Intro.(2:22) - Start of interview.(3:04) - Aaron's "origin story". He grew up in New Jersey. After law school he founded a tech company focused on user generated content that got bought by Wikia (the for-profit sister company of Wikipedia). He later practiced law at a few law firms before joining the faculty at Cardozo Law School in 2014. He got interested in Bitcoin early on, and collaborated on the launch of Ethereum. He co-authored a book called The Rule of Code, Blockchain and the Law (2018). He's been constantly playing around with the technology itself and he co-founded OpenLaw, which makes it easy to create legal agreements that work with Ethereum. Most recently he's been spending a lot of time pulling together a bunch of DAOs.(5:13) - How blockchain can disrupt corporate governance. The history of DAOs (6:35). Dan Larimer's Decentralized Autonomous Companies (DACs) article (2013). The concept of DAOs picked up with the Ethereum blockchain. Beyond just corporations, to organizations generally. A lot of people think about blockchain as a system to transfer value in a fast way (~12 mins for Bitcoin and ~12 secs for Ethereum). But beyond this transfer of value, blockchain can also be understood as a system to coordinate disparate people with a set of smart contracts. This allows a new way to structure organizations.(12:13) - The story of The DAO (2016). "It was pretty revolutionary in terms of its objective." After the project got hacked, it led to "quite a dramatic (governance-related) decision to fork the Ethereum network." For a number of years, people had "PTSDAO", they were afraid of other hacks. "But about 2-2.5 years ago that started to change, PTSDAO began to wear off and developers began to look at this problem again." New DAO platforms and tooling emerged, the most notable example of them was Moloch DAO (it provided grants to Ethereum projects). More innovation followed, and DAOs were capable of not only giving grants but also making investments. "There has been a sort of explosion of DAOs." To put some numbers to it, "In Feb 2019 there was ~$10m in these DAO like structures with ~2,000 users, today depending on the numbers you look at, it's north of $10bn with several hundreds of thousands of users."(20:30) - His article "The Rise of DAOs: Opportunities and Challenges" (Stanford Journal of Blockchain, Law & Policy, 2021). Questions on legal frameworks for DAOs: partnerships, LLCs, new state DAO LLC laws: Vermont and Wyoming. Unincorporated Non-Profit Associations (UNAs). Wrapped and unwrapped DAOs. How to think about interests in DAOs (securities or something different like member-managed partnerships). Separating economic and governance rights. Are tradable governance rights securities? Grey zone.(29:58) - His take on The LAO (the DAO that he co-founded focused on venture investments). "This was an effort to reboot the original The DAO concept but in a compliant US law format." It's structured as a Delaware LLC, with changes in its operating agreement that waived fiduciary duties and conflicts of interests. Core decision-making was delegated to a smart contract (code). They pooled capital (in Ether), members were only permitted to purchase up to 9% of the LAO (most purchased between 1-2%). There are about 75 members, scattered around the world, chatting via discord, all decisions are made via blockchain-based voting. "It's created a hive-mind." "Instead of having a few people in charge like in a VC fund, you have a collective group." "The decision-making has been pretty great." "The members of the DAO have been able to move faster than traditional VC funds, generating a higher rate of return (still early so TBD) and better at predicting the future of the market, such as with NFTs." "A network of capital deployers"(37:21) - On DAOs' decision making (7 day voting period), rough consensus (no quorum requirement) and internal mechanisms. Faster and better decision-making (time will tell if the latter is true). Each member is provided with "ragequit" rights (automatic redemption rights). "[I]t usually happens at the beginning, when they join a DAO and they either don't have the time to participate and they feel they should, or they decide they didn't like the opportunity as much."(41:20) - On FlamingoDAO and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Inside TheLAO many members wanted to back NFT projects. A question emerged internally to either invest in the projects or buy the art. They decided to do both. In Oct 2020 Flamingo DAO was born. Now they have 9 different DAOs ("about $200m in ETH has been contributed to these DAOs", over 200 people):The LAO (VC investments, it can invest in equity or tokens, could lead a round, draft a term sheet, nominate a board member who could be any member of the DAO - it hasn't done so yet). How people can become members (accredited investors).Flamingo DAO (NFT projects and art). "It started with a contribution of about 6,000 ETH ($6M at the time) and now if new members want to join they are valuing Flamingo DAO's interests at over $1 billion." (in just a year of existence!)Neptune DAO (DeFi)Neon DAO (Metaverse). "It was opened up last week, it took 40mins to close. It's a $20 million vehicle." ("that process for a VC fund or hedge fund would take 3-6 months.").Red DAO (digital fashion)ReadyPlayer DAO (gaming)Museo (NFT-native museum, art collection)Two more in development.