In this week's show, John provides a short update on what's going on with NewScript, and the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he spends a minute or two sharing updates on two of his most popular guests. He spends the rest of the show sharing his answer to a question offered by one of his listeners: Is coaching/consulting by a career expert to overcome very specific challenges worth the cost of the coaching? As John explains during the episode, it depends on severral factors, including the complexity of the problem, the specificity of the problem, and the skills and reputation of the coach. While there is sometimes no objective answer to a question like this, John describes how he would approach the question. And he offers advice on how to optimize your chance of getting the most from the relationship. He also explains why coaching and consulting appear to be expensive, yet offer abundant value to the coachee. In April of this year, NewScript presented its 2023 Nonclinical Career Summit. The Summit consisted of 12 LIVE lectures and Q&A over 3 evenings. The speakers were fantastic, spending 50 minutes addressing topics from preparing for career transition, to specific nontraditional careers. My presentation covered the topic of Hospital Leadership Jobs. Today's podcast is an excerpt of the first 25 minutes of that presentation. It covers the following topics: my journey from full-time family physician to hospital CMO, why hospital leadership is a great career, which areas to start as medical director, the salary to expect and how to find salaries of others working in nonprofit hospitals, answer the question, does your specialty matter?, and, the five areas in which to develop new skills. For the past 2 months, John has been posting 30-minute responses to questions for NewScript. If you're not a NewScript member, you may recall that Dr. Tom Davis and John created NewScript 2 years ago as a place for clinicians who are disillusioned and disappointed by the current healthcare working conditions to get together to support one another, learn from each other, and access all kinds of resources to help them. Inside the NewScript membership, we provide recorded audio and video lessons, live events, and access to a dozen Mentors with expertise in nonclinical and nontraditional careers. John started holding Q&A sessions 2 months ago. The sessions are recorded and posted for NewScript members to view at their convenience. And he thought that the material in a recent session would be helpful to many of you, especially if you're a new listener. He hopes you enjoy it You will find all of the links mentioned in the episode at nonclinicalphysicians.com/best-first-resources/ =============== You can support this podcast by making a small monthly or annual donation. In this week's episode, John Jurica provides an overview of the factors that went into planning the first NewScript Nonclinical Career Summit. NewScript is an online community of clinicians looking for professional satisfaction, overcoming the stress and burnout arising out of the current healthcare system, and moving into more satisfying nonclinical and nontraditional careers. John is the co-founder with Dr. Tom Davis. During his presentation, John addresses several issues: what inspired John and Tom to create a 3-day Summit; the principles they followed during the process; how they planned each of the important components of presenting a Summit, from choosing the curriculum, recruiting speakers, and creating the website, to marketing the Summit, and managing the event. John invited everyone to join the free live event on April 11 through 13, from 7:00 PM until 11:00 PM Eastern Time. During each 4-hour session, there will be four 30-minute presentations followed by 20 minutes of live Q&A and a short break. If you like our podcast and would like to subscribe and leave us a 5-star review, we would be extremely grateful! “It's all about choices in your life. There are so many options out there. And when you have the industry mandated blinders on, on the treadmill, never being told you're good enough, it's easy to get the feeling that ‘This is all there is to life.' There is an entire world out there! And the health of the system is not on your shoulders.” -Tom Davis, MD In today's episode, we are excited to welcome Dr. Tom Davis back (click here for our previous episode with Dr. Davis). Dr. Davis is an entrepreneur, telemedicine expert, mentor, speaker, and author. He consistently releases great high-value content across his many channels so clinicians can serve their patients sustainably and with joy, while prioritizing their own well-being. In this episode, Dr. Davis speaks with host, Dr. Jen Barna, about the company he created with cofounder Dr. John Jurica, called NewScript. “NewScript is a community of healthcare professionals, career transition mentors and wellness specialists helping each other to live a better life.” Dr. Davis talks about the inspiration behind starting NewScript and how it helps healthcare professionals feel less alone and gives them the opportunity to share their journeys in a confidential, safe space. Dr. Davis also shares his experience on TikTok and how he's found success creating short, informational videos. Dr. Davis and Dr. Barna also discuss the NewScript Annual Summit coming up on the topic of NonClinical Careers. “This summit is designed to: Introduce you to fulfilling nonclinical careers and side jobs Inspire you to