Memory Palaces: the science of mental time travel and the brain's GPS system | Lisa Giocomo (Re-release)

Today we are re-releasing an episode we did last year with Stanford neurobiologist Lisa Giocomo exploring the intersection of memory, navigation and the boundaries we create between ourselves and the world around us.This episode was inspired by the idea of memory palaces. The idea is simple: Take a place you're very familiar with, say the house you grew up in, and place information you want to remember in different locations within that space. When it's time to remember those things, you can mentally walk through that space and retrieve those items. This ancient technique reveals something very fundamental about how our brains work. It turns out that the same parts of the brain are responsible both for memory and for navigating through the world.Scientists are learning more and more about these systems and the connections between them, and it's revealing surprising insights about how we build the narrative of our lives, how we turn our environments into an internal model of who we are, and where we fit into the world.Join us to learn more about the neuroscience of space and memory. Before we get into this week's episode, we have a favor to ask. We're working to make this show even better, and we want to hear from you. We're in the process of gathering listener input and feedback. If you'd be willing to help out, send us a short note and we'll be in touch. As always, we are at neuronspodcast@stanford.eduLearn more:About Lisa Giocomo's researchAbout the story of Henry Molaison (patient H. M.), who lost the ability to form new memories after epilepsy treatment removed his hippocampus.About the 2014 Nobel Prize in medicine, awarded to John O'Keefe and to May-Britt and Edvard Moser (Giocomo's mentors) for their discovery of the GPS system of the brain.About Memory Palaces, a technique used since ancient times to enhance memory using mental maps.Episode CreditsThis episode was produced by Michael Osborne at 14th Street Studios, with production assistance by Morgan Honaker. Our logo is by Aimee Garza. The show is hosted by Nicholas Weiler at Stanford's Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. Send us a text! Thanks for listening! If you're enjoying our show, please take a moment to give us a review on your podcast app of choice and share this episode with your friends.

Dr. Rochester is the founder of Your GPS Doc, which aims to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. Dr. Rochester also shares her experience as a caregiver for her father and how it transformed the work she is doing today. She created the GPS System to help patients and caregivers advocate for themselves. The GPS System:When preparing to have a conversation with your doctor, arm yourself with these your voices can be heard:G – Gather informationP – Position yourself as an expertS – Speak upDoing all these, you or your family members can show up more confidently in healthcare settings, make better choices, and get appropriate care. Dr. Rochester also touches on the Serena Williams story. Williams was diagnosed with blood clots in her lungs in 2010, and medical professionals also found an abdominal hematoma. After giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017, she began to lose feeling in her legs. The the hospital staff was initially dismissive, but after insisting on getting tests done, it was determined that she needed immediate surgery. Statistics show that women of color are not receiving healthcare and dying 3-4x more from childbirth than other ethnicities. What you can do: Advocate for yourself. Business Is Human Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2022 30:17

Jason Krantz started his first company in 2000, which was an amazing year to found a business followed by 3 very tough years for early-stage businesses. That environment forced Jason to build a capital efficient, bootstrapped business from day 1. When considering his 2nd act, Jason identified 3 factors that he felt would reshape the healthcare industry:   An explosion of data as organizations adopted electronic health record systems for the first time. The passing of the affordable care act. Tremendous market consolidation.   Jason decided Definitive Healthcare would be the GPS system for the healthcare universe. Definitive helps customers understand how all the organizations in the industry are related and how patients flow through the entire healthcare ecosystem.   Example - Definitive helps life science companies take new drugs to market in a more effective & efficient manner (lower time and cost).    Today Definitive has > $200M in ARR with plans to reach over $1bn over the next 5-7 years. After spending the last 12 years building data sets that are not available anywhere else and investing in data science to draw out detailed market insights from this data, Definitive also has an enviable moat as their product is incredibly difficult to replicate.    Jason joins Scott Britton and Andrei Newman on the Built By Humans podcast. Here are some key takeaways from the conversation: Scaling a business is incredibly challenging. What is interesting is that the challenges are not necessarily related or transferable across stages. Your challenges with 100 employees are different from 200, and different from what you will face at 300. As a founder, you must constantly evolve to be effective in each phase.  Data businesses take a long time to build but the reward can be very large if you aggregate a dataset that is truly unique. Data companies must invest in having strategic (market insights) and tactical (contact info) data if they want to drive high user engagement. Founders who understand the power of capital efficiency and invest in it early will have a ton of leverage in future fundraising conversations.   It is quite common for companies to drastically underestimate the size of their market. It takes time and effort to properly identify and carve out your addressable market.

