Replay: Working in Healthcare with PTSD: A Nurses' Perspective on Managing Mental Illness with RN and Author, Marcie Resendes

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2025 76:49

Originally aired Feb 1 2022; In this week's episode, I am joined by Marcie Resendes, Registered Nurse and Author of, ‘If The Brain Could Stop What The Eyes have Seen.' Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day. We also discuss methods of how we can protect ourselves against burnout, leading to mental illness, and overwhelm in the workforce.  About Marcie: “I am a 42-year-old wife, mother to three beautiful children ages 17, 15 and 6. I am a Registered Nurse and proud to say I have been for 21 1⁄2 years. The nursing school Diploma Program at St. Clair College was a struggle, but I had a strong heart and passion to be a nurse; a good kick in the butt from my dad when I was 19 pushed me through. During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic.I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. I witnessed head injuries after drunken falls, fractures of bones, sprains and strains, as well as general labs and medical check ups. I loved the opportunity to gain this experience in nursing. It was totally different than at the hospital. I was able to observe how a team (EMS, Police, and Nursing) work together to get the job done. June 18, 1999 was the day my dreams came true: I graduated on the Principal's Honour Roll. Finally I could do what I had strived to do: take care of the sick and make them well. Growing up I had been raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO of the company. I was told that each team member in a company has a vital job to do each and every day to keep the company running. Little did I know that after 19 1⁄2 years of caring for the sick, wounded, critically injured, dying and mentally unstable would leave me with wounds unrecognizable to the human eye. I attended an appointment with my Nurse Practitioner on January 10, 2019, that's when my life changed. I thought I was having a simple return to work appointment after a bout of influenza the week before, but it turned out to be so much more. When Bonnie the Nurse Practitioner walked in and observed me, her first statement changed my whole life: “You Have PTSD”. As the author of "Meditation for the Real World: Finding Peace in Everyday Life," Ann joined me to debunk the myths surrounding meditation, showing us that it's an observation of thoughts, rather than their complete cessation.  Our conversation wove through her journey, revealing the transformative potential meditation holds, even for those of us who feel perpetually strapped for time. We navigated the neurological underpinnings of meditation, touching on its ability to reshape our brains. Ann and I unpacked how the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus blossom with regular practice, equipping listeners with the knowledge to harness these benefits in their own lives. We also tackled the challenge of mind wandering—a natural phenomenon—and shared strategies to refocus attention and cultivate a deeper sense of presence, an invaluable tool for anyone, especially those in high-stress medical environments.  Ann and I didn't just stop at the theory; we ventured into the practical, guiding listeners through a one-minute meditation aimed to smooth the transition from work to home.  Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation! REPLAY - Originally released on June 21, 2022; I am joined by Teresa McKee, CEO of Work2Live, a transformation and leadership coach, certified mindfulness meditation facilitator, and EFT practitioner. Teresa and I discuss her journey into the mindfulness space, tips & techniques on how we as healthcare providers can integrate mindfulness into our everyday lives to minimize stress and ultimately reduce burnout risk and compassion fatigue.  Combining her training and education, including a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.S. in Psychology specializing in Leadership Coaching Psychology, with her experience of over 35 years as a business consultant, Teresa integrates behavioral science with results-oriented processes to help executives and teams achieve their goals. She facilitates workshops, webinars and online trainings and is a frequent motivational speaker for various live and online events. After years of observing people's angst in individual coaching sessions and in group trainings, she realized that the one practice that could change everyone's state of being was mindfulness. What began as monthly recordings for hospital-based home visiting teams to listen to while driving between client sessions turned into A Mindful Moment podcast, now produced in both English and Spanish. Her goal is to help people learn how to live a more enriching life with less stress and more contentment. She has also recently introduced online mindfulness classes to coaching professionals in the United States and Canada and offers online mindfulness courses through Work2Live. Teresa is a member of the Mindfulness Society Global Institute, and is also an avid volunteer in the Los Angeles area, believing in community strength and in giving back. She learned her broadcasting skills volunteering for a public affairs radio program, Sojourner Truth, from 2010 to 2013. She has served as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the My Stuff Bags Foundation since 2014 and was a member of the finance committee for Maternal Mental Health NOW from 2016-2022.  Her new book, Dynamic Response Ability, will be released by Balboa Press in 2022.   Tune in to this week's episode to learn: How we can integrate mindfulness into our personal & professional lives as healthcare providers  The benefits of practicing non-judgment and how to go about implementing this tactic Mindfulness practices that can be used by those not comfortable with stillness How to go from a high-stress state to a calm state in a moment's time The difference between meditation and mindfulness practices   Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation!   Resources   Connect with Teresa Websites: www.Amindfulmoment.com   www.work2livewell.org  Instagram: @amindfulmomentpodcast  Twitter: @AMindful_Moment YouTube: @Work2Live    Connect with Jennifer George: @bestobsessed_with_jenn | Instagram Jennifer George | Website @jenngeorge08) | Twitter Jennifer George | Facebook Click here to check out my book about connecting and communicating with patients to empower their experiences! Replay: How we can Change the Culture Within Healthcare to Sustain Ourselves and Avoid Burnout, with Dr. Joe Sherman, Physician Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2023 49:13

REPLAY - Originally released on Feb 8, 2022; I am joined by Dr. Joe Sherman, a practicing physician for over 35 years, a certified physician coach, an educator, and a former administrator. Joe guides organizations to shift outdated workplace culture into a collective leadership model and assists physicians in one-on-one coaching and group retreats to deliver quality care, succeed in leadership roles, and rediscover fulfillment in their careers. We discuss Joe's journey in healthcare including what has kept him in the profession for over 35 years, what led to his burnout, his anxiety and depression, and what he is doing to change the culture in the field so that others have a positive experience as physicians.   About Joe: “In 2009, after spending 4 years living and working with a mission organization in Bolivia, I returned to the U.S. and my career as a pediatrician at an academic health center. I soon found the institutional, educational, and patient care demands placed upon me to be overwhelming. This eventually led to burnout and a temporary departure from clinical medicine. After a year of reflection, discernment, and support from family and friends, I was able to identify my core values and integrate them into my future career decision-making. I returned to part-time pediatric practice while developing the skills to accompany other physicians, individually and in groups, to re-discover their passion for medicine. Having experienced burnout, myself, I understand the day-to-day struggles health professionals face in trying to provide quality care to their patients while also dealing with the systemic dysfunction of healthcare institutions. I am now a consultant and coach to individuals and healthcare organizations in the areas of burnout mitigation, leadership, and provider well-being. I am a trained retreat facilitator with the Center for Courage & Renewal, a Master Certified Professional Development Coach with the Physician Coaching Institute, and member of the International Coaching Federation.”     Tune in to this week's episode to learn: What the systematic root of the problem in the healthcare field is and how we can address it How you can make a change on an individual level to get closer to your values & what institutions can be doing to care for their employees Why investing in your own health & setting boundaries is critical for practitioners and their patients  How the pandemic has caused an unsustainable climate in healthcare that is hurting physicians and how we can change this   Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation!   Resources Website: www.joeshermanmd.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joeshermanmd/    Connect with Jennifer George: @bestobsessed_with_jenn | Instagram Jennifer George | Website @jenngeorge08) | Twitter Jennifer George | Facebook Click here to check out my book about connecting and communicating with patients to empower their experiences!
