    Ivy Insights

The Medicine, Marriage & Money podcast is a hidden gem that I am so glad I discovered. Although I came to the show late, it has far surpassed my expectations. Host Kate is incredibly authentic and genuinely curious, making her one of the most relatable hosts I've listened to in a long time. With each episode I binge, I learn something new and eagerly anticipate future episodes.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is Kate's comfortable and easy-going style. Despite her laid-back approach, she consistently brings out great content from her guests. Her ability to strike a balance between professionalism and relaxation sets the tone for meaningful conversations. Additionally, Kate's "take home" recaps at the end of each episode are incredibly helpful in summarizing key points.

As for drawbacks, my only regret with this podcast is that it took me so long to discover it! It's frustratingly good, leaving me wanting more. However, considering that this is just the beginning of the podcast, there are plenty of exciting episodes to look forward to.

In conclusion, The Medicine, Marriage & Money podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in topics related to relationships and personal finance. Kate's warmth and relatability make it enjoyable to tune in while also gaining valuable insights. Whether you're looking for casual tidbits or delving into complex concepts, this podcast caters to both dimensions with its professional yet relaxed tone. Overall, I am extremely happy that I stumbled upon this podcast and highly recommend giving it a listen.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2024 52:12

In this heartfelt and enlightening episode of Love Lab MD, Dr. Kate welcomes back Dr. Marissa Caudill, aka The Parent Doctor. Dr. Marissa Caudill, a child psychiatrist and parenting coach, reflects on her journey in personal and relational growth, her transformative experiences, and her time at the Honeymoon 2.0 retreat with her husband of 14 years. Together, they delve into key lessons about love, self-discovery, and prioritizing marriage amid the chaos of life.   Key Highlights: The Power of Saying Yes to Growth: Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how she and her husband, both psychiatrists, decided to attend Honeymoon 2.0. Although it felt indulgent at first, the decision to prioritize their relationship proved invaluable. She noted that her husband's unwavering support in saying “yes” to things that are important to her has been a cornerstone of their partnership. She reflected on their shared experiences at personal growth events, such as Tony Robbins' Date with Destiny, which laid the groundwork for a deeper connection and prepared them for the transformative work at Honeymoon 2.0. Key Takeaways from Honeymoon 2.0: Love Languages Revisited: Dr. Marissa Caudill discovered that both she and her husband express love through acts of service but prefer to receive love through words of affirmation. This revelation helped them shift their interactions and become more intentional in meeting each other's emotional needs. Improved Communication: Practicing tools from the retreat allowed the couple to better navigate conflicts and understand when to vent versus problem-solve. Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how this new awareness prevented misunderstandings and strengthened their connection. Erotic Love Languages: Learning about sensual and sexual energies deepened their understanding of intimacy, adding a playful and exploratory element to their relationship. The Role of Pausing for Self-Reflection: Dr. Marissa Caudill reflected on a pivotal moment during the pandemic when she realized that her happiness was her own responsibility. This shift in mindset, spurred by the Dickens Process at a Tony Robbins event, transformed her perspective on her marriage and life. She realized the importance of clearly communicating her needs and letting go of anger and resentment. Balancing Parenthood and Marriage: As a devoted mother, Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how she prepares her children for time apart when she and her husband attend retreats or trips. From scavenger hunts to hidden notes, she keeps their emotional connection strong, ensuring the kids understand the importance of nurturing a strong marital bond. She emphasized that children benefit from seeing their parents invest in their relationship, creating a stable and loving environment. Investing in Marriage: Dr. Marissa Caudill called Honeymoon 2.0 the “best investment” they've ever made in their marriage. Beyond the immediate benefits, the retreat gave them tools and insights that continue to enrich their daily lives, enhancing their connection, family dynamics, and even professional pursuits. The Ripple Effect of a Strong Marriage: A secure and joyful relationship positively impacts all areas of life. Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how her renewed sense of marital harmony has allowed her to show up more fully in her role as a parent, coach, and entrepreneur, creating a foundation of support and love that extends to her entire family.   Dr. Marissa Caudill's Wisdom: "I am responsible for my own happiness." Recognizing this truth helped her shift from blame to action, taking ownership of her emotional well-being and marital satisfaction. Take time to pause. Whether through a retreat, a date night, or moments of quiet reflection, intentional time away from daily stressors fosters growth and clarity. Keep growing. Even as experts in the field of psychiatry, Dr. Marissa Caudill and her husband continuously seek opportunities to deepen their relationship, proving that growth is a lifelong journey.   You can find Dr. Marissa Caudill here:  Www.theparentdoctor.com

