2002. The pop culture landscape would never be the same again. No, we're not talking about Robbie Williams £80m, six album deal (although Rudebox would indeed shift the landscape, if not exactly many copies). We're not even talking about Pop Idol top ten contestant Jessica Garlick coming (joint) third in Eurovision, although that was pretty good. We could be talking about the arrival of 6Music and BBC Four (TOTP RERUNS!!).But no, all of these memorable highlights take a positively backseat position against the stellar backdrop that was, quite literally, the 2002 Pop World! Boybands!Girl groups!Kylie!Coldplay!ABS!Don't be fooled listeners, 2002 consisted of twelve months that gave us pop memories like no other. Atomic Kitten rode the Tide! Britney loved Rock (‘n' Roll)! Daniel Bedingfield loved James Dean (possibly)! And amongst the idols and stars and academy's of TV talent shows increasingly speedy conveyor belts, the decade they continued to call the ‘noughties' moved up a gear thanks to Sugababes, Liberty X, Ms Dynamite and countless others. Where could it all end, we collectively asked (quite possibly via MSN messenger, or on a dial-up webchat forum)? And who better to navigate the BEST SELLING compilation of 2002, NOW 53, than senior producer for Listen the award winning premium podcast company David Manero! Taking time away from the Kitchen Disco with Sophie Ellis Bextor, Traitors Uncloaked, and the Pop Top Ten pod with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark, David shares his memories, hits and misses from the 43 Top Chart Hits across his two CDs (and a broken case). And, along the way, rediscover some genuine lost in the vault moments, find out what NOW whiplash is and how to avoid it, consider how the Spanglish Rappers Delight conquered the world, and marvel at how Teutonic techno troublers Scooter really were such a Big Thing. So, put down your Nokia 3310 or your Motorola Razr V3, switch off Big Brother 3, come out of the record department of Sainsbury's and tune into the best of 2002!I'm seein' stars, I can't believe my eyes… Hosted on Acast. Atomic Kitten star - and now solo artist Natasha Hamilton - talks about feuding with Kerry Katona, partying with U2 and all the 'dramas and traumas' that came with being in one of the UK's biggest pop bands in the 90s. She also talks about being a mother-of-five, her blended family - and how breakups from her previous partners led to the 'sickest, darkest feelings' she has ever experienced in her life.
Making her return to Léim Thart, Dublin pop artist Aimée has a new banger, the heartfelt 'Passenger Seat' takes us through a comforting journey dedicated to her late mother, as a trip down memory lane is set to slick pop production. Written with Gabrielle Aplin and Ash Howes (Kylie Minogue, Atomic Kitten), Aimée describes her latest offering as her ‘best therapy session yet' written for everyone who is missing someone, whether it's an ex-partner or somebody who has passed on; ‘Passenger Seat' is the song to sing, dance and drive home to. This new release follows the success of Aimée's Christmas single, ‘Grafton Street Lights', which won the Christmas FM Song Contest to be crowned Ireland's Christmas Song of the Year in 2023. Aimée also plays the Academy Green Room on the 4th August, tickets on sale now. Watch this episode on YouTube HERE Follow Ruairí Egan / Léim Thart HERE Watch Aimée on Léim Thart in 2022 HERE

PART 1 (of 6) of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters). Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time: https://x.com/rskxfm/status/1714711967305269595?s=20. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. Fans will recall Stephen Merchant announcing such great prizes as Ladder 49 (the mediocre John Travolta film), or Children of the Corn (Peter Horton's in it). Ricky Gervais once mused: "Imagine getting that and going 'Excellent, we can watch this now!'" PART 1 ends with a cliffhanger as Ricky says: "That's the end of that feature, until you can get ones that work. Okay, so you won't hear anymore of that, because it's rubbish." **TO BE CONTINUED** Underworld's Born Slippy (0:00) Atomic Kitten (15:18) NSYNC (23:23) Justin Timberlake (33:29) Destiny's Child (44:12) Whitney Houston (51:28) Madonna (59:02)

In today's episode of The Way They Were, Grainne and Chantal welcome some glamour to the show in the form of cabaret and burlesque star Dave the Bear! Now what kind of guest would such a character bring for us? Here's a clue, they definitely wore boot-cut jeans (according to Grannie though, so did Anthony and Cleopatra), they were the boy and girl band royalty, and they certainly made us whole again (for a little while anyway), it HAS to be Brain McFadden and Kerry Katona! Yes, thanks to Dave, we revel in the time Boyzone and Atomic Kitten collided, before it all went a bit Jeremy Kyle and Take-a-Break and before anyone even thought of venturing into the jungle. How did it all start and how long did our star-crossed lovers have to keep it all a secret from the public AND Louis Walsh for? This episode answers all the questions and serves as yet another warning to anyone thinking of tying the knot before the age of 40. Episode 220 is a chat with the journalist, pop culture writer, and author Michael Cragg.Michael's new book