Ailish Forfar and Justin Cuthbert kick things off with John Bartlett (1:38) ahead of the Montreal Canadians hosting the Winnipeg Jets at the Bell Centre. They discuss how the Jets have been performing without their star goaltender in the lineup, the Habs' injuries and struggles against the Senators last night, how Winnipeg have tried to fill in the void of Ehlers, which Habs could crack an Olympic roster, and much more. Then, Ailish and Justin discuss the latest reports surrounding the Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially looking to part ways. Later, Arden Zwelling joins the show (26:57) to discuss what the Jays are getting in Cody Ponce, what to expect from the Winter Meetings, what is next for the Jays' offseason, the outlook for the Jays' rotation next season, and more. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour joined OverDrive to discuss the season for the Hurricanes, the strength of the roster, the style of his team, the overtime performances for the roster, Nikolaj Ehlers' start with the team and more.
There was plenty of Jets news to discuss today at Cityplace and that was before the news about 37 was announced.
The Penguins dominated Toronto for 40 minutes before collapsing in the third, as the Leafs flipped the script despite continuing to look out of sorts. Even Craig Berube is flummoxed as to why his team can’t piece together 60 good minutes. In St. Louis, the Blues edged the Oilers late, overshadowing Connor McDavid becoming the 4th-fastest player ever to reach 1,100 points - though he didn’t record a shot on goal, a concerning trend for a player of his caliber on a roster that still feels a forward short. Winnipeg about to get a major boost with Adam Lowry’s return from hip surgery, the Jets have jumped out to another strong start, even after losing Ehlers and their captain on the shelf. Jonathan Toews’ faceoff dominance and unexpected scoring touch have also been revelations. Out West, the Kraken and Ducks are a surprising sight atop the Pacific division, with Seattle unbeaten at home and Anaheim’s young, fast core surging ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Pierre-Luc Dubois’ serious injury leaves Washington in a bind: last season’s magic isn’t repeating, and the Caps may need to dip into their prospect pool to find a 2nd-line centre... if one is even available.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, Neil Smith and Vic Morren dissect the Winnipeg Jets, who entered 2025 as the surprise Presidents' Trophy winners—only to fall in the second round of the playoffs. After a miraculous comeback in Game 7 vs. St. Louis, the Jets were grounded by the Dallas Stars—and the split personality home/road record (6–1 at home, 0–6 on the road) told the story. Now, with Nikolaj Ehlers gone, Connor Hellebuyck under scrutiny, and Jonathan Toews making a shocking return, is this team still built to contend?
In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren break down the Carolina Hurricanes' offseason, their consistent regular season success, and the lingering concerns that have prevented them from reaching the Stanley Cup Final—despite three Conference Final appearances in the last seven years. The Canes finished second in the Metro Division with 99 points in 2024–25 and made quick work of New Jersey and Washington before falling to Florida in five games in the Eastern Conference Final—again.Neil and Vic analyze the team's latest acquisitions, including the high-profile signing of Nikolaj Ehlers from Winnipeg, and the trade for K'Andre Miller from the Rangers. They also examine what's lost with the departures of Brent Burns, Dmitry Orlov, and Scott Morrow, and how the defense corps now leans heavily on Jacob Slavin, Alexander Nikishin, and Jalen Chatfield. The episode also features a fascinating side story: Rod Brind'Amour's son Skyler Brind'Amour and Keith Primeau's son Caden Primeau are now teammates—23 years after their fathers were traded for each other.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Summer Coolers intro: Carolina Hurricanes outlook[00:36] 2024–25 season recap: Regular season strong, playoffs stalled[01:10] Forwards set: Ehlers, Aho, Jarvis, Svechnikov, Blake, Martinook[02:00] Defense changes: Miller in, Burns, Orlov, and Morrow out[03:00] K'Andre Miller's fit and the high cost of acquisition[03:43] Goaltending concerns: Freddie Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov, Caden Primeau[05:00] Re-signings and RFA updates: Suzuki, Skyler Brind'Amour, Stan Coven[06:00] The Brind'Amour–Primeau trade connection, 23 years later[06:50] Jacob Slavin's leadership and Shane Gostisbehere's PP role[08:00] Are the Hurricanes truly better than last year?[09:00] Why Carolina dominates the regular season but stalls in May[10:30] The need for playoff-style hockey to break through[11:00] Final verdict: Metro favorite—but Cup contender?KEY TAKEAWAYS:Carolina remains one of the NHL's most consistent regular-season teams, but hasn't been able to convert that into a Stanley Cup Final appearance.Nikolaj Ehlers' signing adds another skilled forward, but may not be enough to change the team's playoff identity. The defense is in transition, with Burns and Orlov gone and K'Andre Miller's growth now a key variable.Goaltending remains a concern, and a major question mark heading into 2025–26.Carolina must learn to play playoff-style hockey earlier—and more consistently—if they hope to get over the hump.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #K'AndreMiller #NikolajEhlers #SebastianAho #AndreiSvechnikov #SethJarvis #JacksonBlake #TaylorHall #JordanMartinook #LoganStankoven #JordanStaal #K'AndreMiller #ScottMorrow #MikeReilly #CaydenPrimeau #SkylerBrind'Amour #FrederikAndersen #EricRobinson #RyanSuzuki #RodBrind'Amour #KeithPrimeau #BrentBurns #DmitryOrlov #PyotrKochetkov #AlexanderNikishin #JaccobSlavin #JalenChatfield #ShayneGostisbehere #SeanWalker #EricTulsky
Maren A. Ehlers's Give and Take: Poverty and the Status Order in Early Modern Japan (Harvard University Asia Center, 2018) examines the ways in which ordinary subjects—including many so-called outcastes and other marginalized groups—participated in the administration and regulation of society in Tokugawa Japan. Within this context, the book focuses on self-governing occupation-based and other status groups and explore their roles making Tokugawa Japan tick. The title, Give and Take, is part of Ehlers's argument about the ways in which their relationship to government was one of reciprocity between ostensibly benevolent rulers and dutybound status groups. Within this, Ehlers evinces a special interest in marginalized groups and in poverty, especially “beggar bosses” and blind guilds. Through a detailed examination of an extraordinary collection of primary sources from the castle town of Ōno (Fukui prefecture), Ehlers uses the case study of approaches to the problems of poverty to enrich our understanding of the complex dynamics of interconnectivity and reciprocity that characterized Japan under Tokugawa rule. Today, Hunter was joined once again the Texas Indigent Defense Commission Executive Director, Scott Ehlers. This time, Scott and Hunter explore a slow moving crisis in Texas Public Defense: an absolute lack of attorneys in rural parts of the state. As with so many states with large rural areas, attorneys are retiring faster than they can be replaced.