In this episode of Love Lab MD, Dr. Kate interviews Dr. Lara Hochman, a family medicine physician and founder of Happy Day Health, a boutique physician matchmaking agency. Known as the "Medical Matchmaker," Dr. Lara Hochman is passionate about physician well-being and matching doctors with private practices that allow them to avoid burnout and rediscover joy in medicine. Key Highlights: Dr. Lara Hochman Love Story: Lara shared her serendipitous and adorable love story with her husband, a psychiatrist, whom she met in college. Despite being shy at the time, she approached him after a series of coincidental encounters. Their connection grew from organic chemistry homework sessions into a 21-year partnership, including 16 years of marriage, two daughters, and a bustling household filled with pets. She reflected on how their relationship continues to evolve, with moments of "butterflies" still sparking after all these years, despite the ups and downs of life. Relationship Dynamics: The couple practices intentional communication and prioritizes spending quality time together, including weekly date nights, which they view as essential for maintaining their connection. Dr. Lara Hochman emphasized the importance of listening, validating each other's feelings, and focusing on the positives in a partner. While arguments happen, they aim to resolve them in ways that strengthen rather than weaken their bond. Managing Chaos and Stress: As a dual-physician household with active children and a growing number of pets, Dr. Lara Hochman admitted that chaos can sometimes strain their relationship. However, staying on the same page, involving their kids in family management, and openly communicating have been key to navigating life's challenges. She also spoke about adjusting expectations and accepting that things won't always stay the same as they evolve over time. The Creation of Happy Day Health: Burned out by the lack of autonomy in traditional medicine, Dr. Lara Hochman left her practice in 2017. After taking time to recharge and explore new paths, she discovered a passion for helping physicians find better job opportunities that align with their values. With encouragement from her husband, she turned her organic matchmaking efforts into a business, Happy Day Health, which helps physicians and private practices connect. She now advises doctors on finding fulfilling roles and works with practices to find the right candidates. The Power of Taking a Pause: During her career transition, Dr. Lara Hochman dedicated one day a week to herself, trying new activities and reflecting on her priorities. She emphasized the importance of creating pauses in life—even for just five minutes a day—to break the cycle of busyness and reconnect with yourself. Wisdom for Listeners: Dr. Lara Hochman encouraged listeners to practice flexibility, communicate openly, and take intentional time for self-care. Small changes, like a few minutes of quiet reflection or a focus on positive interactions, can lead to transformative growth in both personal and professional life. She believed that everything would be more fulfilling once she completed her training. However, a few years after finishing her training, she realized there was still something missing. She discovered that achieving happiness was a prerequisite for a successful career. Dr. Guidry learned that pursuing happiness is an intentional practice. Through studying and making active changes to her daily habits, she now experiences a life of abundant happiness, which she views as the true success in life. Despite her life appearing picture-perfect on social media, she sensed a profound misalignment with her true desires. Recognizing this disparity propelled Seema towards a transformative shift. By delving into the core of her discontent, she began to cultivate a profound sense of inner peace. This newfound clarity not only enhanced her roles as a mother, wife, and professional but also opened doors to unprecedented opportunities that her previous mindset would have deemed impossible. Her journey began with a fundamental shift in perspective, illuminating how her preconceived notions limited her capacity for genuine happiness and personal growth. Through this introspective process, Seema discovered a path to limitless and authentic happiness uniquely her own. Website: https://drseemadesai.com/

