Changing Higher Ed
Transforming College Advising: A New Approach to Student Success

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 42:22

Higher education institutions continue to struggle with student retention, career readiness, and underemployment among graduates. Traditional college advising models focus heavily on selecting a major, yet many students graduate with empty degrees that fail to translate into meaningful careers. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Scott Carlson and Dr. Ned Scott Laff, authors of Hacking College: Why the Major Really Doesn't Matter and What Really Does, about how institutions can rethink academic advising, faculty engagement, and student success strategies to better serve today's learners. Carlson, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Laff, who has over 35 years of experience in college and university settings helping students design successful undergraduate experiences, discuss how universities can shift away from a rigid, major-centric model to a personalized student success framework. They explain how students who lack career clarity often end up in underemployment, taking jobs unrelated to their degrees. Their research shows that institutions must evolve their advising structures to help students identify vocational purpose, leverage experiential learning, and navigate the hidden job market. The Problem with Traditional Academic Advising The outdated focus on major selection leads students into rigid career paths, often misaligned with their strengths and interests. A one-size-fits-all advising model leaves first-generation and low-income students struggling to navigate the complexities of higher education. Limited faculty-student engagement prevents students from leveraging university resources and professional networks. Lack of career-aligned experiential learning results in students graduating without the necessary skills and industry connections. Revolutionizing College-to-Career Transition Carlson and Laff propose a new model where higher education leaders integrate career-focused advising and faculty mentorship into the student experience. This involves: Helping students explore hidden intellectualism—their deeper interests and skills that could shape their career trajectories. Connecting students with faculty and industry professionals to uncover career pathways beyond traditional job titles. Expanding experiential learning opportunities through internships, mentorships, and project-based learning. Teaching students to research the hidden job market to discover roles they might never encounter through a standard career fair. Institutional Strategies for Student Success For university presidents, boards, and executive leaders, improving student outcomes requires a fundamental shift in how advising and faculty engagement are structured. Institutions should: Encourage faculty to act as mentors, guiding students beyond coursework to explore real-world career applications. Train advisors to support students in creating flexible, goal-oriented academic plans that integrate experiential learning. Strengthen career services by building industry partnerships and embedding career readiness into academic programming. Utilize existing institutional resources—including government affairs, research opportunities, and alumni networks—to connect students with career pathways. The Hidden Job Market and Career Readiness Career exploration should begin early in a student's academic journey. Institutions must help students develop the ability to recognize opportunities beyond traditional job titles by: Encouraging proactive networking with faculty, professionals, and industry leaders. Teaching students to research and navigate the hidden job market, where many opportunities exist outside of standard recruitment channels. Expanding experiential learning options, such as internships and project-based coursework, to provide practical experience that aligns with evolving workforce demands. With AI-driven automation threatening traditional advising roles, institutions must act now to redefine how they support student career pathways. Colleges that fail to adapt will continue to see declining retention, underemployment, and dissatisfaction among graduates. Five Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Be Open to Change – Institutions must actively remove barriers that prevent student success. The current advising model is failing many students, and colleges need to adopt a more flexible, student-centered approach that helps learners navigate their academic and career paths effectively. Preserve Academic Variety – Colleges are eliminating liberal arts programs due to financial pressures, but this limits students' ability to create multidisciplinary educational experiences. Institutions should strive to maintain a diverse academic landscape that allows students to explore various career pathways. Engage Directly with Students – University leaders should make an effort to understand student concerns firsthand. By informally engaging with students—whether in common areas or casual settings—presidents and board members can gain valuable insights into what students need to thrive. Empower Students to Take Ownership of Their Education – Instead of following rigid degree structures, students should be encouraged to design their own academic experiences by integrating coursework, experiential learning, and industry engagement in ways that align with their career goals. Advisors and faculty should support this by shifting from a prescriptive model to one that helps students think critically about their education. Rethink Institutional Priorities – Colleges can maintain their research and tenure agendas while also fostering a culture that encourages student success. Leaders should create systems that help students perceive higher education as an interconnected network of opportunities rather than a series of disconnected courses. Higher education institutions that fail to evolve will continue to see declining retention and job placement rates. Listen in as Dr. Drumm McNaughton, Scott Carlson, and Dr. Ned Laff explore how colleges can implement meaningful advising reforms to improve student success, institutional sustainability, and long-term career outcomes. Institutions looking for solutions to align their academic programs with evolving student needs should explore Academic Realignment and Redesign strategies. Well I Know Now with Pippa Kelly

In her native America, Lori La Bey has been recognised for her tireless work to improve the lives of those with dementia through creating, discovering and making accessible a wide range of resources. She has been hailed as a Health Hero by none other than Oprah Winfrey and championed as an Architect for Change by the former First Lady of California, Maria Shriver.Since walking away from a successful career in real estate in 2009, Lori has launched America's first radio station dedicated to dementia – indeed, Alzheimer's Speaks is believed to be the first dementia radio station in the world. Global first or not, Alzheimer's Speaks gives a voice to everyone, allowing people and companies from throughout the world to share their business and educational resources, products and advice. While a Dementia Map provides a worldwide directory of blogs, relevant enterprises and events to which individuals and companies can sign up to make their offerings available to a wider public. Lori was instrumental in creating America's first dementia friendly community in Watertown, Wisconsin in 2013, three years later she launched one of the country's first memory cafés in Roseville, Minnesota. Her webinar series, Dementia Chats, sees the real experts – those living with the condition – offering their invaluable advice. Recently, her children's book, Betty the Bald Chicken, co-authored with Scott Carlson, was published. As with all Lori's dementia work, the book is inspired by her mother's 30 year struggle with Alzheimer's and her own caring role. But it's not limited to dementia, Betty's story applies to virtually any situation in which someone finds themselves on the outside, struggling to fit in and not being understood. It teaches people of all ages that we have much more in common than sets us apart.“We need to shift how we care for one another and ourselves from crisis to comfort,” Lori told Maria Shriver. “We need to give hope and support to families and professionals alike, through open conversations, shared life stories and lessons learnt. Dementia is not a disease of one but of society”. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Libraries reexamine their role in communities through pandemic

