If you thought Catch Me If You Can's Frank Abagnale Jr. had an impressive resume, wait until you hear the list of professions tackled by Andrew Levine (CEO of Koinos). Like Abagnale, Andrew was a lawyer, but beyond that, he also has a background in real estate, and he was a founder, and a cryptoeconomist, and a community liaison, and a head of communications and advocacy, and now, a CEO. In 2016, Andrew found his footing in the crypto space via the Steem blockchain, first as a content creator, then as a Steemit Inc. employee. After co-founder Ned Scott announced he had sold Steemit to TRON founder Justin Sun, Andrew resigned, but he maintains Steem is the greatest blockchain you've never heard of.

Being involved in the Steem blockchain has been a wild ride. Not just over the past several weeks as we've dealt with the unpredictable and erratic behavior of Justin Sun and his team, but also over the past several years as we've dealt with the deadweight of Steemit, Inc. led by Ned Scott. Over the past 3-4 days, we saw the launch of the Hive Blockchain — a fork of the Steem blockchain that is led by the vast majority of the Steem community. As many have said, this is no ordinary fork of a blockchain. One of the primary reasons why this is no ordinary fork is because there is such a profound majority of people backing the fork comparative to the “original chain”. In blockchain speak, the network with the most backing is the one who will succeed the most. Steem is now a centralized chain. I wouldn't even call it a blockchain at this point because Justin Sun controls all 20 of the witnesses (even the ones he claims are “community-operated” which to him is another word for “witnesses-I-bribed”). Hive is a true blockchain. It is truly decentralized. There is no CEO of Hive. There is no company behind Hive. There really isn't even an “organization” behind Hive in the traditional sense. What governs Hive is an active group of community members who love decentralization and love content and love creativity and developing dApps that people use each and every day. For these reasons and more, Hive has vastly more potential than Steem ever did. I talk about these reasons in today's episode of the LeoFinance podcast. In This Episode: Hive Has Community-Ownership. Twitter and Facebook stock prices dropped 20% this week, which was a HUGE drop, and the largest single-day-drop in facebook's history. The growth of these social media behemoths seems to be stalling, as people find alternative platforms. One such platform might be Steemit, where users can actually earn money for posting content. I chatted to Ned Scott, CEO of Steemit, while at Consensus this year. If you liked this, please subscribe to my YouTube Channel! I have a new book! STEEM is revolutionizing the way creators get paid. I've cashed out over $4,000 from writing on the STEEM blockchain. The most amazing thing is – nobody had to pay me a dime. You heard me interview STEEM co-creator Ned Scott on episode 71. I explained how to make money on STEEM on episode 110. This short read is an updated and slightly expanded version of that free episode. Grab the new book – on Kindle, Paperback, or Audible – at kadavy.net/steembook
Something that has been on the top of my mind the past few years is how creators can make an honest living from their work. You heard me talk with Hooked author Nir Eyal back on episode 21 about how technology is fragmenting attention, for example. These economics incentivize creators to be outlandish or even dishonest. But, the blockchain and cryptocurrencies may change all of that. I've been earning money for my writing lately on the STEEM blockchain, on a social network called Steemit. You heard me talk to STEEM's CEO, Ned Scott back on episode 71. I recently cashed in over $1,000 in STEEM cryptocurrency. Today I'll be giving a basic introduction to making money on Steemit. You'll learn: Where does the money come from? I cash in the STEEM Tokens I earn, but why are they worth anything? What are the various forms of STEEM, and what are they for? I'll talk about STEEM, STEEM Power, and STEEM Dollars. Once you earn STEEM, how can you convert it to USD? I'll give you the gist in this episode, but for step-by-step instructions, visit the original post for my beginner's guide to STEEM Buy The Heart to Start on Amazon You have something to offer the world. On tonight's episode episode of "The Crypto Show," we interview Ned Scott, CEO and Founder of Steemit, about Steemit and its upcoming "smart media tokens." Then in the second hour Frank Bacon, Steemit blogger and avid Steemit promoter, informs us of some of the less obvious but quite profound opportunities that Steemit can provide.
