Once considered bottom of the stylists pile by the upper echelons of fashion, so-called 'celebrity stylists' (sometimes 'red-carpet stylists') are suddenly being given the credit they think they deserve. As Zendaya's renowned stylist Law Roach explains: “There's been this idea that I'm supposed to be grateful [to have a celebrity client]. No. She's supposed to be grateful that she's working with me because I'm changing her life." Why and how are stylists changing their celebrity clients' lives? In this episode, Jo - herself a stylist with a couple of minor red carpets under her belt - explains the inner workings of "image strategies", and breaks down the most interesting of these at this year's Oscars. Ali, meanwhile, shares her joy at the growing trend of "borrowed" vintage for red carpets, Sydney Sweeney's 2004 Jolie gown as a case in point. "I imagine some giant Bell Street in Hollywood." Oh joy. The fashion industry produces 20% of global wastewater and more carbon emissions than ALL international flights and ALL maritime shipping COMBINED. If nothing changes, by 2050 the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world's carbon budget. Ex-Vogue journalist and founder of The Wardrobe Crisis (the book, podcast and academy) Clare Press joins me to wrestle the quandaries: Is vegan leather ethical? Are recycled plastic leggings green? What do you do with old stuff? That top you bought for a party three years ago, for example. You wore it once and it's been hanging in your wardrobe ever since. You could throw it away, but that seems wasteful – after all it's still perfectly usable. So, what to do? In the UK, we might take it to a charity shop.你用旧东西做什么?例如,你三年前为派对买的那件上衣。你穿过它一次,从那以后它就一直挂在你的衣橱里。你可以把它扔掉,但这似乎很浪费——毕竟它仍然完全可用。那么该怎么办?在英国,我们可能会把它带到慈善商店。The first charity shops appeared in Britain in the 19th Century. The Salvation Army, a UK charity, was one of the first to run a second-hand clothing shop to provide the impoverished and needy with affordable clothes. This was followed by charities such as the British Red Cross, who also relieved hardship and raised money for the war effort during World War Two. The modern form we know today was opened in 1947 by Oxfam.19世纪英国出现了第一家慈善商店。英国慈善机构救世军是最早开设二手服装店的机构之一,为贫困和有需要的人提供负担得起的衣服。紧随其后的是英国红十字会等慈善机构,他们也为二战期间的战争纾困并筹集资金。我们今天所知的现代形式是由乐施会于 1947 年开放的。These days, charity shops are a common sight with around 11,200 shops across the UK, according to the Charity Retail Association. During business hours any member of the public can donate their unwanted items to a charity shop – clothes, books, electronics, furniture. Most charity shops will take anything. These items are checked for wear and tear and if found still serviceable, priced up to be sold at a heavily discounted price.据慈善零售协会称,如今,慈善商店很常见,全英国约有 11,200 家商店。在工作时间,任何公众都可以将他们不需要的物品捐赠给慈善商店——衣服、书籍、电子产品、家具。大多数慈善商店会采取任何措施。检查这些物品的磨损情况,如果发现仍然可以使用,则定价以大幅折扣价出售。For many, this is a win-win situation. To the charity, it means a valuable source of revenue, which they can use to pursue their charitable aim. To the consumer, it provides the opportunity to buy, often extremely cheaply, items and clothes. Though previously owned, they are durable. To the donator, it declutters and may help to assuage consumer guilt. “You can make a pretty good case to yourself that you are doing good, because what you are doing is going towards a charitable cause [and] you are saving stuff from landfill,” Clare Press, fashion journalist and sustainable style advocate, tells the Guardian. Indeed, approximately £140 million