Have as many conversations as possible and get comfortable doing so. The sooner you adopt this mindset and openly discuss your ideas, the more clarity you'll gain. Talking things through with others helps refine your thoughts, gather valuable feedback, and shape your plans effectively. Additionally, it increases visibility—people will recognize you, understand what you're working on, and spread the word. The earlier you embrace this approach, the better. Many get caught up in the building phase, assuming that simply creating something will attract attention. But in most cases, success requires proactive outreach and engagement.

This week, we bring you a replay of one of our most impactful podcasts from last year, featuring Alex Cotoia and Daniela Melendez. Listen in as we discuss the EU Whistleblower Directive of October 2019. We'll return next week with one of our regular updates.Directive 2019/1937 of the European Parliament and Council dated 23 October 2019 on the “protection of persons who report breaches of Union law” (the “Directive”) is currently being implemented by EU Member States. The directive has broad applicability to organizations operating in the EU internal market and applies to both public and private sector organizations alike. Whistleblowers are guaranteed legal protection to the extent: (1) they have reasonable grounds to believe that the information reported was true at the time of the report; and (2) the whistleblower reported either internally to the organization, externally to a competent authority, or publicly. Private sector organizations with 50 or more workers are legally required to establish channels and procedures for internal reporting of EU law breaches and conduct appropriate follow-up. In this episode, Mike Volkov is joined by Daniela Melendez and Alex Cotoia from the Volkov Law Group, who bring their expertise to the table as they delve into the EU Directive and its implementation by several member states. Listen to this discussion to understand and navigate the complexities of the EU Whistleblowing Directive. The EU Whistleblower Directive shifts the burden of proof on retaliatory actions to the person taking the detrimental action, requiring them to demonstrate it was not linked to reporting concerns.Global companies are taking a proactive stance by increasingly focusing on robust ethics and compliance programs. This strategic move is aimed at mitigating risks and promoting positive corporate citizenship in today's economy, where adherence to legal and ethical standards is paramount.France signed the EU Directive into law on March 21, 2022, outlining protocols for gathering and handling whistleblower reports, including a two-month deadline for imposing disciplinary sanctions.Germany enacted the EU Directive on May 12, 2023, allowing anonymous reports and setting a three-month investigation deadline after receiving the report.Spain addressed the EU Directive on February 2023 by covering additional topics like occupational health and safety breaches. The directive established a three-month deadline for investigations and allowed anonymous reports.Italy transposed the EU Directive on August 4, 2022, including administrative, financial, civil, and criminal offenses not covered by the Directive, with a 30-day deadline to conduct investigations upon receipt of reports.Companies are advised to make resources available to conduct investigations quickly due to the short timeframes set by various countries' whistleblower protection laws.ResourcesMichael Volkov on LinkedIn | TwitterThe Volkov Law GroupAlex Cotoia on LinkedIn Email: acotoia@volkovlaw.comDaniela Melendez on LinkedInEmail: dmelendez@volkovlaw.com

We have games in Arizona, so why not over-react to a handful of At Bats and Innings.Rany Jazayerli (Co-Founder Baseball Prospectus/@Jazayerli) and Soren Petro (Sports Radio 810-WHB, 810whb.com/@SorenPetro) discuss the early returns from Spring Training and more...- Melendez goes 0-2 with a couple strikeouts.- Caglianone and Jensen homer!- Carlos Henandez knocked around.- Noah Cameron shows increased velocity.- Daniel Lynch impresses.- Are we sleeping on Gentry and Loftin?- Blake Mitchell out 4-6 Weeks.- Why not Alexander Canairo?- Is the NHL's 4 Nations the answer for baseball?
Watching KU get worked over by BYU was completely shocking to the system as it appeared the players just didn't care. It was awful. "Embarrassed" is the word Bill Self used and said of his traveling party, "we all need to get away from each other." This may not be the Titanic but KU's ship sure has crashed into an iceberg in the NIL era of college hoops. President Trump and Elon Musk sit down for a joint interview that was just incredible to watch. We'll tell you what they said and why it matters. Who are the pilots of the Delta flight that crashed? Here's a prediction, Canadian officials will now start pushing the weather as a problem before they tell us who the pilots are. Don't believe it. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly gets embarrassed with a veto override as Kansas kids will now be safe from unnecessary genital mutilation and puberty blockers. Mizzou has a huge test against Bama Wednesday night. MJ Melendez has a new swing at spring training. A high school in Maine defies Trump's transgender sports executive order and finger lickin' good is now a Texas thing.
Listen in to an oral history conversation with poet Maria Melendez Kelson, interviewed by poet Steven Cordova, as part of the Letras Latinas Oral History Project. Though Melendez Kelson's most recent work is the contemporary mystery novel Not the Killing Kind, this conversation uncovers her artistic life as a poet in the period before she embarked on her career as a novelist. Melendez Kelson discusses how her mother's imaginative summer incentive to pay her for childhood poems with ice cream gave her an early knowledge that writing could be a calling or vocation, how the solitude of wildlife biology fieldwork led her to befriend her writing, and her mission to share the important contributions of Latino and Latina poets to the body of works that advocate for honoring nature and our environment. Thanks for listening! Join Michael Jaco and special guest Michelle Melendez, author of The Great Maui Land Grab, as they dive deep into the untold stories and chilling realities surrounding the devastating fires in Lahaina, Maui. From the shocking lack of reconstruction progress—only 20 building permits issued out of 2,200 destroyed homes—to the alarming government attempts to seize land for "workforce housing," Melendez exposes the dark undercurrents of corruption and injustice. In this explosive episode, Melendez and Jaco challenge the official narrative, presenting compelling evidence of directed energy weapons, anomalies like melted cars beside untouched trees, and the tragic disappearance of countless children, with unreported death tolls far exceeding the official numbers. They connect these events to broader patterns of destruction, including California and North Carolina fires, raising questions about a coordinated effort to displace communities and implement so-called "smart cities."

