What If You Stopped Showering for a Year?

What would happen if you quit showering for a year? While there hasn't been much experimentation on this subject, scientists do still know some consequences of this dirty decision. So let's find out exactly what they are! The good news is that it won't kill you. So, there's that. The bad news is that you definitely won't be a happy camper in the end or along the way. Without proper exfoliation, your skin will quickly become either super oily or really dry. And it doesn't matter which one it's gonna be, both imbalances lead to an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria. According to Dr. Carolyn Jacob, the director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, the oiliest parts of your body, such as your armpits, behind your ears, and so on, would slowly collect dirt and pollutants. Let's keep this nasty snowball going. The next major trouble you'll face is that you'd become way more prone to different types of infections. Since washing your hair and scalp come along with showering, then prepare yourself for some major itching on your head. As for a whole year without washing your face in the shower, your face would be covered in zits! And, of course, where there's bacteria and broken skin, there can be infections and health problems, so it's not just all about aesthetics here. There's actually a guy named Rob Greenfield who went a whole year without showering. According to the experts, there are a couple of tips that you should follow in order to shower the right way. Make sure the water temperature is not too hot because hot water will suck the moisture from your skin by removing a lot of your natural oils. Long showers can dry out your skin as well. Having two or three showers a day will do the same thing, so it's not that great of an idea either. Instead of lathering up your entire body, it's better to just stick to the areas with a bunch of sweat glands, such as your armpits, groin, underneath the breasts, and wherever else you tend to sweat a lot. You'd be scratching your scalp nonstop. -The oily sebum on your face would just keep building up along with bacteria. Your pores would get all clogged up with this nasty gunk, and there you go, you'd have new pimples popping up left and right. -It'll take at least a week for the skin to return to its normal state. -Ron says that it made him reconsider a lot of his life choices and that he came out a much happier person in the end. -Go with lukewarm water. Don't shower for longer than 10 minutes. Avoid over-soaping and use moisturizer after. Each US resident creates an average of 4.5 to 4.9 pounds of trash per day. For many, once it's in the garbage can, it's out of sight, out of mind. However, what if we lived our daily lives walking around with the waste we created? Not throwing it into a trash or recycling can, but having to carry our waste with us wherever we go. Would this change our perception? For 30 days, Environmental Activist Rob Greenfield [http://robgreenfield.org/] has been doing just that, wearing a suit that holds the waste he creates on a daily basis. He has set out to walk the streets in his suit to bring awareness to the amount of trash people create and inspire others to reduce, reuse, repair, refill, recycle, and of course, let the food scraps rot. His message is also one of rethinking – change the system that has made plastic ubiquitous and also encourages a throw away mentality. Rob has become a social media sensation by undertaking living experiments to inspire people to live sustainably and take personal and collective responsibility in solving environmental challenges. He has documented his bike rides across the US and South America; built and lived for years in tiny houses in San Diego, CA and Orlando, FL; and subsisted for a year growing his own food. Rob Greenfield is an activist and humanitarian dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world. He embarks on extreme projects to bring attention to important global issues and inspire positive change. In a time when many feel disempowered, he believes that our actions really do matter and that as individuals and communities we have the power to improve the world around us. Awhile back, he simplified his life down to just 44 possessions. Then there's the time he rode his bike across the U.S. while bathing only in natural water sources like lakes and rivers. In 2019, Rob embarked on what might be considered his most extreme feat yet: an entire year of growing and foraging all of his food in Orlando. No grocery stores, no restaurants, no takeout, no dinners cooked by friends. He says his weight didn't change, and he stayed in good health.Dalia caught up with Rob in Gulfport, just south of St. Petersburg, where he was staying with a friend. We chatted in the backyard over  glasses of homemade kombucha. In this conversation, Rob shares how the yearlong experiment impacted his social life, the kitchen appliance he swears by and advice  for how we can all eat a bit more sustainably. The sustainability, equity and justice activist has garnered a huge social media following with self-imposed challenges to raise awareness. Dalia started by asking Rob why he decided to give up grocery stores and restaurants for an entire year.Related episodes:Why You Should Stop Haggling at Florida's Farmers MarketsAlfresco Dining Tips from “Outdoorsy Diva” Lauren GayYaupon Brothers American Tea CompanyHacks to Help You Eat More VeggiesWhat's the Buzz About Florida Honey Bees?