Ned Scott (@certainassets, Steemit: @ned is trying to reinvent the way content gets made. He wants you to get paid in the process. Ned is the co-founder of a cryptocurrency called STEEM, and he's CEO of a website that runs on STEEM, called Steemit. Basically all of the actions that you would normally take on a site such as Reddit – writing posts, upvoting, or commenting, mines the STEEM – that's S-T-E-E-M – cryptocurrency. You can then cash in that cryptocurrency for the currency of your choice. The attention economy and digital distraction You've heard me talk about the economics of digital distraction on the podcast before. Hooked author Nir Eyal and I talked about it on episode 21. Companies such as Facebook steal your attention, because the current models of supporting content creation incentivize them to do so. For example, because the bulk of Facebook's revenue is from ads, they want you to spend as much time on your news feed as possible. This then incentivizes content creators to create the most attention-grabbing content possible. They'll use tactics such as inciting rage – even if it means ruining an innocent person's life. We saw this tactic backfire when Gawker outed a closeted gay executive. Or, they'll just plain lie – which is something we're seeing with the current "fake news" crisis. The incentives of the attention economy By the way, I discussed some of these incentives with Ryan Holiday on episode 31. Ryan wrote a great book on the subject with Trust Me, I'm Lying. Will STEEM incentivize different behavior? Well, that remains to be seen. Many journalists are currently paid by the page view. I have journalist friends who have worked at a respectable newspaper, and their performance was measured by the page views on their stories. Think about that for a second. They weren't allowed to own stocks because it would be considered a conflict of interest in case they had to write about one of those companies, but somehow being rewarded by the page view is not a conflict of interest? So if journalists are no longer paid by the page view, but instead by their work being upvoted – the incentives will shift somehow. It's hard to say whether it would be good or bad, but they will shift. Spending attention vs. spending STEEM My theory is that we spend our attention far differently from how we spend our money. We're wired not to see the fruit in the bush, but rather the tiger behind the fruit in the bush. With STEEM we aren't spending our money, per-se, but there appears to be a different psychology to upvoting on Steemit. I'm sure those incentives bring along other quirks. From what I've seen, the most popular content – hence the content that has earned the most money – on Steemit is about STEEM. Content like this podcast, I guess. Other than that, like I say, it remains to be seen. To wrap your head around it, I'd recommend signing up at Steemit.com, and looking around. By the way, my Steemit username is kadavy, so let's connect there. Can you earn money on Steemit? I've been a STEEM user (@kadavy), or rather I've used the website Steemit (yes, it's a little confusing at first), for several months now. I've converted some of my STEEM to Bitcoin, just to run a test. So far, I've earned spendable money for using Steemit. And, as I record this, the total value of all of the STEEM that is out there is at over 50 million dollars. Where does that money come from? How does STEEM work? Why might it work in the long run? and why might it not work? Ned and I will talk about all of that and more in this conversation. Remember, none of this is investment advice, just an exploration of a potential new way to incentivize content creation. Seth Godin interview coming soon! My guest today is Jeff Berwick, Founder of www.StockHouse.com, Founder of The Dollar Vigilante, Host of Anarchast Podcast and creator of the largest Anarchist conference Anarchapulco. What you are going to LEARN in this episode: What is was like to be a Digital Entrepreneur during the 90’s tech bubble Why Jeff started The Dollar Vigilante and what it’s purpose is Why working “crappy” jobs is better than going to high school How Bitcoin and blockchains are changing the way that digital communities are being created Why Anarchists should become entrepreneurs A lot of us are just now learning about and trying to become digital entrepreneurs, but my guest Jeff Berwick has been one for over 20 years. Back in the 90’s, while working at a bank, he created the website www.StockHouse.com which had ~20,000 subscribers. The site was basically the MarketWatch.com of Canada. After growing to 250 employees in 12 countries, Jeff experienced the Tech Bubble crash and found himself with only 12 employees all in Canada. After reading The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin, Jeff decided to sell StockHouse.com and travel the world to find economic truths. He had figured out that the government’s money (aka fiat money) was a fraud and a ponzi scheme and dedicated his life to helping others see this truth. In 2011, Jeff was introduced to Bitcoin and it changed his life. Not only was Bitcoin a global currency, it was also not controlled by a nation state and was limited in supply. Jeff quickly realized that this mean the Freedom of Money could once again be had by the general populous. He created a successful economic and investing newsletter called The Dollar Vigilante to help others understand the fraud of paper currency. Since then, Jeff has created the Anarchast podcast as well as the “world’s largest Anarchist Conference” in Anarchapulco (where I will be speaking in Feb 2017). Networking with like-minded people is so important and I highly recommend you check out the Anarchapulco conference. Sign up through my affiliate link and receive 10% off the listed price. Few crypto projects have gotten as much attention and caused as much controversy as Steem. The blockchain-based social media platform launched early this year and managed to gain real user traction building up a vibrant community of contributors. The Steem token quickly entered bubble territory reaching a market cap of almost $400m and losing 90% of its value since. Steem Co-Founder and CEO Ned Scott joined us to discuss the ambition of the project and its short tumultous history. We also discussed some of the accusations against Steem and its unorthodox launch. Topics covered in this episode: How Steem was launched out of the BitShares community The different components and tokens of the Steem system How Steem rewards content contributors The controversial Steem launch and criticisms of the project Why Steem transitioned from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake The potential disbalance of power due to the Steem distribution How Steem managed to build a vibrant user community Episode links: Steem Website Steemit.com Why Every Blockchain Needs a Constitution Charlie Shrem Article on Steem Launch The History of Steem Launch in Words of Dan Larimer Bitcoin Talk Thread on Steem Launch Bitcoin Stackexchange: What is Steem? Today’s guest is Ned Scott, CEO of Steemit.com and the crypto-currency Steem which is a blockchain built to reward and incentivize content creation and social media engagement. Basically it’s a website like Facebook or Reddit, where people can follow others, post content and engage in the online community, but there’s a difference. Unlike Facebook and Reddit, where users only get “good feels” when someone LIKES your post, on Steemit.com you actually get awarded with the crypto-currency, Steem, which currently has a value of ~$1 each. I”ve seen people, like Jeff Berwick, make $16,000 on a single post. Trust me, I was in disbelief at first too. Now, there are PLENTY of people who call Steemit.com and the Steem crypto-token a scam and a pyrimid scheme. There are various reasons why fellow crypto-friends either don’t understand or don’t trust Steem; many of them have valid reasons. Ned and I chat about the economics of Steem and how they created a coin, wrapped in smart contracts to incentivize and build the type of community they wanted to build. Coming from a background of Austrian Economics, I’m dig deep to get answers to some of the most fundamental concerns about Steem and try to find out if it’s actually a scam or not. My conclusion? Well...you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out. If Ned is correct, and he’s been able to create a new type of social media platform community that rewards content creators and engagements, then social media has changed forever. That’s no embellishment. If we can now organize ourselves in voluntary communities, based on a common interest, use a blockchain to permanently store our collective content/information/communications and also reward and incentivize each other to create the kind of content that we want...then we’ve entered into a new era of peaceful Anarchy and Voluntaryism. I encourage you to listen to this interview with an open mind. Listen to how the blockchain is being utilized and how it is creating value in the communities that we voluntarily belong to and choose freely.
