents Turkey losing their final game, and he flies to Rio with his team in hopes of somehow turning their bad luck around. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

This week Libby Purves is joined by Dr Kevin Jones, Vic Armstrong, Vidal Sassoon and Peter Jefferson. Dr Kevin Jones is an NHS Consultant in Acute Medicine at the Royal Bolton Hospital and is also a comedian. He features in a short film, 'Dying for a Laugh', along with stand-up comedians including Shappi Khorsandi, Ricky Tomlinson, and Dave Spikey, all reflecting (and joking) about the taboo subject of death. The film supports National Dying Matters Awareness Week which aims to get people talking more openly about end of life care and dying. Vic Armstrong is a British-born stuntman and director. He has worked in the movie industry for forty years, as stunt double for Indiana Jones, James Bond and Superman, and has directed action scenes for three James Bond movies, 'Mission Impossible 3' and 'I Am Legend', to name but a few. His autobiography, 'The True Adventures of The World's Greatest Stuntman' is published by Titan Books. Vidal Sassoon is known as the man who 'changed the world with a pair of scissors', with the Bauhaus-inspired hair styles he pioneered in the 1960s and his 'wash and wear' philosophy. His life story is a true rags to riches one, told in a new film Vidal Sassoon The Movie which traces his path from his early days in an orphanage in the East End, to his time as a soldier in Israel, his beginnings on Bond Street and ultimately to international success and celebrity. Peter Jefferson is a former BBC announcer who read the shipping forecast on Radio 4 for over forty years. He's now written a book detailing the history of this British institution and looking at its broader cultural influence. 'And Now the Shipping Forecast' is published by UIT Cambridge.
