Pastor Taylor Shippy - Exodus 20:1-3; Mark 10:17-27 John Wesley once said, “Whatever is loved, feared, delighted in, or depended on more than God that we make a god of.” Today, as we examine the first 'saying' of God from Mt. Sinai, the first of the 'Big Ten,' we meditate on having no other gods but God and the potential for us to create other gods either besides Him, before Him, beside Him, or against Him.

In Autumn 1967, Elisabeth Elliot visited Jerusalem to see for herself if the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War had indeed brought about a ‘new' Jerusalem, in fulfillment of the Biblical prophecies of the Redemption of the Holy City. What she came away with is an intensely personal account of the city, its monuments, and the suffering of its people. But nonetheless prophetic.  As yet another episode of war rages in the Middle East, Pastor Marwan Aboul-Zelof decided to revisit Elliot's 1969 out-of-print book, Furnace of the Lord: Reflections on the Redemption of the Holy City, record it and share it on the Didomi podcast in the hopes that Elliot's voice speaks to us today, and to help Christians engage in peacemaking in the region and bring about healing, reconciliation and peace. This is the seventh chapter of her book, There is No God but God.  More chapters will follow. Whereas in Isaiah chapters 5 and 17 the Lord wanted to destroy His vineyard, here we see a different picture. He will rescue His vines, tending them gently; He'll water and guard them continually. We understand that His anger was for purification and the removal of idols: ‘the full fruit of the removal of his sin' (v.9). The altars to the false gods will be smashed and the Asherah poles that brought God grief will no longer stand.

Though it is the fastest growing religion in the world, Islam remains shrouded by ignorance and fear. What is the essence of this ancient faith? Is it a religion of peace or war? How does Allah differ from the God of Jews and Christians? Can an Islamic state be founded on democratic values such as pluralism and human rights? A writer and scholar of comparative religions, Reza Aslan has earned international acclaim for the passion and clarity he has brought to these questions. In No god but God, challenging the "clash of civilizations" mentality that has distorted our view of Islam, Aslan explains this critical faith in all its complexity, beauty, and compassion. Contrary to popular perception in the West, Islam is a religion firmly rooted in the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Aslan begins with a vivid account of the social and religious milieu in which the Prophet Muhammad lived. The revelations that Muhammad received in Mecca and Medina, which were recorded in the Quran, became the foundation for a radically more egalitarian community, the likes of which had never been seen before. According to Reza Aslan, we are now living in the era of "the Islamic Reformation". No god but God is a persuasive and elegantly written account of the roots of this reformation and the future of Islamic faith.

Knowing that God alone is God and there is no other is just as relevant for us as it was in Isaiah's day. The folly and unreality of idols needs to be exposed. In these chapters God mocks the idols that we are tempted to trust in. --Whilst the idols of our culture may be different than Israel's we too need to be convinced of their powerlessness to save compared to the sovereign power of the One who alone made all things and who alone can redeem.

It is finally the day the drought will end. But before the rains come, the people must repent and be forgiven. Elijah sets up this contest on Mt. Carmel to prove decisively that Yahweh alone is God and there is no other. Through this contest, God will win back the hearts of his people and release their grip on their pathetic idols. He will forgive and restore; then the rains will fall.

Pr. Jon Niketh, preaching Even after Israel had experienced the vagaries of kings, they still longed for a true king to set things right. He would have the king’s title of Anointed One (Messiah); he would be the “one like a human being” (Son of Man) given dominion in Daniel’s vision. Jesus is given these titles, even though he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness, and those who recognize the truth voluntarily listen to him. We look forward to the day he is given dominion, knowing his victory will be the nonviolent victory of love.

Khateebah Noor-Malika Chishti delivers the 14th khutbah for The Women's Mosque of America on February 26th, 2016. As the mosque's first Sufi khateebah, Sister Noor-Malika shared her wisdom and insights from the Sufi tradition in understanding the Shahada (Muslim declaration of faith). After the jumma'a prayer service was over, Sister Noor-Malika led the congregation of women in a beautiful dhikr (remembrance) in honor of the Shahada. Bio: Sister Noor-Malika Chishti has been involved in interfaith work for over 40 years. Her training—beginning in 1972—in the Inayati Order introduced her to the diverse ways in which people approach spiritual practice. In 1999, she began exploring the Islamic roots of Sufism and, on the Night of Laylat al-Qadr, accepted Islam. Today, she serves as Vice President of reGeneration, an American interfaith non-profit organization that advances quality early childhood development and education in the Middle East, building bridges locally to effect sustainable change for future generations. Sister Noor-Malika is also a founding member of the Southern California Muslim-Jewish Forum, an umbrella body focused on strengthening Muslim-Jewish ties in Greater Los Angeles, and she is a founding member and Vice Chair Emeritus of the Southern California Committee for the Parliament of World Religions (SCCPW). She has been a member of the West Los Angeles Cousins group, where Jewish and Muslim women meet to engage in dialogue and service, for 13 years. Sister Noor-Malika's professional background was in the non-profit sector before she retired to become an administrator for the Crossroads School for the Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica, CA. She is a recipient of the “Golden Heart Award” of the Inayati Order “in recognition of [her] vital efforts in the service of the Message of Love, Harmony and Beauty.” In 2008, she founded Musallah Tauhid, where Sufi Muslims from different orders share a sacred space with a Jewish and Christian congregation in which they work to come to know one another and protect the environment. She is also a grandmother and a poet.

