Most moms I know – at one time or another – have said some version of “I'm messing up my kids.” Because we've lived the power of words and actions in our own lives with our parents, and because we know the truth of science, and the practicality of much of the messaging, we know our impact is critical and we take our roles seriously. This is good and right and true. And can be crushing to our confidence.  We can heap shame on ourselves when we know the facts and read God's word and learn about a best practice, then line it all up against our failings. So today, we'll walk through: Why we feel this way How we define “messing up” The specific ways we feel like we're messing up our kids based on their ages What is true And finally, next steps for the grace-girl. Key Quotes “As image-bearers, our kids also hold the power of AND: impressionable AND resilient, strong AND in need, healing AND wounded.” - Writer + speaker Jill E. Jeannie and I chat about parenting from a place of grace and conviction vs. perfection and condemnation.  4:00Jeannie talks about the season of mothering that led her into writing Parenting the Wholehearted Childand Mom Set Free "I started on this journey in Scripture, what is His grace and what does it speak into the hard places of motherhood? And then, I just felt like He [God] was inviting me to share that, which I didn't understand, because I wasn't a writer...but as we all know where the Lord calls, He equips." "He wants to set us free from that pressure to get it all right..." 8:09 Jeannie shares what it was like when she parenting with a mindset of "I have to be a perfect example" or my kids will be messed up. "There was so little joy in the day to day, because I was so focused on me getting it right." "One of the most beautiful things about grace is God works through our weakness. His goal is ultimately for our children's eyes to be on Him, not on us." "...Really just learning how to understand my weakness in light of God's grace and know that it's not something to be ashamed of or feel guilty about, but it's always an invitation to return to the cross and say Jesus, 'Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to they cross I cling. Thank you that you never give up on me.' Because grace doesn't just free us.  It transforms us." "It's not a bad thing to want to get it right for them [our children]. But when we want to be on the throne, when we want to be worshipped by them, when we want to be looked at by them as flawless and invincibly, that's where we have to step back and be like, Who do I want on that throne? Do I want you looking to me as your perfect example or ultimately....looking at Jesus?" 15:32 Jeannie shares some of the changes she experienced in her parenting when she began parenting from a gospel and grace filled perspective. "If there is not internal heart change, all we are doing is raising rebels who will ultimately break free from the laws we put in place that they are confined to. They're performing to expectation, but there is no internal heart change going on.  God said, He who began a good work in you will complete it on the day that Jesus Christ returns and so sanctification is a life long process." She’s joining me today for us to talk about menu planning, cooking, and tips and tricks for busy families. We’ll talk about how to stop over-complicating dinner, why it’s okay to have super simple dinners (and we’ll give you some ideas for what might work for your family), and how to deal with trying to juggle multiple schedules and evening activities as your kids get older! By the way, if you’d like more help, I have put together a free Eat at Home Challenge. I share why I take it, how much I take, when I take it, and how it’s helped me sleep better and be healthier. [03:41] – I finally picked my top reads from 2018 (better late than never, eh?) I tell you about them on this episode! [06:52] – This episode’s amazing sponsor is You Need a Budget. We’ve personally used this software for years and love it! [09:30] – Having a plan for dinner (and having it already made) is one of the best ways I’ve found to reduce chaos in the evening and spend more time with my kids. [13:47] – If you struggle to get dinner on the table at night, you’ll be encouraged with Tiffany’s tips + you’ll be inspired to hear how eating together as a family has made such a difference in their home. [16:42] – I ask Tiffany about what to do when you have kids who have evening activities or older kids with differing schedules. She shares her go-to recipes for nights when the family needs to eat at shifts instead of all together at the same time. [18:53] – Tiffany offers advice on quick and easy meal ideas for people who feel tired and stressed out, or don’t have much time or energy. She also shares about her meal-planning system, and what gave her the inspiration to start making meal plans. [26:21] – I promised you a freebie at the beginning of this episode and here it is! I put together a week-long eat-at-home challenge based on Tiffany’s menu plans to give you a taste of what they’re like. Head to this link to sign up! We were introduced to this budgeting software by my brother-in-law, Justin, a few years ago. He and my husband, Jesse, are both what I would lovingly refer to as “nerds”. You know the kind of people… those people who think spreadsheets are fun. And who geek out over features in Excel. Yup, those kinds of people. You might as well poke my eyeballs out with a hot iron rod than get to me be giddy over creating spreadsheets. But nevertheless, I love Spreadsheet Nerds because they help keep people like me in line and on track!  Anyway, it was around Christmastime and Justin started telling Jesse about YouNeedaBudget — what we call YNAB for short. Jesse and I had both heard of this software before, but we had been using Quicken for so long that we’d not considered changing to anything else. Well, when Jesse saw the features of YNAB, he was intrigued enough to sign up for the free trial. And it was pretty much love at first sight. Truthfully, I can’t even begin to tell you how often I’ve heard him exclaiming to me, to friends, or just to himself something about, “How cool and helpful YNAB is!” I’m such a pen and paper and cash girl, but after all his raving reviews, I finally gave in and downloaded it on my phone and had him show me how it works. It’s really, really impressive. I love how we can see exactly how we’re doing in every budget in just one glance. And since we have multiple budgets for our businesses and personal, it allows us to track them all in one app. Which is so handy! Next week, I’ll tell you more why Jesse loves this budgeting software so much and how it has benefitted our family personally, but for now, if you’d like to check it out, YNAB is offering my listeners something special. They usually only offer a 30-day trial, but they are giving you all a FREE 60-day trial so you can really get a feel for it and see how well it works.  Go here to sign up for your FREE 60-Day YNAB trial. 