worth of clothing alone goes into landfill each year, according to UK charity WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme. There are sometimes hidden treasures for the buyers, too. On more than one occasion a buyer has purchased something very cheaply, only to later discover its true value – such as a screen print bought for 99p and later found to be by English artist Ben Nicholson. It sold at auction for £4,200. So next time you need to rid yourself of something, spare a thought for the charity shop – after all, charity begins at home!有时买家也有隐藏的宝藏。不止一次,买家以非常便宜的价格购买了某样东西,但后来才发现它的真正价值——例如以 99 便士购买的丝网印刷品,后来发现是英国艺术家本·尼科尔森 (Ben Nicholson) 之手。它在拍卖会上以 4,200 英镑的价格售出。因此,下次您需要摆脱某些东西时,请考虑到慈善商店——毕竟,慈善始于家庭!词汇表throw away 扔掉wasteful 浪费的usable 能用的charity shop 慈善商店second-hand 二手的impoverished 贫困的needy 穷苦的,贫寒的relieve hardship 解困donate 捐出unwanted 不需要的,多余的wear and tear 磨损serviceable 可以使用的previously owned 二手的durable 耐用的declutter 清理(多余的物品)do good 做好事charitable cause 慈善事业sustainable 可持续的hidden treasure 隐藏的宝藏charity begins at home 好事从身边做起

Gordon Renouf from Good On You, chats to us about sustainable fashion. We all want to look good and stay up with the latest trends but how do we do this in a sustainable and ethical way? It's an area definitely worth solving as the global apparel industry accounts for an estimated 8% of emissions! That’s on par with the steel sector. It's a complex topic and one that is so confusing. Thankfully Gordon and his co-founder Sandra Capponi started Good on You, the #1 sustainability ratings platform for fashion brands. It independently rates brands and gives you an easy to understand overview of their supply chain sustainability and ethics. In this episode we cover: The challenges of the fashion industry to decarbonise Top tips for ensuring your fashion habits are more sustainable: hint - it’s just buying what you need Why Sydney’s love of linen might make it a more sustainable city than Melbourne Whether or not sustainable fashion is a class issue New types of emerging materials: like leather that’s made from mushrooms! Welcome to Episode 15! Have you ever considered sewing a garment entirely by hand? I must admit that it had literally never occurred to me until I got to speak with today's guest, Louisa Owen Sonstroem. This is the first of two Check Your Thread episodes with Louisa, and in this one we learn how a trained pattern cutter who works in the NY garment industry became an expert in this slow-sewing practice. We talk about how she fell in love with making her own clothes, but had an epiphany about her output of self-made garments, which reminded me of my conversation with Judith Staley for Episode 12 in fact. Louisa's response was to embrace hand sewing garments, which for her opened up a whole new facet of creating. Louisa now teaches in person and online workshops and has written a beautiful self-illustrated book called ‘Hand Sewing Clothing: A Guide'. In this conversation we talk about the ins and outs, the whys and the hows, and we bust a big ol' pile of myths about hand sewn clothing. In the introduction I recommended the following incredible podcast episodes to check out: The Wardrobe Crisis with Clare Press, Ep 150: Liz Ricketts - Waste Colonialism and Dead White Man's Clothes HERE. The Sustainable(ish) Podcast with Jen Gale, Ep 118: A Beginner's Guide to COP26 HERE. You can find Louisa Owen Sonstroem HERE. Louisa's book and other products are available via her Etsy shop HERE. In the UK, Louisa's book can be bought from Beyond Measure HERE.

