Dean Hall was dying. Weakened by two types of cancer and emotionally gutted by grief, he found himself at the end of what medicine and mindset could offer. But in the depths of despair, Dean rediscovered a childhood dream—and made a radical decision to live, not just survive. In this deeply moving episode, Ginny Yurich talks with Dean about the healing power of purpose, the wildness of adventure, and the surprising ways nature showed up as an unexpected partner in his return to life. Dean's story—captured in his book The Wild Cure—isn't just about beating cancer or swimming 187 miles of Oregon's Willamette River. It's about waking up, finding meaning, and remembering that nature is not just scenery—it's a lifeline. With wisdom forged through suffering and triumph, Dean shares how rivers, forests, and even cold water became allies in healing both his body and spirit. This episode is a profound reminder that it's never too late to reclaim joy, pursue a long-forgotten dream, and let the outdoors lead the way home. ** Learn more about Dean and all her has to offer here Get your copy of The Wild Cure here Learn more about your ad choices. That, says the scriptures, THE CROSS is an:OFFENSE.The meaning, the thought, the application of the cross is indeed an offense to the NATURAL MAN. That is, the man or woman who has no belief in Christianity. This natural person, man or woman, is offended by the notion of the cross. In fact, this anti-Christian person is offended by anything about the cross, including the blood of Jesus Christ. For Christians, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, was the act of the son of God who laid down his life for mankind, for the sins of man and woman, and without, says the scriptures, this shedding of blood there is:NO REMISSION FOR SIN.None at all.But the concept of sin generally and the need of humankind to accept that propitiation for sin is offensive, even mythological. Some critics, atheistic, even go so far as to call the crucifixion and the shedding of blood:BARBARIC.They go back to the Old Testament, to the very book of Genesis, where there was a sacrifice of an animal, the shedding of that animal's blood as atonement, remission for sins, declaring that to be barbaric as well. But, again, for Christians, without the shedding of blood, the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, there is no remission for sins, none at all. Sin and blood, and of course crucifixion, say the natural man and woman, is ridiculous mythology and stokes the passions of these anti-Christians in this day and age, perhaps as never before. But sin, the coming short of the glory of God is indeed a reality. In fact, it is everywhere in deed and in heart. Evil is a reality, and there really is no cure for it, except ONE! And that is the saving grace of our Lord clearly manifested to us at Calvary, Golgotha, THE CROSS. Thank God for the cross and Christ!Jesus of Nazareth was tried before Pilate, and the verdict was:I FIND NO FAULT IN HIM!But the mob cried out:CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!Pilate, politician that he was, honored the tradition of the time, to release a prisoner to them and Pilate chose Barrabus over Jesus, so much for justice. To Calvary, he went. Weakened as he was, Simon of Cyrene was conscripted by the Romans to carry the cross of Christ and the Golgotha drama began. Nails were driven into his hands and feet, and there he hung, suffering, parched with a terrible thirst, the crown of thorns on His head causing his blood to drip and his spirit to yearn for the end. He felt all alone, even abandoned by His Father, as he took upon himself the sins of the world, of you and me. In that lonely state, he cried out:MY GOD, MY GOD WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?But then, mercifully, it was over. And his parting words were:IT IS FINISHED!That ultimate act of redemption was accomplished once and for all, for all mankind, for you and for me. There were those at the time who saw the event, witnessed the horrible act of Roman crucifixion, and watched the innocent Jesus of Nazareth suffer. They witnessed his body taken down from that cross, and the man Joseph, wrapping it in fine linen and laying the precious body of Jesus Christ in that very own and special tomb. That was Friday, but then came Sunday. On the third day, this son of the living God, with the power of God, rose from the dead, and accomplished the greatest event in human history:THE RESURRECTION.Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o'er his foes. He arose the victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever with his saints to reign. Blessed are we, by the millions and millions, who have never seen but who believe, nonetheless.BLESSED ARE WE!And we are indeed, for Gentile and Jew, anyone for that matter, all humankind, can have the incredible benefits of the crucifixion and the resurrection, a life of reconciliation here and life eternal there. Death is destroyed, for there now is no more death. We who believe will live eternally with Him so that the life we now live is redeemed, cleansed, and forgiven by His BLOOD. And we will be raised like HIM in our very own resurrection morning to know HIM and to live eternally with HIM.Thank God for that third day. Life here and now is one of joy, unspeakable rejoicing, praise, worship, and thanksgiving because of this great offense, the cross of Jesus Christ, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. So, my fellow Christians, on Easter Sunday and every other day, may we praise God for Jesus of Nazareth, and:THANK GOD FOR HIS UNSPEAKABLE GIFT!

