In an effort to not oversell and under-deliver, this week's episode is about like last week's, and to prove it, Raven and Feeney take a deep dive into Klaatu. Which Klaatu? Yes; What's the Genesis of Genesis and which Genesis lineup was the best? Feeney gets accused of being a Raven ass-licker, agree or disagree? The pondering of Macho Man's voice and whether or not he hurt his throat doing it; Breaking down the difference between Looney Tunes and Disney cartoons and which one has the better characters; Feeney is looking for convention advice and Rich is hot for Geena Davis; Raven wonders how rich Rich would be if he never spent a penny on music; FINALLY the return of Fanmail, and of course, all the usual perversions. Terry Draper of Klaatu fame has been releasing solo albums for years. His regular routine is to release a new record every year in time for Christmas. His usual process was interupted last year by health issues which he is now recovering from.So for this current project, he dug into the vault and resurrected several old demos from decades ago, along with a fresh crop of new material. This time around, I was honoured to play guitar on three of his songs. I was among 17 players who helped Terry on this one.We discussed the making of Infinity and more in this episode.Get Terry's music and merch at www.terrydraper.comHelp me to keep producing my show at the following site :https://buymeacoffee.com/tsolobandqSubscribe to my Youtube channel Tommy Solo@tommysolo9154Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tommy-solo-s-famous-friends--4318572/support.

Book Vs. Movie: The Day the Earth Stood StillThe 1940 Short Story Vs. the 1951 AdaptationThe Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic sci-fi story. The iconic 1951 film was based on Harry Bates' short story "Farewell to the Master." Both versions share a similar premise—an alien visitor and his robot arrive on Earth, but they diverge significantly in tone and message. In Bates' 1940 story, Klaatu and his robot Gnut arrive on Earth, but Klaatu is quickly killed. The focus then shifts to Gnut, who, in a twist ending, is revealed to be the true master, not Klaatu. This philosophical narrative explores the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of power, and intelligence beyond human understanding. The film adapts the story into a Cold War parable. Klaatu, more of a Christ-like figure, comes with a warning: Earth must abandon violence and nuclear weapons or face destruction by an interplanetary alliance. His robot, Gort, serves as an enforcer of this message, not the master. The film delivers a clear moral about peace and diplomacy, reflecting the political fears of its time. Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? Have a listen to find out. In this ep, the Margos discuss:The settings for both storiesThe differences between the original short story and the 1951 adaptation. He is the author of The Moth for the Star (7.13 Books, September 2023), The Song My Enemies Sing, Soft Invasions, Mistah Kurtz! A Prelude to Heart of Darkness (Anti-Oedipus Press), I, Judas, and Bombshell (Counterpoint/Soft Skull). On the agenda is his psychoanalytic monograph, Wilhelm Reich Versus The Flying Saucers. There is also a discussion of how the classic 1951 sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and its allusions to a Christ-like figure in the person of its protagonist, Klaatu, which greatly influenced Reich. James and his work have been published and commissioned by Literary Hub, SPIN Magazine, Brooklyn Rail, CrimeReads, Salon, Huffington Post, National Book Review, Vol.1 Brooklyn, The Rumpus, International Times, Sensitive Skin Magazine, Entropy, Fiction Advocate, The Weeklings, The Nervous Breakdown, Heavy Feather Review, Poet Republik, Largehearted Boy, Sleeping Fish / Calamari Press, Shelf Awareness, Full Stop, and others. As usual there are spoilers ahead! If you want to read the full show notes you can click the episode on this page and scroll down. The Day the earth Stood Still was released in 1951 just like The Thing from Another World. And just like that film The Day the Earth Stood Still is based on a story from Astounding Science Fiction magazine. The flying saucer craze of 1947 has obviously made its impression on Hollywood and The Day the Earth Stood Still delivered a seamless sleek futuristic saucer along with an imposing shiny robot and a polite humanoid alien who comes in peace to deliver an ultimatum to a world wrangling with the atomic age. The Experts: Glyn Morgan is Curatorial Lead at the Science Museum in London and is a science fiction scholar. Peter Gottschalk is a Professor of Religion at Wesleyan University with a special interest in the South Asian region, empire and science. He also teaches a class called “Awesome Cinema”. Klaatu a világűrből érkezett a Földre, és különös tervvel áll elő, mellyel meghökkenti és elborzasztja a világot. Szerinte a bolygónk rendkívül rossz állapotban van, ezért mindent elpusztít, hogy azután a most élő fajok klónjaival újra benépesítse a Földet. Úgy véli, hogy az embernek nincs helye ebben a világban, ugyanis őket tartja felelősnek a jelenlegi katasztrofális állapotért. Klaatu robotjai hamarosan működésbe lépnek, és úgy tűnik, senki sem képes megállítani a pusztítást... Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Saturday February 25th 2024. Our favourite pub for lunch, The Steading, seemed to have closed since we were last there. Research into what was going on led to the information that the company owning this and several other pubs in the area was selling them all. We decided to try another place in the Pentland Hills area, and went to the Brasserie at Swanston Farm for lunch, which was pretty good. After lunch we as usual adjourned to Dave's Citroen car (Studio C) in the car park, and recorded a chat. Topics discussed YouTube channel recommendations (Dave) A channel about astronomy and science. Anton goes into a fair amount of depth about subjects in the news relating to these themes: Anton Petrov Recent episode: Study Explains Dark Energy and Inflation as Parallel Universes Colliding A channel which is all about making things out of junk. No speech, and only a small amount of music as the build comes together: Epic UpCycling Just watched this one, and am in awe! A Treasure Chest of Secret Drawers made from Pallets and Scrap Terrible weather with highs winds and / or lashing rain (MrX) Seems to be never ending. Have noticed quite a few fences down Large tree down blocking entrance to local park Both parents houses sustained damage, fences and roof tiles. So far we have been lucky with no damage My mother was injured while going out to rescue her outside bucket Possibly related, it seems car insurance prices are increasing (MrX) I have seen some link this to the high repair cost for modern cars because they have lots of high tech included. In particular the sensors placed in bumpers. Some have speculated this to be because the high repair cost of EV's. I came across this YouTube video that shows that global insurance claims have been historically large in recent years due to natural disasters. While the video concentrates on properties I'm sure it also will be affecting car insurance. I believe this likely to be having the most prominent factor for insurance increases. Insurers ABANDONING high climate risk properties I got a Steam Deck for Christmas! (Dave) I borrowed my son's Nintendo Switch in November 2023 to see if I could see the screen and play games on it. I could, but haven't played games since the 1980's so I'm terrible at it! I told them I might buy myself a Steam Deck in 2024, but wasn't sure. Much to my surprise my family jointly bought me a Steam Deck for Christmas! I am pretty bad at using it, but I'm practising I'm learning Stardew Valley at first, but I'd quite like to try Kerbal Space Programme at some point. Cinema visits / movies: (MrX) Hunger Games pre sequel Was not rated very highly but me and Mrs X actually really enjoyed it. Oppenheimer Knowing something of the background story was advantageous Barbie Watched on DVD! Ticks (Dave) We spoke about this subject last time we met. Later, I was reminded of a disease called alpha-gal syndrome, first detected in the USA, which can follow a tick bite. It is caused by the injection of a carbohydrate by the tick, which it has obtained by feeding on another mammal. The carbohydrate is called Galactose-α-1,3-galactose, also known as alpha-gal. This causes a strong immune reaction because it's a foreign substance which isn't found in humans. The result is an allergy to red meat, which contains alpha-gal! This syndrome has been found in the USA and Australia and several other places, but now seems to be coming to Europe and has been seen in the UK. Dog-friendly places (MrX) Waterstones book store is dog friendly. Possibly only relevant to people living in Britain? They have a cafe upstairs which accepts dogs. The pub we used to meet in, The Steading, was dog friendly as well. The latest venue does not seem to be, but is a restaurant, not a pub. Raspberry Pi stuff (both) Dave pre-ordered a RPi 5 in November 2023 and it arrived in December. He decided to get a Pimoroni NVMe Base to take an SSD, and ordered that once it was available on pre-order. Now the RPi 5 is equipped with a 500GB SSD attached underneath, running off the PCIe interface. Dave is working at setting up two RPi 4B systems, and a RPi 3A