015: Confidence by Design in Year One with Sarah Lynn Brennan Sara Brennan is a nationally published interior and floral designer, calling her style “Romantic Transitional”. She is an award-winning entrepreneur, author and lover of collecting all things vintage. Sara has been published in Romantic Homes and Traditional Home magazines highlighting her romantic and fall looks for the home and outdoor spaces. Only one year in business, Sara shares what she has done and is working on to be where she is today. Topics Mentioned: Doubt Confidence Therapy Marketing Thoughts from Sara: Staying at home with my children was what I was supposed to do, but I knew I had other ventures to explore. I began my wreath décor business as a creative expression and this soon became the foundation of my interior design business. A friend asked to photograph my home and this is when I saw the creativity and décor from a different perspective. This triggered the light bulb! In the beginning, my version of profitability was validation. I wanted to hear that I was good at this from people that weren’t my family or best friends. After achieving my goal of being published in magazines, I knew I had to do events to follow up with the publications. Publication was a great marketing tool to show to clients. It is important to value yourself. I started out connecting on Instagram with wreath makers and made my page similar to what an ETSY shop looks like. I found my style was different from the typical farmhouse pictures or the ‘ fixer upper’ genre like others. I love Instagram stories so much because I’m an introvert, so it allows me to talk indirectly to people and it is something I just feel comfortable doing. I'm with my friend, Jeannie Cunnion today talking about parenting, living a grace-filled life, and what it means to live set free   In this episode we discuss: 1. Parenting from a place of surrender 2.  God's grace 3. The most powerful tool in a parent's toolbox.   Favorite quotes: 1. The beauty of praying for them [our kids] is that you get to watch God act and move in ways that you couldn't orchestrate on your best days. 2. It's not like the Lord set me free in that and now I'm just free and I never wrestle with my freedom or the enemy never tries to put the chains back on me. It is a daily surrender, it is a daily reminder, it is a daily going back to the truth to be reminded of the freedom that is already mine, but I am so quick not to walk in. 3. The depths of God's grace. It really this bottomless well…You never ever get to the bottom of the well of God's grace. You're never too far gone. You've never blown it too much. 4. Surrender is not giving up, but it's giving over. 5. The beauty of praying for them [our kids] is that you get to watch God act and move in ways that you couldn't orchestrate on your best days.   Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business.   In this episode, I answer these questions- 1. How do you invite people into your stressors without dumping on them? (39:14) 2.  Why are women mentioned so little in the bible? (41:53) 3. I know I want to go to the next level in my business but I seem to continually take my foot off the gas. How can I move past this and build my business to reach where I want it to be? Recomendo! So much of parenting is really about the work God is doing in our own hearts. Jeannie Cunnion shares her story of being set free from the shame of her past and learning to let go of performance-based parenting. If you feel there IS something that separates you from the love of God, this is the episode for you. Jeannie shares encouraging truth and practical applications for giving ourselves and our kids grace. What we chat about: Why we need to be set free from shame of our pasts to live in the freedom of Christ. Jeannie’s story of a painful, short-lived marriage and the shame she carried from it. What performance-based parenting looks like. Shame-driven messages vs. grace-driven messages. We all have things that we believe will separate us from God, but he says nothing will separate us. Research about children who grow up in Christian homes. The importance of talking to our children about our failings and God’s grace. Creating a home of confession instead of a home of perfection. Although mom pressure is not a new concept, our generation of mothers seems to be suffering from it more than our mothers or grandmothers did.  We feel responsible for everything: do my kids go to the right schools? Are their friends good influences?  Is my food clean and organic enough to not cause cancer? Am I teaching my children enough about faith? Am I doing enough to build my child's self-concept? If they don't make this team will they ever be able to play again?  If we can think it up, we'll worry about it. Jeannie Cunnion, author of Mom Set Free, is on the show today talking about how we can learn to recognize our tendencies and then set ourselves free from anxious thinking, mom-guilt, and the burden of having to do life perfectly for our families.  If you've ever been kept awake at night worrying about your children for any reason, this podcast is for you!

Don't let the title of this episode fool you. Yes, Jeannie Cunnion's message is helping moms find relief from the pressure to get it all right (i.e. be perfect). But this conversation is for all parents. If you need to experience the grace and gentleness of Jesus today as a mom or dad, this episode is for you. Jeannie's words are salve to the exhausted parent. You don't need to listen long before you realize Jeannie really "wrestles with the wild grace of God." We had the privilege of meeting Jeannie through this episode. Since then, her words have penetrated our home and how we show Jesus to our kids. Jeannie is a wife and mom of four fun boys. Her unique message of God's grace is so refreshing. In Jeannie's words, "I spent the first many years of parenting believing that I had to be a perfect example for my kids to follow and worrying that their entire futures were riding on my ability to perfectly orchestrate their lives. My goal was to make very few mistakes and have very little regret. You can probably guess how that turned out. The shame I felt from the mistakes I made was real. And because I wasn't accepting God's grace for me in all of my weaknesses and brokenness, I struggled to give grace to my kids in their weaknesses and brokenness." But Jesus. Yes, but Jesus. This conversation helps all of us wrestle with and apply the grace of Jesus in our homes. Show Notes:  Jeannie Cunnion's blog and website, click here. These days, however, you’re most likely to find Jeannie alongside her husband, Mike, with baby Finn in her arms while cheering on their three older boys at any one of their sporting events. Jeannie's passion is encouraging women to live in the freedom for which Christ has set us free - a message her own heart needs to be reminded of daily. As for what makes her happy – well, that would be the love of Jesus, good music, a great book, worship, sand between her toes, Auburn football, putting her heart on paper, water in every form, singing like nobody’s listening, and the greatest gift God has given her, Mike and their four beautiful boys. Here are just a few of the things Annie Leigh and Jeannie discussed: Jeannie's latest book, Mom Set Free...which just released last week! Life with all boys. Becoming a dog owner.
