Hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter, connecting remotely from Colorado and Kentucky respectively, discuss recent happenings in the bourbon world and taste a couple of whiskies. Jim is in Colorado Springs for a Derby party, having flown out of Louisville on Derby Day. He mentions winning an exacta on the Derby race. He is sipping on Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select 90.4 proof, the annual Derby bottle, describing it as a traditional Woodford. He notes that at the Derby party, they were making mint juleps with Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, and while not his favorite drink, he partook. He even helped make the simple syrup. Todd is drinking Penelope Architect, the third in their series. It's a straight bourbon whiskey sourced from MGP, finished in French oak staves, bottled at 104 proof, and retails around $65. Todd finds it nice, noting the MGP cherry character and a "funky oak" from the French staves. They discuss Lost Lantern's new monthly subscription service, which recently launched after they had previously speculated about something similar. The service costs $90 a month plus shipping for a different bottle each month, special sign-up bottles, behind-the-scenes stories, exclusive events, virtual tastings, and early access to new releases. News from Buffalo Trace includes an announcement that they are adding an EH Taylor bottled-in-bond to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). They speculate it will be a well-aged version and note that some EH Taylor bottles already fetch prices similar to BTAC on the secondary market. They express hope that these will be findable, perhaps requiring waiting in line as in past years. Other news includes the release of the new Wild Turkey 8-year 101, which is starting to hit shelves at an MSRP of $49. They note that 8 years is the minimum age, and it could contain older stock. They are looking forward to reviewing it and comparing it to the 70th-anniversary release. Whiskey Thief has released their 2025 Mayday Rye, a 7-year-old, 146 proof (hazmat) rye. It's available at their distillery in Frankfort and their new tasting room in Louisville, and they are now shipping to some states. The hosts praise Whiskey Thief's ryes. Jim mentions an upcoming interview and tour at Law's Whiskey House in Denver during his Colorado trip. He notes Law's has established itself as a pioneer in Colorado whiskey, particularly with their bottled-in-bond and American single malts. Jim's second pour is the 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey finished in Aspen wood staves and maple syrup barrels, the "M" release, at 122 proof. He finds it has a great maple sweetness and notes that 291 whiskies are generally easy to identify due to their unique profile. He mentions his son recently volunteered bottling and labeling at 291, noting things are going well for the distillery. Todd's second pour is Pikesville Straight Rye from Heaven Hill, 110 proof and 6 years old, retailing around $50. He considers it a classic and a great value rye. He recalls being introduced to it during an interview with Bernie Lubbers at the Evan Williams Experience. They briefly discuss the Heaven Hill rye mashbill used for Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig Ryes, noting different proofs and ages. They talk about recent trends, including the rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, which are exploding in popularity, especially with younger consumers. They mention that the largest distillery in the US is now producing White Claw. While neither host is personally a big fan of seltzers or most RTDs, they acknowledge the market demand and hope bourbon is well-represented in this category. They also discuss the growing trend of THC-infused beverages, noting that hemp-derived THC under 0.3% by weight is federally legal. They express confusion about the health claims and draw parallels to the initial marketing of vaping as a safe alternative to cigarettes. They mention a recent barrel pick they did at James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington for Bourbon on the Banks. They tasted three barrels and selected a bourbon, choosing one they felt would appeal more broadly, although they personally favored another with a great nose (vanilla icing, cake batter). They highlight the historical tour at James E. Pepper, discussing the distillery's long history and the role of James E. Pepper's wife. They note they also tried an excellent rye there aged 7-8 years. They discuss the recent move of RD1 Spirits to a new location and Macaulay Minton's Dark Arts moving into the old RD1 space, noting Macaulay's unique tastes and the interesting decor. They mention Sarah Algrim joining Macaulay. Beau Cumberland's Frankfurt Bourbon documentary is highlighted, with an upcoming screening on Friday, June 13th at The Foundry in Frankfurt, kicking off Bourbon Week. The screening is donation-based, with proceeds going to Frankfurt flood victims. Todd is the narrator for the documentary and receives praise from Jim for his narration skills. They hope to make the documentary more widely available in the future. Jim mentions researching a historical Shannon distillery in Shelbyville from the early 1800s. They recommend Beau Cumberland's YouTube page for short interviews and mini-docs on American spirits. Jim concludes by noting the pleasant "chest hug" from the 291 rye and acknowledging the late hour for Todd. Todd mentions a busy day with his son's soccer game. They wrap up the episode, encouraging listeners to find The Bourbon Road on social media and subscribe to the podcast. This week on Chill Filtered, Bryan is back from New Zealand and he's got stories to tell. Before diving into the pour, the boys catch up on everything from what “BuffTurkey” really means to how they successfully recovered their Instagram account after a hacking attempt. On Whiskey World News, Bryan shares a curious (and possibly real?) article about a new BTAC bottle. Is Buffalo Trace adding to the Antique Collection? Maybe. Maybe not. But the speculation is fun. And on “What Whiskey Would You Choose?”, Bryan asks: What's the longest-open bottle currently sitting on your shelf? Adventure, mystery, whiskey — it's all here on another great episode.

