This week on Counsel Brew, we're serving up a tall glass of investigative prowess with a side of storytelling brilliance, courtesy of Mark Curriden. A lawyer turned legal journalist (and allegedly not a fan of writing—ironic, right?), Mark has spent three decades chasing stories, uncovering scandals, and narrating them with a captivating energy that makes you forget you ever Googled “what is federalism.”Mark's career reads like a Hollywood legal drama. From his time as a national legal affairs writer for The Dallas Morning News, where he unearthed a tobacco scandal that landed Texas Attorney General Dan Morales in hot water, to his gripping book Contempt of Court: A Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism (ABA Silver Gavel Award winner, by the way), Mark's work is nothing short of legendary. As the founder and senior editor of The Texas Lawbook and a correspondent for the Houston Chronicle and Dallas Business Journal, Mark knows how to find the facts, tell the story, and leave you thinking about it long after. And when he tells a story, it's not just journalism—it's a captivating performance. Picture this: a room full of people, Mark narrating by memory, his words powerful enough to make even the most distracted texter put down their phone. But let's talk brews. Mark's choices? A unique pairing of Moose Drool beer (yes, that's a real thing) and The Sea Hag coffee, which he orders from the southern tip of New Jersey. Clearly, Mark is as multi-faceted as his stories. In this episode, we chat about his investigative reporting on death penalty cases, price-fixing scandals, and even the future of the American jury system. Plus, Mark explains why he prefers digging up facts over giving opinions and why his love of uncovering the truth keeps him coming back for more. So, grab your Moose Drool or coffee, and settle in for an episode filled with intrigue, inspiration, and a hefty dose of storytelling magic.Author of Contempt of Court: The Turn Of-The-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism. In a Violent Nature is an art house version of Friday the 13th. It's minimalist, lacking a score, and generally follows the killer Johnny around as he tromps through the woods. It's an interesting twist on the classic slasher formula, but its style certainly won't be for everyone. That said, In a Violent Nature deserves credit for daring to be distinct in a genre full of tropes and clones. That alone probably warranted a better at the box office. It grossed just $4.56 million on a budget of $3 million. Good enough to earn it a sequel, but nothing to write home about. Now, sit back, enjoy the serene sounds of nature with a Moose Drool from Big Sky Brewing, and don't touch Johnny's locket! What is your favorite trail food? Marya: So many things… Chocolate and peanut butter Cliff Nut Butter Bars, Keto granola/trail mix, Baby bel cheese… I just like to eat! Jack: They call it "trail mix" for a reason; that's because it's the perfect trail food. 2. What is your favorite trail in Billings? Marya: Norm Schoenthal Island with my dog Max Jack: Zimmerman Park. If you want, you can walk along the rims all the way through Indian Cliffs to the Back Nine trail, which goes all the way to the cliffs above the "Castle house" in Ironwood. There isn't a bad view the whole way. 3. What is your favorite ale? Marya: Street Fight Irish Red Ale from Angry Hanks, but I do also enjoy Cold Smoke from KettleHouse Brewing Co. Jack: My favorite beer in the world is Smithwick's, which everyone should try if they visit Ireland. I'll give an honorable mention to Moose Drool, but my favorite Billings beer is also Street Fight. It's just too good to argue with.

As the episode got started, Joel and I poured ourselves a pint of Moose Drool, by the Big Sky Brewing Company, but we drank almost all of it before recording! For our FRED Talks segment, Joel talked about surfing ettiquette, while Jose talked about the fact that Pope Francis is the 266th pope, the first being St. Peter. In the main segment of the show, Joel and Jose took some listener questions: (1) what has Joel been up to? (2) Which is better: Star Wars or Star Trek? (3) How does Jose feel about being a dad, and does Joel have any parenting advice? (4) Should we forgive Hulk Hogan and James Gunn? (5) What's our take on conspiracy theories, such as the Sandy Hook false flag conspiracy? In the final segment, Jose talked about Bishop Barron's DVD series on the mass, and Joel talked about Dave Matthew's latest album. But Joel also talked a little bit about President Barack Obama's speech recently in South Africa. This was a fun episode for us, and we look forward to getting more questions from you! Please join us on Facebook and leave us your questions! Next week, we will be having an awesome interview, so you will want to hear that conversation. See you next week! Cheers!
