Dublin artist Ian Nyquist is a composer who released the album Gilded in September 2025. It's focused on the bodhrán, pushing the instrument 'beyond its ordinary confines' channelled through modelling software. During this conversation, Ian talks about his upbringing, how he came to the bodhrán (only about three years ago), why limitations on music-making can be revelatory, the Irish artists interesting in taking 'traditional' Irish music to new places, the urban environment, the Complex whose future is in doubt as a music venue, and we discuss the creation of Gilded. Buy Gilded: https://iannyquist.bandcamp.com/album/gilded The beating heart around which 'Gilded' is woven is the bodhrán, a native Irish frame drum with which Nyquist uses innovative techniques to push the instrument beyond its ordinary confines. Mirroring the instrument's sound through modelling software, the album's title itself nods to a theme of transformation, suggesting something familiar burnished to a new brilliance, giving it new life. The result being a truly unique unfurling of the harmonic, hypnotic and rhythmic potential of the bodhrán. This spirit of transformation is most vividly realised through Nyquist's collaborations with some of Ireland's most evocative voices. On a version of 'Leis a'bháta Dhubh Dharaich (The Black Oaken Boat)', Edinburgh-born, Dublin-based singer-songwriter lona Zajac lends her haunting vocals to an old Gaelic rowing song, her voice holds the track in a timeless tradition even as Nyquist's arrangement swirls around her; an anchor in a storm- tossed sea. Similarly, on 'Úna Bhán (Fair Una)', Cork's sean-nós singer Lorcán Mac Mathúna brings a sacred and ethereal quality to the 18th-century love song, his voice floating assuredly over Nyquist's sparse, shimmering arrangement. An original composition by Laucan, 'What Else Am I For?', marries introspective, dream-washed vocals with an impressively fine-tuned production style. Once again, Nyquist demonstrates his ability to connect diverse genres and musical traditions. Ireland's music scene continues to branch out and evolve, spurred on by the artists-like Nyquist; with 'Gilded', he melds the sound worlds of old and new, of technique and heart, of heritage and reinvention. His work resists neat distinctions and rigid genre typologies, while retaining a sense of where he calls home.

Jacob explains how the post-2008 economic environment allowed the tech industry to amass an enormous amount of wealth and political power, using access to cheap credit and government contracts to embed themselves into democratic institutions. Journalist Jacob Silverman joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about his new book, Gilded Rage: Elon Musk and the Radicalization of Silicon Valley. He discusses the rightward shift in ideology among leading tech giants and their companies, partially attributing the change to an interest in doing business with governments, including the U.S. and Israel. He speaks about the influence of Saudi Arabian wealth on the U.S. tech industry and how Saudi Arabia uses access to cutting-edge technology to remain in power and conduct mass surveillance on its people. Silverman addresses the calculated way today's tech leaders have taken control of the idea economy as they increasingly interfere with what information the public sees, such as Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter (now X). He gives examples of imagined and attempted tech-utopias, discussing communities such as California Forever and Próspera and their impacts. Silverman also discusses the alliance between the tech right and discontented moderate Democrats in San Francisco, explaining their involvement in recall politics and the transactional nature of tech politics. Michael #1: Cyclopts: A CLI library A CLI library that fixes 13 annoying issues in Typer Much of Cyclopts was inspired by the excellent Typer library. Despite its popularity, Typer has some traits that I (and others) find less than ideal. Part of this stems from Typer's age, with its first release in late 2019, soon after Python 3.8's release. Because of this, most of its API was initially designed around assigning proxy default values to function parameters. This made the decorated command functions difficult to use outside of Typer. With the introduction of Annotated in python3.9, type-hints were able to be directly annotated, allowing for the removal of these proxy defaults. This release was particularly interesting to me because of the improvements on the "free-threaded" variant of the interpreter. Specifically, the two major changes when compared to the free-threaded variant of Python 3.13 are: Free-threaded support now reached phase II, meaning it's no longer considered experimental The implementation is now completed, meaning that the workarounds introduced in Python 3.13 to make code sound without the GIL are now gone, and the free-threaded implementation now uses the adaptive interpreter as the GIL enabled variant. These facts, plus additional optimizations make the performance penalty now way better, moving from a 35% penalty to a 5-10% difference.” Lots of benchmark data, both ASGI and WSGI Lots of great thoughts in the “Final Thoughts” section, including “On asynchronous protocols like ASGI, despite the fact the concurrency model doesn't change that much – we shift from one event loop per process, to one event loop per thread – just the fact we no longer need to scale memory allocations just to use more CPU is a massive improvement. ” “… for everybody out there coding a web application in Python: simplifying the concurrency paradigms and the deployment process of such applications is a good thing.” “… to me the future of Python web services looks GIL-free.” Michael #3: Free-threaded GC The free-threaded build of Python uses a different garbage collector implementation than the default GIL-enabled build. The Default GC: In the standard CPython build, every object that supports garbage collection (like lists or dictionaries) is part of a per-interpreter, doubly-linked list. The list pointers are contained in a PyGC_Head structure. The Free-Threaded GC: Takes a different approach. It scraps the PyGC_Head structure and the linked list entirely. Instead, it allocates these objects from a special memory heap managed by the "mimalloc" library. This allows the GC to find and iterate over all collectible objects using mimalloc's data structures, without needing to link them together manually. The free-threaded GC does NOT support "generations” By marking all objects reachable from these known roots, we can identify a large set of objects that are definitely alive and exclude them from the more expensive cycle-finding part of the GC process. Overall speedup of the free-threaded GC collection is between 2 and 12 times faster than the 3.13 version. Brian #4: Polite lazy imports for Python package maintainers Will McGugan commented on a LI post by Bob Belderbos regarding lazy importing “I'm excited about this PEP. I wrote a lazy loading mechanism for Textual's widgets. Without it, the entire widget library would be imported even if you needed just one widget. Having this as a core language feature would make me very happy.” https://github.com/Textualize/textual/blob/main/src/textual/widgets/__init__.py Well, I was excited about Will's example for how to, essentially, allow users of your package to import only the part they need, when they need it. So I wrote up my thoughts and an explainer for how this works.