Send us a textIt's no secret that we, and the bourbon community at large, are massive fans of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. It's not often that we're able to taste expressions from the fabled series, but this year, Perry and Eric were lucky enough to taste not one, but TWO bourbons included in the lineup. Perhaps the two most coveted in BTAC, William Larue Weller and George T. Stagg bourbons are as rare and as coveted as bourbons get these days. But, how do their 2024 iterations hold up? Plus, the boys taste a 2020 Goose Island "Kentucky Fog" Bourbon County Stout and give their thoughts on it. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - William Dietrich, port director and CEO of the Port of Brownsville, says the South Texas-Northern Tamaulipas region is something special and unique. Dietrich gave an exclusive interview to Ron Whitlock Reports at the conclusion of a tour of the port by 45-plus business owners from southern Mexico. The tour was arranged by the McAllen chapter of Asociacion de Empresarios Mexicanos and COMCE Sur. “When I was at the BTAC meeting last week, I explained up there about how the border region is quite different from both countries. And what I mean is the distance between Mexico City and the border, and the distance of the border to Washington, DC., I think we've created our own culture down here and that culture interrelates amongst each other no matter what the national rhetoric is,” Dietrich said. “I think we've created a country within a country down here and understanding that our relationship, our cross-border relationships, are so strong that I believe it's going to be something that's going to magnify in the future and be something that we build on and we create this new economy down here in the Rio Grande Valley.” BTAC stands for Border Trade Advisory Committee. It is run by the Texas Department of Transportation, and it met two weeks ago in Houston. “I think I was received very well. It was very celebratory, and I think we brought a lot to the table. And most of all, we were able to showcase the Rio Grande Valley's port, the Port of Brownsville. I believe that statewide we are respected, and I think everyone's starting to see this potential and what's going on down here. We definitely have something spectacular going on.” Dietrich was also asked how much involvement the Port of Brownsville has with the automotive industry. He said it is mostly involved through the importation of steel. “We bring in 5.9 million metric tons of steel every year. That's sent off to the maquila industry, for the (manufacture of) vehicles, white appliances and all that. We do send some north,” Dietrich said. "I think we're going to see more as it relates to the vehicle industry. Some of the Pacific Coast ports, they're trying to find a nexus to the Gulf side. And we should be looking at bringing in container service within the next couple years. And a lot of that is going to be related to the automotive industry.” Dietrich continued: “About 90 to 95 percent of our steel is actually going into the maquila industry, into Monterrey, Saltillo, San Luis Potosi, and the other five to 10 percent is going north.” Asked if the Port of Brownsville will benefit from Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's decision to build a container freight rail corridor between the Pacific to the Gulf coasts, Dietrich said: “Absolutely. To be able to take advantage of what the west coast of of Mexico has with its naturally deepwater ports, to be able to bring some of that over here will be great. And we can definitely be a component of that.” In his interview, Dietrich also spoke about SpaceX's use of the Port of Brownsville, the new training center being built at the port by Texas A&M, and the port's new industrial park. Here is an audio recording of the interview: Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.
Let's take a look at this $10,000 bottle of Double Eagle Rare. There's no way I can taste this bottle considering we only have ONE, but compared to other ultra luxury offerings, I think this bottling steps up more than any others. For one, it's a great liquid at an age and proof worthy of the price point, but the presentation of the bottle, the glass blown eagle in the bottom as well as the glass decanter on top really set this a part. The last few years the Eagle Rare 17s at 101 proof have been some of the best and rarest of the BTAC collection. When you think a 20yr Bourbon is equivalent to a 40yr scotch and that MANY of those vintage dated scotch whiskies go for tens of thousands of dollars and are generally meant for collectors, a bottle like this is not out of the realm of what other like items in the market have fetched. That's not to say it's a bit much for the bourbon crowd who isn't used to seeing prices like this, but I think overall the presentation, for those with the means, is worth the price of admission.

