Cultivating Democracy: Politics and Citizenship in Agrarian India (Oxford UP, 2021) by Dr. Mukulika Banerjee offers a groundbreaking rethinking of democracy, moving beyond its institutional frameworks to focus on its lived, everyday dimensions. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in the villages of Madanpur and Chishti in India, the book examines how agrarian communities cultivate democratic values—solidarity, reciprocity, and ethical citizenship—through practices embedded in their daily lives. Dr. Banerjee challenges conventional notions of democracy as confined to elections and state institutions, instead presenting it as a process deeply rooted in cultural-social practices and values. She highlights how rural communities, through cooperation in agriculture, rituals, festivals, and even moments of conflict and repair, create and sustain the democratic spirit. In doing so, the book underscores the resilience of these practices, even as procedural democracy faces erosion under broader political and economic pressures. At its core, Cultivating Democracy compels us to reimagine democracy not as an abstract ideal but as a lived and ongoing project shaped by the rhythms of everyday life. Through its rich ethnographic detail and theoretical insight, the book offers profound lessons on the fragility and strength of democracy, making it both a deeply scholarly and urgently relevant work. Rounak Bose is a doctoral student in History at the University of Delaware. His research explores the intersections of caste, religiosities, performances, sacred geographies, and the state, as informing/informed by colonial and postcolonial mobilities and circulatory regimes across South Asia and Indian Ocean networks. Besides these specific research interests, his disciplinary interests revolve across anthropology, linguistics, literature, and the digital humanities. When not reading or writing in the university library, Rounak can be found running along Newark's trails and petting the canines he meets along the way. Learn more about your ad choices. "The recording is placed in Hazrat Nizamuddin, a mausoleum dedicated to the Sufi saint – Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya who lived during 1238 – 1325 CE. He was a saint of the Chishti order and a firm believer in secularism and religious harmony. The mausoleum was constructed in 1325 by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq (The eighteenth Sultan of Delhi). "The recording was made while walking the premises of the Dargah, during a much crowded Eid Milad-ul Nabi (observation of the day when the Islamic prophet Muhammad is reported to have been born) -23. One can also chart the distance from the Centre of the Dargah where ceremonial Qawwali is taking place. This distance changes as we move close to and then further away from the grave/shrine." He specializes in immigration policy and has spent years researching and writing about the United States' outdated asylum system, which he says is “built on a 1952 architecture.” Chishti discusses how the system could be meaningfully changed, including how Congress could make it both more humane and responsive to the country's needs. Journalist Seema Chishti's mother, Sumitra, wrote a cookbook so that she could pass down recipes from their rather unique kitchen - a kitchen which was shared by Sumitra, who was a Kshatriya Hindu from Mysore in Karnataka, and her husband Anees, a Syed Muslim from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. Now, in her new book, Sumitra and Anees, Chishti includes recipes from her mother's cookbook and tells the story of her parents and their marriage. In this episode, she joins Sandip Roy to talk about the book, why she chose to write it, and the increasing demonization of interfaith relationships.

EP 27: Sumitra and Anees by Seema Chishti‘Sumitra and Anees, Tales and Recipes from a Khichdi family' by the Delhi based journalist Seema Chishti is a poignant tale of her loving parents- Sumitra and Anees- falling in love, having an inter-faith marriage and leaving a legacy of great humanity and values for her. Seema Chishti is in conversation with broadcaster Achala Sharma in this episode of Kitaab Kaulum. Seema Chishti argues how in the India of today, social and communal fault lines have become starker than ever before. Inter-faith marriages, once seen as the hallmark of a plural society, are now being increasingly used to further a divisive political narrative.Journalist Seema Chishti, herself the product of an inter-faith marriage from a time when the ‘idea of India' was not just an idea but a lived reality, tells in this book the story of her parents: Sumitra, a Kshatriya Hindu from Mysore in Karnataka, and Anees, a Syed Muslim from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. Woven into their story are recipes from Sumitra's kitchen, a site of confluence for the diverse culinary traditions she mastered. The book has been published by Harper Collins India.