Mary Jane currently serves as Chief Sustainability and Global Impact Officer at General Mills. She has reshaped global sustainability and philanthropy strategies unlocking unique value for multiple stakeholders. She was instrumental in the development of an innovative governance structure, establishing a new global impact corporate function, and building a long-range investment/accountability strategy to drive business and planetary impact. She engages deeply with the investor community and provides strategic updates to the Board and C-Suite. Mary Jane's accomplishments have been featured in many publications including Forbes, Greenbiz and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She is an in-demand public speaker with global media experience. Her colleagues value her thought leadership, independent point of view and collaborative, values-driven leadership style. Committed to lending her expertise and leadership to support related professional and community organizations, she currently serves on the Executive Committee of The Conference Board's Sustainability Council, WRI's Corporate Consultative Group, and the Board of the St. Paul and Minnesota Foundation. Mary Jane Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: General Mills' key sustainability initiatives: Reducing GHG emissions, advancing regenerative agriculture, and recyclable/reusable packaging Strategies to engage with farmers to adopt regenerative agriculture Getting leadership buy in for SBTI goals The importance of partnerships with key stakeholders and peer companies Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Mary Jane's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Give yourself a little grace and space. This work, it's not a quarter, it's not a year, it's many years. You need to be prepared for the marathon, not the sprint. The days can be really hard, but they can be really rewarding. So grace and space for yourself is really important. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am most excited about the promising outcomes that regenerative agriculture is driving for the planet, for farm ecosystems, for communities, and for farmers, and what it's doing for nature. When I stand on a regenerative farm and I see these bugs and birds and so much life, it's really cup filling. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? This is going to sound like a strange answer, but I would say The Alchemist, because there's something in there about the sustainability of the human soul that is really beautiful and worth reading. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? My favorite Go-to resources would be the Corporate Eco Forum. They have a plethora of research and information and latest emerging ESG rules and regulations, and also have created a really closely connected group of chief sustainability officers and sustainability professionals that I just have found invaluable in the time I've been in this role. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at General Mills? For General Mills, they can visit www.generalmills.com, that's our company website. There you can also see a global impact and sustainability page that will take you to the great work that the company's doing in regenerative ag, our sustainability report, our governance structure. For me, you can check me out on LinkedIn, Mary Jane Melendez.

Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
A Washington man has admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend and her 7-year-old daughter just days after being released on bond for domestic violence charges. Kirkland Warren, 28, pleaded guilty to the murders of Meshay Melendez, 27, and her daughter, Layla Stewart after their bodies were found dumped down an embankment in rural Washougal, according to court records. Warren, who was free on bond at the time, had previously been ordered to have no contact with Melendez. He had also entered an Alford plea to first-degree child molestation related to a sexual assault on Layla Stewart. An Alford plea allows the defendant to maintain innocence while accepting punishment. The investigation began on March 18, 2023, after Vancouver police responded to a welfare check at the Springfield Meadows apartments. Family members had not heard from Melendez or Layla for several days, and their dog was found alone in the apartment, barking. Investigators discovered that on March 11, Melendez, Layla, and Warren had stayed at an acquaintance's home. Layla stayed behind while Melendez and Warren went out. When Warren returned around 8 a.m., the acquaintance noticed Melendez unconscious in the passenger seat of his vehicle. Warren then went inside, retrieved Layla, and drove off with her. On March 19, Melendez's mother found her daughter's 2000 Chrysler 200, leading to Warren's arrest. He was charged with tampering with a witness, violating domestic violence orders, assault, drive-by shooting, and unlawful possession of a firearm. A search of the Dodge Charger, the vehicle Melendez and Layla were last seen leaving in with Warren, uncovered blood evidence in both the front and back seats, .22 caliber shell casings, children's clothing matching what Layla was believed to be wearing on March 12, and a purse containing Melendez's ID, according to police. On March 22, a passerby reported seeing what seemed to be two “life-sized mannequins” off a roadway down an embankment in thick brush in Washougal. Deputies responded and found the victims, who had been shot in the head. Court documents revealed that Layla was found naked from the waist down, and DNA swabs matched Warren's DNA. In court documents, prosecutors detailed Warren's attempts to cover his tracks. He reportedly texted a friend about getting rid of a gun and searched online for ways to clean blood from a car and “how to beat murder.” Investigators also revealed that Warren had transferred $4,200 from Melendez's account to his phone and discussed disposing of her car. At the time of the murders, Warren was out on bond for a 2017 first-degree murder charge in Arkansas, where a man was also shot in the head and left in a ditch. He had also been arrested in December 2022 for assaulting Melendez and firing into her apartment but was released four days before her and Layla's disappearance. Warren now faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on October 8. His sentence in Washington will run concurrently with his Arkansas murder charge. In a statement, YWCA Clark County CEO Brittini Lasseigne honored Melendez and Layla, expressing frustration over the system's failure to prevent the tragedy. "Deadly violence is not happening to others, it is happening to us," Lasseigne wrote. "We must use our collective voices to make lasting change." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
