Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November, 2021Weird Darkness moves across five unsettling true tales — alleged alien voices breaking into broadcast signals, the unexplained death of a Hollywood pioneer, a possessed home bar in Mexico, the superstitious roots of dressing infant boys in blue, and the bloody thirty seconds behind the O.K. Corral. It opens with the alleged extraterrestrial transmissions that have arrived through ordinary radios and televisions rather than from deep space. On November 26, 1977, at 5:12 PM, a deep, water-logged voice overrode five Southern Television transmitters across southern England, speaking over news reader Ivor Mills for five and a half minutes; the voice named itself Gramaha — also transcribed as Vrillon, Gillon, or Glon — a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, and warned humanity to abandon nuclear energy before the dawning New Age of Aquarius. The Independent Broadcasting Authority never logged the interruption and could not explain how its instant switch-off monitoring was bypassed. Years earlier, in July 1961, an eighteen-year-old ham radio operator named Robert P. Renaud had picked up a soft feminine voice high in the 25-meter band claiming to broadcast from a planet called Korendor, eventually trading images on his television's vidicon tube with a contact named Lin-Erri, an episode investigator Allen Griese found oddly free of showmanship or profit. A decade after Renaud, in January 1971, British UFO researcher Rex Dutta took a call on a radio talk show from a voice that registered no echo, no feedback, and no movement on the station's VU meter. From there the episode crosses to November 1924 and the death of Thomas Ince, the producer who founded Culver Studios in 1918 and earned the title Father of the Western. Ince died days after celebrating his birthday aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht, the Oneida, on a weekend cruise to San Diego that also carried actress Marion Davies and, by rumor, Charlie Chaplin. The official account blamed acute indigestion, but Hollywood whispered that Hearst, jealous over Davies, fired a diamond-studded revolver in the dark and put a bullet meant for Chaplin into Ince's head instead. The body was cremated, no inquest was held, San Diego district attorney Chester Kemply closed the case after a single session, and gossip columnist Louella Parsons soon received a lifetime Hearst contract. Decades later, workers at Culver Studios reported a man in a bowler-type hat watching them from the catwalks during 1988 renovations, frowning, declaring that he disliked what they were doing to his studio, and walking through a wall.Next comes a listener's account of a house in Mexico, bought by the family about twenty years earlier, where a heavy tavern-style wooden bar in the living room became the source of growling, clinking glassware, and slamming cabinet doors that sounded like two animals fighting inside an empty cupboard. The housekeeper, Letty, threw the cabinet open to find nothing disturbed. Weeks later the mother and Letty dug up jars in the front yard containing rag dolls pierced with pins, buried directly on the other side of the wall behind the bar. A framed mirror reading BAR shattered at three in the morning during a housewarming party, a barred window slid open on its own after being latched, and a photograph of a single bar stool showed a clear horned, devil-like face the family begged to have deleted. Letty, it turned out, was a bruja — a witch.Color superstition drives the next story: infant boys, dressed in blue today, were once dressed in pink, and a June 1918 article in the trade journal Earnshaw's Infants' Department called pink the stronger, more decided color suited to boys and blue the daintier choice for girls. The return to blue revived a far older practice, since the ancient Egyptians and Greeks regarded blue as divine and used it to repel evil spirits, dressing pharaohs in it and, as author Douglas B. Smith recounts, painting nurseries to keep satanic spirits from slipping into young children's bodies. Boys received that protection because they were valued above girls, who were thought too unimportant for evil spirits to trouble. The same fear survives in the Evil Eye and in protective amulets like the Hamsa and the Turkish Nazar, hung in homes and cars and worked into jewelry across the Balkans and the Middle East. The episode closes behind the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881, where thirty rounds were fired in roughly thirty seconds. Tombstone, Arizona had been founded in 1877 by prospector Ed Schieffelin, who struck a silver vein worth more than thirty-seven million dollars after being warned that all he would find out there was his own tombstone. Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan, and James Earp, joined by the gun-slinging ex-dentist Doc Holliday, clashed with the Cochise County Cowboys, a feud that hardened after Curly Bill Brocius accidentally killed city marshal Fred White in 1880 and Virgil took the post. The gunfight left Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury, and nineteen-year-old Billy Clanton dead while Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne fled, and Judge Wells Spicer afterward released the Earps as having committed an unwise but not criminal act. The reckoning continued past the verdict, with Virgil shotgunned in the back, Morgan assassinated over a game of pool in a plot tied to Ike Clanton, and Wyatt Earp drifting west until his death in California in 1929 at the age of eighty.

