Episode 233: The Art (and Science) of Women Navigating Healthcare

Episode 233 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.   Susan Salenger is here to talk about how women need to advocate for themselves for health care. She interviewed women for a book she wrote, and she discovered that women, in many ways, put themselves last and this needs to change. Women need to put themselves first and go to the doctor when they don't feel well. She found that many people are unprepared when going to the doctor. It is advisable to write a list of all of your symptoms and medications you take. Many people get anxious at doctor visits so if you have a list, it will keep you on track. In her research, she found that a lot of women leave the appointment not understanding what the doctor was telling them and that they are embarrassed to ask questions. The more information and questions that you have, the better equipped you will be. Susan gives tips for women when the appointment doesn't go as planned. Some of these tips include: emailing the doctor for follow up information, writing down what the doctor said so you can do your own research and get a second opinion from someone with different training.     Susan Salenger is the author and researcher behind SIDELINED: How Women Can Navigate A Broken Healthcare System. Sidelined examines the many ways in which some women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare. (Released, April 2022)   Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time inadvertently undermine their own care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don't feel well and worry that their doctor visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don't always comply with the doctor's instructions. Salenger's research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make.   Born and raised in Los Angeles, Susan attended UCLA to study English. After graduation, she worked alongside her husband Fred for 25 years at their production company, Salenger Films, which produced corporate training and development films distributed worldwide. Today, at age 81, Susan lives in Northern California to be near her incredible family which includes her two daughters, four grandchildren, a cat named Max and a dog named JD (Salenger). When she is not speaking about her book or spending time with family and friends, you will find Susan power lifting to stay in shape.    She can be found at: https://www.susansalenger.com/,  https://www.tiktok.com/@grandma.gains, https://www.instagram.com/susansalenger/, https://www.facebook.com/suesalenger/, https://twitter.com/susansalenger, https://www.linkedin.com/in/susan-salenger-a4a02716/, https://www.amazon.com/Sidelined-Women-Manage-Mismanage-Health/dp/1647424011/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=   Her book Sidelined explores the various hurdles women must jump to get the healthcare they want. It examines the many ways in which women have been conditioned not to act in their own best interest when it comes to their health.    It shines a light on the cultural history and gender bias in the medical community that have helped put women in this position. And it offers women practical advice to help them recognize these biases and better navigate the patient-doctor relationship.   You can purchase the book at: https://www.amazon.com/Sidelined-Women-Manage-Mismanage-Health/dp/1647424011/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr   Dr. Hammerstedt and her lifestyle coaching team can be found at www.wholisthealth.com and @wholisthealth on Facebook and Instagram as well as the Facebook group Midlife Wellness Collective. Episode 231 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.   Udo Erasmus is here to talk about total health. He first started looking into healthy oils, digestion, and the importance of eating greens. However, he discovered that everything affects health, and in that insight, he started to look at all components of human nature. He says that if you want optimum health, there are eight parts. The first part is internal awareness, this is a stillness practice in a safe place. When you can deeply, quietly and gently breathe, you will notice a calmness, contentment there. He then discusses the other elements of health, which are: peace and a flow of love, the shine of the love in the world, a positive mind, the body, a protective mind, your social group, and the natural environment. If you want total health, you need to be aware and nurture all eight.      The legendary Udo Erasmus is the co-founder of Udo's Choice line, which can be found in Whole Foods and other health food stores worldwide. Udo designed the machinery for making oils with health in mind and pioneered flax oil, a billion dollar industry. However, Udo walked a difficult path to become the man he is today. Being a child of war, Udo's life began with intense struggle. As an adult, he got pesticide poisoning in 1980, leaving doctors at a loss regarding treatment. Deciding to take his health into his own hands, Udo began researching, and his discoveries led him to a passion for finding the answers to life's big questions which would hopefully one day bring him and the world peace.   