Please listen to this episode only if the content would not be triggering for you. As always, your safety and enjoyment is important to us.With The Dragon's words echoing in the chamber that they've lost, Trix takes the opportunity to get another shot off at the final creature down below. Weakened from blood loss, they nearly fall off the rafter from the effort of the attack. Erdir reveals he doesn't trust them, even though the Emperor does, and says he'll spare their life if they join him. Trix climbs down to check on their companions, finding Rou has not survived the fight. Trix turns to Eight, finding them unresponsive as well, though revivable. When Erdir threatens to reveal Trix's plans regarding the Emperor, they whisper to Eight that they have a plan before agreeing to cooperate. Later, Eight wakes up in a dark, dank dungeon cell. They find they're chained to the wall and all alone. Realizing the chains and manacles aren't enchanted, they use their magic to free themself. They receive a visit from Erdir, who boasts that Trix has betrayed them and Rou has died. A plate of food is deposited into the cell and, in a moment of defiance, Eight throws the plate at the window. The splatter misses its mark, but The Dragon merely smirks and leaves. Eight makes an attempt to leave their cell by dispelling the magic enchanting it, but kickback from the attempt causes them to lose consciousness again.Meanwhile, Rou's body is dragged into a chamber inhabited by a bald stranger covered in tattoos. The stranger instructs everyone to leave, that they have “work to do.”Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue and Wren @ThornyDryad  EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!

Subscriber-only episodeHealthcare and life sciences are on the brink of transformative change, fueled by a combination of technological innovation, ideological shifts, and evolving regulations. Visionaries like Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and RFK Jr. are advocating for decentralization in healthcare, pushing for more personal control over patient data. While decentralization promises to reduce federal oversight, potentially lowering compliance costs and streamlining operations, it also raises serious concerns about the security and privacy of health data. Weakened federal regulations like HIPAA could lead to increased risks of data breaches and misuse, and state laws may not be enough to fill the gaps.Elon Musk's innovations, such as integrating Neuralink with blockchain technology, could pave the way for patient-owned data systems, allowing individuals to control and even monetize their health information. However, this could create a divide between tech-savvy individuals who benefit from these systems and others who remain vulnerable due to a lack of access or understanding. RFK Jr.'s approach to decentralization could shift more power to states and private entities, resulting in a patchwork of privacy standards. While this could encourage innovation, it could also complicate compliance, increase disparities, and challenge the interoperability of health data across states. The move towards decentralization and innovation comes with significant risks. Who will ensure AI systems process patient data securely, without bias, and in compliance with regulations? How will healthcare and pharmaceutical companies maintain accountability in a less-regulated environment? The balance between fostering innovation and protecting patient rights is critical. Companies in this sector must stay ahead of these changes with strategic legal guidance to ensure compliance and safeguard patient interests in this rapidly evolving landscape.

