WE'RE BACK with a new episode of the Talk Birdie To Me Series and this week we're joined by comedian and podcaster, John Robins. 30 minutes of chat about his golf obsession, how he stumbled across Loch Lomond for FREE, and finding Tiger Woods' locker in the changing room.
Award-winning comedian and broadcaster John Robins tackles the fundamental question: are alcoholics born or made?In this episode, John opens up about his 20-year struggle with chronic alcohol use, the childhood signs that hid in plain sight, and why every "moderation spreadsheet" failed until he accepted that one drink was the real problem. The conversation moves past the "why" of addiction to focus entirely on the "how" of recovery. John shares the exact moment a podcast changed everything, the reality of rock bottom, and how he uses a toolkit of 12-step meetings, meditation, and running to build new neural pathways. It's a raw, deeply honest look at the daily practice of sobriety and the liberating truth that you can only ever get one day sober in a day. This episode covers the following themes: Addiction, Acceptance, Denial, Moderation, and Recovery.John's book Thirst: Twelve Drinks that Changed My Life is out now: https://amzn.eu/d/0ahkSNchNeed Support?Samaritans: Call 116 123 or visit samaritans.orgNarcotics Anonymous: na.orgAlcoholics Anonymous: alcoholics-anonymous.org.ukMental Health Mates: mentalhealthmates.co.ukShout: https: giveusashout.orgIAPT: https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/adults/nhs-talking-therapies/Better Help

“Life's too short to drink bad wine, when people are wine, and drinking is being near them and having them in your life.” Another wise and pithy quote from the mind of John Robins. You'd think that's included in his wise and pithy autobiography about alcohol. In fact it's not, because he gives them out for free here. Gratis.Speaking of all the relevant pith, John's a bestseller! Isn't that neat. No. 2 General Hardback. And No. 1 if you include a vast variety of audio platforms which Big Bird Book won't care to mention.Elsewhere, Dave's brought a present, a listener has been radicalised against Elis and there are yet more sackings in John's crosshairs.Plus, for the RSS & Patreon lot amongst you, you have been ringfenced! It's John Robins day. John Robins Contentaggedon. You simply can't move for Robins. Because John sits at the crest of a content wave. Megatisation, another podcast series, marathon, birthday, millions of interviews and book release have all come as a quick flurry of jabs to the midriff. But is he all tuckered out? Is it all too much? Clearly not because he's got another mad mind game on the go that only Robins could formulate. He's back. He's back in the big time. He won 9 grand yesterday. But it's not all about John, even though today kind of is. Elis is having to accept that The Swans may not trump swans for his son. "Away trip son?" “Well it just feels like a waste of a day.”Plus, who have you chapinhanded? Let us know via hello@elisandjohn.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The BBC has just released a new raft of visualised podcasts - podcasts productions that you can watch as well as listen to. Some are being released on YouTube and some on iPlayer, but all have audio-only versions available on BBC Sounds too. It's part of a strategy to grow listenership beyond the audiences that usually listens to linear radio. But is it where everything is ultimately headed? Andrea Catherwood talks to Jonathan Kanagasooriam, Managing Editor for Podcast Strategy and Video Podcasts at BBC Sounds, about how he's catering for those who like to watch podcasts. And the closure of long wave has been set for the end of this year - we hear an update from the BBC. Finally, we hear from two fans of the longrunning Elis James and John Robins podcast, which has a home on BBC 5 Live. It's been on the airwaves for years, but a recent announcement has indicated that the pod is now moving visualised versions of their recordings behind a paywall on Patreon. Longtime listeners Emma and Chris give their take. “You were hungover thinking about darts.” “You are scum.” “You are a waste that has wasted himself.” “How do you like that John?” “Why don't you just melt in the park you never walked through enough 21 years ago?” “You complete piece of S.”From that exchange you wouldn't think it would be a philosophical episode. However it is. It's deep. It's a privilege, despair, sadness, nostalgia fest. And for once, the despair isn't coming from John. You've got the Bosnians to thank for that. It's also Edin Dzeko's fault as to why Elis is dressed as a man who runs a community farm.Elsewhere Dave gets some coaching off a much speedier runner, John couldn't leave his bed because he had an enjoyable visit to his old university college, and we have a reappraisal of Mellowship Slinky in B major. And finally, do we have a companion podcast to ‘A History of Nudity in a Thousand Beautiful Women with John Robins'? Because, after all, you simply must have two episodes a week these days.Get your Bureau when it's piping hot on Saturday mornings, only on BBC Sounds, and if you want to drop anything down into our digital postal chutes then wang it over to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk.
