Everyone at the Cycling GK is saddened to learn of the passing of former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has died at the age of 76.  Noni Madueke ensured he was the in the news for the right reasons after his earlier mishap on social media about Wolverhampton… The youngster bagged a hat-trick as Chelsea hit Wolves for 6 in Enzo Maresca's first away match in charge of the Blues.  Ben, Tom and Watto also went through the rest of the action from an action-packed weekend in the top-flight, including a stunning save from David Raya in Arsenal's 2-0 win at Aston Villa and Erling Haaland's TENTH Man City hat-trick as they smashed Ipswich.  Joao Pedro grabbed a late winner for Brighton on Saturday as they beat Manchester United 2-1 at the AMEX. The former Watford man got the winner deep into added time after Danny Welbeck had earlier netted his 100th club goal of his career.  Arne Slot's first competitive game at Anfield as Liverpool boss saw him get off to winning ways againt Brentford, whilst Spurs were in fine form as they hit four past a sorry looking Everton.  Elsewhere, there were wins for Fulham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest and VAR was once again a sore topic as Bournemouth were denied a last-minute winner against Newcastle.  All that to come plus an epic Quiz, let's go! Well, well, well, welcome to The Portugal Corner, folks! Episode 143, where we dive deep into the world of Portuguese soccer, from the highs to the lows, and even the funny bits! We introduce Jacket Man! Alright, let's roll through it like a melody. Bernardo Silva, he strikes early against Real Madrid, huh? Drama unfolds as they end up in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Then we've got Arsenal and Bayern locking horns, ending up in a 2-2 tie. Now, Vitinha, he lends a helping foot to PSG against Barcelona, but alas, Barcelona pulls off a comeback win. Atletico takes down Dortmund, while Liverpool, they get a tough lesson from Atalanta. Oh, and the Greek-Turkish showdown, Olympiacos takes the crown against Fenerbahce. And hey, Chiquinho from Benfica days, he gets in on the action too. Switching gears, let's talk about Sporting, the Lions Den! Trincao with a double whammy, huh? They put Gil Vicente in their place with a 4-0 victory. Sporting's on fire, scoring left and right. Is this the golden era reminiscent of Vitor Pereira's Porto? Porto, on the other hand, not so smooth sailing. They falter against Famalicao, ending in a 2-2 stalemate. Tough luck there, needing some revamping, they say. And the birds pay tribute to Sven Goran Eriksson, before clinching a win against Marseille. Rafa and DiMaria shine bright. Plus, they breeze through Moreieriense with a 3-0 win. Over to Braga, Alvaro Djalo steals the show, helping defeat Estoril. But Guimaraes, they stumble with just a point against Farense. And Bournemouth holds them to a 2-2 draw. Liverpool, oh Liverpool, they slip against Palace, reminiscent of Gerrard's moment. Wolves and Nuno's boys, they lock horns, ending in a 2-2 draw. Arsenal and Aston Villa, they taste defeat against Birmingham boys, leaving Man City soaring high. Joao Felix, oh what a bicycle kick against Cadiz! But the big question looms: will he start against PSG? A clash of titans, perhaps? And over in Germany, Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, they clinch the Bundesliga title for the first time ever! Talk about historic moments. Well, folks, that's a wrap for today's show. Remember to tune in, subscribe, and spread the word like wildfire. Until next time, peace and love from The Portugal Corner! Due to the fact that I am having issues with my voice this week and am unable to record a new episode as you will or did already hear in the Intro and the fact that its an International Break week, I have decide to re-air an old episode in lieu of a new one. Recently I appeared on the Ray Mundo Futbol Podcast to discuss Sven Goran Eriksson's time at Benfica and you can listen to that episode by simply Clicking Here. That got me thinking it would be appropriate and right to present this encore presentation of Episode 56 that I recorded back in 2020 in the early days of the COVID pandemic. This is Part 1 of my review of the 1982/83 Benfica Season and Parts 2 and 3 will drop in the next 2 days to complete the 3 part miniseries. I hope to get a new episode recorded as soon as my voice improves! Taking a trip in the way back machine and reliving one of the greatest seasons in Benfica History. Plenty for Jim Boardman and Jay Reid to discuss on this week's episode of Scouser Tommies, as the temporary slowdown in fixtures comes to an end and we go back to two big games a week. The heavy schedule has taken its toll on the Reds squad, as discussed many times over the course of this campaign, and as soon as one or two come back another one or two break down. Seems we've a long wait before we get an empty treatment room. Is any of it our own doing - did Jurgen Klopp rush Trent Alexander Arnold back too soon for example? It's easier than you think to work out what should be a fairly obvious answer to that question, as Jay and Jim discuss. As for the injuries themselves, why is it some clubs seem to get tons of sympathy if even one important player is missing, where Liverpool are kind of just expected to get on with it, even when numerous key names are absent and the youngsters are filling in. Confirmation this week that Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to play a part as a member of the Reds management team for the next LFC Legends game. The news was welcomed by fans and Reds staff alike and it was no surprise the club went to the effort of making the lifelong Liverpool fan part of the occasion, at what is, to say the least, a very difficult time for him. As always, the lads across the park are available to lighten the mood. This week: - Trent's injury - was he pushed too soon? - As one comes back another goes out - story of the season - The positive impact of the academy on the first team's injury woes - The impact on the academy of those woes! - Doing things the right way financially - unlike some clubs - Awards time - Reds almost cleaning up - Is it pushing it to use the word ‘Legends' for some of those involved in the Legends game this time? - What does it say about where we were not too many years ago? - Is the so-called leading contender likely to be the new manager? - Who would be happy their own team lost? One guess. - The laughable reason why the team from the south can't be given digital tickets for the final - Best wishes to Sven - Get well soon Roy Learn more about your ad choices. Following Manchester City's late winner at Newcastle, David Mooney is joined by Adam Carter from StatCity.co.uk and the BBC's Football Correspondent, John Murray, to discuss the key moments from the game. The focus is on Oscar Bobb and Kevin De Bruyne after the impact that they both made from the bench. Following the sad news that former City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, we take some time out to remember his season at the club. Chris Higginbottom, Dom Farrell and Richard Burns give us their memories - plus we dig into the archives to hear some of our interview with Sven from 13 years ago. On top of that, there's also a look at what the Premier League's CEO Richard Masters said to the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee (spoiler alert: not much), and we remember our favourite games in the snow. ========= To get bonus podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/BlueMoonPodcast