"The Universe does not know if the vibration you are offering is because of what you are imagining, or because of what you are observing. In either case, it is responding. Where emotion comes in is that emotion is your guidance or your response to your vibration. Your emotion does not create. Emotion is your indicator of what you are already creating. As you think, you vibrate. And it is your vibrational offering that equals your point of attraction. So it's always a match. What you are thinking and what is coming back to you is always a vibrational match. The emotion (your Guidance System) is telling you what's coming." -Abraham Hicks My name is Alleah and I have been an avid Law of Attraction practitioner and Abraham Hicks fan since 2011. Some of the best entrepreneurs are self made entrepreneurs who made it through hard work and persistence, entrepreneurs such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and Steve Jobs.. One such Irish entrepreneur is Joseph Costello who is also one of Irelands top business mentors. Ronan talks to Joseph about entrepreneurship and more. Joseph talks about his background, how he grew his limousine business, how he expanded himself as an individual, the paradigm, the importance of happiness, the law of gestation, and why life is a journey. Joseph also talks about how he handles his mentoring, Napoleon Hill, decision making, tweaking your mind and brain, going into panic mode, asking the right questions, how he was recently named as best innovative business mentor, and the best advice he would give. More about Joseph Costello: Joseph Costello grew up in Bohernabreena, West Dublin and left school at the age of 15. He went straight into work in a local coal yard until the age of 18 when he began working with his father in the local council. He stayed in that role for several years but at the age of 23 he began what he refers to as a “a path of self-destruct” when he suffered from a mental breakdown and began to question where he was going in life. It was during this time the opportunity came about for Joe to purchase a limousine which a friend was selling, he saw an opportunity and went for it. In 2008, he expanded his fleet and had 5 limousines, this grew to 31 in 2013. In 2013, he also purchased his first commercial property which subsequently led to another substantial purchase of a couple of thousand square feet in 2016 and led to over 50 tenants. He currently has a planning application in review for over 1,100 properties in West Dublin. In terms of personal self-development, he notes a key defining moment on his journey which occurred when he saw a TV documentary on Bob Proctor and the power of the mind. This sparked his interest in self-development and he began partaking in various courses associated with psychology and hypnosis. He was at an event when an opportunity presented itself to meet Bob Proctor - having studied his material, Joe was lucky enough to have made a good connection with Bob who advised him in all aspects of his life and Joe then went from studying with Bob to now being a consultant - one of his top global consultant worldwide with clients based all around the world. He was recently awarded “Best Innovative Business Mentor” (Irish Enterprise Awards) and listed in the Top 10 Business Mentors in Dublin (Influence + Digest). Whilst his business has grown substantially in the last 20 years, his path of self-development and performance mentor has led him to guide other business owners and people looking for guidance on a path of personal growth and success - he is committing to helping others reach their true potential through the same principles which he has applied to his life which has led to his self-made millionaire status with what he refers to as “little or no education”.