Cold War Cast

Today we're talking about one of the key films of the Cold War, The Day The Earth Stood still. In the film a humanoid alien, Klaatu, delivers a message to Earth - live peacefully or else. Through Klaatu's interactions with humans we look at our society through a mile high (or 200 million “earth miles”?) lens. It's a good snapshot of Cold War America and fears for the future - utopia or destruction…and it's up to us (which isn't promising, as we'll see). On some levels it seems like beauty pageant tier politics, but digging a little deeper it brings up questions of the use of force in order to shape the world as you want it. This is one of the best sci-fi films ever made. Enjoy.

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. This series is dedicated to exploring little-known—and occasionally useful—trinkets lurking in the dusty corners of UNIX-like operating systems. When you think about creating and managing archives on a UNIX system, tar is probably the utility that comes to mind. But this was not the first archiving program; ar was in First Edition UNIX 1 and cpio also pre-dates it, sort of 2 . According to the NetBSD manual page, cpio was developed within AT&T before tar , but did not get widely released until System III UNIX after tar was already well known from the earlier release of Seventh Edition UNIX (a.k.a. Version 7). You might think that ar and cpio are old and irrelevant these days, but these formats do live on. Each Debian package file 3 is an ar archive which in turn contains two tar files. On Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, and some other distributions, each .rpm package file 4 contains a cpio payload. So these may very well still be in use on your modern Linux system. But let's get back to the subject of what you might want to use to create archives today. The tar utility has persisted in its popularity over the decades, and you most probably have a version installed on your UNIX-like systems. One of the problems with tar , however, is that it has not kept a consistent file format. Also, different implementations have used differing syntax at times. There are excellent reasons for the file format changing 5 . The names people give files have gotten longer over time, and the original Seventh Edition tar format could only handle a total pathname length of 100 bytes for each archive member. In addition, filenames were in ASCII format, and modern filesystems now accommodate richer encodings with characters that aren't in ASCII. The size of each archive member was limited to 8 gigabytes—unthinkably large back then, but not so big these days. User and group ownership could only be specified by numeric ID, which can vary from one system to another. Many other types of files and information simply couldn't be stored: block and character device nodes, FIFOs, sockets, extended attributes, access control lists, and SELinux contexts. As a result, the tar format had to evolve over the years. One important version was the ustar format, created for the 1988 POSIX standard. The POSIX committee wanted to try standardizing both the file format and syntax for the tar command. While the ustar format addressed some shortcomings, progress marched on. Filesystems started allowing filenames in different character sets and more types of information to be attached to files, so for the 2001 revision of POSIX they gave up on standardizing the tar utility and came up with a new format and utility, which is our actual UNIX Curio for this episode: pax 6 . Since the pax program didn't have historical baggage, they could specify its options, behavior, and file format and be sure everyone's implementation would match. Developers of different tar implementations had been reluctant to change away from their historical option syntax to the standard. The pax utility was also an attempt to avoid taking sides between those who advocated for tar and fans of cpio . The pax file format was an extension of ustar with the ability to add arbitrary new attributes tied to each archive member as UTF-8 Unicode. Some of these attribute names were standardized, but implementers could also define their own, making the format more future-proof. Older versions of tar that could handle the ustar format should still be able to process pax archives, but might not know what to do with the extra attributes. GNU tar developed its current archive format 7 alongside the standardization of the ustar format. The GNU format was based on an early draft which later underwent incompatible changes, so the two unfortunately are not interchangable. Unlike ustar , the GNU format has no limits on the size of files or the length of their names. In addition to its own format, GNU tar is able to detect and correctly process both ustar and pax archives. In situations where its native format can't store necessary information about a file (such as POSIX access control lists or extended attributes), GNU tar will