This is a Best of Bad Crypto Podcast replay while Sir Lord Travis and Sir Lord Joel are on vacation. We harken back to Episode #067, which originally aired on January 3, 2018 with guest Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple. The price of Ripple at that time was around $0.80 to $0.90; now is it around $0.30. Right now in 2022, there is an SEC case against Ripple. We are interested in seeing the outcome of the SEC case and its impact on the cryptocurrency industry and its adoption. More than three billion people are now connected online. But the payment infrastructure is still stuck in the 20th century. The people at Ripple hope to change that by creating the world's only enterprise system for global payments. And today, we welcome the CEO of Ripple.com, Brad Garlinghouse to the program. It's a fascinating discussion about all things blockchain, as well as XRP, the cryptocurrency which has seen a rapid rise over the past month. Let's dig in with the token that holds the #4 spot in crypto market cap by getting answers directly from the top.  It's episode #67 of The Bad Crypto Podcast. FULL SHOW NOTES: http://badco.in/067We also interviewed Ripple CTO David Schwartz in Episode #538 if you want more Ripple coverage. badco.in/538TIME STAMPS: 00:00 - Intro05:00 - The show has passed 1 million downloads (by episode #067; pretty decent!)07:00 - Bad Crypto Inbox and Mail 07:05 - How do I keep my crypto in cold storage safe from fire, natural disaster, theft, etc.? 10:00 - I bought Bitcoin for Christmas presents, and now I don't want to give it up. What is your favorite Jayhawk moment? 15:50 - Ripple has a more centralized nature to it than other cryptocurrencies. What was the thought 18:30 - Roger Ver just Tweeted something where he quoted Milton Freedman who said, “you should want more insider trading, not less” and tweeted at Bob Murphy Econ who said there shouldn't even be an SEC. The context being what just happened recently with Bitcoin Cash being sprung onto Coinbase. What are your thoughts on that? 19:50 - Let's set a foundation here, just in case people don't know what Ripple is. Can you explain what Ripple and XRP are, what does it do, and why does it have value? 22:05 - I've traded with alot of cryptos, and I notice that Ripple and Stellar Lumens and BitShares are smoking fast with their transactions. The payments are so quick, and with some of the other blockchains their transaction speeds are not fast. Why is Ripple so fast when you come with these global payments? 25:02 - Ripple has had an interesting ride the last couple of weeks, around 0.25 per token. The circulation on them is approaching 39 bln, but the total supply is closer to 100 bln. What is with the 55 bln in lock-up, in escrow? 27:13 - Is that supply schedule public somewhere, because that would answer a lot of questions. 28:00 - The coin, XRP, is that intended for day-to-day use by individuals to hold and trade, retail payments, or was it designed solely as a system to facilitate long distance fiat transfers for banks? 30:00 - One of our earliest episodes, we interviewed Jedd McCaleb (an early founder of Ripple). Jedd was covering Stellar Lumens, which just announced a really big deal with IBM and people want to know when we are going to get the household name announcement from Ripple? 32:11 - The value of XRP, how does it impact the Ripple protocol? Does the higher price of XRP reflect higher adoption or utilization? As Ripple increases in value, are those transaction costs going to increase like they did with Bitcoin? 34:15 - No one has a crystal ball, but you get to speak with banks around the world. When do you see a complete flippening happening from fiat to crypto with mass adoption? 36:30 - There are a lot of different banks in the world; do you see Wells Fargo, for example, making their own cryptos using the Ripple protocol, or do you see XRP being the coin used? 37:57 - Would you follow the same premise with countries creating their own cryptocurrencies? 38:52 - Speaking of yen, there is rumor Ripple is being used between Korean and Japanese banks. Is that just rumor or truth? 39:35 - Three part question, but not even a statement, the question is inherent. The word is: Coinbase. 40:11 - From a Bad Crypto Podcast Facebook Group member: Have you tried or do you like Cheddar Bacon Mac N Cheese Lays potato chips? 40:27 - Is it a goal of the company to replace SWIFT as a payment mechanism? 41:55 - There are some really cool tokens that are popping up, but it is very slow for them to get on the cryptocurrency exchanges. What are your experiences with getting listed on some of these changes and what are some of the costs associated with being listed? 43:41 - Do you see the Fed eventually coming out with a coin or making certain crypto illegal to hold here in the United States? 45:00 - With the value of the dollar falling, the real ponzi scheme some would say is fiat money. 46:28 - Bitcoin was originally going to be the panacea for all digital assets. In this week's interview I chatted to Dan Notestein, a lead dev for Hive. Dan goes all the way back to Bitshares days with Dan Larimer – Notestein was employee number 2 in the early days of Delegated Proof of Stake with BitShares, it was just Dan Larimer and Dan Notestein in the beginning. He also helped bring together the team that launched Hive. In this interview we dive into the history of Steem, the original chain that Hive forked from. We go into the Steemit inc ninja-mined stake right at the beginning that slowly broke the trust of a lot of the steem community. We talk about the controversy that surrounded the formation of Hive, and the battle with Justin Sun over the top witness spots. And we go into how the Hive tech works – how the distribution of funds to content creators works, the difference between the hive coin, hive power and hive dollar, Hive’s graphene-based blockchain framework and how it differs from other frameworks, and the dApps based on the blockchain. Dan Notestein is a super interesting guy and was happy to share stories of one of the year’s most contentious forks from his perspective of being right in the middle. I was grateful for unique insight and I learnt a lot about the untold history of Hive. Bitcoin, Blockchain, and the Technologies of Our Future