to run various services in his house. Currently setting up Pi-hole. The RPi 5 will be added to this combination in due course. MrX bought a RPi 4B in 2023 (as they became more available) which he initially intended setting up with XBMC. He had problems playing certain video resolutions with the latest version of LibreELEC running XBMC. He has now decided to use it to replace an ageing server located upstairs. Dave's 'what_pi' script that tells you about your Pi's settings doesn't work on Raspberry Pi OS since this OS stores the information it needs quite differently from Raspbian. Visit to Blackpool (MrX) Met up with family for the long weekend in Blackpool. It was bitterly cold and very windy, but we had a good time. While there we were lucky to get a trip on a 100 year old tram. The tram had very unique seats that allowed you to flip the back over, so they are pointed in either direction, depending on the direction of travel. I thought this was very clever. Haven't seen this on modern buses or trams, perhaps because they don't meet modern safety regulations. Edinburgh Trams (MrX) Following Dave's recommendation from our last show. Me, Mrs X and our 4 legged companion took the tram all the way from Ingliston park and ride to Newhaven. Our four legged companion loved the trams. Seems there has been so much development. Saw lots of new things along the way. Lots of other interesting places and walks for future trips. Can't believe it's taken us so long to appreciate the tram. We have used the train in the past but it's a bit limited by the places it goes though it is very convenient from our location. Think we may be using the tram a bit more in future. HPR changes (Dave) Ken has enhanced some aspects of the calendar page: Reserved show overview - a list of what's in the reserve queue with date, host and show title (suggestion from Archer72). Statistics - a call interface that returns JSON data containing most of the old statistics plus a few more (requested by MrX). These changes were also mentioned in the last Community News TLDR (MrX) Mentioned in one of Klaatu's recent shows From the slang expression TL;DR or tl;dr, short for "too long; didn't read" (see Wikipedia page) Quote: The tldr pages are a community effort to simplify the beloved man pages with practical examples. Details: Website: https://tldr.sh GitHub: https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr Mastodon: https://fosstodon.org/@tldr_pages (@tldr_pages@fosstodon.org) Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#tldr-pages:matrix.org Many clients available: see https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr/wiki/tldr-pages-clients Bash help command (Dave) There is a help command in Bash which is useful for getting information about Bash built-in commands. For example 'help read' will give you a one-page summary of this command which saves a lot of searching through the Bash man page. The example mentioned in the audio 'help test' also works, but since it's a stand-alone command the result is quite similar to typing 'man test'. There are very few (if any) examples though, and that's where tldr will be better!

Classic Sci-Fi month continues with 1951s classic The Day the Earth Stood Still! Klaatu barada nikto!!
In this week's episode of Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse," we delve into the timeless world of radio drama with the broadcast of "The Day The Earth Stood Still." Originally penned by acclaimed author Harry Bates, this gripping tale takes us on a journey of extraterrestrial encounters and the profound impact they have on humanity. Lux Radio Theatre first brought this iconic story to the airwaves on January 4th, 1954, captivating audiences with its thought-provoking narrative. In this radio adaptation, the cast brought the story to life with their exceptional performances. Leading the ensemble was Richard Carlson in the role of Klaatu, the enigmatic visitor from another world. Joining him was Jean Hagen as Helen Benson, the unsuspecting Earthling who forms a deep connection with Klaatu. Billy Gray portrayed Bobby Benson, Helen's young son, while veteran actor Ralph Bellamy took on the role of Tom Stevens, a government official caught in the midst of the extraterrestrial intrigue. Together, they skillfully conveyed the suspense and wonder of this classic science fiction tale. Tune in to Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse" to experience the magic of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" once more, as we celebrate the enduring legacy of this radio masterpiece. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the golden age of radio drama, as we continue to bring you the finest in vintage entertainment.