automatically output the pax format instead (called "posix" in documentation). However, it still uses the GNU format by default, though the documentation has been threatening to move to the POSIX format for at least 20 years 8 . The good news is that the ustar , pax , GNU tar , and Seventh Edition tar formats are well documented and utilities across many UNIX-like systems 2,7,9,10,11 are able to handle these, depending on which formats existed when the utility was developed. While your system may not have pax itself installed, there are other archiving utilities that can read the file format, including GNU tar . (Somewhat amusingly, Debian and some other Free Software operating systems package a pax utility developed by MirBSD 12 which largely follows the POSIX-specified interface, but doesn't support reading or writing archives in pax format!) Look at the manual page for the tar , cpio , or pax utilities on your system to see if they can handle pax archives. Perhaps one aspect that has worked in favor of tar and other UNIX archive formats is that they only concern themselves with storing files and make no attempt at compression. Instead, it is common for a complete archive file to be compressed after creation; many utilities can be told to do this step for you, but it is not typically the default behavior. Therefore, if a better compression method comes along, the archive format doesn't need to change. If you do use compression, be careful to choose a method that is available on the destination system. Compressing files is a big enough subject to deserve its own episode, so we won't talk more about it here. So which format should you use when creating an archive? Unfortunately, there is no single answer that applies in all circumstances. The pax format is supported among modern UNIX-like systems and can represent all types of files and metadata. While other systems, their filesystems, and archive utilities might not be able to properly make use of all the metadata, they should at least be able to extract the data contained in files and, if Unicode is supported, give them appropriate filenames. If you intend to unpack the archive on an older system, more research might be needed to figure out what formats it is able to handle. The Seventh Edition tar format (often called "v7") is widely supported, including by older systems, but has limitations in what it can contain as described earlier. Moving beyond the UNIX world, things get even more complicated. Apple's macOS, with its FreeBSD underpinnings, easily handles tar files. However, when it comes to MS-DOS and Windows, it's a bit different. There, a multitude of archiving programs and formats arose, usually combining archiving with compression. PKZIP was probably the most popular of these and its .zip format became common in many places, helped by the fact that PKWARE openly published the specification. While there is only a single .zip format, it has many options, some proprietary, and different implementations have diverged in the way some aspects are handled (or not handled). An ISO/IEC standard for .zip 13 was published in 2015 giving a baseline profile, and sticking to it produces files that can be widely extracted successfully. Other file formats like OpenDocument use the .zip format and typically hew to the standardized profile. Windows' File Explorer, starting with Windows XP, can natively extract .zip files 14 . The Info-ZIP program 15 is a Free Software implementation for a wide variety of systems (even rather obscure ones); while it might not be installed on yours, if you're copying the archive file over, you can probably copy over its unzip utility at the same time to unpack it. So .zip probably has the broadest support, although it might not already be present on every system. However, as Klaatu points out in Hacker Public Radio episode 4557 16 , .zip files and applications handling them aren't always great at maintaining metadata about files. The .zip format doesn't seem to have any way to represent UNIX file permissions, and user/group ownership can only be included as numeric IDs. Other types of metadata on UNIX-like systems are not saved at all. This is probably not a problem in some cases, such as with a collection of photos, but for others it might be a concern. While pax as a utility does not seem to have gained much popularity or support, except on commercial UNIX systems where including it was required to conform to the POSIX standard, its file format has persisted. Free Software systems have generally avoided the pax interface, preferring to stick with the tar utility on the command line, but usually have good support for archive files in the pax format. Outside of UNIX-like systems, .zip seems to have become the most common file format, and support for it is also good in the UNIX world, though it might not be built in. Drinking a One-Two Punch In an earlier episode, I mentioned that between the ages of five and eight, my older