We hear all the time that we should “reinvent” ourselves to stay relevant. Or that we should ignore or dismiss aspects of our careers that no longer seem to “fit” with what we're doing now. I'm not sure we can truly “reinvent” ourselves, nor should we. Instead, we should embrace how we evolve over time - and actually seek out ways to challenge ourselves to evolve! In this episode, Diane Diaz, our lead speaking coach, joins me for a lively and insightful conversation about the difference between reinvention and evolution. We explore why embracing your full self - quirks, career twists, and even those moments that feel “messy” - is essential for authenticity and personal branding. Diane shares how her Ironman journey continues to influence her life, even years later, and I reflect on bringing my tech background into Speaking Your Brand's evolution. You'll learn: Why “reinvention” might not be the right word (and why evolution feels more authentic) The importance of challenging yourself - even when it feels uncomfortable How to embrace all aspects of your past, from childhood passions to career pivots, to shape your personal brand What saying “yes” to unexpected opportunities (hello, comedy sets!) can do for your growth   This episode is full of personal stories and actionable takeaways to help you think about what's next for you. Whether it's launching a podcast, tackling public speaking, delivering a TEDx talk, or simply trying something new, it's never too late to evolve. This episode was filmed in one of the beautiful studios on the campus of Full Sail University, where Diane and I have been teaching business and marketing classes since 2009. Health equity is essential in providing quality healthcare to all individuals regardless of background. However, even in the modern healthcare system, gender and racial biases still influence health outcomes. In today's episode, host Natalie Benamou is joined by Dr. Nicole Rochester as she talks about her advocacy of promoting greater equity in the healthcare world. Dr. Rochester is the founder of Your GPS Doc, which aims to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. Dr. Rochester also shares her experience as a caregiver for her father and how it transformed the work she is doing today. She created the GPS System to help patients and caregivers advocate for themselves. The GPS System:When preparing to have a conversation with your doctor, arm yourself with these your voices can be heard:G – Gather informationP – Position yourself as an expertS – Speak upDoing all these, you or your family members can show up more confidently in healthcare settings, make better choices, and get appropriate care. After giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017, she began to lose feeling in her legs. The the hospital staff was initially dismissive, but after insisting on getting tests done, it was determined that she needed immediate surgery. SHOW NOTES In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a fellow physician, a woman, and the owner of the GPS Doc. She is a former family caregiver, an independent health advocate, a healthcare navigation expert, a speaker, a consultant, and an author. We are discussing the article- The Empathy Gap which tackles why we must stop ignoring the obvious. · How do we get our leaders to understand the value of improving emotional intelligence and resilience? · How can one be trauma-informed in interaction with others? · Why do we need to stop ignoring the obvious? These and many more await you in this week's special episode with Dr. Nicole Rochester, MD. A health equity consultant who launched health advocacy to help and guide others to understand and navigate the healthcare system. In this episode, she will discuss her article and how connecting with others is essential. Today, we will also learn how we can be trauma-informed when interacting with others. What is The Empathy Gap all about? The empathy gap explains why Black and Brown patients were disproportionately denied emergency medical care and hospital admission at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and why there is a long history of health and healthcare disparities for racially and ethnically minoritized individuals. The empathy gap illuminates the need for a more diverse workforce, not to check a box because we are more likely to demonstrate empathy when we see ourselves in others. Dr. Nicole wrote this after watching a documentary- The Color of Change, highlighting the disparate and inequitable care received by Black and Brown individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was compelled to what she had been through and was taken back to her experiences. The 90-second Encounter The 90-second Encounter is a term Dr. Nicole coined in her TEDxTalk and was inspired by her caregiving journey. It is about spending the first 90 seconds of every Encounter just engaging with patients humanly. It is beneficial for the patients and will feed the soul of physicians and other healthcare providers. Connecting also filled Dr. Nicole every day, as physicians also got burnout, and establishing this was like an antidote and built that therapeutic alliance. Tools to be more trauma-informed First, we must recognize and be aware of what is happening with the people around us because collegial interaction is also impactful. Second is the acceptance of condition such as personal condition and societal condition and how it shows up in the organization. Lastly is taking action because knowing without effort makes no difference. As to what is stated in a quote, "When we know better, we do better." There are obvious things that get talked about and not-so-obvious things that people will not discuss. Such as how everything is business and that most decisions are made around profitability. Leadership need to acknowledge the problem and takes innovative step to solve it. The tools mentioned above are part of skill building which is what we need to close the empathy gap. Until we re-examine our thoughts and be willing to be in another person's shoes, shift perspective, and take action, take the next step. Then we will not get anywhere, and we will be unable to close that empathy gap. About Dr. Nicole Rochester, MD Dr. Nicole Rochester is a Board-Certified pediatrician with over 20 years of experience practicing and teaching medicine. She is the founder and CEO of Your GPS Doc, LLC, an innovative company that elevates the voices of patients and family caregivers through private health advocacy services. Dr. Rochester was inspired to launch her company after caring for her late father and witnessing the healthcare system from the other side of the stethoscope. She realized that her medical knowledge, expertise, and influence allowed her to be a powerful advocate for her dad; many family caregivers need that advantage.
