HARLINGEN, Texas - The vice president of international sales and global development for Frontier Airlines says the Rio Grande Valley has great potential as a tourist destination.Alfredo Gonzalez gave an in-depth interview to the Rio Grande Valley International News Service at a recent news conference held at Valley International Airport in Harlingen. The news conference was held to announce a new nonstop flight from VIA to Las Vegas, starting in September, on Sundays and Thursdays. The one-way price from Frontier Airlines is only $49.While the new service might have been started to assist Valley tourists wishing to visit Las Vegas, it was put to Gonzalez that Vegas residents might also be interested in the Valley, After all, the Rio Grande Valley is lucky enough to be home to South Padre Island. Gonzalez said he could not agree more.“This is not just a flight, it is a story to be told. After what we suffered in the last year, this is a beautiful story and a beautiful destination that has all the assets that we think we need in order to have a successful flight,” Gonzalez said.“This area is an undiscovered gem. Even though as discovered as places like South Padre Island are, I think that the diversity of product on both sides of the border are amazing and I think it is what people in today's world are looking for. They might not be looking for the giant rollercoaster anymore. They are looking for beautiful beaches, wide open spaces, places where you can take your family, relax and really take in after such a hard time in the last year and a half.” Gonzalez continued: “South Padre Island has historically been an amazing recreational holiday vacation destination. And I think we as an airline understand that people need to go in both directions. Yes, it is great that we can service the most fun city in America, Las Vegas, but at the same time look at the numbers of hundreds of thousands of people that live in Clark County and all around Las Vegas that want to have a holiday on the beach. There are no beaches in Vegas.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.

Wood: Culture of democracy In Mexico is alive and kicking

It was a terrific opportunity yesterday to observe Mexican democracy in action. And, I have to say that the INE (Instituto Nacional Electoral) did an incredible job. They did an incredible job of organizing the election. I would say more importantly than that, of working with Mexican civil society, and by civil society I do not mean NGOs (non-government organizations. I mean the people on the street who organized themselves to run the polling stations. The INE work hand in hand with them in terms of the training, providing them with the resources they need to actually execute a very well-run, fair, free, transparent election. I had the opportunity to travel around the southern part of Mexico City yesterday, visiting five different polling stations. I was there for the rapid count in one of them and it is an extraordinarily simple process but it is one that works very, very well. One of the biggest takeaways of this election is democracy does work in Mexico. I know that a lot of people have had doubts about the future of democracy. It is alive and well. The INE did a great job, as I said, but Mexican civic culture, the culture of democracy is alive and kicking. And there is great pride on the part of the Mexican people in their own elections. And a large part of that comes from the fact that they are so intimately involved in it. Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service's website to see the full commentary from Duncan Wood, vice president for strategy and new initiatives; senior advisor to the Mexico Institute. HARLINGEN, Texas - The City of Harlingen and South Padre Island are working more closely than ever to ensure an efficient shuttle service is operating between SPI and Valley International Airport. This is the view of Marv Esterly, aviation director for VIA.“We are joined at the hip with South Padre Island, the City of Harlingen and Valley International Airport,” Esterly said.“We carry 70 percent of the air traffic going to the island through Valley International Airport. So we realize we need each other. We have quickly formed a great partnership.”Esterly gave his views to the Rio Grande Guardian on the first day Viva Aerobus brought passengers to VIA from Monterrey.“It is important we have great ground transportation once you get here. That is one of the things we are working on right now,” Esterly said.“We have a reciprocating agreement with South Padre Island that allows South Padre Island taxis to actually pick up here at Valley International Airport. Before they were able to drop off, so they would drive all the way here and then they would dead end back. Now they can just enter our cab line here. It allows us to have a better taxi cab service.”Asked about an improved shuttle service between VIA and SPI, Esterly said:“We are working closely with the Island on a shuttle service. We have three companies at this point that we are watering, like a flower they are coming out. A brand new service with really nice vehicles. We are really happy to continue to work with them to get this thing going.”In his in-depth interview, Esterly also spoke about VIA revamping its Federal Inspection Station in order to accommodate Customs and Border Protection staff.Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian's website to read the full story.

