It's simple: A booming economy, a foreign policy grounded in realism, a secure border, and popular working-class policies—all contrasted by a Democratic opposition mired in chaos, antisemitism, and no credible alternative. Victor Davis Hanson discusses this on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “Every time people say we're headed for a recession or his trade war is gonna tank the economy, data comes out. … Inflation is down. Energy prices are way down. Economic growth is up. Joblessness is down. “ Most of the issues that he's trying to undo of the progressive project, the public supports him. And his Democratic opposition—four months into his tenure—has still completely lost its mind and not only does not offer an alternative agenda, but personally, emotionally, psychologically puts people off.” (0:00) Current Polls (2:18) Economic Indicators and Trump's Policies (2:51) Trump's Foreign Policy Approach (4:47) Public Perception and Media Response (6:09) Democratic Opposition and Conclusion (8:03) Closing Remarks

The Congress of the People (Cope) is calling for the direct election of South Africa's president, to give credence to the mantra that the people shall govern. On Tuesday, Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota addressed a press briefing in Johannesburg, where he made it clear that citizens should govern and should be seen to govern. "We want to amplify once again our call for a constitutional amendment for voters to directly elect the president of our country, instead of using the procedures under the current party list system that promotes party interests above the interests of the people of our land. "This change should also apply to premiers and mayors. We adopted this position in 2008 and consistently repeated it in all our election manifestos," he said. Lekota's comments come months ahead of South Africa's seventh democratic elections, which is set to be held between May and August this year. The Constitution does not allow for the direct election of the head of state. According to Lekota, retaining the present electoral system will give South Africans more abysmal failures as presidents. "The national debt has soared, and the debt servicing costs, according to the National Treasury of South Africa, will, as a percentage of the main budget revenue, increase from 18% in 2022/23 to 19.8% in 2025/26 - and is expected to average R366.8-billion a year over the medium-term. "In other words, R1 out of every R5 collected in taxes must be paid as interest on the debt. With only 80% of revenue left and the massive size of government draining much of what remains, service delivery and infrastructure development will be negatively impacted," he said. Furthermore, Lekota said public services and several state-owned enterprises had collapsed. "Over many years, the Auditor-General's reports have been shelved, allowing failure and corruption to continue without consequences. The president has failed to hold ministers accountable for their lack of performance and has lacked the moral courage to disclose their performance outcomes. This violates the values of openness, accountability and responsiveness," he said. Lekota said the trust deficit between political leaders and ordinary South Africans had reached stratospheric levels. "According to the 2023 South African Reconciliation Barometer, 79% of South Africans believe that leaders cannot be trusted to do what is right. "Fikile Mbalula has just admitted how those at the helm of the leadership of our country misled Parliament. SoNA will be just another charade. South Africa would have been better off if a vote of no confidence debate kickstarted the new parliamentary year," he said. In a lengthy post on X, Mbalula explained his comments. "Other than members of the opposition and sworn enemies of the ANC, anyone who understood or interpreted the SG's remarks yesterday in Mpumalanga as an admission that the ANC assisted, abetted, aided or attempted to assist, abet or aid the former president in defrauding the government must have his/her head checked. The remarks must also be understood as political rally rhetoric and polemics," he said. But Lekota was unfazed by the African National Congress's explanation. He said if a new government was elected in the current electoral system, the paralysis in government would worsen. "The economy will be damaged even more. Joblessness will increase. Any state-owned entity that has not yet been brought to its knees will be pulled down. Ministers will remain as consumed by political infighting as ever, and incompetence mingled with corruption will continue longer," he said.

On this week's episode, Amber and Erika are joined by Broke-ish all-star, Dr. Algernon Austin, the Director of Race and Economic Justice at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. We discuss Dr. Austin's latest article, “Black Women's Views on Black Men's High Rate of Joblessness.” Dr. Austin helps us unpack some of the systemic reasons why the Black population is the only demographic where there are fewer employed men than women. From both the relational perspective and the communal impacts, Dr. Austin's research clearly demonstrates that Black male employment is an issue that undeniably and deeply affects Black women, too. Finally, we look at potential policy solutions that may help to address this problem and create stronger job opportunities for Black men in the future. Tune in to get the scoop!
Economic development promotes gender equality. But why? Does industrialisation enable women to liberate themselves from patriarchal control? Or is prosperity paramount for men's egalitarianism? I'll try to persuade you of both! Where men's upward mobility is thwarted, they lash out at women. This holds across America, North Africa and possibly more broadly. Why does conflict emerge as it did in Baltimore among the police and the African-American community? Is it caused by poor parenting? Poverty? Joblessness? I provide a psychological perspective on the situation. I look at how stereotypes develop and conflict among groups develops. The solution is complex but the theories on these two issues give us some insight into what has to happen to resolve the problems.