Today, Udo is an acclaimed speaker and author of many books, including the best-selling Fats That Heal Fats That Kill, which has sold over 250,000 copies. He teaches at events hosted by Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra, has keynoted an international brain health conference, and has traveled to over 30 countries to conduct thousands of live presentations, media interviews, and staff trainings impacting more than 25,000,000 lives with his message on oils, health, peace, nature, and human nature. Episode 230 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.   Udo Erasmus is here to talk about healthy oils. He describes our bodies as a major construction site. Some people say 98% of the time, the atoms in our bodies turn over and are removed and replaced every year. Our bodies need essential nutrients to be healthy. If you are not getting enough, your health will deteriorate, but you can reverse this. You need to be conscious of what you are bringing into your body. He became very interested in learning about how oils are made and discovered that the processing of oils was damaging the nutrients. He discusses how Omega 3 and Omega 6 are both essential to your body, but if you are getting one more than the other, it can be damaging, and you need a better ratio. If you have the right nutrients, your energy and skin will be better. He created oils with health in mind and with the right ratio of Omegas.    The legendary Udo Erasmus is the co-founder of Udo's Choice line, which can be found in Whole Foods and other health food stores worldwide. She says forget commitment, willpower, positive-thinking, mindset techniques, or better goal-setting. These approaches are a thing of the past. We were told to use our mind to fix our problems, but this is simply not the case. Current brain research proves that you are not in control of your choices. Instead, your decisions are the result of decision-making patterns that were created early in life and that continue to control your life. To take different actions, you need to change your patterns. That means no blame in your past, no shame in your future, and nothing to fix in your present. There are only patterns and patterns can be changed. She wrote an award-winning book that provides the necessary knowledge and step-by-step instructions to change any of your behaviors, actions, or beliefs – permanently – in less than six weeks.   Adele Spraggon is an award-winning author, thought leader, international trainer and a fearless speaker. As we get older, we have less REM and less deep sleep and more light sleep. We need all 4 stages of sleep and if you are not sleeping well, your mood can be affected. She recommends reserving the last hour of your day for yourself to slow your brain waves so you can sleep better. She suggests slowing your breath, meditation, taking a bath, listening to music, or journaling for better sleep. One practice that she discusses is using your five senses. Think of somewhere you want to be, somewhere where you are at rest, and what are five things you are seeing, four things you are feeling, three things you are hearing, two things you smell and one thing you can taste.   Valerie Cacho, MD, is an integrative sleep medicine specialist. She shares her successes and obstacles about balancing a career and being a mom. She believes her success is linked to understanding the importance of relationships with her clientele and coaches.    Mary Katherine Stahl is a busy mom, wife, and multi-business owner. She has a love for health and fitness and inspires others to be the best version of themselves. At the young age of 25, she started as a member at a Fit Body Boot Camp and it quickly became the best part of her day every day. At the time she was working in an operations role at a real estate firm, which did not provide any sense of purpose. She used that passion and energy she felt at boot camp to open her own location in August 2017.    In addition to owning two locations, in July 2020, MK took over a failing Fit Body Boot Camp and grew it by 4 times of where it started in less than 2 years.    Today she is not only passionate about helping her clients but also about providing her team with opportunities to grow. MK attributes a lot of her success to building culture and community within her business. She believes building strong relationships is the key to having a successful business and team.    MK grew her career and family together, two things that require a lot of time, something we can never seem to get enough of! Being a Mom is her most important job title, though balancing motherhood and work seems almost impossible these days. Episode 216 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.   Laurie Lewis is here today to discuss intermittent fasting. She is a certified coach who shares her personal story and clarifies many misunderstandings about intermittent fasting. She explains the first mistake is that people think it is a diet. It is a timing, an eating window, that is not for weight loss. By tuning into your personal goals and what feels good to you, you will discover what are your ideal fasting hours. She discusses how it is easier to make good food choices when in a fasted state. The best way to start is to decide when to close your eating window. By shrinking your eating window, you will start to look at the foods that make you feel good. Your body will start to use its own body fat for energy and will keep your Insulin low. Your body will learn to eat “window worthy” nutritious food and how much to eat and when to stop eating.    