Join me and my guest Jen Shultz, Founder of The Non-Nine-to-Five as we talk about her personal story on how she transitioned from working nine-to-five to shifting her mindset and doing what she knew she was made for. When Jen left her job as a teacher, she knew she wasn’t meant to work in another school. In this episode, Jen shares why intuition is important and what she believes hold people back from truly going for what they love. Make sure to tune in with us because there is a ton to take away.In this episode you will learn:· Being a teacher in New York, the anxieties, the misalignments, and the realization.· Practice makes progress – not perfection.· The biggest obstacles in life are our own limiting beliefs.· The 6-Step Process to leaving the Nine-to-Five way: A non-chronological order guide· Your intuition is totally connected to your positive energy.Jen Shultz’ Bio:In 2010 I was a first grade teacher at a highly acclaimed and rapidly growing charter school in NYC, I had health benefits, I was living in an exciting neighborhood in Manhattan BUT I was completely miserable. I found myself massively depressed, anxiety ridden, and felt like a big loser who was purposeless and confused. In December of that year however, I reached a point where the pain of staying at my job far exceeded the fear of leaving. I walked in one morning and gave my 2-week notice. When I share this story many people say to me, “Wow that was brave. That was courageous.” But bravery was so far from the truth of what I REALLY felt underneath it all. I felt like a failure who had just let everyone down, especially my students and the staff who needed me. However, way down deep within my heart I knew I needed to leave and begin to carve my own path. After I quit I knew I was destined to never work for an employer again BUT where was I meant to go and who was I meant to be?My intuition told me to continue teaching but how would I do that if I wasn’t working directly for a school? It made no sense. I found myself sitting in a local Starbucks day in and day out, emailing and calling as many people as I could letting them know I was providing educational services outside of the typical classroom setting. Within 3 months of leaving my full time job, my first business Teacher on the Go was born.Since 2013 I have dedicated myself to educating an coaching Non-Nine-to-Fivers who KNOW just like I did that they are meant to be independently employed doing purposeful work in the world, generating money on their own terms using their innate talents and strengths.Join Jen Shultz, Founder of The Non-Nine-to-Five™ for a very special end of year Masterclass where she will teach you how to fully commit to your Non-Nine-to-Five Purpose in just 2 key steps so you can powerfully enter 2021.Your Masterclass details:WHEN: Friday, December 11th 11:00am CENTRAL – 2:00pm CENTRAL (*deadline to register is Monday, December 7th 11:59pm)WHERE: Private Virtual Classroom (You will receive the link prior to class)WHAT: Master Your Inner GPS: How to Commit to Your Non-9-5 Purpose (in just 2 key steps!) - Jen will be teaching in-depth curriculum that has not been shared before that will have you mastering your own unique inner GPS System and Commit FULLY to your Non-Nine-to-Five Purpose.YOUR MASTERCLASS TUITION:· 1 Payment of $97 OR· 1 Payment of $97 AND bring a friend for FREE. North Korean newspaper "Daily NK" quoted a source stating the explosion appeared to be from a gas leak from a home’s liquid gasoline tank, and the fires spread to dozens of nearby houses. The source said that the serial fire caused by the gas explosion burned residential houses for about an hour, and the entire multi-family community was completely scorched in the explosion. Given the restrictive nature of reporting in North Korea, the true cause and scale of the explosion is still unknown. And the typhoon is now hitting the city of Shanghai, where heavy rains have disrupted traffic, and led to pooling of water up to nearly four feet deep. Winds were estimated at around 85 miles per hour at the typhoon’s epicenter. More than 600 flights in Shanghai were disrupted, and travel by train, ferry, and bus has also been disrupted. Guest Noelle Agape TV host of The Infinite Wellness Show, health and wellness counselor, transformational coach, certified in Quantum Energy Medicine, certified in NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming, knowledgeable about Quantum Physics and Deepak Chopra, certified Energy Healer and international speaker discusses with host Carol the tools of navigating our internal GPS. How many of you have used the word GPS spiritually? What does it mean to you? How can we navigate our GPS so that we will not get stuck with our internal obstacles? How can our internal GPS pave our road and get to our yellow brick road of our life's journey? Is our spiritual GPS our inner voice, our gut, the voice of our heart, or our soul? Do our angels speak to us or are the signs or synchronicity there for us to follow? Noelle believes that our GPS is our guiding tool to connect to our higher self. She believes that it is our highest power tool, the bond that we have with the Creator or the Divine. How does divine intervention play into this? Is it part of our GPS? What should we do when we are in the crossroads of life? Noelle tells Carol that the universe speaks to us every day. It is a matter of tapping into our intuition without any ego or negative thoughts or feelings. The key is to quiet the mind and heart to receive our highest direction for our lives. Do you believe that we are always co creating with the Creator. Is the bond a dance with the same rhythm and beat. What is the difference between a sacred contract and soul contract? Can we become aware to it? How does the soul direct us? Do you ever speak to your soul? Noelle Agape believes that we are here to expand. How does freedom or courage play into this? Noelle believes that the universe is abundant and that we are the highest vibration. Carol believes that our spiritual partner is the Creator and that the signs or our internal GPS leads us to our highest purpose and to the depth of our wisdom. Noelle Agape speaks with such passion on this topic and she conveys her messages to many retreats all over the world! It's The Matter of the Heart with guest Noelle Agape and host Carol Olivia.

