About our guest:Mark Steffe is the President/CEO of First Command Financial Services, Inc. which provides personal financial coaching to about 290,000 client families around the world. Mark is responsible for guiding the organization in its efforts to make lifelong financial security possible for all military families. First Command accomplishes this by creating lasting bonds with clients through face-to-face coaching and empowering them to develop positive financial behaviors for every stage of their lives. First Command is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has more than 165 offices nationwide. First Command, through its subsidiaries, maintains more than $35 billion in managed accounts and mutual funds and has more than $62 billion in life insurance coverage in force, while First Command Bank holds more than $960 million in deposits.Mark joined First Command as a Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff of Advisor Operations in 2010 and has since played an integral role in evolving the client experience in a digital world. At the same time, he has protected the integrity of the face-to-face coaching that is central to the First Command philosophy. Throughout his subsequent roles as Senior Vice President and Director of Advisor Operations for the Midwest Division and Executive Vice President and National Director of Advisor Operations, Mark helped build strong, collaborative relationships between Advisors and the Home Office. This has been crucial in enabling Advisors to help clients pursue their financial goals more effectively and efficiently. His accomplishments and demonstrated leadership ability led to his promotion to President in 2017 and expanded COO responsibility in 2018.In January 2020, Mark was appointed as the first CEO in First Command's history without military service experience. His selection was the result of an ethos of service to the military gained during more than a decade immersed in First Command's culture, a deep understanding of the challenges faced by our Nation's military families, and in recognition of the demonstrated leadership skills required to guide the organization in its efforts to make lifelong financial security possible for all military families. On day 70 in his new role, Mark was confronted with a once-in-a-generation crisis as a global pandemic was declared. Under his leadership, First Command rapidly adjusted its operations to continue to help military families pursue financial security amidst a volatile economic landscape in which in-person face-to-face coaching was no longer possible. At the same time, at Mark's direction, First Command immediately made financial relief programs available to clients to bolster their financial outlook during the crisis. To ensure that First Command continually adapts to the needs of military families, Mark and his team regularly meet with clients to seek out their perspectives. During his tenure at First Command, Mark has visited more than 50 military installations in 23 U.S. states and three countries. This personal outreach is supplemented by the First Command Financial Behaviors Index®, a monthly survey that assesses the financial behaviors, intentions and attitudes of career military families. Mark also consults regularly with First Command's Military Advisory Board, a select group of retired senior flag officers and senior enlisted leaders from the Nation's military services. The 10-member board provides Mark and First Command with an independent perspective on issues relevant to First Command's work, as well as advice on how to best serve the interests of military clients. In his role as President/CEO, Mark has spearheaded inclusion initiatives for First Command. Under his leadership, First Command is striving to create a more inclusive culture in which all employees and Advisors feel trusted, valued and empowered. For Mark, advancing equality is not just the right thing to do from a business perspective, but a personal imperative born from a desire for everyone to have the same opportunities he has had in his career. In service of this goal, Mark committed to the CEO ACT!ON pledge for diversity and inclusion in 2020. He also championed the hire of the company's first Diversity & Inclusion Director. In recognition of Mark's leadership during the pandemic and on issues of diversity and inclusion, he was nominated as one of the Dallas Business Journal's Most Inspiring Business Leaders of 2020. Mark was also recognized in 2020 as a member of the Fort Worth 400, an annual list by Fort Worth Inc. magazine of influential community leaders.Mark actively supports several charitable endeavors, including the annual Spirit of Giving campaign by United Way of Tarrant County and the First Command Educational Foundation (FCEF). United Way of Tarrant County is a local charity focused on providing leadership and harnessing resources to solve persistent social challenges, while FCEF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering those who serve our Nation by improving their financial literacy. FCEF accomplishes this goal by offering approximately $130,000 in annual scholarships and financial education to America's military servicemembers, civilian federal employees and their families. In addition to his philanthropic pursuits, Mark is active in LeaderPrime, which fosters connections among Fort Worth business leaders new to the city or to their roles.Mark graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. He holds Series 7, 8, 23, 63 and 65 securities registrations. This week on Counsel Brew, we're serving up a tall glass of investigative prowess with a side of storytelling brilliance, courtesy of Mark Curriden. A lawyer turned