Everyone's talking about climate action and social change - but Fashion is still carrying on like it's 1999. The velvet rope! Exclusivity! Snobbery and barriers to entry that lock many young designers with new ideas, out. Fashion weeks alone are massive carbon emissions, before we've even considered production. Pre-pandemic, the carbon footprint of media, buyers, models and designers going to the big four fashion weeks (NY, London, Milan & Paris), over a 12-month period, was enough to light up Times Square in New York for 58 years! And you're no doubt familiar with fashion's unfairness, murky supply chains and lack of diversity. Change is due. But the industry seems determined to get back to business as usual. This week's guest, London-based Kenyan fashion designer Anyango Mpinga has other ideas. Digital presentations could change the game, she says. But that's just one piece of the puzzle. Fashion must find it's heart again. In this inspiring conversation, Anyango and host Clare Press talk purpose, service and giving back - and how, in Anyango's case, coming from a family of strong African women has shaped her. The designer shares her advice for independents trying to be as sustainable as possible, and the broader industry that needs to do better on diversity and inclusion. It serves as a preface for this episode. In Part 1, Stevie shares about the work she's a part of through NFP organisation, The RT Foundation. The story of how Stevie became involved with what was the beginnings of theThe RT Foundation, at just 18 years of age, was the catalyst for a career shift and claimed a new mandate and purpose for her life therafter. Pre-COVID, Stevie would basically spend equal time in India as she does Australia each year. So, she's taken the opportunity, while international travel is on pause, to work remote and to see more of our beautiful country, living and travelling in her bus with ther two sons, aged 9 and 11. Stevie applies the concept of "conscious living" in her parenting, consumption of food and material pocessions, her general outlook on life and realationship with people and the world around. She's educating her children in a way that they wont become immune to the injustices they see in the world, rather advocate for the voiceless and instigate change wherever they can. Have you been trying to make ethical clothing choices but you sometimes have to (or want to) buy stuff at Kmart and then you feel really guilty?  For the last few years (and really forever) I’ve been trying to be properly ethical in my clothing choices.  I find it really hard to be totally perfect. I bought a gingham linen jumpsuit at Kmart last year for $25 and I absolutely love it. I wear it at least once a week but I’ve been feeling really guilty about buying it because Kmart aren’t transparent enough with their supply chain.  So where does that leave me? I decided to get an expert on the show this week - like a proper, proper expert. This week’s guest is Clare Press and she’s an ethical clothing mastermind. She has 2 podcasts - Wardrobe Crises and Ethical Fashion that’s produced in conjunction with the UN. Your guest host this week is Ayesha Barenblat, founder of ReMake, and she is in conversation with Nazma Akter, founder and Executive Director of the Awaj Foundation. Nazma has been fighting to improve workers’ rights in Bangladesh's garment sector for 30 years - and she started out as a garment worker herself, aged just 11. Hers is a powerful, persuasive, brilliant voice from the workers’ side. So why have't you heard it before? The answer is because fashion - yes, even sustainable fashion - operates with a power imbalance that too often shuts workers out. We rarely hear from the people who make our clothes, especially those in low-wage countries. Instead, we hear from brands talking about garment workers, or well meaning white people talking on their behalf. Mostly, we hear from those who make the decisions, rather than those who must live with them. But if we are to build a truly sustainable and ethical fashion industry, we must make space for the people who make our clothes. For this week's #sharethepodcastmic episode, Aja Barber is in charge. She's interviewing her friend, Kalkidan Legesse, founder of Sancho’s - a pioneering Black-owned sustainable fashion store in Exeter in the UK. Sancho's sells ethical and fair trade clothing, gifts and accessories from sustainable fashion brands like People Tree, Armedangels, Lefrik and Just Trade. They also really innovate with their pricing accessibility - and you'll hear all about that in this interview. What else gets unpacked? Kalkidan's Ethiopian roots and how returning to Addis Ababa as an adult sparked the idea for Sancho's. The million racist micro-aggressions people of colour face in the fashion industry (and everywhere else), who gets the power, and how to be an ethical leader. Here’s Aja on IG. A note from Clare: Welcome to Series 5, Share the Podcast Mic. After everything that's happened this year, we wanted to shake things up and share the power of this beautiful platform with some of the BIPOC voices leading the conversation in sustainability and ethical fashion. So after this episode, I'll be passing the Wardrobe Crisis mic onto them. Each will interview a person of their choice.  Your guest hosts are some of the most exciting, dynamic, inspirational voices working in this space today - as are their guests. I couldn't be more grateful to them all for sharing their experiences with us, and being part of this project.  