AUSTIN, Texas - Ruth Hughs is having to give up her role as Border Commerce Coordinator for Texas because she is resigning as Secretary of State. The Texas Tribune reported Friday that Hughs is tendering her resignation as Secretary of State, effective May 31. That is the last day of the current legislative session. The Tribune notes that a secretary of state appointed in between regular legislative sessions is constitutionally required to leave office immediately if the Senate goes through an entire session without confirming them. The Senate Nominations Committee, chaired by Republican Dan Buckingham never took up Hughs’ nomination. The Tribune went on to say that Hughs stayed out of the political fray when it came to elections and elections policy and kept a much lower profile during her time in office compared to predecessor David Whitley. While that may be true, it was not the case when it came to another of the secretary of state’s key duties - border trade.Hughs chaired the Border Trade Advisory Committee, which played a key role in developing the Texas-Mexico Border Transportation Master Plan for the Texas Department of Transportation. She chaired the BTAC in her capacity as Texas’ Border Commerce Coordinator. After the master plan was finished, Hughs spoke highly of it at a Texas Transportation Commission meeting in Austin. She also promoted the plan in the Rio Grande Valley in April. “The City of Pharr is proud to have welcomed Secretary of State Ruth Hughs at our recent RGVMPO Transportation Policy Committee meeting as we worked on implementing the Border Trade Master Plan,” said Pharr Mayor Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez, MD. RGVMPO stands for Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization. Hernandez chairs the group. In a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott announcing her resignation as Secretary of State, Hughs said of her role as Border Commerce Coordinator:“I am also proud of the work we have clone to strengthen our international relationships and facilitate business growth and trade. The friendships we enjoy with our international partners were instrumental in addressing needs that arose during the pandemic. Texas is better positioned today as a result of our perseverance and resilience during these challenging times. Thanks to your leadership, we remain globally competitive and continue to enjoy great economic growth.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS - Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez spoke about SpaceX and New Space in his recent virtual State of the City address.“2021 will be an exciting year for Brownsville and a year that we will begin to see the fruits of our labor. SpaceX has ramped up operations and the impact is very visible. So visible that we now have the attention of the world focused on Boca Chica," Mendez said."On Tuesday, March 30th, SpaceX launched its fourth high-altitude test of Starship from Brownsville. We understand that SpaceX continues to have expansion plans at the launch site and we look forward to working with them.”Mendez said the City of Brownsville is actively building a New Space ecosystem in Brownsville to attract more space-releasee companies. “New Space is projected to be a trillion-dollar industry by 2030 and Brownsville will position itself as a city that welcomes this industry and fosters innovation,” he said.Mendez said the arrival of Space Ventures in Brownsville is an “early win” in this effort. He said the company continues to expand its footprint in the city. “Space Ventures is a technology platform where new space companies can raise up to $5 million for their startup operations. They have hundreds of companies interested in the platform and we anticipate being able to bring some of those to Brownsville,” Mendez said.“If they start here that means they grow here and they are more likely to stay here for the longterm, bringing further capital, development, and workforce to our city. We look forward to our partnership with Space Ventures.”Mendez also made news in his State of the City address by announcing the arrival of the Space Channel.“Continuing the space front, I am excited to announce the City of Brownsville has entered into an economic development agreement with a space channel. Space Channel is the world’s only media channel dedicated to space news and entertainment. Space Channel has agreed to build its broadcasting studios in Brownsville, hire Brownsville talent and broadcast Brownsville to the world. We are excited about the decision to make Brownsville their home base,” Mendez said.Mendez noted that on March 30 a tweet from Elon Musk “caught worldwide attention.” Mendez explained:“Elon Musk tweeted that he was donating $20 million to Cameron County schools and $10 million to the City of Brownsville for downtown revitalization. More and more companies have shown interest in our city and we believe that the interest will continue to rise as more companies see the value of Brownsville.” Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.

