Dr. Erkeda is joined by Dr. Dana Corriel, she is an internist by training as well as a successful entrepreneur. As a medical practitioner who's taken the traditional route to where she is now, Dr. Corriel is now devoted to using her business skills to help promote the autonomy of doctors and practitioners. She's already launched her own venture called SoMeDocs to help medical students and seasoned doctors promote themselves and their areas of expertise.   [00:23] Introduction of Dr. Corriel [02:13] About SoMeDocs [07:13] Essentials for Social Media Awareness [12:16] About Medical Branding [14:14] Opportunities for SoMeDocs [16:09] Desired Changes in Healthcare   The Power of Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurial skills are underrated skills acquired in the medical field. A lot of students and experts neglect the entrepreneurial side of being in the medical field. While it is one achievement to be a professional, there is also the factor of gaining clients or patients that avail your services. For Dr. Corriel, her goal is to ensure that medical services are marketed properly to potential patients and clients. It's an underlying skill that she wishes a lot of practitioners would acquire in order for them to have a better grasp into the field, whether it's  inside their 9 to 5 job at the hospital or on their off days at home.   Non-Traditional Practice Circling back on grasping ways to expand a professional's medical expertise, the high impact of social media in this day and age has converted the platform for service-curated avenues. Dr. Corriel's SoMeDoc platform has allowed medical experts to promote themselves and properly market themselves for patients who seek advice or guidance online. For the students or even professionals who may take this route, some essentials include the knowledge of the market, the “out-of-the-box” perspective, and building your own space. It is also worth noting that branding plays a crucial role when you do a more social media approach to your practices.   You can reach Dr. Corriel through her website. “One person can't make a difference, but many can. And so what I'm doing is I'm trying to not only give doctors a voice, but I'm trying to give them the fuel they need to feel empowered to continue building up their brand,” explains Dana Corriel, MD. Dana is the founder and CEO of SoMeDocs, a social media hub for physicians to get recognized and hired for their talents outside of healthcare through mediums like podcasting, writing, speaking, educating, and coaching. She is a former board certified internist who realized that while she could not fix things in the healthcare system alone,  having a network of colleagues could make all the difference in the world.    Healthcare workers often work within an overarching organization and do not get as recognized for their individual talents. If they shift hospitals or careers, their reputation may not follow them since it is strictly attached to the organization. Through social media marketing, physicians can make a name for themselves as individuals by creating content and building a brand that they can take with them into any new job. When doctors recognize their talents and have the opportunity to foster them, it can lead to amazing opportunities working in fields outside of healthcare.   Tune into this week's episode of The Catalyst to learn more about SoMeDocs, why social media marketing is so important for physicians, and what types of side gigs doctors can excel in with their current expertise and talents.    Quotes • “One person can't make a difference, but many can. And so what I'm doing is I'm trying to give doctors not only a voice, but I'm trying to give them amplification fuel, so that they can feel empowered, and they can continue to build up their brand. So all of us can individually make a difference.” (7:12-7:34 | Dana) • “You're a representative of the system, but you're still an individual.” (10:55-10:58 | Dana)  • “I am for physician individuality. The health experts themselves need to create content and take that content with them where they go. And they need to consider themselves as individuals or individual micro celebrities that then take all of the branding and the content that they've built, and they take it with them to the next job.” (11:19-11:42 | Dana) • “Opportunities were coming my way at the beginning, like heavily coming my way. At which point I said, Well, I not only can't do this myself, but why don't they come to my colleagues? Let me make it easier for them to get to my colleagues by building a categorized website that's beautiful, but that splits us up according to our niches and our specialties, where we practice, etc, etc.” (13:38-14:01 | Dana) • “I think physicians not only are multitalented, I think they don't always recognize that they have talents in different things. And it takes this newfound discovery that we should be doing other things in today's world because healthcare isn't perfect to recognize that you have a talent in something.” (17:40-17:59 | Dana)   Links Doctors of Social Website: www.doctorsonsocialmedia.com Dr. Dana Corriel Website:  www.drcorriel.com Connect with Lara:  Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Trying