Reach for the Stars is a rip-roaring oral history of UK pop music between 1996 and 2006, told through the interviews with the popstars, the songwriters, producers, label executives, pop fans, svengalis and culture writers of the day. It's an unputdownable behind-the-scenes history of British pop music that tells the story of the Spice Girls, 5ive, Steps, S Club 7, Atomic Kitten, Girls Aloud, JLS, Liberty X, Sugababes, The X-Factor and more. The book contains many anecdotes like Geri Halliwell missing the Spice Girls audition because she had sunburn or 5ive saying 'Baby One More Time' is "fucking wank” to Max Martin's face.We spoke to Michael about pop stars' mad schedules, the lack of mental health awareness, Xenomania, the moguls like Pete Waterman; the homophobia around boy bands coming out, TOTP, Smash Hits and the media landscape of the day, and the crazy pressure they were under in which a number two record is considered was failure.Michael Cragg will also be appearing for an interview and Q&A with our pal Louise Bruton at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party on Saturday July 15th at Wigwam. Never meet your heroes. Een spreekwoord dat Frank vanaf heden niet meer kan bezigen. Het idee erachter is dat het altijd tegenvalt. De ontmoeting met Daan Hoole viel geenszins tegen. Een grote meneer, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Onderweg naar een mooie carrière mochten wij hem anderhalf uur bevragen. Zijn ambities, zijn ploeg en zijn hoogtepunt komen allemaal aan bod. En uiteraard ook Atomic Kitten...
Heidi Range is best known as a former member of the girl groups Atomic Kitten and then Sugababes. It feels like she was destined to become part of pop history from an early age. A good start was being born in the very musical city of Liverpool! She was part of a children's road show from the age of 12, with her and her friends performing songs such as Copacabana at all the social clubs in the area. She successfully auditioned to be part of Atomic Kitten aged 15, and later replaced Siobhan Donahy in Sugababes aged 18!We both reminisced about appearing on live weekend show CDUK, agreed how exciting that was, and how lucky we were to have that live telly buzz as part of our early careers.Heidi has two little girls, Aurelia and Athena, and has been happy to put her career on hold since becoming a mum, after years of living out of a suitcase as a pop singer. Heidi also talked very openly about having two miscarriages between her two daughters, the first being due to a 'blighted ovum', which she went through during the first lockdown. She is however massively grateful for having her two daughters and hopes they will have as close a bond as she has with her sister Hayley, who she describes as her best friend. She feels she's now just emerging from what she describes as her 'Mummy bubble', and is getting to a new stage where she's ready to remember who she was a little bit more.Heidi told me how she's just been a panel judge for Eurovision and revealed how secretive her involvement had to be, and how strict the judging conditions were on the night to make sure the judges' decisions were impartial. As she approaches her 40th birthday, she says she's ready for new projects. She's not 100% sure what they might be...though she did admit to more than a passing interest in Strictly. You heard it here first!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Michael Cragg, one of the best writers around on all things pop, releases his book, Reach for the Stars: Fame, Fallout and Pop's Final Party, on Thursday, March 30th.A celebration of British pop between 1996 and 2006, it takes in Steps, S Club 7, Blue, 5ive, Mis-Teeq, Hear'Say, Busted, Girls Aloud, McFly, Craig David and Atomic Kitten, among countless others, and gives that scene – that moment – the contextualisation it so sincerely deserves. Listen up! Andy McCluskey is the frontman of Merseyside electronic legends Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark or OMD as they're often known. OMD was formed in 1978 out of the ashes of another band The ID, to which I have a little family connection, which you'll hear about in the episode. Their 1980 song Ebola Gay earned them widespread popularity throughout Europe, and their 1981 album “Architecture and Morality” which would sell over 4 million copies and spawn hit singles like “Souvenir” and “Maid of New Orleans”. Their follow-up album “Dazzle Ships” has just turned 40 years old, and it's history is somewhat complicated. The album embraced sound collage and shortwave radio recordings. It's an album about technology and the Cold War. It sold just a fraction of it's predecessor, but it seems to have enjoyed a reappraisal over the years. It was possibly just ahead of it's time, and maybe it subverted expectations too. We get into it in the interview. After OMD fell apart Andy masterminded 90's pop sensations Atomic Kitten, becoming a principal songwriter alongside former OMD band mate Stuart Kershaw. Andy's profession relationship with band dissolved around their second album, but it strikes me as a somewhat surprising career path, and I was interested to hear Andy's thoughts on that too. OMD reformed in 2006 and are a continuing concern. Their last album, the well-received “The Punishment of