Say the magic words, skip accountability—Evangelicalism's cruelest trick exposed. This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this powerful Creation's Paths episode, Charlie and Brian take aim at Evangelical Christian Nationalism, exposing it as “the cruelest prank of all time.” With sharp wit and deep theological insight, they trace the roots of Evangelicalism through the Great Awakenings, Jonathan Edwards' hellfire sermons, and the rise of —the doctrine of "just saying the right words" to be saved. They explore how Evangelicalism diverged from traditional orthodoxy and orthopraxy, replacing lived values and beliefs with emotional experiences and “magic prayer formulas.” The duo unpack how this theological shift enabled the rise of hypocrisy, spiritual abuse, and political manipulation, leading to today's dangerous wave of Christian nationalism.Drawing from lived experience as former evangelicals and current Christopagan Druids, they offer a scathing but hopeful critique and share resources like The New Evangelicals and Tim & April Show to help listeners disentangle from toxic theology. This episode is both a heartfelt plea and a wake-up call for those inside and outside the movement. Thanks for reading! While recently attending the 50th and final Winter Carnival of Magic in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, we chatted with Tiffany Sauvage (née Allen) who is 1) performing as Princess Tiffany at princess parties for children, 2) married to Boris Wild, 3) the first woman to join “Sleight Club” in North Carolina, 4) has a passion for seances, bizarre magic and horror films, and 5) performs as and lectures on the Georgia Magnet/Wonder. And she is only 34 years old! What a career so far and what potential she has for a great future. She is keeping magic history alive as she passes on the wonders that were the Georgia Wonder. We finish talking with a trio of officers from The Magic Circle (TMC) this week as we sit for a chat with the current President of TMC, Marvin Berglas. Not defined by being the son of the legendary “International Man of Mystery,” David Berglas, Marvin decided early to go his own way. Nealy four decades ago Marvin founded “Marvin's Magic” which created magic kits that swept the globe The results are that he received the Gold Medal as winner of Toy of the Year in the electronic games category of the Independent Toy Awards and was awarded the coveted Outstanding Contribution Award in the British Toy and Hobby Industry in 2015/16. And as far as magic goes, he received the Outstanding Contribution to Magic award from the British Magical Society in 2014/15. And n 2016 Marvin was awarded The Maskelyne Award from The Magic Circle for services to magic. During 2017, 2018 and 2019 Marvin was the Vice-President of The Magic Circle and in 2023 was elected President of The Magic Circle. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize This week Marvin tells us about his magic kit empire and how the business grew to international proportions. And although he came from a home where magic was talked about all the time, he tells us that he did not care to pursue a career like his father until later in life as Marvin's Magic developed. He then got involved with The Magic Circle (TMC) and became one of the very few father/son Presidents of TMC. Find out in this episode who the others were. Merry Clambake! The entire TCBCast gang is joined by Rabia and Felix from Suddenly: A Frank Sinatra Podcast, Jamie and John from EAP Society, Kristen, Benita and Margarita from Those Elvis Girls, David "Ghosty" Wills from We Say Yeah: A Cliff Richard Podcast, Garrett Cash from "The Beat! With Garrett Cash", and Darin Evans, all in a manner never quite heard before - a non-linear episode intercut across four different discussions! The TCBCast Gang tackles the movie head on, giving Gurdip, Ryan and Bec (who missed most of the last two Christmases) the chance to voice all their questions about what makes this low-rated Elvis movie so eminently watchable... and also confusing. Meanwhile, Olivia brings her own deep dives. Oh, and most of them are drinking.  The Suddenly Crew took an experimental approach this year, watching the film "Bake to Front," starting their viewing at the halfway point of the film and working their way back around to the infamous "Clambake" musical sequence as an unintended finale. Those Elvis Girls discuss what makes Elvis' films fun to watch, what it's like to view his film career while being relatively new to the fandom, and call for #JusticeForClambake! And a gathering of film buffs get together to explore the year 1967 in film: what the big hits and notable releases were, and how Elvis' film career slots into the overall picture between the fading old Hollywood studio system and the more experimental and independent New Hollywood. Most fun of all, there's an exploration of some of the movies that Elvis Presley himself is known to have watched in 1967. There's a few surprises in store throughout as well! As of this episode's release date, "Clambake" can be watched freely (with ads) on TubiTV and Pluto TV in the United States and may be available on a streaming platform in your region as well. Words are so powerful. Even years later, you can recall something someone said (to or about you) because of the way it elevated or devastated you. We don't often think before we speak (and sometimes even less before we type, text or post). But our words have the potential to bless and/or curse, heal and/or hurt, bring life or even death. Words, to a large degree, determine destiny. And according to research, some have an even bigger impact than others.  What if, when your kindergarten teacher told you to, “Say the magic words!”, she was onto something so vital to and for us? And if so, what words, if understood fully and incorporated regularly, might have the ability to change for the better our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the world at large? Over the next several weeks we will be talking about the magic words…Please, Sorry & Thanks.

Few things are as annoying as entitlement; acting as if you're owed certain things or are unaware of all the effort that went into getting you what you got. Ever done something for someone who was ungrateful for your effort? Ever given your best to something you didn't have to do at all, and someone still complained about it. Ever give a little, only to have someone reject it and demand even more. These moments boil our blood. But you've done things like this to other people, maybe even without knowing it. In a world that's always telling us to reach for more, it's hard to be grateful for what you've got. How can we get better at acknowledging and being thankful for everything we have and everything that's been done for us? And how might being this way change the way we relate to everyone? We all know people who never seem to apologize for anything, and others who apologize for practically everything. Nobody likes those who can't admit they're wrong. It's easy to see them as self-absorbed, arrogant, excuse makers. At the same time, we can't always tell when we're wrong. We're not always aware of how the things we do impact and affect other people. How do we learn to see our actions through other people's eyes? How do we know what to apologize for and when? Would leaning into “sorry” make us better or just weaker? Pretty much every kid is told to say, “Please.” But it may have been a while since you've heard an adult say it. In our culture, we tend to think of polite people as pushovers. We like stories about confident, charismatic figures who know what they want, demand what they need, and don't take crap from anybody. Maybe that's what comes to mind when you think of a strong leader. But it's not even close to the picture the Bible paints. Which makes sense if you've ever been pushed around by someone with a little bit of power. Is it possible to be successful in our world, have healthy relationships, and be people of “please”?