(52:33) - On Sequoia's move to a permanent fund, "[I]t mirrors the structure of our DAO network." The LAO operates like a DAO of DAOs (like Sequoia's permanent fund).(53:59) - His fascination with DAOs: "a lot of it is corporate governance theory at its core." "Blockchain technology is providing a laboratory to play around and geek out on corporate governance." "Maybe [in a digital world] it's better: 1) to have rough consensus voting instead of quorum voting, 2) to have a broader base of decision makers for investing instead of a few people [like in a traditional VC fund], 3) to have more flexible redemption rights instead of lock-up windows or capital calls, 4) to have people provide more capital upfront, 5) to delegate voting rights to other members (different ways to provide proxy voting).(56:49) - His favorite books:Infotopia by Cass Sunstein (2006)Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek (1944)Fans, Bloggers and Gamers. Exploring Participatory Culture. by Henry Jenkins (2006) The Wealth of Networks by Yochai Benkler (2006)Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace by Lawrence Lessig (2000)(58:02) - His mentors:Jimmy Wales (founder of Wikipedia).Gil Penchina (former CEO of Wikia). When he was a lawyer in private practice he learned a lot from the litigators and corporate attorneys he worked with.David Roon (co-founder at OpenLaw, soon to be re-named Tribute Labs)Brett Frischman (mentored him at Cardozo Law School)(1:00:05) - An unusual or absurd habit that he loves: loves walking.(1:00:30) - The living person he most admires: his mother.Aaron Wright is an Associate Clinical Professor of Law at Cardozo Law School; Co-Founder at OpenLaw, The LAO, FlamingoDAO.You can find him on Twitter @awrigh01If you like this show, please consider subscribing, leaving a review or sharing this podcast on social media. __ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter @evanepsteinLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack https://evanepstein.substack.com/Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License

Zack Gall and Chris Barnes discuss the bombshell news of an EOS Foundation being led by Yves La Rose with the endorsement of Dan Larimer. ---- With the backing and support from Daniel Larimer, the creator and architect of EOSIO, Yves La Rose, former CEO of EOS Nation, is formally requesting that the EOS block producers increase network inflation by 2% to fund an EOS Foundation which will lead the vision and roadmap for the EOS blockchain. The Foundation is also requesting to use legacy network fees to initially bootstrap this initiative. Daniel has been advising Yves on his plans to launch the Foundation and recommends him to serve as its executive director and chief ambassador to EOS. The Foundation's core mission is to provide grants, sponsorships, and key infrastructure support that has been lacking in EOS. Using a more centralized business approach, The Foundation will be able to efficiently deliver on its mission due to its ability to make decisions quickly while being able to pivot as needed to find product market fit. At its core, the Foundation will work to empower developers, businesses, and individuals to build on EOS. Providing funding to Eden on EOS will be one such initiative. The combination of an EOS Foundation and Eden working together in parallel will bestow EOS with both a centralized and decentralized system to provide it with both a top down and bottom up approach for funding the ecosystem growth, support, and marketing initiatives that EOS is currently lacking. It's basically the law that made the internet what it is today. Without it platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, Hacker News and others wouldn't be able to operate as they do. So of course, both the left and right want to destroy it.One bipartisan attempt to reform the law is called the "See Something Say Something Online” Act, which is a really scary piece of legislation that would put the DOJ in charge of filtering internet content, and allow everyone to file a “suspicious activity report” against any website. This would not only be weaponized against those with views others don't like, but it would also create a mountain of bureaucracy on the internet, and essentially eliminate free speech. In this week's interview I chatted to Dan Notestein, a lead dev for Hive. Dan goes all the way back to Bitshares