On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Susanne Chisthi, one of the leading names in the industry. Susanne started her career in finance before becoming an influential FinTech voice. Susanne is also renowned for her work with investors and FinTech startups through the FINTECH Circle which is a place where startups can seek education and angel investment. Susanne is also renowned for the wonderful books that she has written in collaboration with other co-authors and co-editors to educate the FinTech sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS The unique thing about our books is that we crowdsourced the best knowledge, worldwide, because we believe in the power of the community. One person alone could never write such a comprehensive book on FinTech, RegTech, or InsurTech, for example. It would be impossible. But accessing knowledge from 70 authors globally, representing corporations, Tech startups, Tech scaleups, and thought leaders, all coming together and contributing their own expertise to the projects, makes these books extraordinary. Talking about the lessons we learned from lack of travel – when you buy products abroad you can claim the VAT back, sometimes large amounts. I never actually claim my VAT, because I never wanted to queue up at the airport to claim my VAT receipts. So I never claimed these back in my whole life. One of the FinTech companies I'm working with at present is putting this all online. Imagine the future of VAT claims. This is an example of FinTech hitting a pain point in B2C that millions of customers face worldwide and we can see already a huge impact when travel is back to normal. Diversity is a key thing for anybody in a large financial institution. The team should be diverse. When we think about the testing and development of AI, business leaders need to be accountable for it too. Particularly how fair AI-led decision-making is? Who gets accepted or rejected by an AI algorithm for a loan? Remember that those things can be very discriminatory if they're coded wrongly. It is important for businesses to access a diverse workforce, to be able to develop AI-led technologies, and think about the use cases, how they can go wrong, and how to protect every individual through ethical AI. An ethical AI board is an important mechanism to ensure businesses are doing the right thing long-term and are avoiding renowned stereotypes. We have a responsibility as citizens to make things simpler and more transparent. We've seen lots of movement in the FinTech sector in terms of investment behavior, but the good news is that in the long term the FinTech sector will continue to boom and investors will want to stay in the sector. Investors will return and invest in ventures and deploy capital from the earlier stages to the later stages. BEST MOMENTS ‘Our goal is to make FinTech a mainstream sector and, at some stage, to replace finance overall – there will be no finance without FinTech.' ‘Lots of banks are trying to figure out the best way to engage with the FinTech sector. It's certainly easier said than done. The devil is often in the detail. If you acquire a FinTech company the key thing is to make sure you integrate the company into your organization well so that it still works after the acquisition without destroying its spirit so both the startup and the corporation can benefit.' ‘Technology is everybody's responsibility, it's mandatory for leaders to understand how technology can shape, empower and enable what they do from a strategic point of view.' ‘2020 was a year that shocked us all. I was in China in January of 2020 actually promoting a book. The effect of the current change will be profound. And nobody knows yet what the future will look like. So planning long term will remain challenging.' ABOUT THE GUEST Susanne Chishti is the CEO of FINTECH Circle, Europe's 1st Angel Network focused on fintech opportunities. She has also been a FinTech TV Commentator on CNBC. Aminah Chishti Qawwal is a leading force in the art of traditional qawwali tabla. As a student of the great Ustad Dildar Hussain Khan (tabla player for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for 28 years), Aminah has embodied this music through years of study and commitment. She has challenged the cultural confines of women in Pakistan and India not only by performing tabla in an all-male arena, but also by receiving permission to perform at the shrines of Pakistan's greatest Sufi saints, where women haven't traditionally been allowed to play. Aminah represents a new bridge between East and West in a cultural exchange rooted in ancient tradition. This interview illuminates Aminah's journey into this rich heritage. Gayati. Live. Breathe. Sing! Informal singing by Gauri Varma
This traditional bandish based on Raag Yaman has been sung in North India through the centuries in honour of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (12-13th century) who settled in Ajmer and founded the popular Chishtiyya sect that in many ways defined the pluralistic tenor of mediaeval Indian Islamic philosophy. Affectionately invoked as Gharib Nawaaz (he who showers his beneficence on the poor and helpless), he is revered to this day by many Indians of all faiths.