It's all Hits and Mems today as we imagine two media worlds that John Robins could have inhabited. These being: Bristol local radio (1-4pm) and the manosphere. Traffic, travel and the afternoon countdown to the pub, or grifting? Two forks in the road he could have gone down, but thankfully hasn't. Safe to say his imagination is in fervent overdrive as we also hear of a world where he has $10 million… and won an Oscar. But what of Elis? Well he may have a heart attack. We also receive a right of reply from a disgraced Global Radio employee trying to clear his name, and there's an all time great Mad Dad story of a father in a cultural vacuum. Do you possess anything mildly amusing which could pique our interest? Well elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk is the place to send it. And do get on the blooming Bureau on a Saturday why don't you?

What do Sir Steve Redgrave, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, David Beckham and John Robins have in common? None of them were asked on QI. Elis has though, and it's clearly going down very very well with all parties. But today feels significant as we rope in a special guest to digest Elis hammering his friend using his fast twitch fibres. On top of that, John's having a big day - something which others seriously doubt. “He's probably just had too much hot sauce on his scrambled egg,” cries Dave. Wrong! In fact he's being texted by a ghost curry house. Elsewhere the boys ask Adrian *all* the questions you've ever wanted to know, and we get a bit nostalgic as John talks of the only cool thing he's ever done. As John returns from yet another triumphant, nay groundbreaking eye-climbing tour of the Alps, there are a few questions on everybody's lips: What records did he break this time? Was he able to stick to the confusing speed limits of Swiss roads? And more importantly, what would the future of the BBC look like under the tutelage of the great eye-climber himself, Johnny JR? Wins are totted up, losses are struck off, and a new future for the BBC is hammered out. Watch out prime-time TV, Wordle is coming for you. A major player in the new BBC will be Ania Magliano, who stops by to get pelters about her boggle gameplay. In the vein of all good guests she comes bearing gifts; a cracking Made Up Game that gets the boys' brains and feet working. It's a big big week. No phoning it in this time. No no, as this is the most politically significant balanced podcast in the UK.Finally, the call of the nation has been answered. John Robins has been in the corridors of power. If you notice general efficiency being raised by 0.12% in UK PLC this week then you have one man to thank - external factors notwithstanding. He brought up the economy. He brought up the welfare state. He brought up international affairs. And Elis was there. And John did all of this whilst having a prawn tempura in his pocket. It's a visit to the PM one minute, the next it's the most expensive Chinese John has ever had surrounded by horrible people. The duality of life. And yet somehow despite all these matters of import we get to Geese chat within the first 2 minutes.Want to join John's cabinet? elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp are where you can send your applications.
What's it like to share a bank account with John Robins? Austerity Robins: a notification to his device every single time you make a purchase, no matter how small. Well we find out because nothing can get past him, with, in his own words “notifications echoing through his empty life.”Extraordinary scenes today as Dave got chatted up on the way in to the studio. Was it a student prank? Elis's experiences suggest otherwise...Elsewhere there's a backwards all-timer of a Made Up Game and John decides to pull apart a listener email which relies on more assumptions than economic growth models. For Shames, Games and everything in between it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

473 episodes in and there is still room to excavate the vast intricacies that make up the Pompeii dig of John Robins' mind. Grab your JCB because there's a dump truck's worth to uncover off the back of the latest adventures from the Sad Van. And it all boils down to one thing, as the hotels John's willing to stay in simply say so much about the man.A generic hotel brand is the vessel through which we can get to know him.Does John actually like the things that he likes? Is he a star player who performs badly if he's pampered? Is it all about fantasy, reality, expectation and fulfillment? Is he a “lunatic” for positing made up things that could go wrong for more money? Does John want character in his life? Is shampoo being separated from shower gel too much of a luxury? And to answer all these questions we need the assistance of James Acaster, one of the More Money Than Sense Boys.Plus there's romantic tests and more evisceration of Dave's Parachutes vinyl. Got stuff? Then wang it over to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.
