On October 7th, the Palestinian Islamic extremist organization Hamas carried out the worst mass-killing of Jews since the Holocaust. In this episode, I look at some of the tragic realities of the attack, what it means for Israelis and Palestinians, and what could happen next locally and at the broader regional level. Views my own. Excel is the #1 tool B2B SaaS companies use for many financial tasks, including calculating SaaS metrics to surface insights for operating decisions and investor updates.Ali started his career in tech as an auditor at Ernst and Young, with a priority focus on revenue recognition and reporting. While auditing a top tier B2B SaaS company, he was provided multiple spreadsheets with thousands of rows of data, and it even required almost 10 minutes to just open the Excel file, and almost 6 months to complete the audit. The primary challenge, finding all of the data required for the audit in an extremely large and poorly structured Excel model. What are the top signs that a founder/CEO will see to know it might be time to move beyond Excel? Ali suggests at $1M and above that Quickbooks is a fine General Ledger, but the initial issues are associated with revenue recognition and the associated reporting. Often, this is due to not having the right human resources who truly understand revenue recognition policy, and then the manual required to create a model and the appropriate formulas for revenue recognition. One sign that Excel might not be doing the job, is if revenue is being recognized on a cash basis. Another sign might be when an investor asks what your "MRR or ARR" is, and you realize it includes professional services or one-time fees. Why is getting revenue recognition important to an early-stage company? It becomes important when external stakeholders, like existing or potential investors, ask for things like GAAP revenue growth rates, and ARR growth rates and you cannot provide the answers because the financial foundation and reporting infrastructure have not been established.Inevitably if you are quickly heading to $1M ARR or already above that level, founders and CEOs are expected to know their numbers. One common tactic is to hire an external accountant, and ask them to set up revenue recognition and other financial reporting in Excel - the challenge with this is that it is not scalable, and if the "rent an accountant" goes away, it is hard for the next resource to understand the excel model.Next, we discussed the reality of ASC 606 (GAAP accounting policy), and how it impacts the need for more advanced financial reporting capabilities. ASC 606 includes very complex and nuanced accounting rules that Excel is just not well positioned to be the primary solution for modeling and reporting GAAP revenue and the associated financial metrics such as Gross Profit, EBITDA, and Net Income. The most important initial SaaS metric is Contracted ARR, and ARR including growth rates. Quickly following is the ability to understand Sales and Marketing expenses and the associated customer acquisition cost efficiency metrics including Customer Acquisition Cost, and CAC Payback Period. Cash burn and cash runway are other critical insights that a founder/CEO needs to ensure are available and accurate early on.When I asked Ali about other SaaS Metrics, he highlighted a recent example where a company wanted to start reporting their CARR and ARR, and they close a majority of deals mid-month. They were confused about how they report ARR for the month the contract was signed, and how those decisions impact the associated recognized revenue (GAAP revenue). If you are an early-stage SaaS company and are having challenges with Excel to capture, calculate and report basis SaaS financials including GAAP revenue, CARR, ARR and the associated SaaS performance metrics the conversation with Ali Rizvi is highly informative.

This episode is the second installment in the series ‘The Epileptic Prophet' in which we discuss Muhammad's neurological condition and possible epilepsy. We were joined by Dr. Ali A. Rizvi to help us with his take on this topic based on his experience as a medical doctor specializing in pathology. We kicked off the discussion by giving a quick recap of the first episode in this series. We then move moved on to talk about Muhammad's postictal psychosis symptoms while he was receiving revelation. We then compared the descriptions of Muhammad's condition in the Islamic literature to the symptoms of contemporary epilepsy patients. Additionally, we listened in on an interview by Dr. Dede Korkut in which he explains psychosis and behavioral changes in epilepsy patients. The conversation then moved on to how Islamic scholars and the Muslim population in general attribute epilepsy to jinn possession. We went through various hadith, Quranic verses, and other Islamic literature that support this idea. We also responded to Farid's assertion that people around Muhammad did not notice or record any accounts of Muhammad having seizure-like symptoms or epilepsy. We presented numerous Quranic verses and hadith in which people thought that Muhammad was crazy, mad, or jinn possessed. Finally, we discussed Muhammad's conditions while receiving revelation. We talked about Muhammad's auditory hallucinations, his convulsive seizures, and his paroxysm. To support our claims we went through a vast number of Quranic verses, Seerah, Hadith, and tafsir and we compared them to the books on Muhammad written by neuroscience experts. A full list of resources referenced in this presentation can be found on the link in the description below. I urge you to take a listen and also to check out the sources we used. We will reach out to you shortly!