Certified coach, Laurie Lewis, has changed the lives of thousands through her coaching of Intermittent Fasting. Utilizing time-tested (and science-tested) principles, Laurie takes on individual clients as well as leading her group programs Live on Zoom. She helps determined, exasperated, busy people (who are tired of dieting!) from the United States to New Zealand to Ghana to Israel to Scotland.   Combining a 22-year personal study of nutrition (Health Coach Certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition) with her research and practice of Intermittent Fasting, Laurie supports clients and participants with a dream come true. Yes, it is possible to eat the foods you love and live your life feeling strong, vibrant, and lean!   Menopause and stubborn hormonal fat hit Laurie hard in 2012, causing her to suddenly gain 50 pounds. For years, she tried everything and none of the old tricks worked. She hit rock-bottom and almost resigned to the “fact” that she would keep getting heavier and feeling worse and worse forever. At a particularly despondent time in 2017, a video unexpectedly popped up which would turn the course of her life. She stayed up all night learning about Intermittent Fasting, and started that very next morning.   Within days of eating in this newfound pattern of time, the fog lifted and she felt awake and “like herself.” With health, strength, and slender weight restored – 50+ pounds lost. Now, at 59-years old, Laurie has turned her personal success into the premier thriving Intermittent Fasting coaching business. As a certified health coach (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) she combines her knowledge of nutrition with deep research and practice of Time Restricted Eating. Laurie guides her clients with a dream come true -- eat the foods you love and enjoy the rest of your life feeling vibrantly well.   Dr. Hammerstedt and her lifestyle coaching team can be found at www.wholisthealth.com and @wholisthealth on Facebook and Instagram as well as the Facebook group Curate Your Health. Episode 212 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.   David Greenwalt is here today to discuss how he helps people learn the truth about mental fitness, nutrition and movement. Obesity is at its highest level ever, with about 40 percent of U.S. adults considered obese. The cause of obesity, he believes, can be broken down into four drivers. One: biological drives, we are driven to calorie dense foods to avoid food scarcity that evolution has built in us. Two: habit condition automatic responses, we use food to change our mental state so that we feel relief, checked out and relaxed. Three: addiction to ultra-processed food.  And the fourth driver is our obese genetic environment. These are all external forces that promote obesity: fast food restaurants, proximity, convenience marts, access, opportunity for less activities, parental modeling, marketing, and government subsidies.   By becoming more aware of these factors, we can learn to implement strategies to have a different response.  Sometimes we need someone else to help us become aware of our subconscious behaviors. If we are aware and are able to catch the behavior as soon as it happens, we can begin to lay down a new healthier path. When you have the support and education, real strategies can win against the external factors and be able to put behaviors in place to lose the weight for the last time.   With us today is Certified Wellness Coach, fitness expert, and author David Greenwalt. A husband, father, former police officer, gym owner, competitive state-level bodybuilder, and powerlifter. In 1997, at age 32 and a body weight of 235 pounds, David discovered an evidence-based approach for getting off his own 50 excess pounds and keeping it off for 25 years and counting. By being more thoughtful and mindful with the way food made her feel, she was able to heal her gut health. She mentions that by paying attention to what her body needed, she was able to feel better, and what helps one person, may not help another.  Hally Brooke is the Founder & CEO of Live Nourished, she is a Certified Functional Medicine Nutrition Counselor, Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Fox 21 Fitness & Nutrition Expert, and a fierce industry advocate. Her self-education in nutrition and exercise began in 2014 when she battled and overcame her own serious GI issues including IBS and SIBO. Through her own process of finding wholeness, health and healing for herself, as well as her education and experience with her clients, Hally has learned that living a nourished life takes more than just “eating healthy” or working out. Hally teaches that “true health” is a blend of not only physical health, but also mental, emotional & spiritual wellbeing. Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Tina Koopersmith MD who gives a beautiful overview of who we are through our brain and our body. She discusses how our heart energy can be felt six feet away and if we have a positive energy field, people can feel it. Likewise, if you are in a negative environment, the heart rate is lower, and you can feel the negative energy. She talks about healing techniques that can heal the body. We are connected between our brain and our heart. And, by using techniques that play with your emotions and thoughts, you can gently move your emotions into a peaceful state.    