John's been chained to a typewriter diarising his life experiences, and he's so confident about his memoir that he's written “this is a good book” in Bic on its cover. Something all the great authors do, and he clearly has confidence in his witty emotionally hefty prose. But anyway, in this chapter of the Elis James and John Robins show we're whisked to the sunny shores of the Iberian peninsula, because Dave has a Made Up Game that required an entire week of deliberation and a classroom's worth of children.Plus, turn another page and you'll find a one off feature which may or may not feature a dulcetly crooned jingle.Remember you can catch bonus E&J only on BBC Sounds on The Bureau de Change of the Mind. So go and inhale those if you haven't done so already. (We're past DI Robbyns nonsense now, so it's just more of the boys).Get all your passing thoughts in to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

Elis is on the precipice of glory. Just two things stand between him and immortality. First up is the chance to be crowned the fastest dad in all of key stage 1 at his son's sports day. We know he plays football a lot and we know he cycles to Brighton sometimes, but can Elis do it on an overcast Thursday in South London?Secondly, our very own son of Wales has the chance to write his name in Cymru Connecting history (a game that, lest we forget, only he plays professionally). He's Cymru Connected 4 weeks in a row; can he obtain the never-been-done-before quint Connection?John is already a winner this week, as he crowns himself Generation Air Fryer's new pin-up boy. And he makes some bold and slightly worrying claims about the aesthetics of his stomach.Elsewhere there's a belting Made Up Game from one of you the you listeners, and Mad Daddery gets turned up to 11.If the Elis James and John Robins show were a wind turbine, then your correspondence would be the wind making it turn, so keep on sending in your wind (correspondence) to the usual places: elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk on the emails, and 07974 293 022 on the WhatsApps.

But there are two more names to add to the pantheon, two new kids on the block: Elis James and John Robins. Our heroes have picked up their pens (opened their laptops), unfurled their manuscripts (opened Word), and trawled their creative depths to write some verses that Shakespeare himself would be proud of. Why is poetry the order of the day you might be asking? Because the aforementioned Tim Key has unlocked the door to the house and made himself at home, that's why! Plus he's only gone and made a film which crucially John wasn't invited to the screening of. Elsewhere, there is newsworthy Cymru Connection to captivate people, but are they being entertained for all the wrong reasons? Also Dave's life has fallen apart because Hannah's gone to Ibiza. Tim's also in Saturday's Bureau de Change of the Mind if you want some bonus Key. That of course is only on the delectable BBC Sounds. If you want to get in touch then elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk is the means, as is 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

He's only gone and done it again. The serial winner himself, John Robins, the narrative bender, has won yet again. Despite not even really liking football, John just can't help being John, and he's done something on the football pitch worthy of an end-of-tournament emotional BBC sports montage that makes Elis cry. If anything feels significant, this does.John's footballing escapades are recounted with the help of friends of the show Annie McGrath and Rick Edwards, but there is debate about whether the word ‘bundled' should be bandied around as much as it is.Elsewhere it's textbook Elis and John as Elis gets excited about a man from Sunderland saying the word ‘school', and John wonders what happens to our memories when we die. Classic stuff.Lastly, after a peach of a mad dad story, there's 100% consensus for the sentence: ‘you have to read the instructions on a chainsaw'.Do you want to contribute to the great cannon of Elis and John? You can, just email elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.
This show isn't often one for big announcements. But today we park the trivialities. There's not a mention of word games or credit scores in sight. For another obsession is about to take over the life of Johnny JR. It's big. And it could complete his transformation from movement cynic to the Haile Gebrselassie of rural Bucks*.And Producer Dave is simply rubbing his hands together at the prospect of 11 months of ready baked content.Oh we're busy bees today, because there's also time to dip into CVs of the past where Elis simply isn't willing to accept John's stock management claims. There's also some fantastic emails that shine a light on the British economy's productivity problem. AND can under pressure Elis reverse his relegation form in the Cymru Connection? If you've got anything to contribute to our chocolate box of nonsense then get it to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp us on 07974 293 022.*(Well depending on whether Dave's contact pulls it out of the bag. Otherwise we're back to square one).