====================================This week, The Musafir Stories speaks to Abhishek Vaid, founder of the Untravel Show as he takes us across the Indo-Pak border to the holy gurudwara of Kartarpur Sahib, the place where Guru Nanak spent the last years of his life! Today's destination: Kartarpur, Pakistan! Nearest Airport: Raja Sansi Airport, Amritsar Nearest Railway Station: Dera Baba Nanak Prerequisites : You need an ETA - electronic transfer authorization to travel and passport is mandatory, even though there is no visa stamped on the passport. Look up the process and requirements on https://prakashpurb550.mha.gov.in/kpr/ Packing : Avoid carrying anything that you would not carry on a plane (carry-on) Time of the year : Round the year (but watch out for the political situation and COVID-19!) Length of the itinerary: 1 day Itinerary Highlights: - Start from Amritsar and drive/take local transportation to Dera Baba Nanak. - Complete your immigration formalities at this post, the experience is very hospitable. One can apply no earlier than 15 days before the planned date of travel.- A bus ferries you from Dera Baba Nanak to Kartarpur, it is a short journey of 4kms. - Make sure to carry 20USD/1800INR as the fee has to be paid at Kartarpur. - Start early so that you get to Kartarpur around 9am. The latest you can get in is about 2pm since you have to return by 4pm IST. - Each visitor is allowed to carry items up to 7kgs. Cameras and photography is allowed. - Kartarpur is significant as the first guru and founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak spent the final 18 years of his life here. - The corridor was opened after years of lobbying by both the governments and important members of the Sikh community. - The corridor now leads to the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara which is one of the largest gurdwaras of the world. - Built in white marble, the gurudwara complex has an elegant and simple look, very different from the Golden temple in Amritsar, one of the other important places of Sikh pilgrimage. - The gurudwara is an epitome of calmness and tranquility, despite of its size and the crowds of people. - The main shrine has day long prayers and darshan and the community kitchen/langar severs food to the pilgrims for the full day. - The complex also has a well that is from the time of Guru Nanak devji, a monument of the Kirpaan or dagger as well as a small market to buy souvenirs. There is also a muslim shrine in the vicinity. - One of the highpoint of the visit, besides the opportunity to pay homage to Guru Nanak is the chance to interact with Pakistani locals who travel here to interact with folks from across the border. - The ambience is that of peace, calmness and friendship and very different from the Wagah border where patriotism and aggression is more evident. - A great opportunity for not just followers of sikhism but others as well to visit a historical and religiously significant place across the border when the option is available! This episode is Part 2 of our 2-part series with Ali Rizvi, 37 year old from Washington D.C., U.S. (born in Pakistan) In the last episode (#45) Ali told us about how his search for identity lead him to atheism. In this episode, we ask him for specific questions to understand his mindset - questions like how did he explain this to his family and friends? What if Islam was the right religion? Where do you get your morality from, if you don't have a religion? Disclaimer - this episode may not be suitable for the easily offended, as some content may be sensitive for Muslim listeners. However, our goal with Ali was to keep the conversation as respectful as possible, but also allowing him to express himself and to share his thoughts of various Islamic concepts.

Ibrahim Abdallah is the co-founder of Muslimish, an organization that provides a safe, supportive, and open-minded environment for the exchange of ideas between former and questioning Muslims. He is a firebrand ex-Muslim activist who is known for his fiery speeches and no-holds-barred criticisms of Islam, the Quran, and all religion in general. Speakers at Muslimish conferences have included our own Ali Rizvi and previous Secular Jihadists guests Sarah Haider, Alishba Zarmeen, and Noura Embabi (former Muslimish president). On June 23, Muslimish will hold its annual summer conference in New York City, featuring Maryam Namazie and Ali Rizvi. He joined us in this episode to discuss his organization, what "Muslim" means in the twenty-first century (this part got a little heated), why Islam may be more dangerous because it is a more sophisticated and "intelligent" religion than Christianity, and of course, some of our favorite absurdities in Islamic scripture. The Secular Jihadists has been made possible thanks to the gracious support of the Illuminati and the great state of Israel. That's what we have been told, but we haven't received our checks yet. In the meantime, we greatly appreciate the support of our current donors. In this episode of Quill or Be Quilled, Greg talks with Ali Rizvi, author of The Atheist Muslim, about Soundgarden for a solid ten minutes before moving on to cultural flashpoints like Muslim identity, bigotry from the Left and Right, terrorism, and free speech.