brother used to take me to the Saturday afternoon matinees at a large movie theatre near our home in Northeast Philadelphia. Those outings were magical — the darkened theatre, the smell of popcorn, and the giant screen that opened windows to worlds far beyond my own. As I shared before, I saw some of the great science fiction classics of the 1950s, films that made an indelible impression on my young mind — impressions that, in some ways, have stayed with me ever since. In that earlier episode, we explored Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a film that warned of a future where human beings had become emotionless replicas — walking robots in human form. In this episode, we'll turn our attention to two other remarkable science fiction classics that touched me on a deep, existential level. The first is The Day the Earth Stood Still — a film that offered a profound vision of the power of human choice in the effort of our survival. The second is The Incredible Shrinking Man — a film that took me inward, toward the mystery of identity, consciousness, and what existence really means. The Day the Earth Stood Still The Day the Earth Stood Still opens in Washington, D.C., where a flying saucer lands on the National Mall, instantly drawing the attention of both the military and the public. From the ship emerges a calm, human-like visitor named Klaatu, who announces that he has come in peace, bearing a message to aid humanity. But when he reaches into his suit and pulls out a small, unfamiliar device, a nervous soldier panics and fires his rifle, wounding him. In that instant, a towering robot named Gort steps out of the ship and begins to disintegrate the soldiers' weapons with a blinding energy ray. The chaos halts only when Klaatu, wounded but composed, commands Gort to stop. He then explains that the device he was holding had been a gift intended for the President of the United States — a symbol of peace, not threat. Klaatu Among Humans Klaatu is rushed to Walter Reed Army Hospital, where he requests an audience with the world's leaders to deliver an urgent message. But the atmosphere of Cold War paranoia makes cooperation impossible. Frustrated by political barriers, Klaatu escapes the hospital and disguises himself as an ordinary man named “Mr. Carpenter.” He rents a room in a boarding house, where he befriends a young widow, Helen Benson, and her curious son, Bobby. Through his time with them — especially his friendship with Bobby — Klaatu experiences the rhythms of ordinary American life: simple kindness, curiosity, and fear. Eventually, he meets the brilliant Professor Barnhardt, a scientist modeled after Albert Einstein, who recognizes Klaatu's sincerity and agrees to help gather the world's leading scientific minds. Demonstration of Power To prove the seriousness of his mission, Klaatu arranges a global demonstration. At precisely noon, all electrical power across the planet ceases for thirty minutes. Lights go dark, cars stall, machinery grinds to a halt — the world itself seems to stop. Only essential systems like hospitals and airplanes in flight remain untouched. For half an hour, the human race stands still, witnessing a power far beyond its own. Conflict and Revelation Despite his peaceful purpose, Klaatu is relentlessly hunted by the military, who see him as a threat. When he tries to return to his spaceship, soldiers open fire, gravely wounding him. But before this, he had given Helen specific instructions: if anything happens to him, she must go to Gort and say the words — “Klaatu barada nikto.” Helen bravely delivers the message. Gort obeys, retrieves Klaatu's body, and revives him using alien technology. When Klaatu awakens, he tells Helen that his revival may be temporary — for only the Divine Power, not science, holds true authority over life and death. Final Warning In the film's climactic moment, Klaatu addresses the assembled scientists, revealing the full purpose of his visit. His people, he explains, monitor planets across the galaxy. Earth's combination of nuclear weapons and emerging rocket technology has made it a danger not only to itself but to all intelligent life. Klaatu's civilization lives in peace — but that peace is maintained by an interstellar police force of powerful robots like Gort. Any planet that threatens the balance of life will face destruction. Then he delivers his unforgettable warning: “The decision rests with you. We shall be waiting for your answer. The choice is simple — join us and live in peace, or pursue your present reckless course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer.” With that, Klaatu bids farewell, boards his spacecraft with Gort, and departs into the heavens — leaving humanity to decide its fate. Even though I was still just a little kid, I could barely move at the end of that movie. I remember sitting there, completely still, deeply shaken by the realization that we — the human race — are actually a very