Luxury” came out in 2017, and Andy updates me with progress on the follow-up in our interview. Enjoy! The teenage Michael Cragg was obsessed with the “glorious shiny ludicrous pop” of the period that began with the Spice Girls, included Hear'Say, Five, Steps, Atomic Kitten, Blue and countless others and ended with the closure of Popworld and Smash Hits ten years later, a tale less about music than the media that covered it and the machinations of the industry. All the key leading players – bands, managers, songwriters, critics – are interviewed in his sparkling and soon-to-be-published account of it all, Reach For the Stars, and our conversation with him includes … ….. why Chris Morris should make a film about it. … why there are no groups anymore. … Russell Brand auditioning for Five. … the secret of the Spice Girls' success. … which is more cynical, the worlds of TV or music. … why pop stars needed “bullet-proof exteriors”. ... the band that couldn't go to gigs or football matches without security to protect them. … why Blue would never have survived in the age of social media. … why pop stars were like contract players in 1930s movies. … how TV drained the fun and frivolity. … whether girl groups appeal to 100 per cent of the audience and boybands to only 50? … the extraordinary fall and rise of Whole Again by Atomic Kitten. … and the band mistakenly delivered by private jet to Donatella Versace. @MichaelCragg Reach For The Stars …https://www.waterstones.com/book/reach-for-the-stars/michael-cragg/9781788707244Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon and receive early access to every future Word Podcast!: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's boring at Christmas without a bit of 2000s throwback! Pour yourself a little mulled wine and get festive with Joel and David as they revisit the Christmas bonus disc on Girls Aloud's iconic "Chemistry" album. Eight tracks - a mix of covers and originals that sound like modern classics - this was the perfect continuation of the album's rocking vibes. If that wasn't enough, your RBAY boys also curl up on the couch for a good old-fashioned Christmas TV special. To coincide with the album's December release, Kimberley, Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah and Nicola also hosted ITV's "Christmas Mania" in 2005. The show also featured performances by Atomic Kitten's Liz McClarnon, Blue's Lee Ryan, Il Divo, Freefaller, the GMTV gang and a couple of choir lads with Aled Jones. A mixed bunch but hey, it's Christmas! Wishing all our wonderful listeners a very happy Christmas and New Year. We can't wait to bring you more fun 2000s pop nostalgia in 2023! Andy Varley is founder and CEO of Insanity Group. The international talent management firm employs more than 80 people across offices in London and LA - representing the likes of artistes Tom Grennan, Atomic Kitten, and presenters including Jordan North. In this in-depth interview, he recalls how winning Young Entrepreneur of the Year aged 17 gave him the confidence to grow and expand the company to represent broadcasters and content creators as well as DJs; shares how the pandemic prompted a pivot to creating subscription-based models for many of their content creators - allowing talent to work digitally rather than through in-person events; and discusses how the media industry is undergoing a revolution, and will never be the same for artists, agents or record companies.
In the first lockdown of 2020, Juno Dawson's editor was expecting a YA thriller—but all she wanted to write was Desperate Housewives, with witches. We talk about organizing multiple storylines, plotting a trilogy, and the question of “At what point do you turn the card”—when do you reveal information to the reader? Plus the delightful idea that a story is like a VHS tape for your brain, the fact that the voice of Lady Whistledown narrates her audiobook, and how you can find YOUR story—and tell it best. Juno Dawson is a bestselling novelist, screenwriter, journalist, and a columnist for Attitude Magazine. Juno's books include the global bestsellers, THIS BOOK IS GAY and CLEAN. She won the 2020 YA Book Prize for MEAT MARKET. Her first adult fantasy trilogy HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL COVEN arrives in 2022. She also writes for television and has multiple shows in development both in the UK and US. Her debut short film was THE BIRTH OF VENUS (BBC 2020) and she created the first official Doctor Who scripted podcast DOCTOR WHO: REDACTED (BBC Sounds 2022). An occasional actress and model, Juno had a cameo in the BBC's I MAY DESTROY YOU (2020), a recurring role in HOLBY CITY (BBC 2021) and was the face of Jecca Cosmetics Play Pots campaign. Juno grew up in West Yorkshire, writing imaginary episodes of Doctor Who. She later turned her talent to journalism, interviewing luminaries such as Steps and Atomic Kitten, before writing a weekly serial in a Brighton newspaper. Her writing has appeared in Glamour, The Pool, Dazed and the Guardian. She has appeared on Pointless Celebrities, BBC Women's Hour, Front Row, ITV News, Channel 5 News, This Morning and Newsnight. Juno lives in Brighton. She is a part of the queer cabaret collective known as CLUB SILENCIO. In 2014, Juno became a School Role Model for the charity STONEWALL.
