In honor of Earth Day we have four environment and nature stories… Talk about grasping at straws – wait till you hear about the new cages being used to protect and rebuild Florida's dying coral reef! Speaking of the environment, you won't believe what a big group of Swiss grannies did to get their eco-warrior credentials. Taylor Swift releases her 11 album – hear what records she broke doing so. Hear a special report about a different kind of “swifty” from Indonesia gives new meaning to “spit and sawdust” when it comes to making their nests. And in Turkey a dog-squad are on the prowl in a major airport to help relieve stressed out travelers. All that and more this week!

If the First Industrial Revolution used water and steam to fundamentally change the nature of work, the current industrial revolution—the disruption of automation, information, the internet, and now AI—is transforming everything about the way we work, connect, and interact with the natural world. These changes have largely been regarded as a net good. After all, poverty across the world has fallen precipitously in the last 100 years. Life expectancy has nearly doubled. Literacy is four times higher. Hunger, malnutrition, war—all down. All good things. But today's guest, writer Paul Kingsworth, thinks that the way in which this progress has been achieved is detrimental not only to the environment but to our own mental and physical well-being—and that underneath the extreme wealth built by human society is a massive sense of human and spiritual loss. Paul is someone who has gone through a profound transformation over the past decade—and in a very public way. He was once considered one of the West's most radical and prominent environmentalists—even chaining himself to a bridge in protest of road construction and leading The Ecologist, a left-wing environmental magazine. But he became disillusioned with an environmental movement that he says became obsessed with cutting carbon emissions by any means, and in the process becoming captured by commercial interests. Paul and his family eventually left urban England to live off the land in rural Ireland, where they currently grow their own food and homeschool their children. Oh, and one more thing of note this Easter week: Paul converted from a practicing Buddhist and Wiccan to an Orthodox Christian—about as traditional as it gets. As you'll hear in this conversation, Paul explains why he intentionally “regressed.” In short: in our modern, hyper-connected, tech-obsessed world—what he calls “the age of the machine”—Paul and his family are trying to live wildly. We talk about what that looks like for him, and for any of us trying to be free; we talk about how the left has strayed from its original principles; why the West has abandoned God; and how to fight every day to live. . . simply. And for more of Paul's work, check out some my favorite essays including: “The Cross and the Machine,” “The View from the Cave,” and “The Vaccine Moment, Part One” and “The Vaccine Moment, Part Two.” Learn more about your ad choices. We begin with breaking news, as the US carries out major airstrikes in Iraq and Syria - in response to a drone strike that killed three US service members, and wounded more than 40 others, in Jordan earlier this week. Then - it's the greatest existential threat to humanity, and the extraordinary people doing something about it. CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir shows us the clean industrial revolution kicking into life to save our planet. Eco-warrior and former VP Al Gore is optimistic on climate activism. But he says “we've got to stop using the sky as an open sewer” now, if we want to save our planet from climate change. Gore also blasts MAGA Republicans for playing “petty” politics over the crisis at the southern border - while Ukraine runs dangerously low on munitions. With Ukraine's military aid stymied by political deadlock in DC, Putin is pressing his advantage with intensified attacks on the frontlines. In the Amanpour Archive this week - the similarities between the first Gulf War supply crunch, and Ukraine's munitions shortage today. And finally, DeepMind co-founder and tech savant Mustafa Suleyman on the opportunities and costs of using AI to supercharge productivity - as we enter what he calls “the most productive decade in history of our species.” Learn more about your ad choices. In 1993, an activist group calling themselves the Barbie Liberation Organization swapped out the voice boxes of talking Barbie and G.I. Joe toys and snuck them into stores for unsuspecting customers. Their aim was to publicly challenge the social norms they believed the toys represented. Thirty years later they are at it again. Spurred by the success of the “Barbie” movie this year, the group turned about 300 purchased Barbies into “Eco Warriors” modeled after climate activists like Greta Thunberg and Phoebe Plummer, and snuck them back into stores. On this episode of “The Eagle,” we talk to a member of the BLO about the operation, and how they pulled it off. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we get to share in the laughs with Di and Nicola as they catch up on Nicola's latest European adventure and Di's spring skiing trip to Thredbo - from jet skiing and super yachts to grounding and icy dips in the river, it's always fun to hear what they've been up to. After that, Di and Nicola chat with the passionate and inspiring Mandy Spooner about simple changes you can make to contribute to an eco-friendly planet. Mandy is known as the Eco Warrior, who loves educating and helping others with ways they can reduce the amount of toxins and plastic in their lives. She shares so many practical tips in this episode, that are all really doable, so we can't wait for you to listen in. In this chat, we hear how Mandy got started on this journey after reading an article in 2017 about how takeaway coffee cups aren't recyclable. Mandy couldn't believe what she was reading and went down the rabbit hole of finding out everything you need to know about single use plastic and researching different alternatives and ways that we can all live a more eco-friendly existence. Since that day, more than 5 years ago, she hasn't looked back and thankfully, she's now educating so many others about this important issue. Far from being doom and gloom, Mandy shares about the great companies and initiatives that are out there and the progress that we're making in recycling and sustainability. She's confident that if we all take small steps and inspire those around us, we can really achieve great things together. We're so grateful that Mandy flew down from the Sunshine Coast to be with us in our Sydney studio and we hope you feel as motivated as we did after speaking to her. Today's guest is British designer Katharine Hamnett, fashion's original eco-warrior and pioneer of sustainable fashion. Decades ago, Hamnett made the decision to shift to more ethical and pro-environmental practices, such as using organic cotton and natural dyes. It was an "unbelievably difficult" process, she says, because her own employees opposed her decision, sometimes secretly replacing her sustainable materials for unsustainable ones. Nevertheless, she has persisted, and eventually, she met her pro-planet and humanitarian goals: her clothes are made as ethically and environmentally responsible as possible. Hamnett, fashion's “Bad Girl with Integrity,” has proved that sustainable fashion is not only possible; it can be profitable. The environmentalists and eco-warriors of old used to arrive clutching home-made placards, herbal cigarettes and chains with which to affix themselves to site gates and construction and demolition equipment. The eco-warriors of today come armed with something far more formidable - Science.

