Rep. Kevin Kiley, who represents California's 3rd Congressional District, joined The Guy Benson Show today to discuss the ongoing government shutdown and the Democrats' refusal to support a clean continuing resolution. Kiley pushed back on what he called Schumer's "manufactured crisis," arguing that Democrats are once again trying to score political points with the far left rather than negotiate responsibly. He also called out the hypocrisy of Democrats denying that taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants is part of their platform, despite championing that very idea back in 2020. Benson and Rep. Kiley then turned to California politics, where Kiley sounded the alarm on Governor Gavin Newsom's latest effort to gerrymander the state and wipe out remaining conservative districts, using voter confusion to advance a deceptive ballot initiative. Congress is barreling toward a government shutdown and Democrats are weighing whether they should use their leverage in this negotiation. They want to extend Obamacare subsidies and potentially roll back some cuts to Medicaid. President Trump has threatened mass firings of federal workers in the event of a shutdown. With federal government funding set to expire at the end of the day Tuesday, one Nebraska congressman isn't holding out hope of avoiding a shutdown. Rep. Mike Flood, a Republican who represents Nebraska's 1st Congressional District, said Sunday that compromise with the Democrats, at least in the short term, seems unlikely. “Sadly, at this time, I'm not hearing about anything that gives me hope that we're going to be able to get past this, basically because Senator Schumer in the Senate says he's not there, the Democrats don't want to do this,” Flood said.

In this episode of ITR Live, Chris Hagenow and John Hendrickson cover a full roundup of Iowa political developments as fall elections approach. They open with a trivia challenge before diving into what's on the minds of voters, policymakers, and taxpayers across the state. The discussion highlights the upcoming release of the ITR Foundation poll, which will gauge the political environment, issue positions, and image ratings of Iowa leaders. Chris and John preview why this data matters—not just for campaigns, but for understanding whether Iowa taxpayers remain aligned with conservative policies like tax relief and limited government. They then turn to the recent leadership shake-up in the Iowa Senate, where Mike Klimesh was chosen as Majority Leader following Jack Whitver's retirement. The hosts emphasize the importance of leadership unity and how internal divisions—such as debates over carbon pipelines—could shape the caucus's effectiveness in delivering for taxpayers. The episode also explores the crowded race for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, the impact of Representative Mike Sexton's resignation and upcoming special election, and how Democrats are attempting to leverage special election wins to claim momentum. Chris and John push back on overstated narratives, arguing that the real driver in these contests is organization and turnout. Finally, they address local elections and ballot issues, including bond referenda and troubling reports of candidates being left off ballots due to filing errors. They call for reforms to increase transparency, protect ballot access, and give taxpayers more time and information when local governments propose major spending projects. The conversation closes with a reflection on the legacy of ITR's founder, David Stanley, and his enduring focus on government spending as the central issue for taxpayers.

On September 23, Congressional District 7 elected Democrat Adelita Grijalva to Congress and the narrow Republican majority in the United States House of Representatives is about to be slightly thinner. Adelita's win serves as no surprise in Arizona, but it still matters on the national scale. With her win, the GOP edge over Democrats will effectively shrink to two votes separating any measure from passing the House. Her role could become crucial in Congress' anticipated votes over the Jeffery Epstein files, government funding and more. They’re being targeted by investors who have figured out how to get rich by strip-mining local-news outfits. The model is simple: Gut the staff, sell the real estate, jack up subscription prices, and wring as much cash as possible out of the enterprise until eventually enough readers cancel their subscriptions that the paper folds, or is reduced to a desiccated husk of its former self,” the magazine wrote. Bottom line: I think the U-T’s journalism is worth $2,000 a year, if it were a philanthropic cause and I could afford that. We have lots of donors who make bigger contributions than that. In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica Levinson welcomes Reuters reporter Joseph Axe to discuss the intensifying battle over redistricting across the country. They examine Texas' unprecedented mid-decade redistricting push, California's proposed response, and the broader trend of overt partisan gerrymandering. The episode delves into what these changes mean for voters, political polarization, and the balance of power in Congress, highlighting how the fight over district lines could have lasting impacts on American democracy. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:What is Redistricting and Why It's Unusually Timely Now: The discussion highlights why redistricting is happening now, outside the normal decade cycle, mainly due to political pressure—specifically, former President Trump urging Texas to redraw its maps to increase Republican representation. The Texas Redistricting Battle: There's a deep dive into recent, unprecedented actions in Texas, where Republicans are seeking to replace a map they themselves passed just four years ago with one even more favorable to their party.Partisan vs. Racial Gerrymandering: Political gerrymandering is drawing lines to benefit a party (now effectively permitted by the Supreme Court), while racial gerrymandering—diluting the voting power of racial minorities—remains illegal, though often overlaps with partisan efforts.Follow Our Host: @LevinsonJessica