Global Dispatches -- World News That Matters

Reza Aslan is arguably the most influential scholar of religion in America today. He's best known for mixing it up with the likes of Bill Maher and explaining the basics of the academic study of religion to ignorant Fox News hosts. His books "Zealot" about Jesus and "No God But God" about Islam were both best sellers. In this episode Reza recounts his family's escape from Iran during the Revolution and tells the story of his conversion to evangelical Christianity in high school. Reza and host Mark Leon Goldberg talk the academic study of religion, religious experiences and rituals. Reza describes how 9-11 inadvertently thrust him into the limelight; and how "new atheists" get religion wrong. This is a great episode with lots of wonky academic study of religion talk.

Aired: 03/09/14 Last summer author and scholar of religions REZA ASLAN came out with a book that utilized a great deal of historical research to give readers a sense of the man, Jesus of Nazareth. ASLAN had taken on a similar task seven years earlier with his first book NO GOD BUT GOD, in which he tells the story of Mohammed. But the problem for some folks this time around is that Reza Aslan is a Muslim. In an interview that has been viewed at least a million and a half times on YouTube, Lauren Green of Fox News demanded to know, "You're a Muslim, so why did you write a book about the founder of Christianity?" - and that interview sent Aslan's book, ZEALOT: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, to the top of best-seller lists for weeks. REZA ASLAN has been a guest on Free Forum a number of times in the past, and I'm happy to welcome him back again, to talk a bit about the reaction, but much more about the content and meaning of his book. He examines Jesus through the lens of the time and place in which he lived, first-century Palestine, and labels him in the book's title, a zealot - a radical political opponent of the Roman occupation. Because Jesus was crucified without overthrowing Roman rule, he is one of many failed messiahs. But why did this particular failed messiah become the starting point of one of the world's great religions, wielding enormous influence over two thousand years later among more people than even existed during his lifetime?

It is the job of historians and scholars to take new and contemporary information and give  context and connection to events far beyond the time in which they happened. This is as true for wars, as it is for the story of Jesus.  Thus it is no accident that for over 2000 years, every word every written about Jesus was written by people that did not know him when he was alive.  It’s significant to note that this was as true in the twenty years after his death, as it is today.  Only today we have a broader compendium of knowledge from which to draw on and a keener understanding of the historical context. With respect to the Jesus story, this makes it easier in some ways to separate out the religious Jesus from the historical Jesus and in so doing, better understand the origins of Christianity, in its  birth time, and as it has evolved for over 2000  years.Few do this better than writer and scholar Reza Aslan.  The internationally acclaimed author of No God But God, has now written Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. My conversation with Reza Aslan:

Aired 05/19/09 REZA ASLAN is the author of "NO GOD BUT GOD" and his new book, "HOW TO WIN A COSMIC WAR: God, Globalization and the End of the War on Terror" REZA ASLAN says the only way to win a cosmic war is not to engage in one. That may seem obvious to some, but he's also saying that unless we recognize that we've been pulled into a cosmic war -- what that means and how it changes things -- we haven't got a chance of "winning" or even making the best of the situation. "A cosmic war is a battle not between armies or nations, but between the forces of good and evil. The ultimate goal of a cosmic war is to vanquish evil itself, which ensures that a cosmic war remains an absolute, eternal, and ultimately unwinnable conflict. Cosmic wars are fought not over land or politics but over identity." 1900 - 1/2 of world's population identified as members of major religions 2000 - 2/3 of world's population identified as members of major religions Aslan believes the days of wars between nation states are over. When globalization frees people from national identity, it's replaced by other identities - especially religion. We must strip the conflict between Islam and the West of its religious connotations, and we must address the actual grievances that fuel the Jihadist movement. A recent Gallup poll (see below) appears to back him up. According to AP: "Joblessness and poverty are a more potent source of tension between Muslims and wider European and U.S. society than religious differences, [according to] one of the first major studies of Muslim integration since the Sept. 11 terror attacks." REZA ASLAN has a fairly unique resume. Born in Iran, emigrated wih his family to Enid, Oklahoma as a child. Degrees in religion from UC Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara, and Harvard Divinity School, as well as an MFA from the Iowa Writers Program. His first book, NO GOD BUT GOD: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam offers more than a history - and the guy can write. The first time I interviewed him was just after Hamas had won the Palestinian election. We both hoped that having to actually run things would move Hamas in a positive direction. The US, Israel, and others weren't willing to find out. We pick up the conversation this week, looking at the lessons of history, the lessons of the recent past, and hopes for the future. http://www.rezaaslan.com