to figure out how the digital world fits into your private practice can seem very overwhelming. Today, I had a great conversation with Dr. Dana Corriel, a board certified internist, entrepreneur, digital stratgeist and the founder of doctorsonsocialmedia.com to get her insights. Here are some of the key points we discussed: Social Media is Media. It's a form of advertising. Don't think about it as "Social"Whatever content you put into the digital space represents you and your brandYour priority is the prime real estate you own--your websiteMake your website uniqueProvide content geared to the audience you want to read itYou can re-purpose content from your website Post it on one of the social media channels--Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, etc.Be consistentEstablish yourself as an expertPublish articles on doctorsonsocialmedia.com and other sites so that you are identified as an expert in your fieldYou never know who will see your content--patients, referral sources, others.Use social media to drive people back to your website.People may not find you on social media but your patients and referral sources will definitely check out your website before coming to see you or referring patients.Dana Corriel, MD, is a board certified internist, entrepreneur & digital stratgeist. She is the founder of DoctorsonSocialMedia.com, an online platform that functions as a mix of media outlet, marketplace, & talent agency for “medical brains”, serving both a physicians and public audience. Her company has helped numerous physician influencers and innovative new healthcare businesses grow, thanks to its communities and networking power. It’s just another tool that needs to be used correctly. As surgeons, we’re very familiar with taking risks. The key is to understand the risk, its benefits and alternatives, and then make an informed decision. Social media is here and it’s here to stay. Physicians who aren’t using it are missing out on potential patients, speaking engagements, and other opportunities to leverage their intellectual property. You need to decide for yourself - what is your reason for engaging in social media? And it’s OK if you don’t have an answer right away! But this question will help inform how you approach social media. What does Dana suggest we do to integrate social media into our practices?Suggestion 1 - No matter what stage you are in your career, you can use social media to enrich your practice and leverage what you do know.Suggestion 2 - No matter how much you think you know (or don’t know) about social media, that is exactly where you should start to build your social presence. Most importantly, start practicing to build or grow your social media brand and mission! Chase DiMarco talks to Dr. Dana Corriel, a physician, entrepreneur, and founder of SoMeDocs: Doctors On Social Media. We cover changing paradigms regarding social media in the medical field. General Social Media Guidelines for Medical Students Social media is a powerful tool of communication if leveraged in the right way. However, medical students should do this cautiously because we are steeped in cancel culture. This means that if a medical student says something unethical, everything that they say after that may be affected. Attendings have it a bit easier because they are already established. Just like magazines curate their content, medical students should curate the content that they post on social media to serve their personal and professional goals.  Factfulness in Advocacy on Social Media In an attempt to advocate for a cause or to express thoughts important to them, people tend to share posts that they have not fact-checked, or that they have not fully thought about. Social media can become toxic when we are forced to share posts on a topic, unless we are willing to risk our reputations being smeared. We must not succumb to the pressure of the herd, and be willing to think through topics for ourselves. Individualized takes on issues are very valuable. The Importance of Branding and Marketing Often, people who do not prioritize fact-checking end up as the most popular influencers. This is because they might be excellent at branding and marketing. Dr. Corriel  is passionate about enabling physicians and medical students— people who have the training to base their claims on facts and science — to in turn become excellent at branding and marketing. Whilst people do respect a medical degree, on social media, branding and marketing can hold more clout. Choosing Social Media Platforms to Use Different social media platforms — LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter — can be suitable depending on a medical student or physician’s target audience, and what they themselves enjoy. For example, if a medical student or physician is excellent at making videos, YouTube can be a great option. If a medical student or physician is skilled at consistently writing short Twitter posts, and thrive in the often argumentative environment of Twitter, then they can choose Twitter! They should not choose a platform that increases their anxiety, or that they hate. If they are looking for some hand-holding to engage more in social media, then they should consider reaching out to Dr. Corriel , who takes guest moderators for the SoMeDocs Twitter chat every week, and provides lots of guidance. On this episode we talk about social media with Dana Corriel MD, an internal medicine physician and creator of the SoMeDocs group. She recently left the practice of medicine to help physicians develop their online presence. Her goal is to help empower physicians reach their patients, a broader audience, and develop their brand and yet balance it with responsibilities as professionals, employees, etc. We talked about why she left medicine to pursue this opportunity. Dr. Corriel runs master classes for physicians interested in improving or developing their presence. I am going to be a teacher in one of the upcoming courses (in Aug 2020) for those who want to start a podcast. If you are interested, here is the link. Note this episode was recorded just prior to the Covid shutdowns in March 2020 and yet is timely because we just saw the power of physician social media this week when the journal of vascular surgery published and then retracted an article about social media posts of vascular surgery residents and fellows. That article was probably published to a very narrow audience, yet was able to be circulated widely because of twitter, facebook, instagram, etc. The article created a firestorm because of the techniques and judgements of its authors about the posts and calling pictures of female physicians in bathing suits potentially inappropriate but not the same of male physicians. Anyway there was a very quick and appropriate backlash which prompted retraction of the article and wide reassessment of gender biases in medicine in a way that traditional media could not have done. Despite the many advancements made in the field of medicine, there still seems to be a problem that has persisted over the years with minimal progress. It’s an issue that a lot of physicians aren’t aware of, but has greatly impacted the careers of their female colleagues – gender inequality. The healthcare industry seems to be stacked against women, where discrepancies exist and opportunities are not as available. Implicit and unconscious biases that contribute to this problem. 03:26 This week’s guest, SoMeDocs (https://doctorsonsocialmedia.com/) . Dr. Jain shares her personal stories on the challenges she has faced from medical school, to residency and as a practicing doctor that she mistakenly thought were unique to herself. 05:50 She also discusses the direct correlation between improvement of women’s healthcare as more female doctors advance as leaders in the field. 11:52 This is why it’s important that support is given to those who choose to go into medicine and are faced with particular concerns like maternity leave policies. 10:43 She also dives into social media and how it can be leveraged by women doctors. 24:00 In addition to educating and correcting a lot of misinformation that is rampant online, it can also be used in networking, collaborating and mentoring. It’s also a great way to advance your career as you can brand yourself and share research and studies that you have been a part of. 30:09 Dr. Jain (https://twitter.com/shikhajainmd) believes that by using social media to also spread awareness with regards the experiences of women in business will we be able to find interventions and solutions that can improve the healthcare industry overall. White Coat WisdomThis episode’s White Coat Wisdom is all about focusing on your own personal economy (https://www.sdtplanning.com/blog/focus-on-your-economy-during-crisis) rather than on the economy of the state or country you’re currently in. The past few weeks have put the world in a state of fear and confusion because of the COVID-19 pandemic, shaking our economic certainty and prosperity. While it’s okay to feel fear and panic, you can use this time to really look into your personal finances, so you can put your mind at ease. Take a look at the cash you have on-hand. Make a list of your typical spending and saving activities that you can temporarily put on hold so you can improve your cashflow. Identify any savings, investments or lines of credit that can help you as well, just in case you’ll need them. Even with the sense of uncertainty, it’s important to remember that we have already overcome great crises in the past, and we can certainly do that this time around. White Coat AchievementDespite experiencing trauma at a young age, this week’s White Coat Achievement awardee, has used this to become the passionate surgeon that he is today. Dr. Mike Malla, Chief Trauma Resident at Atrium Health, is able to empathize with those who are going through trauma, and understand the effects it may have on the loved ones surrounding the patient. He wrote an essay (https://atriumhealth.org/dailydose/2020/02/05/out-of-blood?