days with Dan Larimer – Notestein was employee number 2 in the early days of Delegated Proof of Stake with BitShares, it was just Dan Larimer and Dan Notestein in the beginning. He also helped bring together the team that launched Hive. In this interview we dive into the history of Steem, the original chain that Hive forked from. We go into the Steemit inc ninja-mined stake right at the beginning that slowly broke the trust of a lot of the steem community. We talk about the controversy that surrounded the formation of Hive, and the battle with Justin Sun over the top witness spots. And we go into how the Hive tech works – how the distribution of funds to content creators works, the difference between the hive coin, hive power and hive dollar, Hive’s graphene-based blockchain framework and how it differs from other frameworks, and the dApps based on the blockchain. Dan Notestein is a super interesting guy and was happy to share stories of one of the year’s most contentious forks from his perspective of being right in the middle. I was grateful for unique insight and I learnt a lot about the untold history of Hive. Bitcoin, Blockchain, and the Technologies of Our Future

What is HIVE? A fork of the Steem blockchain, and probably the most contentious hardfork of 2020. In February 2020 Steemit Inc was purchased by Tron and along with it came 30% of the supply of Steem. Many in the community felt the acquisition and this large fund threatened decentralization, and in March, after a battle to control the top 20 witnesses, the network forked and Hive was born. Paul Puey (Edge CEO) and I dive into the history, tech, & what's next for Hive. We also put our money where our mouths are: we each decide whether to invest $100. This is not investment advice, we're just giving you a peek into our own portfolios and how we make decisions for ourselves. Keep in mind, I'm more interested in the team, the tech, and whether it's a cool project than in short term gains. If you'd like a more in-depth look at Hive, this week I did a members-only interview with Hive dev, Dan Notestein. Dan helped bring together the team that launched Hive, and was employee number 2 all the way back to the early days of DPoS with BitShares -- it was just Dan Larimer and Dan Notestein in the beginning. We dive into the history of Steem, the controversy that surrounded the formation of Hive, and how the Hive tech works. Charles details how he structured Cardano "like a DARPA project" with a deep focus on R&D and why they're concentrating heavily on development in Africa. Thomas Cox is known as the Godfather of Blockchain governance and a well-known figure in the EOS ecosystem.  We discuss working for Dan Larimer of EOS and blockchain governance. As employee #3 at Block.one What’s working with Dan Larimer like? Why should anyone care about Blockchain governance? How do you respond to the allegations that the Chinese are dominating the block producers? What’s going on with REX and EOS.io? Can you set up a model that is truly decentralized? There are so many models, how do choose? What is the specific criteria for choosing a governance model? IN 100 words or less, if you could invest a fictional $100,000 in one or two cryptos, what would they be and why? I'd put $50k into Bitcoin and split the rest across a basket of alt coins and tokens like WAX and even Libra. Key Takeaway: When you set up a new blockchain, please pick a governance approach and don't be blindsided by the need for governance.  Where can they reach you? Strongblock.io

Universal Basic Income is becoming a hot topic again. Is it a good idea? Why are a number of libertarians in the US jumping on board the UBI train? What about Daniel Larimer’s Universal Resource Inheritance, proposed for EOS? And does Bitcoin already exhibit characteristics of UBI, thanks to its deflationary nature? Join me as we explore this and more. As always on Bitgenstein’s Table, we’re trying to think more deeply about the future we want to build. *** Next time is a special guest episode in cooperation with the Everything EOS podcast. We’ll be discussing UBI and URI as they relate to cryptocurrency, direct from the EOS Hackathon in San Francisco. The articles I mention by Dan Larimer are available at https://medium.com/@bytemaster See other links, including the video and article by Mark Cuban and more, at https://bitgenste.in/UBI *** Original theme song, as usual, by Joseph Dickinson (audiojungle.net/user/jdmusic). A few piano songs by me include a little-known Intermezzo by Poulenc and a couple of pieces by Ravel. Then there’s a mechanical-sounding song that we won’t talk about. Finally, the traditional Asian music near the end is used by permission. I wish I knew how to play those instruments. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bitgenstein/support