Post a story and picture of your favorite whiskey glass on our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter pages (@BigRedLiquors ) for a chance to buy a bottle of 2023 George T Stagg! Or email me directly with a picture and story at support@bigredliquors.com. All posts and emails will be gathered and the winner will be announced on Friday, June 14th. My favorite whiskey glass is an engraved rocks glass with a heavy bottom I received 13 years ago for officiating a wedding for college friends on Mackinac Island, my first of four! I've tried hundreds of different glasses since then, but I always seem to come back to this one. I received four originally, and have only broken ONE, which is a pretty good record considering little kids in the house. I like it because it feels substantial and I know the perfect amount of pour because it's where the liquid meets the bottom of the "C" initial engraved in the glass. The couple I married are still together, and I'm still happily using the glasses they gifted me all these years later. What better way to toast the things that last!

What else is there to say? It's BTAC season! For this week, we taste and review one of the most revered bourbons in all of the land which is George T. Stagg. Coming from the annual release of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, this years version is a little over 15 years in age and clocks in at a blistering 135 proof. This bourbon is the shear definition of premium. Even though we were passed over again for media samples by BT, Kenny hustled his *ss off to get us this bottle. So, is GTS the standard bearer? The almighty? The granddaddy of them all? In years past, that's certainly been the case....but what about this year? You'll have to listen to find out. Tasting Notes: Not since Smooth Ambler was sending 15, 17, and 19 yr old MGP out into the world for under $100 more than a decade ago have I tasted a 15+ year old MGP, let alone a cask strength version at 98.1 proof!!! If you are planning to go out and chase Pappy and BTAC, hold up, because this year's 15yr Remus Gatsby Reserve may just be the ultimate spoiler. Nose of pure bourbon candy with complex herbs and sweet creams firing on all cylinders from the glass. On the palate, the perfect amount of old oak, dark and deepening at first with red fruit, then lifting mid-palate back to the signature sweetness and drinkability inherent in all MGP. Liquid candy corn! I never thought I'd see supply from MGP get this old again, but of course they're wanting $300 for it, but truthfully that's about exactly right in terms of price, rarity, and the market as it exists today. It's rare that a new bourbon release has an age statement this high, and even more rare when it doesn't disappoint for the price. Try one...well worth it.

MCALLEN, Texas - Brownsville Navigation District's port director, Eduardo ‘Eddie' Campirano recently spoke at a meeting of TxDOT's Border Trade Advisory Committee. In his presentation, Campirano spoke about a project underway to deepen the Port of Brownsville's ship channel, plus plans to build an industrial park and construct a liquefied natural gas export terminal. "Maritime transportation is critical to cross-border trade. It is the piece of transportation nobody thinks about," Campirano said. "There is no better example of that than the Port of Brownsville. Ninety percent of our business at the port is focused on trade with Mexico. Eighty-five percent of our rail cargo moves south into Mexico. So, it is integral to what we do."The BTAC meeting was held at the McAllen Convention Center. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
MCALLEN, Texas - Pharr Bridge Director Luis Bazan recently spoke at a meeting of TxDOT's Border Trade Advisory Committee. In his presentation, Bazan listed some of the improvements happening at the bridge, including construction of a second span. With four more lanes, the new span will effectively double the capacity of the bridge. Bazan said Mexico is already building its half of the second span. After his presentation, Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson asked Bazan to reiterate how much fresh produce the Pharr bridge crosses. The answer: Sixty-five percent of the imported fresh fruit and vegetables consumed in Texas. “That is absolutely phenomenal,” said Nelson, who chaired the BTAC meeting. Bazan said the new produce season will kickoff in October. He said Pharr Bridge Board is slated to host an Avocado Festival the same month. The BTAC meeting was held at the McAllen Convention Center. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
MCALLEN, Texas - The chairman of the Texas House Transportation Committee said he wanted to lay down some facts when he spoke before TxDOT's Border Trade Advisory Committee.State Rep. Terry Canales of Edinburg spoke about some of his achievements in the area of transportation during the most recent legislative session. He then gave a big picture view of the importance of the advisory committee.“I want to give you a bit of perspective. The United States is the greatest superpower the world has ever seen. That's a fact. Mexico is now our largest trading partner, as reported by all news outlets. That's a fact. That means this committee and the work that this committee does, probably makes this the most powerful Trade Advisory Committee on the face of the planet. That's a fact,” Canales said.