Abstract: Tauopathies are a group of more than twenty known disorders that involve progressive neurodegeneration, cognitive decline, and pathological tau accumulation. Current therapeutic strategies provide only limited, late-stage symptomatic treatment. This is partly due to lack of understanding of the molecular mechanisms linking tau and cellular dysfunction, especially during the early stages of disease progression. In this study, we treated early stage tau transgenic mice with a multi-target kinase inhibitor to identify novel substrates that contribute to cognitive impairment and exhibit therapeutic potential. Drug treatment significantly ameliorated brain atrophy and cognitive function as determined by behavioral testing and a sensitive imaging technique called manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) with quantitative R1 mapping. Surprisingly, these benefits occurred despite unchanged hyperphosphorylated tau levels. To elucidate the mechanism behind these improved cognitive outcomes, we performed quantitative proteomics to determine the altered protein network during this early stage in tauopathy and compare this model with the human AD proteome. We identified a cluster of preserved pathways shared with human tauopathy with striking potential for broad multi-target kinase intervention. We further report high confidence candidate proteins as novel therapeutically relevant targets for the treatment of tauopathy. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
“When you think about discrimination, so far it has been from one person to another, the danger of AI is that it scales this up. AI solutions have such an important impact on our societies, perhaps they need be approved. Maybe we can learn something from the medical world where medicine has to be approved before it can be launched.” This is a conversation with Susanne Chishti. Susanne is the CEO of FINTECH Circle, Europe's first Investor Network focused on fintech investments. She is also the Co-Editor of "The FINTECH Book" which has been translated into 10 languages. Her other titles, compiled with crowd wisdom include The WealthTECH Book, The InsurTECH Book, The PAYTECH Book, The LEGALTECH Book and The AI Book. In this episode, Susanne talks about how AI could scale up discriminatory decision making in FinTech and beyond, how AI is so powerful, impactful and unexplainable that it may need medical level approval. She also tells the story of crowd sourcing the authors for the AI Book which was published in 2020 by Wiley and features a chapter by yours truly about AI and our financial future.

Khateebah Noor-Malika Chishti delivers the 14th khutbah for The Women's Mosque of America on February 26th, 2016. As the mosque's first Sufi khateebah, Sister Noor-Malika shared her wisdom and insights from the Sufi tradition in understanding the Shahada (Muslim declaration of faith). After the jumma'a prayer service was over, Sister Noor-Malika led the congregation of women in a beautiful dhikr (remembrance) in honor of the Shahada. Bio: Sister Noor-Malika Chishti has been involved in interfaith work for over 40 years. Her training—beginning in 1972—in the Inayati Order introduced her to the diverse ways in which people approach spiritual practice. In 1999, she began exploring the Islamic roots of Sufism and, on the Night of Laylat al-Qadr, accepted Islam. Today, she serves as Vice President of reGeneration, an American interfaith non-profit organization that advances quality early childhood development and education in the Middle East, building bridges locally to effect sustainable change for future generations. Sister Noor-Malika is also a founding member of the Southern California Muslim-Jewish Forum, an umbrella body focused on strengthening Muslim-Jewish ties in Greater Los Angeles, and she is a founding member and Vice Chair Emeritus of the Southern California Committee for the Parliament of World Religions (SCCPW). She has been a member of the West Los Angeles Cousins group, where Jewish and Muslim women meet to engage in dialogue and service, for 13 years. Sister Noor-Malika's professional background was in the non-profit sector before she retired to become an administrator for the Crossroads School for the Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica, CA. She is a recipient of the “Golden Heart Award” of the Inayati Order “in recognition of [her] vital efforts in the service of the Message of Love, Harmony and Beauty.” In 2008, she founded Musallah Tauhid, where Sufi Muslims from different orders share a sacred space with a Jewish and Christian congregation in which they work to come to know one another and protect the environment. She is also a grandmother and a poet.
