Have you had an experience that impacted you so much that you were compelled to take action, to make a shift in your life, business, or career? “Compelled to take action” is one of the core stories you can use to frame a talk (others we teach include crisis of confidence, paradigm shift, pin drop, and more). This is precisely what happened to my guest Dr. Nicole Rochester. Nicole was inspired to start her company, Your GPS Doc, after caring for her late father and witnessing the complicated healthcare system from the other side of the stethoscope. Not only has Nicole channeled her advocacy work into her business, but she also does a lot of speaking engagements and panels. Nicole was on this podcast way back in December 2018 (episode 98) when we did an on-air coaching call to help her take her personal story and universalize it. She did exactly that, which led to her TEDx talk in 2019! In this episode, Nicole and I talk about: What she learned from that on-air coaching call How she prepared for her TEDx talk Why she decided to leave her career as a physician and start her own business The mindset challenges she's faced and how she's overcome them What's next for Nicole as she scales her business and impact This episode is part of our new podcast series called Use Your Voice. Every Woman Has a Healthcare StoryHave you ever had a situation where your voice was ignored, and a negative health outcome resulted? 100% of women I have talked to say 'yes...and let me tell you a story'. Usually, when I ask this question there is an expression and laugh. Universally, women all respond the same way.Take a story like Laura's. I met Laura if you can imagine, trying to solve my own health issue. I was in terrible pain. Doctors were telling me it was all "part of menopause and in a few years I would be through it". I looked for alternative therapies and tried cryotherapy, a freezing technique to dull the incredible pain I had. That is where I met Laura. In my Midwest friendly usual way, we got to talking and I asked her if she had ever experienced a doctor not listening to her.Her story is so incredible. And yet...it is not. You see, there are stories like Laura's out there and women aren't sharing, don't know what to do and are having negative outcomes. Even death.Laura was having terrible pain in her abdomen. She went to the doctor who told her she was depressed. She expressed that no, she wasn't depressed, she was in severe pain. The doctor discounted her. Wanted to prescribe anti-depressants and send her on her way. The pain continued until it got so bad, Laura went to a friend who was a general surgeon. She told him she needed to fix whatever was happening and it resulted in surgery. The outcome? Laura had a hernia that passed through a hole and destroyed 85% of her esophagus was lost. She cannot eat like a normal person. Her quality life was changed forever because she was dismissed. Worse the outcome could have been fatal. I am happy to say I recently saw Laura again and she continues to be a positive person, looking for ways to take care of herself with yoga. The reality is women have complex health needs beyond going to an OBGYN and there are not screenings for things like lung cancer and other diseases. Our health is put into a category, often times we are told we are depressed, or imagining the illness. What happens to the millions of women who don't know how to navigate the system, who need healthcare and aren't able to qualify for clinical trials or other treatments? We can do better. We must do better. You may be thinking of a situation about yourself or as a caregiver when you needed care, and it didn't happen. The burden of care might be falling on your shoulders, and you have pushed your own health needs to the aside. Perhaps you have an aging parent who has dementia or Alzheimer's, or young children who need your focus. Whatever your situation, your health matters. It can be difficult to find support and a community who will lift you up.Have you had something similar happen to you or a loved one? I can say that my career of working in healthcare helped me to know a lot about a lot of things. As a determined mother and advocate I will not stop until my daughter is back to a thriving young woman. In a recent discussion with Dr. Nicole T. Rochester, I shared how I started "dressing up" to go to the doctor's offices as if I was in a business meeting, so that my daughter's health would be taken seriously. Health equity is essential in providing quality healthcare to all individuals regardless of background. However, even in the modern healthcare system, gender and racial biases still influence health outcomes. In today's episode, host Natalie Benamou is joined by Dr. Nicole Rochester as she talks about her advocacy of promoting greater equity in the healthcare world. Dr. Rochester is the founder of Your GPS Doc, which aims to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. Dr. Rochester also shares her experience as a caregiver for her father and how it transformed the work she is doing today. She created the GPS System to help patients and caregivers advocate for themselves. The GPS System:When preparing to have a conversation with your doctor, arm yourself with these your voices can be heard:G – Gather informationP – Position yourself as an expertS – Speak upDoing all these, you or your family members can show up more confidently in healthcare settings, make better choices, and get appropriate care. Dr. Rochester also touches on the Serena Williams story. Williams was diagnosed with blood clots in her lungs in 2010, and medical professionals also found an abdominal hematoma. After giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017, she began to lose feeling in her legs. The the hospital staff was initially dismissive, but after insisting on getting tests done, it was determined that she needed immediate surgery. Statistics show that women of color are not receiving healthcare and dying 3-4x more from childbirth than other ethnicities. What you can do: Advocate for yourself. You may have had an experience, a situation, a life event that caused you to change how you looked at the world or led to a new understanding of how something is wrong and needs to be changed. Your personal story can have a powerful impact on an audience. But, for it to spark a movement, to cause others to change, to cause systems to change, you need to expand your personal story into a universal message. This is especially true for TEDx talks and keynotes. I had posted in the Speaking Your Brand Facebook group about a month ago looking for some willing participants to do on-air coaching calls. (Not a member? Join for free.) My guest today, Dr. Nicole Rochester, sent me an email with her idea for a TEDx talk and I loved it. Nicole is a physician (pediatrician by training) who left clinical medicine a year ago to launch a health advocacy and consulting company. You’ll hear in this episode what prompted her to start her company and how that has led to her idea for a TEDx talk. It was a pleasure talking with Nicole and you’ll hear the process we went through to take her personal story and expand it into a universal message. We come up with a really clear spine for her talk - and a single word that serves as a powerful metaphor for the change she wants to see and how it can happen. About My Guest: Dr. Nicole T. Rochester is a board-certified pediatrician, Clinical Assistant Professor, and the CEO of Your GPS Doc, LLC, an innovative company that helps aging individuals, those with chronic illnesses, and their family caregivers navigate the healthcare system through education, empowerment, advocacy, speaking, and consulting. While helping to care for her late father, who had multiple chronic illnesses including dementia, Dr. Rochester witnessed the disjointed healthcare system from the other side of the stethoscope and gained invaluable insight into the plight of patients and their caregivers. On many occasions, it was only because of her medical expertise that her father received the care he needed and deserved. She realizes that most patients and families do not have access to this “inside knowledge” and has made it her personal mission to make this information widely available.