primitive species, and that there may exist an intelligence in the universe far more advanced and powerful than our own. Of course, the most unforgettable moment, was when Klaatu demonstrates his power by literally stopping all electricity on Earth for thirty minutes. Trains grind to a halt, factories fall silent, cars stall in the streets, and even wristwatches freeze in time. In that single moment, the entire world is brought to its knees, forced to experience its utter helplessness before a power infinitely greater — and yet, astonishingly, not malevolent, but filled with wisdom and compassion. Throughout the story, human beings are shown as anxious and paranoid, their decisions shaped by fear and greed. The aliens, by contrast, are calm, wise, and profoundly compassionate — beings who have long transcended the primitive impulses that still dominate us. Beneath the surface of the film runs a clear message: we are not the ultimate masters we imagine ourselves to be. And humanity is in critical need of a vast expansion of consciousness. Perhaps the wisest response to such a revelation is not more fear or aggression, but the openness that comes from true humility — the humility to listen, to learn, and to evolve. For this unknown force has shown us that it holds complete power over us, and yet it extends a hand of understanding. Its message could not be clearer — simple, urgent, and eternal: Evolve… or die. So, this brings us to the second film in today's episode, The Incredible Shrinking Man, which, to quote old hippie parlance, really did a major number on my head. Opening and Setup Scott Carey, a happily married, ordinary man, is vacationing on a boat with his wife, Louise. While sunbathing, he is suddenly enveloped by a strange, mist-like cloud. Six months later, he begins to feel unwell and notices his clothes fitting loosely. Soon, he realizes he is actually shrinking. Medical tests confirm that exposure to a combination of radioactive fallout and insecticide has altered his cellular structure, causing his body to continuously diminish in scale. Public Curiosity and Growing Despair As Scott becomes smaller, he loses his job and, eventually, his confidence. He becomes a media spectacle, dubbed “The Incredible Shrinking Man” by the press. His humiliation and helplessness deepen with every inch he loses. Though Louise still loves him deeply, their relationship grows increasingly strained as he withdraws emotionally. When he befriends Clarice, a kind-hearted circus performer with dwarfism, he finds brief solace and understanding — someone who truly empathizes with his plight. But that comfort vanishes when he realizes he is shrinking even smaller than her, confirming that his condition is unstoppable. Life in the Dollhouse Eventually, Scott becomes only a few inches tall and is forced to live in a dollhouse. Louise continues to care for him tenderly, but tragedy strikes when she steps out of the house, leaving him vulnerable. Their cat attacks, and in a frantic struggle for survival, Scott narrowly escapes — only to be knocked into the basement, where he is presumed dead. The Basement Odyssey Trapped in the basement and now only fractions of an inch tall, Scott begins a desperate struggle for survival. The familiar surroundings of his home transform into an immense and hostile wilderness. He faces epic battles against a giant spider, treacherous climbs over towering obstacles, and a constant search for crumbs of food and droplets of water. These scenes are both terrifying and deeply symbolic: Scott must rediscover his will to live in a world that continually threatens his existence. Existential Revelation As he continues to shrink beyond visible size, Scott experiences a profound spiritual awakening. He realizes that, though he is becoming infinitely small, he is still part of the infinite itself — connected to all creation. His fear dissolves into awe. He looks up at the stars and understands that size and scale are irrelevant in the cosmic order. And then he expresses his realization of the ultimate truth: “To God, there is no zero. I still exist.” Themes and Legacy When I first saw The Incredible Shrinking Man at around age eight, the experience was life-altering — though I was far too young to understand it intellectually. All I knew was that something vast and wordless had opened inside me. I didn't yet grasp its meaning; I simply felt it. Now, after many decades of personal growth and reflection, the film's message has come much more into focus. At its core, The Incredible Shrinking Man is a meditation on human vulnerability and ultimate transcendence. It begins as science fiction but ends as metaphysics — a journey from disintegration and despair to the realization of unity with the infinite. Its closing message is both humbling and exalting: that meaning endures even after form disappears. Beneath its pulp title and mid-1950s imagery lies a profoundly spiritual story about surrender, humility, and rediscovery — the timeless truth that even in the smallest particle of existence, the whole of creation still lives and breathes. Let's take a quick look at some of its deeper foundations. 