Gave myself a birthday break and you guys access to the extended version of Finding Me by Viola Davis. Also, included this poem that I am turning to right now for hope, comfort, and grit:Still I Riseby Maya AngelouYou may write me down in historyWith your bitter, twisted lies,You may trod me in the very dirtBut still, like dust, I'll rise.Does my sassiness upset you?Why are you beset with gloom?'Cause I walk like I've got oil wellsPumping in my living room.Just like moons and like suns,With the certainty of tides,Just like hopes springing high,Still I'll rise.Did you want to see me broken?Bowed head and lowered eyes?Shoulders falling down like teardrops,Weakened by my soulful cries?Does my haughtiness offend you?Don't you take it awful hard'Cause I laugh like I've got gold minesDiggin' in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words,You may cut me with your eyes,You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I'll rise.Does my sexiness upset you?Does it come as a surpriseThat I dance like I've got diamondsAt the meeting of my thighs?Out of the huts of history's shameI riseUp from a past that's rooted in painI riseI'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.Leaving behind nights of terror and fearI riseInto a daybreak that's wondrously clearI riseBringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,I am the dream and the hope of the slave.I riseI riseI rise.******How do we choose grace and compassion? In her heartbreaking memoir, Viola Davis opens up about her abusive childhood and the adversity she faced as a Black actress. My friend, Ngoc Anh, and I discuss her unparalleled talent, strength in her convictions, empathy and how she encourages us to reflect on what holds us back in our own lives. Through her life story, we see that though the journey to self-discovery is often difficult, it's worth it.  Listener discretion advised: this episode contains mature language and sensitive discussion topics including sexual assaultIf you have any comments or questions, please connect with me on Instagram or email babesinbooklandpodcast@gmail.com. He outlines seven key impacts of pornography, including the destruction of masculine purpose, the rewiring of the male brain, the epidemic of loneliness, the exploitation of women, and the diversion from faith. Frank emphasizes the importance of community and support in overcoming these challenges and reclaiming one's purpose and integrity.   Takeaways Pornography is a subtle weapon used to weaken men.   It destroys masculine purpose and ambition.   Porn creates false expectations about intimacy.   It rewires the brain's reward system, leading to addiction.   Weakened willpower affects all areas of life.   Loneliness and isolation are fueled by pornography.   Pornography objectifies women and promotes exploitation.   It distracts from spiritual focus and purpose.   Community support is crucial for recovery.   Men must reclaim their purpose to lead society. The 40 hour work week was introduced by Henry Ford because he noticed that having a set number of hours for workers slightly increased production. The method was then picked up by other companies and became global. Now people are upset about 40 hours of work each week, and want to abolish it. These are usually Democrats and socialists, many of which call themselves progressives, who are angry about work, and don't understand that Ford was a progressive, too, but a Republican. There may be downsides to the 40 hour work week, but prior to the industrial revolution people were working 80 to 100 hours a week, for six days, including children. So which would you rather have?  Zinc and the Common Cold: What You Need to KnowWhat does zinc do for the body? Zinc is an essential trace element vital for immune function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis. It supports over 300 enzymes and the proper function of immune cells like T-cells and macrophages. Zinc also aids in the production of antibodies that fight infections.A recent review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found that zinc supplements might not prevent colds, but taking zinc at the onset of symptoms can reduce the duration by about two days. This represents a 10-20% decrease in illness length, which is clinically significant.Takeaways:1. Zinc element in immunity: vital for immune cell function and enzyme activity, making it crucial in fighting infections.2. Supplementation: Zinc gluconate and zinc acetate lozenges may effectively reduce cold duration if taken within 24 hours of cold symptoms.3. Zinc supplementation reduces sick days of the common cold, but does not affect the odds of catching a cold or symptom severity.4. Zinc deficiency: Can lead to significant health issues, emphasizing the need for adequate intake.Safety note: Zinc supplements are generally well-tolerated, but high doses can cause nausea and gastrointestinal distress. Do not exceed the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 40 mg/day regularly for adults without medical supervision. What zinc should I take? Zinc gluconate and zinc acetate lozenges can be effective for boosting the immune system during colds. They can reduce the duration of symptoms if taken at the onset of illness. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any supplement regimen.Zinc deficiency symptoms:Weakened immune responseHair lossDiarrheaDelayed wound healingLoss of appetiteImpaired growth and development in childrenBenefits of zinc:Zinc Benefits For Men: Supports testosterone production, muscle growth, and overall immunity.Zinc Benefits for Women: Crucial for reproductive health, skin health, and immune function.Zinc-rich foods:Red meatSeafood (especially oysters)PoultryBeansNutsWhole grainsDairy productsStay informed, stay healthy.References:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8543785/https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD014914.pub2/full Support the Show.