What is HIVE? A fork of the Steem blockchain, and probably the most contentious hardfork of 2020. In February 2020 Steemit Inc was purchased by Tron and along with it came 30% of the supply of Steem. Many in the community felt the acquisition and this large fund threatened decentralization, and in March, after a battle to control the top 20 witnesses, the network forked and Hive was born. Paul Puey (Edge CEO) and I dive into the history, tech, & what's next for Hive. We also put our money where our mouths are: we each decide whether to invest $100. This is not investment advice, we're just giving you a peek into our own portfolios and how we make decisions for ourselves. Keep in mind, I'm more interested in the team, the tech, and whether it's a cool project than in short term gains. If you'd like a more in-depth look at Hive, this week I did a members-only interview with Hive dev, Dan Notestein. Dan helped bring together the team that launched Hive, and was employee number 2 all the way back to the early days of DPoS with BitShares -- it was just Dan Larimer and Dan Notestein in the beginning. We dive into the history of Steem, the controversy that surrounded the formation of Hive, and how the Hive tech works. What is Graphene? What is BitShares? And what else has been built on this framework? This episode is a bit of an open long form chat and deep dive with BitShares regular Michael Taggart. This is the 1st of 2 parts for this episode. Michael Taggart, co-founder of BEOS and Quintric Michael is a long time BitShares supporter and recently helped co-found an EOS clone to act as a middle-chain between BitShares and EOS networks and tokens. "BEOS Limited Cooperative Association (BLCA) is the world's first Non-Profit Cooperative Blockchain. Designed as a middle chain, BEOS Blockchain allows interoperability between EOS/BEOS/BitShares based tokens. BEOS is a new privately funded blockchain, a straight clone of EOS intended to serve as a middle chain between BitShares and the EOS main chain. Its goals are token portability and jurisdictional agility. It does these functions without requiring any modifications to or cooperation from either BitShares or EOS communities, neither of which are involved in its development. BEOS tokens serve the same functions as the EOS token on the EOS main chain - giving holders voting and access privileges to network resources. BEOS seeks to develop a new kind of censorship resistance by designing the blockchain to be "intra-jurisdictional" (confined to one jurisdiction) and ultimately "jurisdictionally agile" (able to control which operations take place in explicitly designated jurisdictions). If token portability and jurisdictional agility are what you are looking for, then BEOS is the best alternative to the EOS blockchain." During this episode, you will learn: How Michael got started in Bitcoin buyer around 2012 How he become a liason between the business and technical side of companies A review of BitShares and what's happened to date How BEOS bridges BitShares and EOS as a middle chain Why it will leverage the "$3 Billion R&D Department" that is EOS to benefit BitShares How they are moving toward a trust-less gateway and counterparty system What excites and scares him the most about Crypto For show notes and more visit: https://coinstructive.com/ep66-beos