1. The Fall of the Modern Everyman Scott Carey begins as the quintessential postwar American male — successful, confident, rational, and in control. But his sudden exposure to a mysterious radioactive mist destabilizes everything he relies upon. What follows is not merely a biological crisis but a metaphysical one. His physical shrinking mirrors the collapse of the ego — the gradual erosion of all external definitions of self: status, power, sexuality, and ultimately, even visibility itself. In many spiritual traditions, this marks the first stage of awakening: the unmaking of identity. The process can be terrifying, for it strips away everything that seems to guarantee one's existence. In this light, Scott's shrinking becomes a symbolic descent — the unraveling of the false self that must precede illumination. 2. The Basement as the Underworld When Scott falls into the basement, he has crossed into the mythic underworld — the inner realm where the soul confronts death and transformation. The ordinary objects surrounding him — spiders, matchsticks, droplets of water — are transformed into archetypes of the forces that test endurance and faith. Alone and unseen, he learns to survive not through domination but through adaptability, humility, and reverence for life in all its forms. Each confrontation with danger becomes an initiation. The basement is not a hell of punishment but a monastery of awakening, where the noise of the world falls away and consciousness begins to sense its unity with the Infinite. 3. The Vanishing Point and the Infinite As Scott continues to shrink, the story turns ever inward. The scale of his physical world expands into the scale of cosmic awareness. Matter, space, and spirit dissolve into a single continuum. His final revelation — that to God there is no zero — is a moment of pure, non-dualistic insight. He understands that although everything external is, by nature, impermanent, existence itself is indestructible; even the smallest particle contains the totality of being. This realization echoes the mystical experiences described by saints and sages across the ages: the Buddhist awakening to emptiness as fullness, the Sufi union with the Beloved, the Christian mystic's merging with divine light. What vanishes is not life, but the illusion of separateness. 4. A Science-Fiction Upanishad In its closing moments, the film transcends genre entirely. Scott's voice — serene and wonder-struck — becomes that of one who has passed through the dark night of the soul and emerged into awareness of the infinite. The stars above him mirror the subatomic worlds below, revealing the same pattern in every scale. He is no longer shrinking in the human sense but expanding into boundless consciousness. This is why the ending feels paradoxically uplifting: Scott disappears physically, yet spiritually he is reborn. His final words echo the timeless insight of the mystics — that what is eternal has no dependency on what is external. One rises and falls. The other was, is, and always will be. 5. The Lesson for the Modern Mind When I first saw The Incredible Shrinking Man, I had no idea what I was truly witnessing. Yet even as a child, I felt something profoundly stirring within me — something I could not name but would spend decades watching it unfold. Viewed through the lens of our own age, the film remains a radical challenge to the modern cult of control. It reminds us that meaning is not achieved by conquering the universe but by awakening to our unity with the power behind it. Scott's journey invites us to recognize that the smallest life, the faintest breath, participates equally in the infinite. The film closes not with fear but with awe. It whispers what every true mystic has discovered: that when the external self dissolves, the soul begins to expand — and, incredibly, the Infinite knowingly smiles behind it all, welcoming us home. So I had, in fact, seen two remarkable films with two powerful messages. In the first, The Day the Earth Stood Still, we were shown that we human beings are not the ultimate power in the universe — far from it. Yet within our limitations lies the capacity, and the choice, to evolve to the next level of awareness… or to face the bitter consequences of refusing to grow. And in The Incredible Shrinking Man, we are offered the counterpoint: even if we lose everything, there remains within us an indestructible identity — our connection to the infinite consciousness behind all creation. So even though you may lose everything, in reality, you have merged with the great essence of all there is. Well, that's quite a lot to digest, so let's let this be the end of today's episode. As always, keep your eyes, mind, and heart open — and let's get together again in the next one.