Brad also has some physiological differences that make him unique; One lung and a heart that decided to reside on the right side of his chest. While Brad was growing up, searching for his sport, he discovered some of the limitations of his condition. When he found that cycling was something that he could do and do well he never looked back. One of his first and longest tours was a ride he did with adventurer, environmental activist, and entrepreneur Rob Greenfield. To bring awareness to food waste, a major problem in our society, this hardcore group of cyclists rode across the united states resupplying on discarded food from grocery stores and restaurants. Along the way, they would work with local garden centres to plant fruit trees and other plants to increase pollination in difficult areas.Brad was struggling to find community in his home town of St. John's, Newfoundland, so he's working on trying to increase awareness to cycling in his region. He and his wife started a weekly coffee outside group in his area to bring cyclists together. He's also part of a critical mass ride that occurs once a month, to motivate more people to ride bikes thereby increasing the need for more bike friendly infrastructure. He is also working on an Everesting project to raise money for the St John's Status of Women Council. Make a One Time Donation Become a Patreon Supporter Visit our Affiliate Partners During the conversation Rob shares what brought him to the project, some of his choices along the way, just how strict he is when he says he grows or forages all his food, and the potential to accomplish these goals, of a 100% self-procured local diet, in other climates. Find out more about Rob, his work and other projects, including those mentioned during his introduction, at RobGreenfield.TV.  In this conversation, I mentioned one of my favorite authors for growing our own food, Steve Solomon, and his book Gardening When it Counts. Because of the influence of that book on my views over the years, I'm giving away a copy over at Patreon.com/permaculturepodcast. That giveaway starts on May 8th and runs through May 18th, 2019, so head over there and leave a comment today to enter. As Rob also encourages us to forage, I'm also giving away a copy of Sam Thayer's The Forager's Harvest. Sam remains one of my favorite foraging authors and educators as his books stem from years of practice and refinement on the land and in the landscape. You'll also find that giveaway at Patreon.com/permaculturepodcast starting on May 18th and open for at least 10 days. Two things continue to resonate for me as I worked on editing this interview, and as I put the finishing touches on the show. The first is the project-based approach that Rob takes in these deep immersions, whether for this particular take on food, or when he wore all the trash he created as part of his bike journey, which you can see in the initial picture at his website RobGreenfield.TV. This project focused exploration is something all of us can use as a model to dive into a subject we're interested in, whatever that may be. We can pick one thing and see what we can learn about it, how far we can go, and the lessons we can pick up in a fixed amount of time. Maybe we want to spend the rainy season for our location learning to harvest water. Or to take a growing season to explore a particular plant from seed to harvest in different conditions in our garden. Or to take a year and see how little electricity or fossil fuels we can use. By creating conditions that test ourselves, we can learn more about our wants, needs, and limits, safely and productively that will, hopefully, lead us to better ways to honor the ethics of permaculture when our time with a given experiment comes to an end. The other side that sticks with me is from near the end where we talked about replicating this project in different climates. Given that humans populated the globe long before the prevalence of agriculture and subsisted through hunting, foraging, and, to borrow the language from M. Kat Anderson, tending the wild, why can't we procure all of our food from our local environment? Yes, if this were a full-time endeavor, as Rob is going through, it may mean we spend a lot more time on growing, gathering and preparing food, but what if we use that as an end goal and work our way back to where we are in the moment? To start by buying from our farmer's markets and co-ops while learning what we can about wild and forageable foods. To take the suggestions of Sara Bir and look for the abandoned fruit trees in our neighborhoods, or ask our neighbors if we can harvest from what they have. Each step brings us closer to a local, nutritious diet. If we find we cannot gain much of our food in this way, why not? What are the legal, environmental, or social factors keeping us from doing so? What can we do to change these limitations, personally and within our community? What are your thoughts on seeking 100% of your own food? Can you imagine doing this in your local environment? What skills or resources would you need to obtain to make these choices? Let me know by leaving a comment in the show notes or dropping a letter in the mail.