(Psalm 84:5) Have you ever heard someone say, “I don't know how they do it,” when referring to someone who doesn't seem to place their faith in Jesus through difficult times, while they're going through their own strenuous struggle? I have. And I've said it. Recently in fact. On multiple occasions.  I 100% don't think I could have survived the rough patches of my life without the Lord to lean on. Like last month, staring out the window as the paramedic lifted my dad on a stretcher into an ambulance while my family was on vacation. The site left me paralyzed with vicious waves of knock-your-breath-out fear. Weakened by the moment, I collapsed in the chair in our rental house, and all I felt I had was the Lord's name to call on, to beg for peace, mercy, and a miracle. I'm pretty sure I would've stopped breathing without his almighty calming hand to hold. And then there were the many days that followed – the unknowns, ups and downs, sleepless nights of worry and what ifs after Dad's sudden stroke – that then slowly became sprinkled with blessings as I began to sturdy my gaze on the Lord. Without Jesus, the chaos of my heart, head, and surroundings would've missed the strength supplied through those around me, along with the peaceful reminders that my cares were being cared for. And regardless of me. Blessings. I would've missed so many blessings without the rock solid foundation of our good God. The Bible says, “Blessed are those whose strength is in you.” Blessed. Yes, I'm learning more and more what it means to have a blessed life. I'm learning it doesn't necessarily mean we will live in a state of constant comfort, contentment, and happiness. Because I'm learning and understanding that quite the opposite is actually true. That this world is really hard, and it hurts. The more and more we live it, in fact. Also true, and I've seen this time and again, that the compounding weights we weather have the capability to crush most people unless they have eyes that see Jesus. An awareness of blessings born with, and beaming through, the burdens, tragedies, and traumas. Reflect with me for a minute. Consider some hard things you have endured or are enduring right now. Can you tie any blessings at all to those difficulties? Maybe an unpleasant, unexpected detour opened a door to a bit of goodness that would otherwise never have been. Possibly a relationship was formed or strengthened through the trial? Perhaps stronger bonds of intimacy were created with the Lord as you clung closer to him? Or you offered or received acts of service that blessed someone or gave you the sweet gift of purpose? These blessings are truly the greatest gifts. They are gifts that the world could never dare to give. This is the blessed life with Jesus. When visiting the hospital recently over my dad's five week stay, when trying to encourage him with the good shining through his hard season, I shared how I've grown closer to the Lord through this difficult storm. Which is priceless. And I'll soon let him know, now that he's just returned home, how I've grown in a closer relationship and connection to my mom too. Yet another precious and priceless gift from God. Yes, God warned us of the trouble and trials to be in our time on earth, but he most certainly promised the good here, too. Aww, thank you, Lord.  Intersecting Faith and Life: Next time you wonder how a good God could allow such sorrowful moments and seasons, will you consider the beautiful blessings they also hold? Notice how those divine presents make you feel in the midst of the treacherous-at-times storms? If you look for him, look for them, you will find his continual blessings. Radiant touches of joy, heart swelling doses of love, generous infusions of peace, and invaluable portions of purpose. God's never failing faithfulness and always available abundance. The blessed life. Which only comes from a life lived close with him. Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