Ali Rizvi grew up in Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, and moved to North America when he was 24. He now writes about atheism, secularism and Islam. In the wake of the Manchester concert attack and two London terrorist attacks, Ali and Josh dig into the thorny topic of how to reform Islam without tarnishing Muslims. Can the Koran be taken less seriously? Should Western feminists stop glorifying the hijab? Can we quit it with identity politics? And what is the real, deeper damage done by terrorism? Ali’s book is The Atheist Muslim. After hearing this conversation, you’ll wanna read it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Join me and my good friend Ali Rizvi for a conversation about Life in Saudi Arabia. Ali and I share a very similar geographical background. We both grew up as Pakistani expats in Saudi in fairly liberal Muslim families. It’s always fun to compare notes… We discuss his early years in school, how snowflakes are secret code for The Star of David :P , we talk about the differences between the Shia experience and the Sunni one & reminisce about Betamax, Ramadan TV shows like Full House, Small Wonder, Punky Brewster. The ex-muslim community has grown, and with that comes some differences in approach….the disadvantages of ’the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ type of tactics. Overall, Ali put me in a really hopeful and optimistic mood about how attitudes around apostasy are changing, how irreligiosity in even countries like Saudi Arabia is growing. Here is a link to the gallup poll he referenced http://www.wingia.com/web/files/news/14/file/14.pdf We touched briefly upon the subject of creationism in public schools in the US, but I found that there are some instances where people to get away with teaching it: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2014/01/creationism_in_public_schools_mapped_where_tax_money_supports_alternatives.html Check out Ali's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Atheist-Muslim-Journey-Religion-Reason/dp/1250094445 ---- If you enjoy the show, please consider supporting via patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos Leave an iTunes review: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/polite-conversations/id1086199663?mt=2

Religions have always gone through transitions over time. Not only do the faiths themselves evolve, but the role they play in day-to-day life adapts to fit the needs of a given culture. As the youngest Abrahamic religion on the market, all eyes are on Islam, as a debate rages as to whether there is any chance of reform or secularization within a religion that is so deeply woven into the fabric of the Muslim world. Ali Rizvi is a Pakistani-Canadian writer, physician, and author of the new book Atheist Muslim: A Journey from Religion to Reason. Rizvi is one of many Muslims who assert that while they have lost their religion, they haven’t lost their Muslim identity. Rizvi considers Islam to be a religion with a set of ideas that are fair game to be criticized, but he also sees Muslims as distinct, as a culture of which Islam is not a mandatory component. After losing his faith while studying as a scientist and physician, Rizvi continued to participate and identify with many of the cultural aspects of being Muslim. He found that he wasn’t alone in his feelings, and predicts that today’s young Muslims will be the start of the transition toward secularism for Muslims around world.
At the end of the podcast there are a few Urdu words, loose translation: Tarek: Go find your (future) kids a 'white school' - oh but all schools here (in Canada) are white Me: Oh yeah ... all schools here are white... whatever should i do now (sarcasm) Him: Is there anything left? (to talk about) Me: Whats left? Nothing. Tell me, do you at least now believe i'm a Pakistani woman? Him: Yes, yes I believe that. Me: Excellent. [Hopefully that will put all my, "Eiynah is probably a white man" trolls to rest] Anyhoo, if its possible, i think this convo is more bizarre than the last. We discuss Tarek self Id-ing as muslim, whether Pakistanis are comparable to racists and nazis, how my parents and Ali Rizvi's parents are supposedly genocide supporters (because Pakistani). His pro India/Hinduism bias....and... beef. link to Part 1: https://soundcloud.com/politeconversations/episode-12-part-1-tarek-fatah ---sorry there were some tech difficulties with the sound.. first ten minutes u might hear a slight echo in places. It's been quite a wild ride to have this episode of Polite Conversations returned to me. It was returned butchered, with some really nasty messages about me, inserted into it. Some random ads were placed in as well. So, the quality/flow of sound is not great at some parts, but bear with us. Just being able to release this once endangered episode is quite a big deal. Just like Jesus, Polite Conversations is resurrected this Easter Sunday. :) After what I've been through, it *is* a miracle! :P Join me and Ali Rizvi as we discuss ball-gags, burqas, going commando in Mecca, and much more! Sorry for the choppy-ness....had to erase the sabotages as well as unnecessary ex-cohost bits. Sam addresses Twitter controversy regarding Fareed Zakaria, Dalia Mogahed, and John Esposito. What progress have you made toward becoming vegetarian or vegan? If the Islamic reformation/modernization movement doesn't succeed, what do you think should be the alternative?Do you think your reliance on hypotheticals and thought experiments has become a hindrance to making headway and discourse on important issues, in particular the thread of Islamic terrorism? Generally speaking, how big a role should thought experiments and hypotheticals play in discussing key issues? In what way should the imagined repercussions affect what you decide to publicly share? If you believe something to be true, would it be moral to withhold it? In this respect Is there such a thing as a noble lie of omission? Are there ideas you've decided against sharing? What are they? Are their views of yours that you believe don't get enough attention?Would you be willing to be ostracized from the people you love for the sake of the greater good? Should ex-Muslims like us delegate the task of critiquing religion to such people as Ali Rizvi and Sarah Haider who are able to leave the religion with fewer repercussions? Or do you believe the threat of fundamental Islam is so great that people should risk ostracism, violence, and even death to fight against it? Is it even possible to fully flourish as a human being while living your whole life under a pretense?I'll simplify your arguments against the regressive left and summarize them as: the left has missed the point so badly that they're basically responsible for smart and otherwise sensitive people to lean toward the right. This argument has always troubled me, and I saw it epitomized in the recent presidential elections in Argentina. Isn't it intellectual and politically lazy to support right-wing ideas and policy just because the left has gotten it or most of it wrong? Don't you think that people in positions like yours should also be advocating for a better left? How fast do you read?Is there anything inherently wrong with polygamy between three or more consenting adults? If so what? And if not, why call it out as an example of evil instead of the religious imperative itself?Do you think there's a possibility given advances in technology that you could have your stance changed on free will?Is killing another human being always wrong even in circumstances such as self-defense. Is there an ethics for killing?I wonder why you don't use the example of child abuse by Catholic priests as being another case of religious doctrine–in this case for celibacy having harmful repercussions in real life.