U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Kyrsten Sinema and U.S. Representatives Henry Cuellar and Tony Gonzales have introduced The Bipartisan Border Solutions Act, in response to the recent surge in migrants coming across the southern border. The authors of the bill say the legislation would improve both the Department of Homeland Security’s and the Department of Justice’s capacity to manage migration influxes and adjudicate asylum claims in a timely manner, protect unaccompanied migrant children, reduce impact on local communities, ensure migrants are treated fairly and humanely, and ultimately deter those who do not have realistic asylum claims from placing themselves in danger by making the treacherous journey to our southern border.“I have seen firsthand that law enforcement at our southern border has been overwhelmed by this historic surge of migrants, and border communities are straining to provide whatever assistance they can,” said Cornyn, R-Texas. “With the Border Patrol estimating that this situation will only get worse, we must address this in a meaningful way that is fair to migrants seeking asylum, takes the pressure off of our border communities, and allows our Border Patrol agents to focus on their primary mission of securing the border.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.

Gonzalez: Cartels have made $1.2 billion this year delivering migrants into United States

MCALLEN, Texas Congressman Vicente Gonzalez says cartels in Mexico could have earned $1.2 billion this year through smuggling undocumented migrants into the United States. The McAllen Democrat arrived at this figure by multiplying 172,000, which is the number of migrants known to have crossed the southern border in the last three months, by $6,000, which is the going rate to get an undocumented immigrant into the United States. Gonzalez is urging the Biden Administration to process asylum seekers on the Mexico-Guatemala border. That way, he said, you “take cartels out of the equation.Gonzalez recently took a bipartisan group of congress men and women, known as the Problem Solvers Caucus, to the southern border. He followed this up by quizzing Ricardo Zúñiga, special envoy for the Northern Triangle at the U.S. Department of State, during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration and International Economic Policy Subcommittee.Another Biden official he questioned was Peter Natiello, deputy assistant administrator in the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, U.S. Agency for International Development. The hearing was titled, “Renewing the United States’ Commitment to Addressing the Root Causes of Migration from Central America.”Gonzalez represents the 15th Congressional District of Texas, Part of the district is on the Texas-Mexico border.“We do not have the resources to deal with 173,000 people who came mostly to my section of the border. It has really overwhelmed us and overwhelmed all our local capacity,” Gonzalez told the hearing.“What I have advocated is to have the same system we have in my district in a very humane, clean, first-class American facility closer to them on the southern Mexico border or the Guatemala border.”Gonzalez said he does not see an end in sight to the surge in migrants seeking asylum.“We are talking about climate migration down the road and maybe other countries down the road. What are we doing in planning long term ideas to be able to help folks closer to home and have these processing centers and maybe refugee settlements, or whatever it is, to help this mass migration that is coming north, further south and to keep them from coming through Mexico? Gonzalez asked Zúñiga.Gonzalez said he and a neighboring congressman calculated that, “just in the last 90 days, cartels have probably been enriched about $1.2 billion just from the migration that has occurred this year, at an average of $6,000 a head that they are charging.”Gonzalez said the United States should have same migration processing procedures it has in his district in place in Mexico and/or Guatemala.“Ultimately, I envisage actually having your asylum hearings in safe zones where we can ensure and guarantee their safety. I think we need to start having out of the box ideas or we are going to continue dealing with this on our southern border,” Gonzalez said.Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.Editor's Note: The attached podcast features the news conference Rep. EDINBURG, TEXAS - Dr. Ivan Melendez, Hidalgo County’s local health authority, has given his wrap-up on 2020, a year like no other for his profession. At times during the year, Hidalgo County led the nation in deaths and hospitalization rates caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Indeed, at one point, Melendez, a frontline healthcare hero, himself tested positive for COVID-19.While things appear to have settled down, Melendez said Rio Grande Valley residents cannot let their guard down during the holiday season. He urged everyone to continue to practice good personal hygiene, keep wearing face masks in public, to practice social distancing, and not gather in large crowds.“Our community was Ill-prepared. The world was ill-prepared (for COVID-19),” Melendez said, in his 2020 year in review.“The virus is like the marathon and you don’t train for the marathon the weekend before. When you are a boxer you don’t go to your wife and say, hey, babe, have seen my shorts I have a world championship fight next week. It doesn’t work that way. You have to be training, you have to be ready.”In an exclusive podcast with the Rio Grande Guardian, Melendez rattled off a number of grim milestones, noting that the pandemic was at its worst in Hidalgo County in July 2020.“Where did we fail? Our population was very sick. Our baseline state of health… despite being the No. 1 in diabetes, hyper-tension, morbid obesity, lack of access to healthcare, 20 percent un- or under-insured, a porous border to a third world country that is just chaotic, 29 being the average age in our community, it was the perfect storm. Despite that we were the worst among the worse.”Melendez said he cannot accept praise for a job well done. “When people come to me and say, you guys have done a great job, well, I don’t think so. I think we have made a great effort but you measure a job by outcome. You don’t say, oh my God, you have really tried hard to paint that house. No, you say the house looks good. We had the highest mortality rate.”So, did the efforts of healthcare professionals on the frontline in the battle against the coronavirus match the results? Melendez said, no. “Our efforts were gargantuan, but our results, you cannot argue… our results were not good,” he said.“And so, our lesson learned, from my perspective, is we need to have our community in a better state of health.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.

