Table Talk

Just how important is the history of beer when it comes to looking at the history of human civilisation? It might seem like a flippant question, but there's evidence that beer-making has played a crucial role in our species' past. The art of beer making is thought to go back as much as 12,000 years, with different cultures and societies all around the world brewing their own varieties. In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, we delve into the history of one of the world's most popular drinks and look to what the future of beer might look like. Listen to the full episode to learn about different methods for making beer in far-flung parts of the world, find out the proper way to taste beer (and why an early start can be useful!), and why prohibition never took off in the UK. We also look at the history of the British pub, why they've played such a central role in our culture, and what their future prospects look like. Pete Brown, Author, Broadcaster, Consultant, Beer Lover Pete Brown is a British author, journalist, broadcaster and consultant specialising in food and drink, especially the fun parts like beer, pubs, cider, bacon rolls and fish and chips.  Across twelve books, his broad, fresh approach takes in social history, cultural commentary, travel writing, personal discovery and natural history, and his words are always delivered with the warmth and wit you'd expect from a great night down the pub.  He was named British Beer Writer of the Year in 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2021, has won three Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards, been shortlisted twice for the Andre Simon Awards, and in 2020 was named an “Industry Legend” at the Imbibe Hospitality Awards.  After looking for a book that explained the British love for beer but not being able to find it, Pete wrote Man Walks Into A Pub: A Sociable History of Beer (2003, revised 2010).  Its follow up, Three Sheets to the Wind (2006) and then Hops & Glory (2009, ) Shakespeare's Local (2012), The Pub: A Cultural Institution (2016) and Miracle Brew (2017) have all been critically well received.

Today's episode invites Charlie Deist into the discussion: "I'm a writer, sailor, natural mover and radio producer. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, studied economics at UC Berkeley, and finally found my sea-legs after a stint as staff writer for The Seasteading Institute. In 2018 I became a master-level MovNat certified trainer (Level 3 + aquatics + combatives), and in 2020 I became a Coast Guard licensed captain. I operate a part-time sailing charter business on an Islander 36 in Berkeley, but mainly make my living producing radio, podcasts, and books based on podcast interviews. My writing focuses on the intersection of health and politics, with occasional forays into anthropology and agriculture. I've written/edited several books including Hormetics: Physical Fitness for Free People, Three Sheets to the Wind: The Art of Flying Spinnaker, and most recently, The New Strongman Code: Building Resilient Fitness Community in the Post-COVID Era. My work has been published in BBC.com, Acres USA, Townhall.com, and Erraticus. I host a tribe of natural movers every Saturday morning in a public park for free movement, in nature. We borrow from many different modalities, including MovNat (aka the Natural Method), parkour, yoga, etc., although we swear by none of them. We spend the most time doing groundwork and inventing games, while incorporating the elements as much a possible through barefoot running, open-air "bathing” (a la Hebertisme), and cold water swimming (when high tide allows it)." If you have any interest in exploring the truth outside of the box of popular beliefs about the body and training, then this is the podcast for you. We're on a mission for TRUTH in biomechanics and training the human system, and every episode will dive deep into that. All episodes are recorded live on No Filter Network, an interactive platform that allows viewers to ask questions, and even 'knock' to join the stream live in real time. If you want to ask us questions, debate our ideas, or otherwise, then come join us live as we stream these episodes. To view upcoming livestreams: https://nofilter.net/profile/VxseYlRuzuddOjUQvI83EbCO2C43 From Dr. Will: "Currently I work as a chiropractor in Banff Alberta, however my passion is human movement/biomechanics. I put theory into TEST to find out what works and what doesn't. The Bruce Lee quote “take whats useful and disregard the rest” is how I find movement truth. The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality. Now Running/Gait mechanics and martial arts (especially boxing) is how I test truth in movement; theory is always put to the test! From my teenage years into my late 20s, I spent significant time within mainstream fitness practices such as Crossfit, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and bodybuilding, not in that particular order. I have also spent time playing soccer, boxing, skiing amongst other sports. Having stacked many injuries in my teens/20s from improper training, I was led on a journey into chiropractic and sports injuries. I have worked with 1000s of injured patients in 8 years of chiropractic practice and have seen many injuries in the gym as a former Crossfit coach for 5 years. I've now spent 1000's of hours learning and practicing systems such as Functional Range Conditioning, Weckmethod and Goata. Goata has my interest at the moment, as I see it as a platform for a new Paradigm in movement. I believe we (Experts) are using incorrect maps of movement, therefore injuries are prevalent in sport and life. I will always test and retest in my own theories in real movement. Join me on my journey to change the movement game for the public and experts." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-art-of-move/message

As humans, we yearn for tradition. We crave the companionship and comfort in the knowledge our actions were reflected in those before us and will be in those after us. Some traditions that get passed on are obvious, like roasting a turkey on Thanksgiving or leaving out cookies and milk for Santa. Language through the years has morphed, and thanks to immigration, our colloquialisms, and an increase in rapid communication, our vocabulary has both expanded and contracted. Language is a living organism of its own. You might remember from episode one, where I told you the origin story of minding your p's and q's - it came from sailing. So it probably won't come as a surprise to you, but HEAPS of the common phrases we say today come from a nautical background. We were grateful to the IBA that they engaged with us as their official media partner and we had a studio to record some great chats that you will get to enjoy over coming weeks. Anyone who thinks and reads about beer should know Pete Brown. He's been named British Beer Writer of the Year multiple times, as well as publishing books on beer, beer culture and beer history including Man Walks into a Pub, Three Sheets to the Wine and Hops and Glory. Pete gave the keynote presentation at BrewCon and gave his audience plenty to think about. If you're an IBA member, you will have access to his presentation in coming weeks and it is a good reason to join if you're not. We pick up on a couple of the themes he raised in his keynote, as well as discuss the constant change and evolution that is taking place in the beer market while noting that in some ways that the more things change, the more of a recurring pattern we see. Old folk wisdom says there are two things you don t want to see being made sausages and legislation. You might want to add kambucha to that list. According to one of the guys who makes it, Daniel Morris from Big Easy Bucha, it s made in what s called "open brewing" which is kind of like brewing beer except instead of being in a closed system it s an open vat with a SHEET over it. Yes, a sheet. A black sheet. In all fairness Big Easy Bucha, sheet or not sheet it tastes awesome. As we can attest after a rigorous taste test on this Happy Hour, sacrificing ourselves for science by adding whisky to Bucha, making what Andrew Duhon christens as Boozy Bucha. Harry Rosenberg no relation and Molly Portier make up 50 of Blonde Roses, one of the most exciting new bands in New Orleans. In fact they re so new that they ve only been around a few weeks having been reborn from an earlier outfit you ll know if you;re from Lafayette, called Wooden Wings. As you know if you listen to Happy Hour, we get to hear a lot of great music on this show these guys rate up there with the absolute best. Do you know anything about bras If you do you can decorate one and enter it into the Bodaceous Bra competition at Festi Gals, an annual festival celebrating women that Diane Lyons dreamed up to complement festivals about tomatoes and oysters. Diane s day job is an event planner with her own company Accent DMC which she describes as being like Run DMC but with less money. However, still plenty of champagne. Andrew Duhon just finished writing a song called Whatever Happened to Gray. Although by now it may be called something else, a rose and the color gray by any other name would be, well, a plant and a color with different names. If you want to know why the song induces trance like good feelings, Andrew has a musical, psychological and mathematical explanation. Phots at Wayfare by Nathaniel Trahan.