How do you cope when you're sentenced to life in prison for a crime you didn't commit? On How Do You Cope?, John Robins speaks to writer and activist Amanda Knox, who was wrongfully incarcerated for the murder of Meredith Kercher at the age of just 22. Amanda spent a total of 4 years in an Italian jail before she was exonerated by Italy's highest court in 2015.In a wide-ranging and candid conversation, Amanda talks about the methods she used, and the hope she leaned on, in order to get through her time behind bars. She discusses the unacknowledged misogyny at the heart of her case, and reflects on the ways Meredith's death haunts her to this day.If you need support, you can find help and advice from the following organisations:Rape Crisis England & Wales - https://rapecrisis.org.uk/Samaritans - https://www.samaritans.org/Miscarriage Association - https://www.miscarriageassociation.org.uk/Listen to How Do You Cope? on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. You join today's show mid-crash. Mid-comedown. John Robins is 30 minutes post-butterscotch. How is he meant to broadcast at the top of his game on such a slippery downhill blood sugar slide? Do Elis and Dave need to have an intervention to get him back on the straight and narrow?Amidst such a rut however there's time to dig into offering business advice to local restaurants, and a Made Up Game which sees the tawdry line tested. Plus Elis now has old hands, and The Beaker People rear their neolithic heads once more. Are you a Beaker person getting to get to grips with flint and email? Well get in touch with us on elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or on WhatsApp via 07974 293 022.
If content were a wrist, chat were the blood flowing through the veins of that wrist, and today's episode of Elis and John were the finger, then all 3 would be in perfect harmony. For this is an episode with its finger firmly on the nation's pulse. What else is the nation talking about than mullets, Van Morrison, dressing up your kids, and a pile of tyres on a farm near Narberth? It's an episode that really does cover the gamut of human experience; it contains multitudes. It also contains a pink-t-shirt-wearing John Robins, who's decided to wear a jolly colour in order to tell his subconscious that things are better than they seem. And it contains Elis going beyond the human and trying to Cymru Connect to an email. If you also have your finger on the pulse of chat and want to contribute your wares, send them to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by comic and podcaster and friend to us all, JOHN ROBINS!A naturally evolving podcast which goes from subject to subject while remaining focused and sober at all times. It's almost as if the two people being recorded are podcast professionals. What kicks things off though is a very interesting and revealing chat about mental health, considering the potential saturation with the constant pursuit of happiness (and 'optimisation fatigue'). Elsewhere you'll be treated to a rundown of ways John is similar to Pip, separating the Crossfit politics from the actual actions which are - all said and done - body movements, a good chunk on Wordle (so prepare for that if you are done with Wordle!), politics, toxic podcasting, time anxiety and the benefits thereof, and the joy of Lou Sanders! Because almost all of the world's issues can be solved by enjoying Lou Sanders. And Bonnie Prince Billy, which John and many of us (producer Buddy typing this...!) share. A ton to enjoy. “I just feel ashamed and sad now.”John's in a bad mood. He has made this patently clear he wants nothing to catch him off guard. That's great news for Elis when he's got a big fun surprise for John that he's put a load of work into. Wish him luck.Because it's a huge milestone week for Mr Johnny JR Robins. Two decades on the circuit. And in that time innumerable regional arts centres have felt his comedic touch in that time. So many times has John won. Again. And Again. Thus now is the time to cast a wistful eye back on 20 years of John Robins stand up, warts and all. For This Is Your Stand Up Life.We also circle back around to sex clubs again. This time on The Wirral.Premium bonds are like truffles in the earth. Got any truffles that you prime hogs have dug up and now stand attentively next to, waiting for us to gather? Well send them in to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.
What do the people want? Wordle Live. What do they not want? The Cymru Connection. That's the opinion of John Robins. Just John Robins. You thought that we were out of the Wordly woods. But no, the more concern you have for the woods the more trees John will plant. PLANT being a good starter. John wants a feature substitution and he'll wage this war on Elis, listeners and production staff alike until he gets it.Failing that, what about a daily Wordle podcast? Guys. Guys! GUUYYS!?! Don't run off. It can't happen anyway because they're hard to promote and you can't get a commercial midroll advert in if they're too short. So it's all fine. That door is closed.Anyway there are larks aplenty today on the show, and not the avian sort. For Richard Herring and his singular ball are in today to talk about someone who looks like Tim Key. Plus there's a Made Up Games which really will make TV commissioners *finally* sit up and listen to the ideas machines. If there's any format that you think has the potential to make the boys boat loads of cash then it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022.