Welcome to Databank Brawl Rewind! Databank Brawl was a series that ran on ForceCenter from 2016 to 2020, and it remains one of our more beloved shows. Though Databank Brawl is on hiatus, we wanted to celebrate it along with longtime listeners of the podcast and reintroduce it to the ForceCenter listeners who began listening to the podcast after the end of the show's run. Though all of the episodes remain on our podcast feed, it can be daunting to scroll back and find them, so we're launching Databank Rewind. Here's your chance to go back to those episodes week by week and laugh with us at old jokes, memorable moments, unforgettable guests, and, yeah, old microphones, recordings, and perhaps some Star Wars predictions that came true alongside many that most certainly did not. Databank Brawl -- where Star Wars characters are plucked from the entries of the StarWars.com databank and forced to fight it out in an off-the-cuff podcast moderated by Joseph Scrimshaw. It's time to fight...From the minds of Ken Napzok (comedian, host of The Napzok Files), Joseph Scrimshaw (comedian, writer, director of Dead Media), and Jennifer Landa (actress, YouTuber, crafter, contributor on StarWars.com) comes the ForceCenter Podcast Feed. Here you will find a series of shows exploring, discussing, and celebrating everything about Star Wars. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. In an effort to not oversell and under-deliver, this week's episode is about like last week's, and to prove it, Raven and Feeney take a deep dive into Klaatu.  Which Klaatu?  Yes; What's the Genesis of Genesis and which Genesis lineup was the best?  Feeney gets accused of being a Raven ass-licker, agree or disagree?  The pondering of Macho Man's voice and whether or not he hurt his throat doing it; Breaking down the difference between Looney Tunes and Disney cartoons and which one has the better characters; Feeney is looking for convention advice and Rich is hot for Geena Davis; Raven wonders how rich Rich would be if he never spent a penny on music; FINALLY the return of Fanmail, and of course, all the usual perversions. Follow the guys on X!Raven - @theRavenEffectRich - @RichBocchiniFeeney - @jffeeney3rdBuy some of Raven's old comics and other goods. Book Vs. Movie: The Day the Earth Stood StillThe 1940 Short Story Vs. the 1951 AdaptationThe Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic sci-fi story. The iconic 1951 film was based on Harry Bates' short story "Farewell to the Master." Both versions share a similar premise—an alien visitor and his robot arrive on Earth, but they diverge significantly in tone and message. In Bates' 1940 story, Klaatu and his robot Gnut arrive on Earth, but Klaatu is quickly killed. The focus then shifts to Gnut, who, in a twist ending, is revealed to be the true master, not Klaatu. This philosophical narrative explores the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of power, and intelligence beyond human understanding. The film adapts the story into a Cold War parable. Klaatu, more of a Christ-like figure, comes with a warning: Earth must abandon violence and nuclear weapons or face destruction by an interplanetary alliance. His robot, Gort, serves as an enforcer of this message, not the master. The film delivers a clear moral about peace and diplomacy, reflecting the political fears of its time. Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? Have a listen to find out. In this ep, the Margos discuss:The settings for both storiesThe differences between the original short story and the 1951 adaptation. The Movie Cast: Michael Rennie (Klaatu,) Patricia Neal (Helen Benson,) Hugh Marlowe (Tom Stevens,) Sam Jaffe (Professor Barnhardt,) Billy Gray (Bobby Benson,) Frances Bavier (Mrs. Barley) and Lock Martin as Gort. Clips used:“Klaatu's speech” The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 trailer)“Gort arrives on Earth”“Kalatu Barada Nikto”Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack for The Day the Earth Stood Still Book Vs.