Talking Crypto With Walt and David A New Year a New You Part 3

Real Money Talks

I recently held my A New Year A New You webinar which was designed to help you end 2018 right and set up 2019 for success. This is part 3 or the webinar where I talk to crypto and blockchain experts Walt and Dave. These guys have made a fortune developing their own cryptocurrency and investing in existing coins. They know everything about crypto from starting a coin, to investing, to all of the legal and compliance issues. They will be my expert advisor on an upcoming crypto series that we’re presenting. In this episode, we talk about everything crypto from how to get started, to the difference between digital currency and blockchain, and everything in between. You can find Loral here: Ask Loral Show Notes [01:03] In 1913, The Federal Reserve was founded to build a more stable and secure financial system. [01:49] By the 1970s, the US dollar was no longer backed by physical gold. [02:10] By printing money, the supply of the u.s. dollar is infinite, but the purchasing power goes down. [03:02] Walt is part of the Off Wall Street show. Walt is one of the first experts with a system on how to get your account right. [03:47] We are planning a six-week webinar with Walt and David. It's going to be heavy on content. We will help you set up your account and your wallet and make sure that it is secure. [04:09] You will learn in 6 weeks what it took Walt & David a decade to learn. [05:36] The challenge with learning about a massive new paradigm is time. It would take you years to learn to keep points that we are going to talk about. [06:12] I tracked cryptocurrency everyday. I wanted to go deeper and deeper to really understand it at the fundamental level, so that I could incorporate it into my own business. [06:20] We are going to cover the basics, and then we are going to talk how to build new things. [06:46] By the end of things we will even teach you how to tokenize your own business. [07:10] Our fast track information will save you over a year of research. [07:27] We have navigated through compliance and so much more. The cryptocurrency world is the future. [08:46] Different coins have different value just like different exchanges from all around the world. Digital currency will level the playing field. [09:23] It will level the playing field in the international exchange rate. [09:44] The digital market is tracked with the blockchain. Crypto can also alleviate exchange fees. [10:31] Blockchain is about efficiency and the removal of fraud. It also removes unnecessary middlemen. [11:36] Cryptocurrency is a new asset class. If you wanted to compare it to the stock market, you would have to go back to the first 10 years of the stock market. [12:04] There are optimal periods to move your assets in and out of crypto. It doesn't mirror the market or even real estate. [13:03] To get started dig into podcasts and start going to workshops and figure stuff out. [14:05] How do you vet a new coin? Look at the team and if the project is already built. Don't invest in a plan on a napkin. [15:13] Things are more structured now, and there is more regulation. There are also more projects that people can create with blockchain technology. [16:24] Our team will help you integrate your own tax system with lawyers and entities. [21:07] It's legal to own, buy and sell cryptocurrency. [21:39] It's also exciting to tokenize a business. [23:10] The clients are purely digital and stored in a software wallet that is secure. Physical coins are usually a novelty. [25:17] There is value to the coins. You trade crypto on exchanges. Bitshares is a decentralized exchange. [30:14] Behind the scenes, big players are trying to get their hands on bitcoin and want to control it. Right now, there is opportunity out there. [34:06] There are gambling sites built on EOS where you can get daily dividends based on revenue. [35:21] Once coins are mined out, and there is no more supply, they will continue to rise in value. You've seen their tables at libertarian conferences, and heard their radio ads warning of an immanent collapse of the financial system. Goldbugs, who stockpile precious metals, have been stereotyped as paranoid — occupying a fringe of the already-fringe liberty movement. Until recently, the only group further on the fringes than the goldbugs were the “crypto-anarchists”: radical libertarian computer geeks with theories about how to replace central banks and financial institutions with an unregulated online payments system and password-protected "cryptocurrency". Most of these digital cash schemes came to naught — frustrated by the complex problem of getting strangers to trust the validity of online transactions, and guarantee that the “money” — strings of 1s and 0s on a hard drive somewhere — is actually being transferred once, and only once, to another digital location. Bitcoin solved this problem with a decentralized, public ledger (aka, "blockchain"), recording all transfers of bitcoins in real time. A decade after its creation, the elegant protocol for money on the internet is now a topic of household discussion. Last year, Bitcoin appreciated nearly 20 fold, from $1,000 per Bitcoin in January 2017, to almost $20,000 by mid-December.If you're still in the dark about cryptocurrencies, tune in to our special hour-long primer with Stan Larimer. Bob and Stan will break down the basics of Bitcoin, as well as the Bitshares competitor, that Stan is helping to build on Bitcoin's foundations as an alternative blockchain-based financial system. Known as “The Godfather of BitShares,” Stan Larimer has forty years of experience in software, hardware, and systems engineering, program management, business development and even teaching rocket science at the US Air Force Academy. Stan is CEO of Cryptonomex, a leading custom blockchain development company.Does Bitcoin signal the end of money-printing and inflation by central banks as we know it? Furthermore, does it represent something larger and less predictable?

On tonight's episode of "The Crypto Show," We interview Stan Larimer and Dylan Howard of Bitshares, as they describe and explain the marvelous versatility, functionality, and success of their platform. We also discuss the charitable possibilities that BitShares offers as well. In the second hour, we interview frequent guest Lynn Ulbricht, mother of Ross Ulbricht, the alleged Dread Pirate Roberts of The Silk Road. She updates us on Ross's transfer to a Colorado maximum security prison, as well as on the prospects still for his potential release after losing his appeal. We delve into some of the more egregious aspects of his case concerning the government's corruption and violation of its own rules. We also discuss the upcoming event in Ross's honor at the Central Market north here in Austin on September 5th at 7pm, as well as the Nexus Conference in Aspen, Colorado, on September 21-23.