Like many other public spaces, libraries were forced to restrict public access during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, librarians shifted how they offer their services and what services they offer. They moved programs online and offered curbside pick-ups. They helped provide resources to people who were homeless, and provided valuable information about pandemic safety to the public. Many libraries have since reopened, but their role in their communities continues to evolve.  In addition to pandemic-related changes, digital technologies are also changing libraries, forcing them to reimagine what services they need to offer. And some libraries are facing staffing shortages.  MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with two Minnesota library leaders and an education writer about the changes they've seen and what they think Minnesota's libraries might look like in the future. Guests:  Karen Lemke is the Library Director at the Rochester Public Library. Pang Yang is the deputy director at Ramsey County Libraries. Scott Carlson is a senior writer at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He recently wrote a report on academic libraries called “The Library of the Future.”  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS. Hear their conversation using the audio player above and read the highlights below. “One service that libraries provided pre-internet was that they were a kind of filter on fake news,” Scott Carlson said. “The role of the librarian to sort of designate what is a valid piece of information and what is not really has grown.” He added that librarians are struggling with budget constraints as they work to serve students, academia and their communities. A listener, Andrew, called in to share his memories of growing up in North Dakota and visiting the library just a few blocks away from his grade school. In the children's section, he said, “there was a bathtub lined with pillows and painted with an octopus. So, you could go and sit in the bathtub and read your books.” He said that at 47, he could still tell you where to find the library's copy of “The Boxcar Children.” Todd called in to share his appreciation for how well libraries have served his kids. “Some of the Hennepin County libraries have little rotating spaces that let them pretend to be, you know, post office workers or bakers, and they love browsing the shelves and seeing books,” he said. “I get to follow their enthusiasm, which is a wonderful thing for parents to do.” At the Rochester Public Library, director Karen Lemke said the pandemic demonstrated that “when individuals don't have a home, and there is a stay-at-home order, there's an issue.” She said that in 2020 they worked with Olmsted County, the Housing and Redevelopment Authority, city teammates, community organizations and volunteers to provide access to essentials like a bathroom and running water. Now, social workers can help visitors at the Rochester Public Library access services. “Not everyone is comfortable walking into a traditional government building,” Lemke said. “So, this is a really natural fit of meeting people where they feel comfortable.” At Ramsey County Libraries, deputy director Pang Yang spoke about librarians as “social-first responders.” Yang said during the pandemic, libraries fielded a range of calls – from needing help on a computer to concerns about a family member's mental health. “Part of it is making sure that we center staff, and we center the community,” she said. Yang said they provide staff training to use the resources they have, and that they partner with organizations and departments to address community members' more specialized needs. A listener, Melissa, called in from Sioux Falls. “My high school library probably, like, saved my life,” she said. “I had a really rough childhood. And I would disappear into books a lot.” Library staff took notice, and encouraged her to work with them as a librarian's aide. She shelved and repaired books. “That one simple course was the best experience I had through my high school entirely,” Melissa said. “We want to connect people to information because we do believe in the value of good, quality information, but sometimes the resource isn't information,” Lemke said. “It really is about helping people and being here for our community.” Yang added that during the pandemic, Ramsey libraries worked with the county to provide laptops and internet hotspots for people without access at home. They will keep working to provide internet services for community members who need it.

In this latest IngenioUs blog article, David Staley, Ph.D. suggests another way forward for smaller colleges and universities. Citing a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article by Scott Carlson, Staley suggests that small colleges might ensure their future through a de-scaled strategy that offers an educational experience at human scale.

The voice of trucker Scott Carlson dominates this week's edition of the Overdrive Radio podcast, detailing a little piece of equipment he's got in his truck, as do the rest of the trucks in the fleet he's driven for for 17 years out of New York state. This little device, he knows, likely saved his life last week. The equipment? A simple carbon monoxide detector. An exhaust leak from his diesel-powered APU happened to have broken in the exact wrong spot, just below a vent for fresh cab air. Fortunately for him, the fleet's trucks had been outfitted years earlier with detectors (Safe-T-Alert by RV-centric manufacturer MTI Industries) hardwired for power from the trucks' batteries and mounted low on the sleeper wall down near where Carlson lays his head when asleep -- recommended for these kinds of applications. The company's fleetwide investment in the units followed a leased owner-operator]s similar situation, though caused by a leak in the truck's primary exhaust system, that sent him to a four-day hospital stay. The consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning can be much worse than that.

Solutions for Higher Education with Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt

Featured Quote: "The business side of higher education is really a neglected part of higher education for the most part. In part, because higher education is just such a complicated structure in the first place. I mean, with money coming from all sorts of areas and all sorts of forms—tuition and grants and public funding and payoffs from the endowment and so on—so, it’s difficult to follow all that. And on top of that, higher education is just a very fractured environment anyway, very siloed and very big. A lot of institutions are huge. So, to try to get a handle on that, it’s difficult for a leader to try to turn the boat, so to speak. But, knowing where you are, knowing where you stand is absolutely vital. Absolutely the first step." Full Transcript Article: Enough 'Do More With Less.' It’s Time for Colleges to Find Actual Efficiencies.