legal journalist (and allegedly not a fan of writing—ironic, right?), Mark has spent three decades chasing stories, uncovering scandals, and narrating them with a captivating energy that makes you forget you ever Googled “what is federalism.”Mark's career reads like a Hollywood legal drama. From his time as a national legal affairs writer for The Dallas Morning News, where he unearthed a tobacco scandal that landed Texas Attorney General Dan Morales in hot water, to his gripping book Contempt of Court: A Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism (ABA Silver Gavel Award winner, by the way), Mark's work is nothing short of legendary. As the founder and senior editor of The Texas Lawbook and a correspondent for the Houston Chronicle and Dallas Business Journal, Mark knows how to find the facts, tell the story, and leave you thinking about it long after. And when he tells a story, it's not just journalism—it's a captivating performance. Picture this: a room full of people, Mark narrating by memory, his words powerful enough to make even the most distracted texter put down their phone. But let's talk brews. Mark's choices? A unique pairing of Moose Drool beer (yes, that's a real thing) and The Sea Hag coffee, which he orders from the southern tip of New Jersey. Clearly, Mark is as multi-faceted as his stories. In this episode, we chat about his investigative reporting on death penalty cases, price-fixing scandals, and even the future of the American jury system. Plus, Mark explains why he prefers digging up facts over giving opinions and why his love of uncovering the truth keeps him coming back for more. So, grab your Moose Drool or coffee, and settle in for an episode filled with intrigue, inspiration, and a hefty dose of storytelling magic.Author of Contempt of Court: The Turn Of-The-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism. In February 2012, Denton Ward and Lauren Crisp, along with Samantha Bean and another friend, went to McDonald's, where Denton Ward was violently assaulted by Marcus Jones and a mob of other attackers. Lauren Crisp and Samantha Bean carried a bleeding Denton Ward to his SUV in an attempt to get him to the hospital. The driver, Samantha Bean, ran a red light and collided with another car. Denton Ward was killed and Lauren Crisp, who was unrestrained and tending to Denton Ward's injuries, was also killed. Despite the defense's attempts to shift focus away from McDonald's ongoing lack of concern for customer safety at a restaurant location with a history of late-night violence and to blame Samantha Bean for reckless driving, a Brazos County, Texas jury assigned 97 percent of the responsibility to McDonald's and returned a verdict of $27,000,000 in damages.   Guest Bio: Chris Hamilton Chris Hamilton has established himself as one of the leading high-stakes trial lawyers in the United States. In this interview, we talk with Lisa Ong about her article, Changing the Lens ~ How coaching with an inclusive equity lens accelerates cultures of belonging. As organizations increasingly see the importance of embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging into their policies and culture, more leaders are focusing on how to incorporate those ideas. Coaching is a great skillset for promoting cultures of inclusion and belonging because when you look at the traits for inclusive leaders, giving and getting feedback are two of them.  Being curious and listening. Being open-minded, all of those things and skills that coaches are trained for fit right into DEI&B.  Companies recognized for their DEI work make an effort to embed DEIB into everything they do. It becomes part of the DNA of their culture, and they measure it in their core values and performance expectations.  They don't look at DEIB as an extension of what they do; it becomes part of their brand internally and externally in the community. As President and Founder of Wishing Out Loud LLC, Lisa is widely known as a "talent gardener" and "inclusion connector” because she coaches and mentors leaders to support the growth and momentum of their DEIB vision. Best results come from the best talents, and the best talents can be found in the best places to work. How do you make your recruitment company a top place to work? My guest, David Cathey, reveals their standards and practices that made his firm, Unity Search Group, amongst the Dallas Business Journal's Best Places to Work for three years running. David is a Partner at Unity Search. He oversees Unity's finance, accounting and tax consulting/contract, Unity's IT division and Unity's practice development, including training and development of our core team members, along with client development, relationship management and candidate recruiting. Episode Outline and Highlights [01:24] How David and I got acquainted via podcast. [03:45] Discussion on training and why it is important to approach different learning modalities. [08:50] David reveals Unity Search's ‘train-the-trainer' approach and how it builds a supportive environment for newly hired recruiters. [14:30] The advantages of growing your own talent versus hiring someone with years of experience. [19:30] Hear best practices when hiring rookie recruiters. [24:22] Know more about Unity KPIs, standards, and how they build a culture of accountability. [29:33] Great ideas on gamifying your KPIs to drive a self-managing culture. [35:06] Distinction between micromanagement and helping your team to be successful. [41:30] Are client visits still ‘fashionable' for recruiters? [50:05] The problem with Vendor Management Systems (VMS) - and how to avoid them. [53:55] David shares his battle with the ‘impostor syndrome.' [1:02:00] What is next with Unity