Debug directly in vim TL;DL you can use gdb directly from vim without installing any extensions. Just compile your program with debug options and do: :packadd termdebug :TermdebugCommand path-to-my-program Now the actual notes: If you actually listened to the show, I am sorry for how long it took me to realize that I was compiling without debug flags. This is not a good overview of gdb, I don't think, for that I would recommend episode 415 on Klaatu's Gnu World Order podcast. The program that we build up to is this: // file: main.c #include #include void greet(char* greeting) { - int end = strlen(greeting); + int end = strlen(greeting) - 1; if (greeting[end] == ' ') printf("%s", greeting); else printf("%s ", greeting); } int main () { greet( "Hello world! "); return 0; } Where we use gdb to find out that we are checking one character past the end in the if-condition rather than the last character, this then results in a double new-line. Once the debugger is launched within vim, termdebug offers a few ways to control the debugging, namely: :Source - focus on source window. :Gdb - focus on debugger window. :Program - focus on program output window :Break - introduce a break point in line under the cursor (in the source window) :Clear - clear the break point in the line under the cursor. :Evaluate - show the value of the expression under the cursor. ... And a good deal more, if you're interested just have a gander at :help termdebug. I hope this helps someone make their debugging experience slightly less painful, as it has helped me recently :)

Count von Nudo and Schmutt P. Eddler do the time warp back to the musical that started a cult phenomenon exactly 50 years ago - The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show. We celebrate the opening song "Science fiction/Double Feature", which name-checks some of the greatest science fiction and horror films of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. We have been able to include six of the 11 films mentioned in this theme week. The other five, such as King Kong (1933) and The Invisible Man (1933) belong to big Hollywood studios, making it more difficult for us to get the rights to show them (but we will keep trying). Tony Sokol over at DenofGeek.com has a great overview of each song and film reference, from which we have stolen, sorry, quoted extensively. Do read his original article for more context and in-depth insights. It is remarkable how well Richard O'Brien knew his B-movies, given that there was no Internet or IMDb back in the days, but that is a sign of true geek fandom. Respect! The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) - “Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us where we stand.” A science fiction film with a message for earth to get its s#!t together, by the great director Robert Wise. “Klaatu barada nikto”.Flash Gordon (1936) - “And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear”. An episodic cinema serial with Buster Crabbe fighting Ming the Merciless. Familiar from television re-runs and of course the more famous 1980 re-make. It Came From Outer Space (1953) - “Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space.” An alien spaceship crash lands in the Arizona desert and people start acting strange. More Cold War paranoia, by director Jack Warner. Originally in 3D but shown here in boring 2D. Doctor X (1932) - “Dr X will build a creature.” Doctor Xavier doesn't actually build a creature (Frank N Further does tho), in this pre-code color film by Michael Curtiz, who later directed Bogart again in Casablanca (1942). “See androids fightingBrad and JanetAnne Francis stars inForbidden Planet…”Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohAt the late nightDouble Feature picture show”The Day of the Triffids (1963) - “And I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills.” Or as Tony Sokol put it, "Vegetarians eat vegetables. Humanitarians, like Doctor X, eat humans. Triffids are vegetables that eat humans, vegetarian or not." So don't look up at meteor showers, or you'll wake up all "28 Days Later." Freddie Francis co-directs. Curse of the Demon aka Night of the Demon (1957) - “Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes, and passing them used lots of skills.” Jacques Tourneur, of Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943) fame, directs this British demonic chiller. A special shout-out to RKO Radio Pictures. We have our biggest Spotify playlist EVER, with over 100 songs.
And I'm not saying that I do it right here, but I hear a tune sometimes, not often, but I hear a companion tune. There are two of them in this show. Can you find them? My email is talesvinyltells.com. Just curious if you're aware of them. Ok. Derek and the Dominoes was amazing, recorded in the brand new Criterion Studios in Miami, Fla. Our lead off jams like crazy. Have you heard the Canadian Beatles? We have some Klaatu. What a name! At 17 is an aural beauty. And Poco finishes us with the title cut from Crazy Eyes. It's a pretty good tune. I want to say thank you to my financial supporters and invite you to join them at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. How can I make this adventure into the great music of the 60s and 70s better? I'd like to hear your ideas, questions and feedback. Email me at talesvinyltells@gmail.com. Thanks for listening!
