This week, we're joined by the insanely talented and hilarious comedian/writer/producer Maggie Looke. She's so much fun... so we gave her a deeply depressing movie to watch.'Nancy' is a 2018 drama film directed by Christina Choe, starring Andrea Riseborough and featuring John Leguizamo and Steve Buschemi - a delicious character actor pair-up, we reckon. Neither John or Steve are ever in the same scene together in this film, but knowing that they are both there fills us with an electric joy. The movie tells the story of Nancy, a mysterious and sad woman who has made a habit of making up elaborate lies about her life - both online and with the few people she interacts with in her real life. One day, she sees a television interview with a couple whose child went missing over 30 years ago. Nancy takes it upon herself to tell this couple that she is their long lost daughter. John plays Jeb - a reader of Nancy's blog full of lies. He is in this film for two scenes, totalling about 4 minutes of screen time. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I’m back with my friend John McWhorter for one of our regular conversations. A lot has happened on the race and politics front over the last two weeks, so we’ve got a full docket of topics to discuss. And speaking of dockets, after overcoming some technical difficulties, we spend a good chunk of time on matters relating to the Supreme Court. Ilya Shapiro, the incoming director of Georgetown University’s Center for the Constitution, was put on leave by the school after tweeting criticism of Joe Biden for passing over his preferred candidate for the Supreme Court in favor of a “lesser black woman.” Shapiro refers to Biden’s promise to nominate a black woman to fill Justice Stephen Breyer’s seat on the Supreme Court when he retires later this year. Was Shapiro’s tweet racist? Neither John nor I think so, though it was poorly phrased. We go back and forth over the how much representation should play into the composition of the Supreme Court. We’re talking about an extremely elite institution with very few people on it, so I don’t think proportional representation is possible or necessarily even desirable, but it’s a complex matter. I say if Biden had simply nominated a black woman instead of announcing he was going to do so ahead of time, this wouldn’t even be an issue. How much do ordinary black people care about representation on the Supreme Court, anyway? The nomination of Clarence Thomas is an instructive case. We then move on to discuss Whoopi Goldberg’s unfortunate comment about race and the Holocaust. Was she mistaken to say that Nazi persecution of the Jews had nothing to do with race? Absolutely. Do John and I think she should be pilloried for saying it? No. It’s a case of ignorance, not antisemitism. She apologized, and she should be allowed to get on with her life and career. The Joe Rogan affair is next. A montage of the comic and podcast host using “the n-word” several times over the years went viral last week. John raises the point that he wasn’t directing the word at anybody, he was citing it. There’s a difference between hurling a racial slur at someone and uttering a racial slur in order to discuss it. The word itself should not be off limits for the purposes of discussion, and we both think that anyone who simply can’t bear to hear it in any context needs to grow up. As you can see, we take our role as “The Black Guys” seriously in this one. Let us know what you think! This post is free and available to the public. Hey, y'all - Joel here. Neither John nor I attend DePaul University. However, because Patrick is enrolled there, we both feel emotionally connected to the campus, even if only tangentially. We've held auditions at DePaul, seen performances, and made friends. For John and I, the Chicago trip was a novel time where we further cemented our bonds to various landmarks in our lives. Landmarks that likely no longer exist as we remember them.BEST CONSUMED THROUGH HEADPHONESFollow @3rdPersonPodwww.Patreon.com/3rdPersonPodwww.3rdPersonPod.com
Hey, y'all - Joel here. I've mentioned before that this podcast is in-part about finding the narrative in everyday experiences. Discovering the natural arcs that exist in both the mundanities and the eccentricities of our lives is fascinating to me. However, what I find even more interesting is that recording our experiences allows for actual literary devices to occur. In Entry 17 there's a moment where the listener will experience dramatic foreshadowing. If you listen closely during the segment in the restaurant, you can hear someone in the background mention the word "Coronavirus." This was in early February. Neither John nor I would hear of COVID-19 for several weeks. However, unbeknownst to us, the virus had already begun to wreak havoc on the world.I don't want to speak for everyone, but I find myself inclined to understand the world only as I experience it. I may consciously understand that there is great hardship happening throughout the world, but until I have some sort of personal involvement, it is difficult to internalize as a part of my understanding on a visceral level. Empathy is hard enough when presented with a direct emotional stimulus. Without one, it is near impossible. What I found interesting about the scene in the Korean grill, is that it's proof that the forces that I consider removed from my life are often just a few feet away. While it's unlikely that those people had been directly affected by the Coronavirus at that point in time, their personal involvement with it as an idea started much sooner than for me. We talk all the time in the podcast about the stories found in our own lives, but what about the stories of others that we never hear? Not only did all of those people in the restaurant go on and have their own story as it involves coronavirus, but they all have their own lives that will occur entirely separate from mine. Sure, we all have people whose lives we've chosen to intertwine with ours, but there are even more who just dip into our lives for a moment before they slip away.BEST CONSUMED THROUGH HEADPHONESFollow @3rdPersonPodwww.Patreon.com/3rdPersonPodwww.3rdPersonPod.com

Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 477All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. John of CapistranoOn Oct. 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the life of Saint John of Capistrano, a Franciscan priest whose life included a political career, extensive missionary journeys, efforts to reunite separated Eastern Christians with Rome and a historically important turn at military leadership.Invoked as a patron of military chaplains, St. John of Capistrano was praised by St. John Paul II in a 2002 general audience for his glorious evangelical witness, as a priest who gave himself with great generosity for the salvation of souls.Born in Italy during 1385, John lost his father a French or possibly German knight who had settled in Capistrano at a young age. Johns mother took care to have him educated, and after learning Latin he went to study both civil law and Church law in Perugia. An outstanding student, he soon became a prominent public figure and was appointed governor of the city at age 26.John showed high standards of integrity in his civic career, and in 1416 he labored to end a war that had erupted between Perugia and the prominent House of Malatesta. But when the nobles had John imprisoned, he began to question his lifes direction. Encountering Saint Francis of Assisi in a dream, he resolved to embrace poverty, chastity, and obedience with the Franciscans.Abandoning his possessions and social status, John joined the religious order in October 1416. He found a mentor in Saint Bernardine of Siena, known for his bold preaching and his method of prayer focused on the invocation of the name of Jesus. Taking after his teacher in these respects, John began preaching as a deacon in 1420, and was ordained a priest in 1425.John successfully defended his mentor from a charge of heresy made against his way of devotion, though he found less success in his efforts to resolve internal controversy among the followers of St. Francis. A succession of popes entrusted important matters to John, including the effort to reunite Eastern and Western Christendom at the Ecumenical Council of Florence.Drawing immense crowds in his missionary travels throughout Italy, John also found success as a preacher in Central Europe, where he opposed the Hussites error regarding the nature and administration of the Eucharist. After Constantinople fell to Turkish invaders in 1453, Pope Nicholas V sent John on a mission to rally other European leaders in defense of their lands.Nicholas successor Pope Callixtus III was even more eager to see the Christian world defend itself against the invading forces. When the Sultan Mehmet II sought to extend his territorial gains into Serbia and Hungary, John joined the celebrated general Janos Hunyadi in his defense of Belgrade. The priest personally led a section of the army in its historic victory on Aug. 6, 1456.Neither John nor the general, however, would survive long past the battle.Weakened by the campaign against the Turks, Hunyadi became sick and died soon after the victory at Belgrade. John survived to preach Janos Hunyadis funeral sermon; but his own extraordinary life came to an end after a painful illness, on Oct. 23, 1456. St. John of Capistrano was canonized in 1724. 031 – John Jam and the Real Estate Market SYNOPSIS John “Jam” Jamgochian is the featured guest in episode 31 of Marketing RV with Ranalli & Volpe. With a refreshing approach to real estate sales, Jam unveiled the secrets to thriving in the market amid rapid changes over three decades. What he did not say but is evident, is that he has the right attitude. John has a friendly, approachable demeanor and he is open to new ideas and change. Isn't that key to success in any industry? John explained his recent move to Keller Williams and shared KW best practices that differentiate the group from competing firms. The things that attract realtors to KW also attract home sellers and buyers. Adopting new technology is one of the top attractions. Because he works closely with realtors in his role as digital architect, Gene was very familiar with KW's new Command platform and able to inquire about specific details. John also shared tactics he employs to generate leads in a very competitive field. With slight retrofitting, all this knowledge can be applied to any field. Neither John, Lorraine, nor Gene is a fan of the hard-sell tactic. Gene said it best, “I'd rather you put a little bit of effort into learning about me before approaching me with a sale. Then I'd be more likely to buy from you.” Amen! That's the secret to a large percentage of first-time sales and 99% of repeat sales. This episode was recorded at Nick's Roast Beef in West Chester, Pa. Partnering is a surefire way to promote your brand, which is why we take Marketing RV on the road and talk business with interesting guests. Until season 2 releases we really don't have much more to talk about. Neither John or myself have read the books, but we both love the series. Listen to the episode to hear all our thoughts, but know that if you haven't seen season 1 yet, we have no compunction about spoiling the plot.*We want to acknowledge that we did get the sequence of events wrong in our summary for episode 6 of the series. Welcome back to the ModState Podcast. On this 101st episode John and Nate explore the 2nd a 4th amendment. It is important to add a disclaimer to this episode. Neither John or Nate are conspiratorial, and this episode is by no means tin-foil hat. However, Nate lays out an important position regarding 4th amendment infringements that are insidiously happening, as we speak, with little issue from the same individuals who hold the constitution so dear. This isn't an argument about which amendment is more important but what a world will look like in an "Orwellian" state that 2nd amendment purists claim will happen if their, "guns are taken away." With the repeal of the Propaganda Act that allows for the US government to broadcast propaganda, designed for foreign nations, to be disseminated on US soil coupled with the deconstruction of net neutrality we are far closer to an "Orwellian" state where guns may be meaningless. Thanks for tuning in and keep engaged!

"Scarface" - Special guest John Siracusa takes time out of his busy operating-system review schedule to join Lex and Dan for Not Playing’s season two finale. Neither John nor your regular hosts had ever seen Scarface. We fixed that. Of course, Siracusa’s known for being hypercritical. Will Oliver Stone’s script, Brian De Palma’s directing, and Al Pacino’s acting be enough to impress him, or will Scarface need to say hello to John’s little friend: grudging disdain? Hot topics include what makes a gangster movie successful, random characters who suddenly become the center of attention during the climactic conclusion, and man, is Michelle Pfeiffer beautiful. Want to support the show? You can stream along from Amazon and give us a kickback at the same time, or if you prefer iTunes, we roll that way too. You may be wondering when season three of Not Playing will kick off. We’re wondering that, too, and we’ll decide soon! Stay tuned to the site and our Twitter feed for more info.