In this episode, we talk about the RV accessory that we probably complain about the most but also depend upon to get where we are going - the GPS navigation system. We talk to a top government GPS expert this week who explains how GPS works; how accurate and reliable it is, or isn't; what system – the one in the dashboard or the one on your smartphone or tablet - is most accurate and what to do when it is not accurate. Also some spring cleaning ideas for your traveling tech, a great off the beaten path report from New Mexico, RV tips and your questions. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #185 March 28, 2018 of Roadtreking - The RV Podcast: WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK [spp-timestamp time="2:05"] Happy Easter everyone!  It's Spring Break and Easter Vacation time for much of North America this week and campgrounds are experiencing their first major rush of the 2018 camping season. We're in Florida at our Emerald Coast Location on the Gulf of Mexico again after a great visit last week to Texas. And the first of two videos we did on that trip will go live tomorrow – Thursday April 29 – on our RV Lifestyle Channel on YouTube. It's about our trip to Waco and all the fun we had there. Two of our three kids and five of our eight grandkids will be joining us over the weekend here at the beach to celebrate Easter so we're looking forward to some fun family time. Then we hit the road again for what promises to be perhaps our busiest travel season ever. Though we've been busy all year so far. In fact we travel somewhere in our RV every month. Now…here are the top RV related stories that have interested us this week…. Rangers at Arizona's Saguaro National Park using microchips to thwart thieves  So many people are taking home a piece of Arizona's Saguaro National Park's famous saguaro cactus that rangers have started the unusual practice of micro chipping them. Yes, you read that right. Microchips are being inserted into the iconic plant that can grow up to 40 feet tall and live 200 years because selling them has become a lucrative market that is hurting the national park. Ohio buys 60,000 acres to develop new park, complete with camping We always like seeing stories about new state parks. Ohio announced its plans to buy 60,000 acres of privately owned land in the southeastern part of the state and turn it into the Jesse Owens State Park and Wildlife Area, complete with camping. The rolling hills and lake-specked land is owned by American Electric Power and was once mined for coal. In recent years the electric company allowed public use of the land, and a recent story we will link to in the shownotes presents an interesting picture of how one state is trying to preserve undeveloped land for future generations. Night sky educational programs to get even better at national parks Enjoy viewing the night sky in the nation's national parks? Your experience may be even a bit better this summer. The University of Texas-Austin's McDonald Observatory is creating a training program for park rangers to help them develop better night sky experiences for visitors. Your internal GPS System is your discernment. In other words, the vibes that you are picking up. Discernment is your ability to judge well. Your perception of something in an attempt to better understand something on a deeper level. Being able to comprehend the deeper part of something. I believe we all have a certain level of discernment and that it is something that we've always had with us. This discernment is that internal GPS system that directs us. Sometimes you walk into a room and your insides start to twist and turn and flip-flop and your nerves start to go off. Or, sometimes you are around certain people and your energy just drains, your spirits get low and you get down. Your internal GPS is telling you something about that place and about those people and warning signs are going off in your body. Stop ignoring this. Pay attention to yourself and what the universe is trying to tell you. One of the things that I've always made an effort to be is someone that can lose everything and then turn around and get it all back. I say that because I believe that a truly wealthy man isn't wealthy because of his money or the value of his possessions. He's wealthy because of who he is. My guest today Tony Dada is one of those people. At his lowest point Tony found himself homeless with nothing to his name. It was also during this time that Tony began what he calls "His Great Experiment". With nothing left to lose he also lost his sense of fear. With time he slowly began to see the great opportunity that he had in front of him...the