Kyle Samani, managing partner of Multicoin Capital, talks about what got him really excited at this week's Zcon0 conference for Zcash -- primarily, technologies that could make possible a future of massively scalable blockchains featuring default private transactions that would still make possible selective viewing to, say, auditors. He also recaps the major incidents around EOS's launch and how the community plans to change its governance, by trying out a new ethos of "intent of code" is law. We also discuss whether or not it's even possible to enforce that and how EOS's governance system compares to the one in Bitcoin. Finally, we also touch on some of the news around VCs investing in crypto, starting with some of the biggest news this week -- Kathryn Haun's appointment as the new GP of Andreessen Horowitz, where she will be co-managing its new crypto fund -- and the various strategies that VC firms are using to invest in crypto. Exploring EOS |Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, Decentralization, Crypto

A lot of people are saying that EOS is a scam. After just a short time in comment sections or twitter you will quickly come across this claim. And if you trust random people on the internet then you might actually start believing in it. It's really easy to focus on negative news or comments because that's just how our brains are wired. I've seen this claim so much lately that I thought I'd address it here. In this podcast I want to go through the lazy man's guide to discerning whether or not EOS is a scam. Let's start with Dan Larimer, the Chief Technology Officer of Block. One, the company that is building EOS. He is largely seen as the brains behind this project and the inventor of the technology. He previously built bitshares which was the first decentralized exchange back in 2014. On bitshares he created the first stable coin called bitUSD. Many people don't know much about these projects. They were very successful in the technical realm but seem to have been overlooked in the cryptomania of the last year. Next he built Steemit which is a blockchain based social network that works sort of like reddit. However the users get paid for creating and curating content. This platform has nearly a million users and has an alexa rank of 1,335 which is pretty big. How likely do you really think it is that someone who created two successful blockchain projects that were certainly not scams just woke up one day and said to himself now it's time to ruin my reputation and legacy and create a scam even though I'm already a multimillionaire from my previous projects. Seems unlikely to me. Aristotle said that the appeal to authority is one of the weakest arguments. (See what I did there?) but nonetheless let's talk about other people and organizations that support EOS because many of these are putting themselves at great financial risk to support EOS. ICO Alert is a very successful ICO rating website. Not only do they like EOS but the founder of ICO Alert, Rob Finch, started another company to become a Block Producer and they did a miniseries on their main ICO Alert Podcast called 'Everything EOS' where they talk about how great EOS is. Next is Weiss ratings. This is a financial ratings company that recently got into rating crypto. They rated EOS in the top 7 of all cryptos and recently tweeted about how they thought EOS would 'Eat Ethereum's lunch' #EOS (B) vs. #Ethereum (B-). At MainNet launch, EOS will process 600 transactions per second and then speed to thousands. Ethereum can only do 10. How long before EOS eats Ethereum’s lunch? #bitcoin #crypto #cryptocurrency #btc #eth #altcoin #altcoins — Weiss Ratings (@WeissRatings) May 30, 2018 Bancor is a blockchain project that is basically a decentralized exchange. They are planning to be a block producer on EOS and not only that but they are integrating the bancor protocol into EOS. Bitfinex is one of biggest crypto exchanges. They announced that they plan to be a block producer and they plan to build a decentralized exchange as a dapp on EOS. Huobi is another large crypto exchange that wants to be a block producer. AntPool, a massive bitcoin mining pool. Let me said that again a massive BITCOIN mining pool is also hoping to become an EOS block producer. Not to mention Everipedia, Ono and other dapps being built or migrated. So there we have ratings organizations and other crypto companies all supporting EOS. But maybe they've all been fooled and Dan Larimer is really just very persuasive and convinced them all of his scam? Well... let's continue with investors. There have been several multimillion dollar venture captial funds popping up that are committed to just investing in EOS-related projects. Yes, hundreds of millions in VC funding for EOS. Not crypto in general, but just focused on EOS! That's just a mania, you might say, these people probably are just dumb money getting tricked by the cheap scam that is EOS. Well... Let's see who these people are.