I'm excited to bring you this contextual episode with the brilliant sustainable fashion writer, activist and stylist Aja Barber, before I pass the mic on to her as our very first guest host next week. It's all up discussion today: from allyship (when brands get it wrong & how to get it right) to fashion billionaires; white fragility, the dreaded Karens, and coddling vs. discomfort. We talk about how the system is rigged but we have the power to change it. Aja's vision for a sustainable fashion future? Press play to find out. For all the talk of inclusivity finally being taken seriously by fashion, the industry is way behind on many fronts. It basically ignores entire sections of the market, which makes no sense from a business perspective, and let alone a social one. Adaptive fashion is both an opportunity and a necessity - as this week's brilliant guest, author Keah Brown says, disabled people love clothes too. And they're tired of having to alter things that don't work for them. Accessible, adaptive design is the future, and forward-looking brands are taking note. Our chat covers everything from Keah's New York Fashion Week debut and how her hashtag #disabledandcute went viral to writing her first screen play and the finding joy in the everyday. This is an enlightening, bright interview full of inspiration. What a treat to have Keah on the podcast. Let us know what you think. You can find Clare on Instagram and Twitter. Philosophy! The Internet of Things! Irvin Penn! From not being Mozart to designing outfits for The Muppets, as a kid... It's all up for discussion in this week's ep with Levi's Vice President of Global Product Innovation, Paul Dillinger.  Paul drove Levi's Jacquard collaboration with Google, so of course we talk about that, and the future of tech innovation in fashion particularly around wearables. So of course we talk about that. But fundamentally, this is a conversation about why we wear what we wear, what fashion means and how we've used it across time to craft our identities. Oh, and sustainability. Basically, this is why we love to make podcasts. And Paul is the greatest. Enjoy! Got feedback? Fashion Industry Fix? Social & Environmental Standards

This week, our theme is Social and Environmental Sustainability Standards. Why do we need to talk about this? Standards exist. Indeed, some say there are too many. And yet problems in fashion's supply chains persist. The fashion industry is well known for it's labour issues and adverse environmental impacts. Are things improving? What is missing when it comes to compliance, collaboration and consumer input, and how might  increase transparency and accountability? To fill out the picture and explore the solutions, your hosts Simone Cipriani and Clare Press interview: Paola Deda, who works for the UN Economic Commission for Europe and is active in the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, Jill Dumain, CEO of the company behind the BlueSign certification system and Biatriz Cunha, a specialist in the textiles, clothing, leather, footwear sector at the ILO. If you think you're too small to make a difference in the world of fast fashion, think again. As Garik points out, have you ever spent the night with a mosquito? There's no such thing as too small of an impact! In Part 2 of the conversation, Garik and I are discussing how he operates his business, Eco-Stylist, how they deem if brands are ethical and sustainable, and how to watch out for the all-too-common practice of greenwashing! To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: www.heartfetlhippie.com Garik explains that Eco-Stylist uses high standards to measure how ethical and sustainable brands are. Unfortunately, not all brands are transparent with their manufacturing processes so this isn't always an easy task. Much of the media attempts to compile lists of sustainable brands themselves, but did you know that brands can pay to be associated with terms like “sustainable” even if they're not? Yeah, I'm talking about you, Everlane and H&M! Have no fear - Garik has done the research for us and has lists of brands and even curated collections of items that we can truly trust. Today on the show, Garik also gives tons of recommendations of websites, books, podcasts, and even movies that we can watch to learn more about these things. One of my favorites is his own blog where he deconstructs some of the myths behind ethical fashion. My favorite takeaway from the show today is the call to action that Garik leaves us with to make a difference. We are the change we want to see, and these changes start with us. We can't wait for our institutions to make rules about fast fashion - we have to be the one's to start this process! And the best news is that we already have started to have an impact. Acting as a bridge between fashion brands and artisan producers, the Ethical Fashion Initiative carefully measures the impact of each order, to ensure that the work is positively impacting the lives of the artisans, and that each project works towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is sometimes difficult, always rewarding work - and perhaps nowhere more so than in Afghanistan. There, the EFI's main fashion partner is Zarif Design. In this episode, your hosts Simone Cipriani and Clare Press sit down with Zarif's inspiring founder, Zolaykha Sherzad to hear how she established her social enterprise to bring beauty, harmony and hope to one corner of the city she grew up in.  Find out more at https://ethicalfashioninitiative.org/ Our music is from the original production From Kabul to Bamako, music directed by Saïd Assadi.