It is based on function. Physiatry and CrossFit focus on function and living better. 08:00 Metabolic health impacts recovery, injury propensity, pain levels and physical function. Leptin worsens osteoarthritis and pain issues. 12:15 Osteoarthritis is from the dysfunction of chondrocytes within the joint from inflammation and fragility of cartilage within the joint. Metabolic disease causes a downward spiral. There is more inflammation and more cartilage damage and more boney hypertrophy. 14:00 Trigger finger is often a first sign of metabolic disease. Tendons are also impacted by the inflammation of metabolic disease. Healing process is impacted by the chronic inflammation of metabolic disease. 14:54 Bone and bone density are impacted inflammation. This can appear as stress fractures. Treat the fracture and the reason why. 17:00 Hemoglobin A1C is a marker of overall glycation in the body. Non-painful things become painful with increased glycation. 17:30 The burden of age-related changes is dependent upon your metabolic state and physical wellbeing. 96% of American adults have some sort of metabolic dysfunction, making them predisposed to accelerated aging and physical decline. 23:00 Time is a major reason for not exercising. Short 20-minute bouts of more intense exercise are easier to fit in and you get the same metabolic benefits in a shorter time. 23:40 Functional movement training increases strength and supports life functions. It uses multiple joints and practices coordination. 24:30 Heavy resistance training induces the benefits of bone density and muscle integrity. 24:45 Osteosarcopenic obesity: as you gain weight, you lose muscle mass and bone. 26:00 Weakened tendons, tendonitis, and fibrosis are often a result of chronic inflammation from metabolic dysfunction like diabetes. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US. 27:25 Cortisone is a potent anti-inflammatory that brings short-term pain relief. It can raise blood sugar. Repeated cortisone injections can further degrade cartilage, worsening arthritis. You can build up a tolerance to it. 29:00 Hormones affect joint pain. Menopausal decreased estrogen levels correlate to increased joint pain. 29:40 Turmeric, omega 3s, vitamin D anti-inflammatory effects can be effective in a person with a small amount of inflammation. 31:00 PRP can be beneficial in the right patient with mild arthritis or chronic tendinopathy. It is only as good as whatever is attached to it. PRP efficacy depends upon your metabolic health. 34:10 Athletes have more muscle mass around the joints making the joint more functional and eases the load bearing on the joint. Muscle secretes myokines, which affect pain perception. 34:50 Chronic inflammation from metabolic disease around your joints can affect levels of inflammation and how the inflammation is received by your brain. It can affect brain serotonin signaling. 36:00 Low carb diets produce less leptin signaling which reduces pain and inflammation signaling. 39:50 Dr. West prioritizes protein. Traditional medicine protein recommendations are just enough to keep you alive. Protein helps with satiety and powers workout gains. 41:25 Animal protein, over plant protein, can help you feel stronger. It is challenging to get enough plant protein without eating a lot of carbs. Chronic vegan/vegetarian dieting can cause collagen and bone breakdown. 50:30 Eccentric loading of the Achilles tendon can help build capacity and be more effective than chronic stretching. Tight hamstrings can be addressed with hip extension, pelvic tilting, and hip adduction. 55:25 There can be some risk to doing isolated heavy bicep work. You can develop bicep tendonitis. Over time, it can result in rupture of the bicep tendon. 58:36 Shoulder: Drill down on technique before adding load or intensity. 01:00:10 Hanging is important for grip strength and being able to manage your own body load. 01:01:10 Deadlift/hip hinge can be done using a platform to limit range of motion to maintain form. Push with your legs rather than pulling with your back. 01:02:30 Have a physical biomarker. Do an annual measure of functional movement or movements to track your strength and fitness, along with your labs. Continue to improve. Physical goals are important. 01:06:30 Coca Cola/Gatorade has invested heavily in healthcare, exercise science and exercise guidelines. Fitness professionals are pressured not to make nutritional recommendations. Coca Cola is involved in the American Cancer Society and American College of Cardiology.