Search? Continuous Learning and Establishing a Culture of Accountability In our conversation, you will hear David shared Unity Search's approach on team development focusing in the following areas: The importance of continuous learning and approaching different learning modalities Best practices in hiring inexperienced recruiters  Train-the-trainer approach  How to get consistent results by establishing a self-managing culture and accountability Why It's Time to Start Doing Client Visits Again Because of the pandemic, most recruiters stopped or drastically reduced the number of in-person client meetings. The advent of technology also made it possible for recruiters to engage via Zoom or MS Teams which brings us to the question: “Are client visits still relevant when it comes to recruitment?” Dave shared how client visits are one of his team's KPIs and how meeting clients face-to-face is more relevant than ever, now that pandemic related restrictions are getting more lenient. He shared his philosophy behind it, “You are not going to date someone long term and develop a long-term relationship if you haven't seen them face-to-face.” David explained that the pandemic really took that in-person element away because everybody was working remotely.  He then elaborated, “What ended up happening at least for our business … is your client visits turned to just phone call check-ins.” Now that restrictions have been lifted, David is making sure his team is taking the opportunity to get back out there and get in front of them. If you are running a local desk, this is something that you may want to look at to further engage with your clients and establish more connections. As Dave shared, “Sometimes meeting them for a cup of coffee, they love that because they are going out of their house.” Are You Struggling with Impostor Syndrome? If you are experiencing persistent self-doubt on your skills, talents and accomplishments, you may be suffering from impostor syndrome. This is like an elephant in the room that talented recruiters and recruitment business owners may be hesitant to discuss but it is something that everybody feels every once in a while. David courageously shared his battle with the impostor syndrome and how he overcame it.  “I've really worked on changing my attitude towards impostor syndrome” David stated. You may be able to relate on how it can hold you back in your career or how it can make it difficult to engage with a client. David realized that it is actually rooted in fear and not getting out of his comfort zone. He then shared how he turned it into a benefit for him and the steps he took to get out of that comfort zone. I hope that you too can appreciate the nuggets of wisdom in this part of the interview. On this episode, Ami Kassar interviews Gail Davis, founder and president of GDA Speakers, about managing a speaking bureau during the pandemic and what she learned. Gail Davis' decades of experience in corporate marketing and event management served as the launchpad for GDA Speakers. Before establishing the company in 1999, she spent 20 years managing the events of the Dallas-based global technology conglomerate─Electronic Data Systems (EDS)─founded by Ross Perot. While at EDS she discovered Nando Parrado, a heroic survivor of the 1972 Andes plane crash. Parrado presented an unforgettable speech at EDS' marquee event. Shortly after his successful keynote, Parrado signed an exclusive agreement with Davis as it was her efforts that convinced him to share his story after so many years. It was this partnership with Parrado which eventually anchored the creation of GDA Speakers. Davis is credited with bringing Parrado's harrowing experience to life in The New York Times best-selling book, Miracle in the Andes. Twenty-three years later, GDA Speakers continues to represent Parrado. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Andes crash, his story will be told through the upcoming Netflix movie, The Snow Society. Davis continues to discover new talent and under her passionate leadership, GDA Speakers has vetted and curated highly qualified speakers who they deliver to clients with confidence. Her successful business approach led to her being named the 2011-2012 President of the International Association of Speakers Bureaus (IASB). Previously developing new and improved education programs in her role as an IASB Governor, she has won numerous awards including the 2015 John Palmer Award, 2011 President's Award, 2010 Above and Beyond Award, and the 2007 Pace Setter Award. Davis is a frequent guest on podcasts sharing entrepreneurial insights, lessons in innovative leadership, and her vast knowledge of the speaker industry. Davis is an active member of the Entrepreneur Organization and a supporter of numerous community organizations. She was the co-chair of the 2014 Soup's On! Luncheon, the major fundraising force of The Stewpot Alliance - with that luncheon being the most successful to date. Named to the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College Board of Visitors, she went on to be awarded the 2018 Gaylord Distinguished Alumni Award. She was also honored by the Dallas Business Journal as one of Dallas' Top 25 Women in Business. Being drawn to the mountains, Davis enjoys hiking and has recently traversed 43 miles in Zion National Park. Merging her love for hiking and serving the community, she has also hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim as a part of a fundraiser for Project Athena and has walked over 120 miles on the Camino de Santiago hike in Spain. She is an Oklahoma native, graduating from the Gaylord College at the University of Oklahoma, and currently resides in Dallas, Texas. Recorded 01/31/2022.