Tina Koopersmith MD is a physician AND coach, a mom and a perpetual student. She is dedicated to modifying our health care system from one focused on illness and sickness to one devoted to prevention and wellness. For 30 years as a fertility specialist, she focused on bringing life to her patients and now she wants to focus on bringing her patients (and other humans) to life. She starts with the premise we all have the same parts and very similar DNA, and yet we all have different experiences and imprinting. Our unique signature means we are all wired to access pleasure in a slightly different fashion. Diversity is to be praised and celebrated. We need to nourish all 4 of our bodies: the mind body, the heart body, the physical body and the energetic body because we are ALL worthy of self-care, self-acceptance and self-love. Rachel Freiman is here today to discuss how to become MindStrong. Her aim is to educate women and to cut through all the conflicting information. She talks about stepping back, wiping the slate clean and starting to approach health and fitness as a life skill. It is important to understand what diets you tried, why it didn't work, be able to release the past, and start with a new skill base. It is basic human nature for our brain to fight back against change. It is all about baby steps and momentum. We are pleasure seekers, however, when we take baby steps and mentally celebrate it, all the feel good chemicals will be released and our brain will say that it feels good. This will begin to snowball and our brain will say let's do that again and what else can I do? Weight loss journey is full of ups and downs, when we can focus on the steps along the way, we don't have to worry about the end point. There is a three step process to building habits. Accountability is the first step which should not be seen as a weakness, it is what you need. Next, you form a habit through consistency. And finally there is a neuro connection as you repeat actions, this will become a habit.    Rachel Freiman is the CEO of MindStrong Fitness, www.MindStrongFitness.com, a lover of lifting heavy things up and down, and a coach passionate about helping others unleash their strongest, most empowered selves through education and mindset training. Rachel has more than fifteen years of classroom instruction and certifications in personal training, sports nutrition, and behavior modification. Dr. Faryal Michaud is a board certified internist and a palliative care physician that is here today to discuss How To Have a Better Conversation About Your Health. She believes there is a misunderstanding of what palliative care is. She describes this type of care as a layer of support to help through the bumpy road of an illness, and to help families be able to connect to services. The layer of support is different for every patient and their family. And, only if the bumpy road is too much, then hospice would get involved, but that is not the palliative care role.   She stresses the importance of understanding what the patient and family knows, and what it is that they want to do. She talks about the -Wish, Worry, Wonder Guide. This model can be explained by saying - I wish you could get better, then worry about the type of care that the patient can get and if they will improve, and then finally, wonder if we should have a conversation about this.    Dr. Faryal Michaud has been practicing inpatient palliative care medicine for the past 10 years which she believes is her true passion. Around the time of COVID, and having moved to Hawaii with her husband and two teenage daughters, she felt incredibly isolated and decided to start a podcast focusing on teaching patients and physicians how to have difficult conversations surrounding end of life issues. Her podcast, “Write Your Last Chapter” has been popular domestically and internationally, creating further evidence that this topic is both poorly understood and deeply needed.   She then decided to start “Physicians Living Intentionally” to focus on what matters as well as provide a space for poetry and reflection. In 2021 she started her business of life coaching for women physicians focusing on teaching how to live intentionally every day. As a certified mindfulness teacher, her program offers ongoing teachings by certified yoga, and mindfulness teachers, as well as group and one on one coaching. She also provides pro bono coaching for patients suffering from serious illness who are unable to afford her services.    She has created a simple 3 step guide to have difficult conversations that can be applied to clinicians as well as moms everywhere on her website: www.drfaryal.com. Tammie Chang, MD joins us today to discuss Kind Intentional Boundaries. Boundaries are a relatively new concept that were essentially introduced to the public in the 1990's, so they're not something our parents (for example) grew up with. As women, we were socialized not to talk back or complain and to be caretakers and givers, so this makes the concept of boundaries extra difficult (and potentially feel negative). Burnout in women, especially physicians, is real, but boundaries can mean freedom. So, how do we set positive boundaries with kindness and intent?   Dr. Tammie Chang is a board-certified physician in pediatric hematology/oncology practicing in Tacoma, Washington at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. She is the Medical Director of the MultiCare Provider Wellness Program and Founder and Director of her hospital's Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Program. And it turns out, our thoughts can be similar around money and around food--emotional eating is like emotional spending.