Today’s guest is David Packham, co-founder of EOS42, a block producer candidate based in London. He and his team are currently building an EOS delegation market to facilitate EOS-based token leasing in hopes of building trust and earning the votes required to become an EOS block producer. If you aren’t sure what that means, this episode is for you. EOS is a “generation 3 blockchain” which is set to launch in early June 2018. It’s creator, Dan Larimer (@bytemaster7), has previously built two other successful blockchain projects, Bitshares and Steem, both which use the Delegated Proof of Stake blockchain technology. If you are unfamiliar with EOS, here’s a fairly good article detailing various aspects of it https://blockonomi.com/eos-guide/ and here are the EOS.IO FAQ’s https://eos.io/faq.html. I also recommend checking out EOS Go for the latest news and telegram summaries from the various EOS groups online: https://busy.org/@eosgo Much of this discussion focuses on many aspects of EOS as a token, a blockchain and a community. From how inflation is used, to the resource mechanics of the EOS token, a little EOS vs ETH and detailing the unique governance system in place to help settle disputes rather than relying on hard forks. Although we get a bit technical and philosophical at times, I believe this conversation will appeal to both the casual and advanced crypto listener. David and I chat briefly about his background in finance to how he found cryptocurrencies and why he’s dedicating his time to the EOS community and hopefully become a block producer. If you don’t know what a block producer is, don’t worry and tune in. We wrap up by discussing the Chintai, the EOS42 Teams token delegation project which allows for dApp teams to essential lease tokens to gain access to the EOS resource pool (bandwidth and storage) so that they can satisfy the requirements of their applications. Leasing would be done in lieu of actually purchasing the EOS tokens. Why would this market exist and what are the incentives? We discuss and answer these questions and much more. Amidst the discussion of these exciting prospective plans, he is careful to note the following: “The first rule…is to do no harm to BitShares, and after we have established that as a ground rule, what can we do to add new traffic, new users and new features to BitShares without undoing what it has become?” Tune in to hear an in-depth answer to that question and many more.

Its technology enables the network to operate more flexibly and efficiently than any other consensus model out there. It is only a matter of time until all cryptos are forced to move to this type of network, and that is why we must focus our attention to coins that are built on top of the DPOS model. $295 A Day Mining Steem?

How do the top 20 Steem witnesses each earn $295 a day building the blockchain in a process we usually say is mining? Would you watch this video to see who is earning $295 a day witnessing the Steem blockchain creation because seeing how easy becoming a miner for Steem is inspired me to become a witness? First, the terms mining and witness are confusing with Steem because originally one proof of work miner was included along with 20 witnesses whose Ubuntu Linux servers process all the transactions and create the new Steem blockchain every 63 seconds under the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) which is the fastest, most efficient, most decentralized, and most flexible consensus model available first demonstrated in BitShares. This concept was invented by Dan Larimer who is currently working on EOS after starting BitShares and Steem. The top 20 witnesses earn Steem Power every day which can easily be withdrawn to STEEM every 7 days and/or used to upvote posts to earn author or curation rewards. While I used $295 a day as the baseline based on the exact pay received, the top 20 witnesses for Steem generally earn much more than this by posting and upvoting with their own Steem Power. The amazing fact is that $295 represents the current Steem price. If the price goes up double, every witness makes double. When it goes up 10 times, every top witness will instantly be making thousands per day instead of hundreds! At ranking 61, I currently am making about $15 a day. If you are already on Steem, would you please vote for me as a witness at https://steemit.com/~witnesses because you might feel good about helping my witness get up higher? Austrian economics is one of these impenetrable black boxes that you hear referenced occasionally but that has little meaning for many people. Recently I was perusing Cameron Harwick's blog, Thrica where I periodically go to soak up some free market goodness, and I found myself re-reading a post entitled Hayek vs. Rothbard on Free-Market Money. The article and the comments illucidate many interesting and relevant ideas that can not only help us understand cryptocurrency but also show that the problem of discovering what is a good kind of money has been mulled over by brilliant people long before the cypherpunks sunk their teeth into it. A clearly novel approach has been taken by the team working on Bitshares. I asked Dan Larimer to explane the roots of his idea and update us on the progress of the platform.
