There's living coral, and then there's Coral—the iconicity and imaginary of living coral. As Melody Jue writes in Coralations, coral alternates between signifying an organism and signifying an environment, all too often imagined as a tourist destination. In rethinking the limitations of Coral, Jue opens up possibilities for a more expansive sense of environmental media, more inclusive goals for multispecies justice, and more nuanced forms of oceanic care work. Here, Jue is joined in conversation with Ann Elias. Melody Jue is associate professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The ocean holds clues to past civilisations and cultures, provides a rich resource for new medicines and treatments, but more importantly, is home to millions of undiscovered species. Ocean scientists around the world have been seeking to unlock its secrets, but only just over 20% of the ocean floor is mapped. What lives, feeds and breeds down there in the icy depths remains a huge mystery. Large-scale extraction of ocean species like cod, herring, tuna, swordfish and halibut, has brought the collapse of these wild populations by about 90% in just the last few decades. But, a new wave of understanding about why the ocean matters is bringing a glimmer of hope. On this episode of Climate Connections, Dr Sylvia Earle, Founder of Mission Blue & National Geographic Society Explorer in Residence - who has dedicated her life to explore, study and protect the oceans - shares first-hand insights on her dives into the deep blue and why exploration is an important step in educating the masses. She also dives into what she’s hoping to achieve when she leads Ocean Geographic’s BIG ACE Expedition to ground-zero of the climate crisis: the Arctic, in line with her 90th birthday next year (2025). Send me a messageDr Vanessa Pirotta is a whale scientist, an author, an educator, an entrepreneur and a social media sensation. I read Vanessa's book recently - Humpback Highway - and was captivated by the stories of her work and research in the presence of these majestic and remarkable creatures. I remember visiting beaches in Sydney during the humpack's migratory seasons and being amazed by catching glimpses of their existence out at sea. Over the last thirty years humpbacks have continued to recover their population numbers right around the world - a rare species conservation success story.Vanessa is one of Australia's most recognisable scientists through the work she does both on social media and regular tv appearances. In the last couple of months she was awarded the Winner of the Emerging Leader in Science category of the 2024 Women's Agenda Leadership Awards, hosted the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science for the second time and was a finalist in the Celestion Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. Vanessa is certainly someone on the move, and getting to spend all this time with her and get to know her a little beyond the whale research and incredible encounters she's had with them was an honour. With all the chat recently in corporate and government circles about the great utopian vision of nature positive, I couldn't help but reflect on the depth and quality of Vanessa's knowledge of a few species that call the ocean home and its relevance to these other conversations. The work done to recover some whale populations here and around the world hasn't come through fantasy nature repair bills or biodiversity markets, but the role of science based protections and restrictions on human behaviour supported by effective enforcement mechanisms. Vanessa's work in helping us better understand whales, their health and their lives points to a broader opportunity for how humans by in large need to get out of the way of non human species and focus on these types of initiatives as opposed to the financialsation and commodification of nature on a species by species basis. What an experience this was. Vanessa is clearly a rising star, and to hear about the radical transformation her life has undergone in just five years was remarkable and testament to her tenacity, passion and strength. It reminded me that it's important to step back and contemplate not so much what we can achieve just today, or this week, but over the course of an entire year, five years, a decade. This path is a long one, one without end, and Vanessa is forging one that hasn't existed before. The November edition of the newsletter is on the theme of Hope - and with Vanessa and her work in understanding whales, I was reminded of the remarkable life and work of Sylvia Earle who for more than 60 years has been researching and communicating about the oceans of this planet. “I hope for your help to explore and protect the wild ocean in ways that will restore the health and, in so doing, secure hope for humankind. Health to the ocean means health for us.”Til next time, thanks for listening.Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. This topic is currently being discussed at COP28 in Dubai, where the critical role of ocean animals, particularly marine mammals like whales, in capturing and storing carbon to fight climate change is being highlighted. The episode also emphasizes that protecting whales and dolphins can effectively reduce greenhouse gases. The whale and dolphin conservation group advocates for recognizing these ocean giants as a solution to the climate change crisis, with a role just as crucial as rainforests. The report "Whales in Hot Water" warns that climate change is adversely affecting whale populations by undermining their health and reproductive capabilities. It identifies warming oceans as a significant threat to numerous animal species. Dr. Sylvia Earle stresses the importance of safeguarding ocean habitats and draws attention to the damage caused by climate change. She firmly believes that an ocean teeming with whales and dolphins can play a vital role in combating climate change. Dr. Earle argues that it is imperative for people to comprehend the potential loss if habitats continue to be destroyed. She urges action at COP28 to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of climate change on oceans and the potential of healthy oceans to mitigate climate change. The episode also explores the connection between a healthy ocean and the well-being of marine animals. It emphasizes that protecting the ocean from various threats, including climate change, is essential for maintaining healthy populations of whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals. Additionally, thriving populations of phytoplankton, corals, seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes contribute significantly to reducing climate change. The episode highlights the decline in krill populations, which serve as a major food source for baleen whales in the Southern Ocean. The decrease in krill has resulted in changes in animal migration patterns and prey selection. The WDC report underscores the need to protect these animals and emphasizes the role of whales and dolphins as a lifeline in the battle against climate change. Overall, the episode underscores the significance of preserving ocean habitats and addressing climate change to ensure the well-being of marine animals and mitigate the effects of climate change. The podcast actively encourages listeners to share their thoughts on protecting marine mammals and to take action for ocean conservation. The host expresses a desire to hear from listeners about their strategies for protecting whales, dolphins, and marine mammals in their respective countries. Furthermore, the host encourages listeners to share the podcast with others who may have an interest in learning more. This indicates that the podcast aims to engage its audience and inspire them to actively participate in protecting marine mammals and conserving the ocean.

Sustainable World Radio- Ecology and Permaculture Podcast

Episode 166: Did you know that oceans make life possible on our planet? Even if we live far from the coast, our lives are influenced by the ocean. Oceans generate oxygen, capture carbon, shape weather, and provide habitat for countless creatures.  To learn more about these vast, yet fragile bodies of water that make our planet unique, beautiful, and able to support life, I speak with world renowned ocean scientist and explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle. In this inspirational interview, Sylvia shares her thoughts about what we can do to help our oceans and why urgent action is needed now. We discuss some of the threats that oceans face including acidification due to climate change, industrial fishing, and pollutants.  Sylvia reflects on a lifetime of learning and exploration and shares why she is so positive about the future. She tells us what it's like to live underwater for weeks at a time, how fish have different personalities, and why Menhaden matter. Sylvia calls upon each of us to be part of the solution and stresses that what we do has an impact. Sylvia believes that we have the power, knowledge, and technology necessary to save our oceans and to honor the living world that makes our existence possible. This is an all hands on deck moment. We live on a miracle, a blue planet that functions in our favor and provides us with water and air. Each of us has a part to play in preserving, restoring, and celebrating our oceans, and in doing so, saving ourselves and the environment. Dr. Sylvia Earle is called "Her Deepness" by The New Yorker and the New York Times, a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress, and the "First Hero for the Planet" by Time magazine. Sylvia is the author of more than 200 publications, including the new book National Geographic Ocean: A Global Odyssey which was written as a love letter to a gravely imperiled friend and a call to action to humans everywhere. Sylvia is the Founder of Mission Blue, a nonprofit that inspires action to explore and protect the ocean. She is also a National Geographic Explorer at Large and former Chief Scientist of NOAA.