Rodriguez: Anzalduas International Bridge will be a 'game changer'

MCALLEN, Texas - McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez says Anzalduas International Bridge will be “game changer” for the Rio Grande Valley and the state of Texas - once it can take trucks carrying cargo. At the moment, Anzalduas can take empty trucks going southbound into Mexico. That should change soon, Rodriguez said, during a webinar hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership. The webinar showcased McAllen as a place worthy of commercial investment.“Our bridges are our way of life for South Texas. We are very proud to own two international bridges. We have a team of cities that have partnered for many, many years, on Hidalgo Bridge and Anzalduas Bridge,” Rodriguez said.“Anzalduas is really the future for us. It is a big part of the future of this region.”Rodriguez pointed out that Anzalduas Bridge has been open for about ten years. “We have only been able to have vehicular traffic go through it. And, in the last few years we have had empty trucks going southbound into Mexico. We are currently designing the cargo facilities,” Rodriguez said, proudly.“I will use something the mayor uses all the time: is just going to be a game changer.”Many of the listeners on the webinar were potential investors and real estate developers. Rodriguez explained why Anzalduas is going to make a big difference.“When we open up Anzalduas for cargo it is going to really, really, develop our region and our state. In McAllen, we realize that the bridges are much more than another revenue (stream). Anzalduas Bridge impacts the State of Texas and the United States,” Rodriguez said.By way of example, Rodriguez highlighted the parts that go into making automobiles. He said many of these parts cross the U.S.-Mexico border.“A lot of folks outside of our region do not realize that parts coming from Mexico, northbound, are going as far as Michigan, in order to put cars together, with parts made back here, across the border. So, Anzalduas is definitely going to be a game changer.”Rodriguez said a plan to develop Anzalduas so it can take fully loaded trucks is 90 percent complete. He said the plan will incorporate the Donations Acceptance Program, which allows municipalities to work with the federal government to fund infrastructure projects at international ports of entry. “It will be submitted through the DAP program, our partners with CBP, GSA and all the others that will use the facilities have been part of that design from the beginning. We did not want to guess what they needed. They have been around the table with us, designing this port of entry and we are very excited that we will be turning dirt on that in 2021.”CBP stands for Customs and Border Protection. Michael Covel speaks with Chris Ducker. Chris Ducker is a British businessman, the founder and CEO of Virtual Staff Finder and the Live2Sell Group of Companies. His new book is called "Virtual Freedom". Ducker and Covel discuss the definition of virtual freedom; how Ducker came from the cubicle originally, and how he got to be the location independent entrepreneur he is now; how Ducker became a “virtual CEO”; the idea of a “superhero syndrome”; the idea of a virtual, international staff; the process of finding a VA (virtual assistant); the two types of outsourcing; hiring for the role--not for the task; text, audio, and video communication; Tim Ferriss and the four-hour work week; and developing a location independent lifestyle.