overcome limited beliefs and take bold action Teach you how to pursue the most popular nontraditional jobs” Click this link to sign up for the NewScript Summit today! The live event starts April 11, 2023. After hanging his shingle in a small town on the Missouri River in 1994, Dr. Tom Davis and his partners leveraged one of the first total-risk Medicare Advantage contracts into the creation of a regional health system. After 18 years of wonderfully autonomous practice, Dr. Davis sold his health system to a regional competitor for $132m and began traveling the country with one goal, using the lessons learned to mentor other clinicians and their organizations in how to quit the treadmill and practice with joy. Telemedicine, cash-pay clinical revenue streams, value-based healthcare, expert witness, course work, consulting, speaking, writing; Dr. Davis' unique, practical perspective has helped thousands of clinicians lead more fulfilled lives. We discuss common myths about nonclinical jobs, some of the higher paying ones, lesser known ones, and what sounded so interesting that he's applied for it. We didn't mention it in the episode, but that company is Virta Health. In 2018, he created the Nonclinical Career Academy (nonclinicalcareeracademy.com, an online educational platform. John and Dr. Tom Davis recently launched NewScript, an online community of healthcare professionals, career transition mentors, and wellness specialists helping each other live a better life. The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the pharmaceutical industry is a popular position for physicians who wish to leave clinical practice. This is true because it is possible to qualify for the job regardless of the extent of training (i.e., whether residency-trained or board certified, or not) or specialty; it does not require special certifications or degrees (beyond a medical degree); and it provides a moderate amount of flexibility to work part of the time from home. However, it often involves traveling to meet with clients up to 60% of the time. John created a six-lesson course called How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison for the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he has taken excerpts from that course for PNC Podcast Episodes 276 and 277. By presenting the pros and cons, and an overview of the steps you can take to prepare for a job as an MSL, you will gain a much deeper understanding of the position and whether to pursue it. He also goes into detail about common tactics used to find a nonclinical career, including converting your CV to a resumé, engaging mentors; networking effectively, creating a LinkedIn profile, and identifying professional organizations that can hasten your progress. The course can be found at: https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/mslcourse. You will find links mentioned in the episode at https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/captivating-career-as-an-msl. “I've been doing this with specialists and primary care doctors and the innovation there is just amazing. And the opportunity to live the life that you want to lead is more amazing still.” - Dr. Tom Davis MD FAAFP Telemedicine is a rapidly growing field, and in this episode Dr. Jen Barna speaks with telemedicine expert, Dr. Tom Davis. Entrepreneur, mentor, speaker, and author, Dr. Tom Davis talks about his journey into telemedicine and how this enables him to work from the road, enjoying his freedom while slow traveling. Dr. Davis is an authority on telemedicine and he has the answers to your questions. You will hear why telemedicine is such an attractive option for doctors as well as how it can open you up to do the things you love while still earning a great salary. It has given Dr. Davis freedom to practice while traveling all over the world with his wife and two dogs. Is telemedicine for you? Please let us know! Telemedicine, cash-pay revenue streams, value-based healthcare, and Dr. Davis' unique, practical perspective has helped more than a million patients receive better care and left thousands of clinicians more fulfilled. He currently shares his wisdom in his online community app NewScript, available on Apple and Google play. Mentor, Speaker, Author---Dr. Davis consistently releases great high-value content across his many channels so clinicians can serve their patients sustainably and with joy. Tom Davis MD FAAFPDr. Tom Davis is a healthcare expert and consultant who is also co-founder of New Script, a community for healthcare professionals to communicate and share ideas. One of the missions of New Script is to motivate doctors to consider leaving jobs at large healthcare organizations and to start their own medical practices and side work to gain freedom from an abusive system. The idea of New Script was so appealing to doctors who learned about it, without any marketing efforts at all, the platform signed up hundreds of new members in just the first few days of operation. Joining is as easy as downloading the smartphone app for iOS or Android and joining with a new account. In this interview, we discuss the state of healthcare, issues such as direct primary care, physician burn out and gaslighting, and oppression by an educational system designed to keep doctors employed in abusive jobs.I am personally excited to see the evolution of New Script and the conversations that take place on the platform.Learn more about New Script here: https://newscriptcommunity.com/.