opportunity to focus on developing himself into a better person and creating the life that he' d always dreamed of. Tony created a new definition of success for himself, one that was no longer based on society's typical definition of success. He instead focused his attention on creating a legacy by making a difference and choosing to empower the people of his community. Since that time Tony has used his time and talents to transform many of London's economically disadvantaged. Today Tony is a social entrepreneur and an award-winning author who has developed a proven strategy for living an empowered life based on his 7 foundational principals that he calls "The GPS System", which stands for Growing Personal Success. Tony is one of the most sought after empowerment coaches in the United Kingdom and in 2012 he received an award for Outstanding Contribution from the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. If you've been trying to figure out how to identify your natural talents, get in alignment with your purpose and create powerful results without resistance then you definitely want to listen to this conversation. During this interview we discussed... Why our existence is more spiritual than physical How to accelerate mental maturity The importance of mentorship Relationships The ONE idea that you must understand before you're able to create money Why being a nice person can often be a bad thing The lessons that he learned from losing everything Show Links: The Business Money And You Conference TonyDADA.com

Nate Turner – Show Notes     Nate Turner is a father, entrepreneur and motivational speaker. He’s the author of “Raising Supaman” and the upcoming book “Stop The Bus: A Critique of and Counsel for America’s Educational System.” Nate is also the creator of a program called The GPS, where he teaches parents on how to engage and become zealous advocates for their children.    For his first book, Nate published a collection of letters he wrote his son from ages two to 16. He says his motivation for doing this was the poor relationship he had with his father.     “When I realized I was going to be a parent, one of the things I wanted to make sure I did was that I didn’t mess up my relationship with my son”     The cards and letters Nate wrote helped his son start reading shortly after he turned three years old.     “They were actually more than notes. I mean they’re life lessons.”     Being part of a race that makes up a small segment of fathers is what makes Nate a Diversity Dad, as well his opinions and perspectives on fatherhood. Nate also says the challenges he’s overcome as a father contributes to him being a Diversity Dad.     “(Diversity) is so ambiguous and means so much to so many different people”     Watching his son grow up to be the man he’s become is one of the things that has Nate most excited about being a dad. His son finished in the top 1% for SAT scores, as well as being an All-American in track.     “There’s no one thing I’m most excited about. Just the journey itself has been phenomenal.”     He says one of the proudest moments he’s had as a dad is when his son ran a track meet at 8 years old, and won. After the race, he ran off the track and hopped into Nate’s arms.     “My proudest moment, I suppose, is just him being born and having the opportunity to be a father”     Nate developed an intricate study system based on neuroscience and other things such as nutrition, to help his son succeed.    “I’ve always felt responsible for his success and I’ve always felt to blame for his failure”    He says it’s his role to make sure his son has the right tools to navigate life.    “Whenever he needs me to help him avoid a pitfall or minefield, that’s what I do”     With his GPS System, Nate does a process called “backward design.” He asks parents a first set of questions involving what their hopes and dreams are for their children, and then ones involved parent’s engagement.  This will determine a two-part score, with a probability index of how likely it is their children will reach their goals.     “Any score of less than 100%, we help the parent with a roadmap to help them get there”     His biggest obstacle has just been not being like his own father.    “I just worry about consistently being his father every day and the other stuff I just don’t worry about”     Nate believes that nothing will happen by accident. If you want a great relationship with your kids, you’ll have to plan for it. To do this himself, Nate wrote a pledge consisting of 10 things.     His one piece of advice to other parents is to just enjoy every single moment of the journey.     INTERVIEW LINKS:     www.