“So moving forward, what do we do?” Canales asked. How do we fund the Border Master Plan?”Canales answered his own question. He said funding the Border Master Plan is should be the work of the advisory committee. "So I leave you with that. You are the most powerful Trade Advisory Committee on the face of the planet. And the work and movement that you do here will forge and form the future of not only Texas, not only the Rio Grande Valley, but the entire United States. "And so figuring out how we fund the projects that are in the Border Master Plan; I would challenge this committee to say we're going to find that funding one way or another. Through moving TxDOT funds, or however you do it. And build out the Border Master Plan over the next 25 years. It is possible. It's a challenge you should accept. It is incumbent upon us.”Secretary of State Jane Nelson chaired the meeting, which was held at the McAllen Convention Center. Nelson said Canales' remarks were “inspiring.”Meade's analysisAlejandro ‘Alex' Meade, the new Texas Transportation Commission member, also spoke at the Border Trade Advisory Committee meeting.Meade said he agreed with Canales. “This could not be a more powerful committee,” Meade said. “The State of Texas is the fastest growing state in the nation. We have the eighth largest economy in the world. And the only way we can do that is by having a strong border. Investing in the border is investing in Texas. Iggy, Michael, and Ken sample Eagle Rare 17 from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Does the 17-year-old version of Eagle Rare meet or exceed our expectations? Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com #Eagle Rare #whiskey #bourbon #BTAC (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection) #aging #oakiness #tannin #palate #nose #unicorn Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old Bourbon Review In a recent podcast episode, the whiskey enthusiasts from "The Whiskey Friends" took on the daunting task of sampling the highly sought-after Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old Bourbon from the BTAC (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection). This bourbon, sent to them by Mr. Robert of the Bourbon Real Talk community, promised a journey into the world of aged and matured whiskey. Let's dive into their impressions. Appearance: The Eagle Rare 17, a unicorn in the bourbon world, was poured into their glasses. Its deep, amber hue hinted at the long years it had spent aging in barrels. The color alone set high expectations. Nose: The podcast hosts were pleasantly surprised by the nose. They described it as reminiscent of a good bourbon with a subtle hint of mustiness. It was an inviting aroma, not overpoweringly oaky but carrying the promise of something special. Palate: The first sip revealed the power of the aging process. While the oakiness was prominent, it didn't overwhelm the palate as some other heavily aged bourbons do. There were subtle notes of pepper and a touch of fruit, with a faint hint of banana that added a unique twist. However, the tannin bitterness became more pronounced as the whiskey finished. Finish: As they savored the Eagle Rare 17, the conversation turned to the finish. It was described as fairly oaky, but the addition of a drop of water opened it up, allowing more of the classic bourbon flavors to shine through. Some found it slightly one-dimensional, considering the bourbon's reputation, but it was not a disappointing experience overall. Conclusion: In their collective opinion, the Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old Bourbon was not their favorite among the many they've tried. For such a highly sought-after bottle, they expected a bit more complexity and depth. However, the consensus was that it was still a worthwhile bourbon, and they acknowledged its potential for trading with fellow whiskey enthusiasts. In summary, the Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old Bourbon from the 2017 vintage showcased the power of aging, with a notable oakiness and hints of pepper, fruit, and banana. While it might not have lived up to the lofty expectations, it remained a respected member of the bourbon world, worthy of a spot in any collector's cabinet.

We have a treat in our glass this evening, the 2017 version of George T. Stagg. Stagg was the individual who bought the then Old Fire Copper Distillery from the legendary E.H. Taylor. He renamed the distillery in 1904 to the George T. Stagg distillery and carried that name for the next 100 years. Buffalo Trace is now the guardian of his recipe and tradition. Buffalo Trace describes it, "Uncut and unfiltered, this robust bourbon whiskey ages for nearly a decade and boasts the bold character that is reminiscent of the man himself." This sample came courtesy of our very own "Doc" who's been enjoying bourbon since his mom put it in his baby formula. We hope you enjoy our review of this rare, hard-to-find bourbon from the BTAC collection. Learn more about George T. Today we set out to find the answer to the question - "Can what you taste in a whiskey and whether you like that whiskey be influenced"? Though the results may be shocking, we totally saw it coming. Some whiskeys out there have a lot of hype. Some have a very high value on the market. Some are allocated and hard to find. But does that mean they are better than the more affordable, shelf available products? Are you being influenced? Manipulated? Let's say you're shopping for some bourbon and you see a 10 year bourbon, along with that same brand with an 18 year age statement. Wouldn't you assume the 18 year would be a better choice? It's likely a higher price point, so it's gotta be better right? Not so fast! In this episode we secretly double blind taste test 3 whiskey enthusiasts to see if they really prefer the taste of a higher aged bourbon. The results are pretty surprising!