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=organic_social) that was read at the 2020 Annual Scientific Assembly of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Traumas, impressing attendees and moving them to tears. The White Coat Wellness podcast by Spaugh Dameron Tenny highlights real-life stories from doctors and dentist to encourage and inspire listeners through discussions of professional successes and failures in addition to personal stories and financial wellness advice. Dr. Puri dives into appreciating the value and function of our feelings. This starts with banishing the idea that we have no control and recognizing that we DO have a self-healing potential. Often when we think of our body, we are breaking it up physically into the GI tract, or the brain, or the eye, or the heart, and we connect those together to form theories and treatment patterns we need to heal or treat disease. Scott Dikkers founded the world’s first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He’s served as The Onion’s owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century.  He led The Onion’s rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand.  He is also a New York Times best seller, and Peabody Award winner.  He documented his process for creating humor in his book, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, and next on the way, How to Write Funniest, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Scott offers other courses and free resources for comedy writers on the How to Write Funny website. He first dispels the myth that funny is innate an then we dive into how to be funny, starting with how to just dip our toes in the water.  He teaches us how to recover from a failed joke, how to joke about subjects that might seem taboo, how to work humor into our office visits and lectures.  Apparently, stand-up comics are jealous of our mundane topics.  He has a system of 11 funny filters, or types of humor of which all jokes are made, and which are the most and least appropriate for physicians. If you take nothing else away from this, the one rule to follow for comedy is to afflict the comfortable while comforting the afflicted.  Afflicting the comfortable might be out of our comfort zones, but comforting the afflicted is what we do! Social Media Guidance for Doctors and clinicians: pre-SCRIBE Are you aware of the social media guidance that exists to keep doctors, clinicians and patients safe? In this post, I show you various forms of formal social media guidance, why these are needed and explore my own easy to use version called pre-SCRIBE. Following recent articles in magazines like STAT that have commented why doctors shouldn't use social media, other reply articles by the organisation SoMeDocs and SELF have shown why doctors and clinicians should. But the important part is like with any tool to use social media safely.  Formal guidance exists like that from the General Medical Council (GMC), the Royal College of GPs (RCGP), the British Medical Association (BMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) to name a few.  These are detailed and less effective in the moment, so I would suggest using a quicker tool call pre-SCRIBE. pre-SCRIBE (before you write) stands for ShareConfidentialityRespectIdentityBoundariesEngage This episode explores all these aspects and I share how they can be useful, including other tips to help keep you safe when using social media as a doctor.Watch the episode here: https://youtu.be/vh1uOCFGkTk Links: STAT on social media restraint by doctors.: https://www.statnews.com/2019/06/10/doctors-social-media-restraint/ SELF article: https://www.self.com/story/social-media-doctors SoMeDocs: https://doctorsonsocialmedia.com/ Reply article by SoMeDocs: https://doctorsonsocialmedia.com/doctors-should-dive-into-the-social-media-waters-stat/ GMC: https://www.gmc-uk.org/ethical-guidance/ethical-guidance-for-doctors/doctors-use-of-social-media RCGP:https://www.rcgp.org.uk/social-media BMA:https://www.bma.org.uk/advice/employment/ethics/social-media-guidance-for-doctors AMA: https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/ethics/professionalism-use-social-media

On previous episodes, we’ve had specialists discuss what they think all physicians should know about the specialty, but this time, she told us what she wants all specialists to know about being a rural family medicine physician. Episode 026: Making Social Media Work for Docs with Dr. Corriel Social media is ubiquitous in our lives and doctors have a less than average presence within that sphere. The reasons are many but probably partly related to concerns about medical liability, their employers, and reputations as physicians. Dr. Dana Corriel set out to change that. She created the #SoMeDocs which encourages physicians to engage the world more and bring their unique perspectives to patients and the public through the use of social media.   In this conversation, Dr. Corriel and I cover a lot of the misgivings of physicians and why it is important to get our voices out in the conversation. She discusses her recommendations for branding, protecting your license, and how best to enter the fray. The advice is targeted towards physicians but the principles can apply to anyone interested in getting involved in social media and developing a brand name. I wish I had talked to her before I started this podcast.   Dr. Dana Corriel is the creator of #SoMeDocs and looks to create communities where physicians can engage the world better through social media. show notes Dr. Corriel: Dr. Dana Corriel's webite. #SoMeDocs Blog: A blog with collections of stories from doctors on social media - including mine!