Few of the sub-genres we cover on the show are as nerdy as prog rock. From the intricate, long compositions to the sci-fi infused lyrics – 70s prog rock pushed the boundaries of rock music and helped bring nerds into the limelight. On today's show we discuss 3 iconic prog rock albums from the era. […]

Any other business The HPR Static Site As mentioned in the last Community News episode, the HPR database and website was moved to a new server, and the static site generator written by Rho`n was used to generated the non-interactive part of the website. Since then, there has been a process of adapting the software to the new configuration. Unfortunately Rho`n has not been available during this process, but we are gradually learning our way around his excellent software and making changes to suit our needs. If you spot any problems or have ideas for new features, please raise issues on the Gitea repository at: https://repo.anhonesthost.net/rho_n/hpr_generator/issues. Reserve Queue A policy change is required in the use of the reserve queue. When there are unfilled slots between 5 and 7 days in the future, episodes in this queue will be used to fill them. This extra time is required because of the time it can take to process a show and load it to the Internet Archive. This episode holds a very special place in my heart, not half because my guest is a stellar chap (not even a quarter of why I like this episode) but also because his name is ALSO Peter and I finally get to use a title I've had for longer than I care to admit. I'm going to type it again because it's such a ruddy humdinger of a title and typing it means I have to say it in my head and I get to realise its brilliance all over again. Peter Rugman is my guest this episode and with him he brings the novelty of the same name and also some riveting contributions to the segments. We start as we don't mean to go on and dissect a Strypes fanfiction about bearing our children. From there we talk through the preceding days drinking and dancing and our Pokemon trainer history, (Rugman, who Peter will be referred to as from now on to save confusion) critiques and evaluates O' Hanlon's current Pokemon crystal squad) before we crack on into the segments. We circled around Sonic Seconds and cover ground from Flyte to Labi Siffre to Kath Bloom to Klaatu to Matthew Sweet to The Raspberries and finally Brian Wilson. Coming into land we don't settle the debate between YouTube app vs YouTube in-browser (Rugman's answer will disappoint you) before hurtling headlong into Vox Pas and take off soaring again into Pete's Patent Pending which enjoys a welcome return (if some sub-standard offerings). After gliding through our shared memories of canine cartoons we careen into Have I Got Tunes For You (recommendations on our end involving 'Novelty Island' and 'The Merrymakers' before we engage the landing gear and round out our time together for an Acoustic Corner for the ages.

A server has been set up on Amazon AWS, and we are currently setting up a copy of the database, mail system and Mailman mailing list service. The Gitea Git repository has already been moved and is in use. The static site created by rho`n is being set up to provide the main HPR website. Work is being done to provide the interactive facilities that need the database, such as show and comment submission. Contacting old hosts The rate of show submission is unusually low this year. The number of active contributors is low too, with a small group of hosts keeping the HPR project from sinking below the waves. A question for the HPR Community - can we contact old hosts to ask them to contribute again? Conversion of Windows-1252 characters to UTF-8 Unicode As mentioned on the last Community News the Windows-1252 characters (aka Latin1) in the database were converted to the UTF-8 Unicode format apparently without exceptions. If anyone finds any unexpected characters in episode titles, summaries, tags or notes from now onwards please let us know and we'll fix them too!

Artists like Rush, Pink Floyd, Nightwish, Toby Keith, Eminem, Hadaway, Guns N' Roses, Shania Twain and more all get brought up. We have our usual fun, but things also get serious here and there. It's a great discussion about how and why certain song kyrics have moved us in great and unexpected ways. It's Season 8, Episode 10 of the Infectious Grovoe Podcast!
We got a bone to pick with you! Evil Dead April continues as Cody and Matt travel through the portal and find themselves in Medieval Times... because dinner theater really is their true calling. They also take time to visit the Deadites in the pit, an S-Mart that is lit, and some hairstyles that look like... dirt.Ash is back for one last adventure, baby, and he's got the one-liners to boot. So strap in, saddle up, and tally-ho!And don't forget the words:Klaatu. Barada. Night Howls. Thanks for listening!Instagram/Twitter: @nighthowlspod

Destin presents a cautionary tale for emerging bands: Being mistaken for a band, even a band as great as The Beatles, could have adverse effects on your success. It certainly didn't do any favors for Canadian prog-rock trio Klaatu after releasing their 1977 space rock opera, Hope. While this cult classic is considered unappreciated by many devoted fans drawn to this album's eclectic ensemble of instruments, theatrical flair, and sci-fi world-building, the conspiracy surrounding their identity ultimately led them down a path to obscurity. However, this beloved record does strengthen the tie between science fiction and prog rock. Could science fiction be the music of prog-rock? Or could prog-rock be the music of science fiction? Check us out HERE! **Prog Notes is a podcast dedicated to the genre of progressive rock. Each episode Destin and Drew tackle an album and delve into the different musical compositions, lyrics, and concepts that make it prog rock. They maintain that progressive rock is still very much alive and kicking, whether it be highlighting key moments from the early years or tracking the evolution of the genre to today's more modern groups. With each new episode, these two childhood friends encourage more people to investigate this unique, sometimes forgotten genre of music and find an album or band they can enjoy.