Oklahoma has incarcerated more women per capita than anywhere else in the world for nearly three decades. In 2010, the Inasmuch Foundation and the United Way of Central Oklahoma convened a group of 25 community leaders to address the rate at which Oklahoma incarcerates women and the trauma that occurs within a family when a mother goes to prison. This group identified an approach that would remove barriers and provide a path for more successful futures for mothers who battle cycles of trauma, poverty and incarceration. Founded on a collective impact model and designed around comprehensive programming and support, ReMerge was officially launched in 2011. Since that time, ReMerge has graduated 154 women who parent a total of 383 children. ReMerge has saved the state of Oklahoma more than $35 million dollars by providing a pathway for mothers to be restored to our community rather than incarcerated and separated from their children. Upon graduation, a ReMerge mother has safe and stable housing, is reunified with her minor children, is maintaining sobriety and on the pathway to stable employment. What makes ReMerge truly different from other diversion programs, is that upon graduation, a ReMerge mother is eligible to have her charges dismissed, removing a substantial barrier to the rest of her life. ReMerge serves mothers of minor children who are facing non-violent felony charges in Oklahoma County. Participants are referred by the District Attorney's office. ReMerge mothers are high-risk, high-need, meaning that without substantial treatment and support, they are unlikely to break the cycles of incarceration, addiction, and poverty. ReMerge utilizes evidence-based treatment and programming to provide individualized, wrap-around services for mothers and their families. ReMerge is a four phase program that first acts to stabilize moms and build a foundation for recovery. ReMerge provides safe and sober housing, food, clothing, transportation, access to mental and physical health care, and addiction recovery as baseline support. As ReMerge moms progress through the phases of our program, they gain the necessary coping, parenting, and practical skills needed to rebuild their lives and their families. As part of our holistic services, ReMerge mothers are assigned to a team that includes a case manager, a therapist, a health and wellness program manager, a child reunification program manager, education and employment coordinator, and a peer recovery support specialist. These teams support each mom to reach her goals and to meet the competencies required of each phase. As a ReMerge mother grows in her skill and capacity, she needs to enter the workforce but she needs a career, not just a job. Even in a state where the cost of living is relatively low, a mother, supporting an average of two children, cannot survive on minimum wage. The Prison Policy Initiative found that justice-involved people have an unemployment rate over 27%, which is significantly higher than the US unemployment rate of 3.6%. The unemployment rate is often even higher, 33% or more, for women. Joblessness is the number 1 indicator for reoffending. ReMerge invests significantly in the education and employment training of the women in our program because without the ability to grow wages and a future, hopelessness can cycle right back into addiction and incarceration. Through our program of holistic treatment, recovery, and education and employment support, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of ReMerge mothers and their families' futures.

We talk about success habits, minimalism, and the benefits of practicing daily gratitude. --- Build Your Own Success Blueprint with Marc Reklau Our guest is Mark Reklau, the founder and managing director of Maklau Publishing. Mark is the bestselling author of 11 books that have been translated to 15 languages and have sold over 600,000 copies worldwide. He is an author, entrepreneur, if ever there was one, who actually makes his living by writing self-help books. And he lives in the sun in Malta. Mark, welcome to the show. Hi, Steve. Thanks for having me. Well, I'm very pumped to have you because you are kind of a very special type of entrepreneur, an artist who makes a living from their art, which I think is super cool. So I'd like us to dig into that and to see whether the audience members can emulate any of the stuff that you are doing. So, so let's start with your, your background and your journey. How did you become an author entrepreneur? How does one do that? I mean, so many people would like to be able to do it. How, how does it actually happen in real life? How does it happen in real life? It's about how I'm asking myself that many times. It happens like everything, step by step. So I'm going back a little bit in my history. So all my education was normal education. I have a business administration. I studied business administration for five years, which I didn't really like, but everybody studied it. Then I worked in a job for 10 years that I didn't like. And then after 11 years, I was fired from that job. That was in 2013 and I had done a coaching training before. I read self-help books, personal development all my life since I'm 16. So and you know sometimes in coaching we even get taught, we say you know, reframe. Everything happens for a reason and then when you and one of the reframes is being jobless or having the opportunity to think what do I really want in life. So I said okay I'm breaching that to my clients because I already have some clients so maybe I should apply it on myself. And then the first idea as an entrepreneur was building a coaching practice, life coaching business, coaches and go take it from there. I had two years because I got jobless money for two years and I had some money saved so I knew I have like two years to build something. In coaching, we learn the art of reframing. Joblessness became an opportunity to ponder life's true desires.Share on X Usually they say two years is enough. It took a little longer but then I said and I thought I want to be a coach and have the coaching practice but then I also thought you know a book is fantastic to differentiate you from other coaches, from other, so after half a year, so the book was like, my first book was like in my head, growing, I just had to bring it to paper, so after half a year I said, okay, let's write it, it's the best time ever, I'm jobless, I have all the time in the world, so I lost my number one excuse, oh I would love to do it but I don't have time, I didn't have that excuse anymore, and I said, okay, money is coming in and the savings were still up. So I said, okay, do it now, right? And then I wrote the book because it was something I always wanted to write. 30 Days is my first book and it is because I discovered that also in the coaching training that there are some exercises in personal development that if you really do them, they work. Only nobody does them, right? So in the time that I was jobless, I also didn't have an excuse to not try those exercises, like writing down the goals, or being grateful, writing down three things you are grateful for every day, and all these things, or reading an hour every day in a new book, right? So I did it, I wrote my book, I published my book,

Steve and Troy finally emerge into the sunshine after an indeterminate length of time in their respective basements and get together to waffle endlesslessly. Daniel Flaming & Anthony Orlando stopped into a Zoom room with our ED a few weeks ago to share findings from a new report. Their focus is on homelessness during and after the COVID pandemic. Anyone in Los Angeles during the 2008 recession will recall the growth of people who became unhoused. Following that recession 10% of those who found themselves jobless became unhoused. The Economic Roundtable report uses past pandemic as well as data from the 2008 recession to predict how COVID joblessness might translate into homelessness over the coming years. Looking at joblessness as well as the housing market, the authors predict that the pandemic recession will see more than double the unhousing that we saw in 2008. Our guests bring dire predictions and come prepared with concrete policy solutions that can help prevent a "great unhousing." These policy solutions could also prevent catastrophe after the next recession or pandemic. 'Locked Out: Unemployment and Homelessness in the COVID Economy' is underwritten by the Economic Roundtable, and is written by Daniel Flaming, Anthony W. Orlando, Patrick Burns, and Seth Pickens.