Sometimes it takes someone to stand up and shoulder the burden of making a difference. Chad Pregracke grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River. He was appalled at the amount of garbage and pollution in the river and began a one-man mission to clean it up. He founded Living Lands and Waters and mobilized volunteers who, to date, have cleaned up over 10 million pounds of trash. Pregracke explains that we all have the responsibility of making a difference in our communities.

This week we are joined by Stephanie Cochrane, founder and owner of The Waste Less Shop in Manhattan Beach, CA. The Waste Less Shop was started from her natural love for our planet. Stephanie grew up in rural northern Nevada and by the age of 25 travelled to 30 countries, mostly to climb mountains. Her trek to the highest mountain on the planet, to swimming with sea turtles in Indonesia, snorkeling corral reefs in the South Pacific, and seeing our footprint negatively impacting those places hit her hard. She was overwhelmed with the most beautiful scenery she'd ever seen and seeing it strewn with trash affected her emotionally. All of these moments would bring The Waste Less Shop to life. It's the crossover you were waiting for, babeey. We watched a couple classic Simpsons episodes with Evan MacDonald (@MacDonaldTweets) of the world's #1 socialist film criticism podcast (to us), Kino Lefter. We use this to inform our discussion Postmedia bench warmer Matthew Lau's column on how Mr. Burns would support a Green New Deal.Yes, you read that correctly. Lau argues that this caricature of capitalist excess who tries to block out the sun so Springfield will have to depend on his (private) power monopoly, is an ecosocialist. It may not surprise you to learn that his argument is incredibly shallow and flimsy. Singapore has been widely praised internationally for its efforts in containing COVID-19 and limiting fatalities to two people so far. But concern is afoot as the number of COVID-19 cases in the small island state has doubled over a 48-hour timespan, with an estimated 200,000 citizens yet to return home from overseas. Meanwhile, the livelihoods of just about everyone in every industry have been hard hit, no less so for people working in the entertainment and creative industries in Singapore. In order to find out more about how Singaporeans are coping with COVID-19 and more, we speak to Singaporean actor, host, environmental activist and Netflix' Singapore Social star, Paul Foster. We ask Paul the following questions: 1. How are things in Singapore at the moment? 2. How have you been spending your time since the COVID-19 crisis started? 3. What is it about Singapore and Singaporeans' ability to simply get things done? 4. What environmental projects are you currently involved in? 5. Is there going to be a Season 2 of Singapore Social?
