Why ignoring women endangers the climate | International Women's Day 2025

Outrage and Optimism

Are women the key to solving the climate crisis? Why are they - and children - so disproportionately affected by the issue? And how can men step up to support change? To mark International Women's Day, Christiana Figueres is joined by top climate scientist Dr Katharine Hayhoe. As well as being Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair at Texas Tech University, Katharine is an influential voice in communicating science at the ‘kitchen table' level. She and Christiana reflect on the barriers women face in STEM roles, Katharine's work with Science Moms highlights the impact of the crisis on children and the power of women in conversations about the climate. Women make up just over a third of STEM professionals in the United States and only a quarter of earth science professors globally. In an era where diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are being rolled back by President Donald Trump's government, there's never been a more urgent need for diverse voices in science. Leading data scientist Hannah Ritchie asks how we communicate in this new landscape. Plus, Katharine shares how her Evangelical Christian faith fuels—rather than conflicts with—her climate work, as she and Christiana they celebrate how love can be the driving force for all genders to unite for climate justice. Together with Christiana, co-hosts Tom Rivett-Carnac and Paul Dickinson reflect on why diverse perspectives lead to better solutions and ask how men can support greater gender equality in STEM. Throughout, we hear from incredible women worldwide with inspiring messages for International Women's Day. From Pat Mitchell and her work on Project Dandelion to Natalie Isaacs of 1 Million Women - plus a rallying cry from Fabian Dattner of Homeward Bound. Learn more

Women are very often the heart of the home and in Natalie Isaacs instance, she decided to initiate small steps starting in her home to begin having a positive impact on the environment. From cutting down her electricity bill to food waste, she saw first hand how these very small shifts started to add up. With that, she started 1 Million Women, the movement to empower women to initiate change for a better future. In this episode Natalie shares; How she realised she was the problem during her previous career as a cosmetics manufacturer, and the epiphany she had to change this How we must begin to live our lives and take ownership of the environment How something as small as cutting her electricity bill was the catalyst for change Why fast fashion and fast consumption is such a huge problem Asks us, do we truly love the earth and what is our relationship with her The spill over effect where the momentum you gain keeps propelling you forward Climate anxiety and despair, and how we must have radical hope Why women and children are set to become the most affected by the climate crisis And more! “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” ~ Helen Keller. Two Natural Ladies start with a discussion about what they did on the weekend and finished with how to decrease your Eco anxiety What did the TNL do on the weekend: * Hanging out in the local community * Picking up rubbish: Jo with her grandson; Vicki with her hubby. A quick discussion about weather and how to catch rubbish as it flies past then onto the rituals we create. Jo shares her daily “I experience” and then the constant rubbish that goes on in our heads. “Everyone has it handled better than us” Realising that we are all human and all have stuff going on. And that we need each other – are we all energy? We are not in competition we are all part of the same Universe. Vicki talks about gossip and how we can see people as infallible yet they are vulnerable as us. Jo suggests Two Natural Ladies become Prime Minister starting with their first edict: “Joy and compassion” everywhere. And for the Two Nautral Ladies to achieve this dream of being Prime Minister they will need a TEAM T.E.A.M: (Together Everyone Achieves More) Using each other's strengths Making a difference on all levels and taking time to ‘BE' – the balance between ‘doing' and ‘being' and it goes out of balance so quickly. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.' ~Margaret Mead Eco anxiety: Do we feel this because we aren't doing anything? Take a first step: Natalie Isaacs's story about starting her Eco journey by cutting her energy bills. There are so many different ways we can help. Damon Gameau's 2040 film – watch it and take the first step #Letsdoit321 –start picking up three pieces of rubbish and ask others to do the same. What makes the difference? A UK grandma, in her 70's took a year to clean up 52 beaches – but this is not possible for all of us – just start doing something.

At some point we need to say: “Up with this we will no longer put!” We can make a difference as was shown by Greta Thunberg, when she decided to take a day off school and protest in front of the government building in her capital city. This lead to children all over the world doing the same thing. Two Natural Ladies discuss Anne-Marie, the Zero Waste chef and her blog about 2020 and how we can all feel hopeful for 2021! “We can rapidly alter course. We the people changed our behaviours almost overnight last year. During the first Covid lockdowns, we began to wash our hands compulsively, physically distance from one another and wear our masks. Industry developed new Covid protocols. Covid has reined in our obsession with unattainable beauty standards” It looks like finally the rest of the world is catching up to the Two Natural Ladies

As we gear up to Earth Day on April 22, we're thinking about living more lightly on the planet. This year’s theme is Protect Our Species, and one of the quotes that inspired it is from Rachel Carson, who said, “In nature nothing exists alone.” This week's podcast guest is proof of that. She is Natalie Isaacs, the super-inspiring Australian movement builder behind 1 Million Women. Natalie is one-woman powerhouse who decided to harness that power of other women - heck, the whole of womankind! - to start a lifestyle revolution to fight climate change.  We discuss connectivity, community and staying focused, plus the fact that the strangest routes can lead you to where you want to be. How did Natalie transition from cosmetics producer (and plastic polluter) to eco warrior? What kickstarted the process, and kept her going? How does she bring others along with her? And how can you? “We as individuals and as citizens of the world have a) and obligation and b) the power," she says. "We have glorious power to act in our lives and rise above politics, because we cannot just wait for politicians and for governments to put in policies to fight climate change. We can’t wait! We have to get on with it!"