Episode 128. Mirroring: The Power Couple's Relationship Hack

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2023 23:15

This technique can get you unstuck. Have you ever seen those older couples in action?…you know…the ones who have been married for 20 or 30 years. They are so in sync. They are in tune. They walk to the same cadence and communicate with the same lingo. This is not a coincidence. This is neuroplasticity at its finest. Through struggles and joys, these couples are in tune with each other's needs and wants and do not even realize how much mirroring is actually taking place in their relationship because it becomes their way of living and loving.  Mirroring is a concept in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that involves subtly matching the behavior, body language, and communication style of another person. When used effectively, mirroring can enhance your relationship with your spouse by fostering rapport, building trust, and creating a deeper sense of connection. Here's how mirroring can be beneficial and some tips to avoid potential pitfalls: 1. Rapport building: Mirroring helps create a sense of familiarity and similarity between partners. By mirroring your spouse's nonverbal cues, such as posture, gestures, or facial expressions, you can establish a subconscious connection that promotes understanding and empathy. 2. Communication enhancement: Mirroring also extends to verbal communication. By matching your spouse's language patterns, tone of voice, and even the speed of speech, you can enhance communication by establishing a more harmonious and comfortable conversation flow. 3. Building trust: Mirroring can help build trust and a sense of validation. When you mirror your spouse, it shows that you are actively listening, understanding, and accepting their perspective. This can create an environment where both partners feel safe to express themselves openly and honestly. It's important to distinguish mirroring from mimicking. While mirroring is about subtly aligning with your spouse's behavior and communication style, mimicking involves imitating them in a way that may seem insincere or mocking. Mimicking can be detrimental to a relationship, as it may lead to resentment or a lack of authenticity. To avoid mirroring narcissism, where one partner excessively mirrors the other without maintaining their own identity, consider the following: 1. Maintain individuality: Remember to maintain your own unique personality, opinions, and interests. Healthy mirroring should not entail losing yourself or compromising your values. 2. Balance reciprocity: Mirroring should be a two-way street. Both partners should engage in mirroring behaviors, ensuring a balanced and equal exchange of understanding and connection. 3. Adapt to change: As individuals grow and change over time, it's essential to adapt your mirroring techniques accordingly. Be open to new experiences, perspectives, and communication styles to keep the relationship dynamic and thriving. Here are a few relationship hacks for building deeper connections and understanding beyond mirroring: 1. Active listening: Practice active listening by giving your spouse your full attention, maintaining eye contact, and responding empathetically. This helps create an atmosphere of trust and understanding. 2. Emotional intelligence: Develop emotional intelligence by being aware of your own emotions and understanding those of your spouse. This allows you to respond appropriately and empathetically to their needs. 3. Quality time: Dedicate quality time to connect and engage in activities that both partners enjoy. This strengthens the bond and creates shared experiences. 4. Express appreciation: Regularly express gratitude and appreciation for your spouse's efforts, qualities, and achievements. This fosters a positive and supportive environment. 5. Foster open communication: Encourage open and honest communication by creating a safe space for your spouse to express their thoughts, concerns, and desires without judgment or criticism.   Remember, building a deeper connection and understanding in a relationship requires consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to grow together.

2023 UPDATED TRAVEL TIPS     Don't let photos fool you.   Traveling with any amount of littles is stressful which is why I updated my Traveling with Littles Tips.   Don't even mention that Cata did not even have a ticket 24 hours before the flight and executive decisions had to be made.     TRAVELING WITH LITTLE TIPS   1. It is never about the destination. Always about the journey. I've found this to be deeply true. If we can enjoy the journey, the destination becomes wherever we are at all times. The destination never lasts forever, yet the journey is infinitely present. If we can imagine this, we can create it.   2. In the blink of an eye, emotions will fly. Notice how the face of the tiniest changes drastically from photo one to photo two. If we can accept this, chaos feels so much lighter. This is normal and expected. This is normal and expected. Repeat after me next time your toddler flings themselves on the ground, the other passenger gives you a look, or your preteen rolls their eyes. “This is normal and expected.”   3. Forgiveness & self-compassion are key. We may do things or say things we are not proud of while our littles are jumping out of their seats, touching the airport bathroom floors, and creating waterfalls of French fries and applesauce. The same goes for our spouse. As parents, we sometimes forget we are on the same team and experience fits of emotions while exchanging uncalculated words. This is normal. Accept it. Give yourself what you need in the moment. Forgive everyone. Move forward.   4. GIVE EVERYONE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT! We never know what may have happened to them earlier that day or week. We do not know the hardships they carry nor the emotions they feel. If you can't do this, come talk to me.   5. Carry bags of skittles to hand out to all who help you along the way. The airline staff will love you. Friendships will be made.
