Episode #1048 Pre-recorded today because we still can't access the studio due to work going on at the university. Pre-recorded episodes sometimes allow me to explore a theme that I've been thinking about and spin some artists and songs that you don't normally hear on the show. Today's show contains a lot of stuff outside of the usual folky singer/songwriter fare. I'm pretty sure that some of you will hate some of it, but I bet if you give it a chance, you might just hear something you adore. Today's show is an exploration of one offs and one hit wonders. These aren't your typical one hit wonders, these are either bands & artists that only released one project or an album or song that stands out in a band/artist's catalogue as being a bigger "hit" than the rest. It's very subjective and totally for fun and in no way meant as any kind of an insult to any of the bands/artists! After all, as the opening number tells us, one hit wonders have achieved something that very few do! These aren't major hits destined for hits compilations, they're beloved favourites that I enjoy revisiting over and over again. I hope that you will too! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-fM2

Show Title: “One-offs Matter” with Jen Manly Power Quote: “One-offs matter.” Description:Do you remember being a teacher? Or maybe you are an aspiring AP and you are still in the classroom. Either way, I want you to think about the relationship between the evaluation process, professional development days, and teacher growth. It seems like these are three related things, but in much of my experience as a teacher and administrator, evaluation, PD, and teacher growth were disconnected from each other. They were three distinct things, not three parts of the same thing. What was it – or is – like for you? Today, my wonderful guest and I are going to play with this idea. Guest Bio:Jen Manley believes that kids deserve to do BIG, meaningful work and that all students are worthy of learning that is fun, challenging, and fulfilling. She is passionate about helping teachers maximize their planning time to make time for what is most important while still providing an incredible learning experience for every student. She is a current college instructor, former high school and middle school computer science teacher, middle and high school curriculum developer, and speaker. Warmup questions:· We always like to start with a celebration. What are you celebrating today?· Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do? Questions/Topics/PromptsJen - my big thing is pushing admin to focus their work around supporting and growing teachers. Support = aligning systems to make it easier for teachers to focus on teachingGrowth = helping develop skills, knowledge, dispositions, and healthTeacher development should be teacher driven. 90% of the time admin should be supporting teachers in areas the teacher identified.I would love to dig into these ideas with you because I think you could offer such valuable perspectives. I am fine with being challenged if you have different view, I think that would make for rich conversation and I trust you. · Closing questions:· What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?· If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?· Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?· Where can people learn more about you and your work… Remember the four takeaways:· If we want to help teachers grow, we need to take things off their plates to create space for growth.· We may be handcuffed by law and policy requirements, but we hold the keys to use these requirements in ways that serve our and our teachers' best interest.· PD needs to include support for fidelity of implementation – if we don't commit to fidelity the PD is wasted time.· Asking reflective questions to teachers and listening to them is providing high quality PD. Sponsorship:I want to thank IXL for sponsoring this podcast… Everyone talks about the power of data-driven instruction. But what does that actually look like? Look no further than IXL, the ultimate online learning and teaching platform for K to 12. IXL gives you meaningful insights that drive real progress, and research can prove it. Studies across 45 states show that schools who use IXL outperform other schools on state tests. Educators who use IXL love that they can easily see how their school is performing in real-time to make better instructional decisions. And IXL doesn't stop at just data. IXL also brings an entire ecosystem of resources for your teachers, with a complete curriculum, personalized learning plans, and so much more. On this week's podcast, Andrea and Eric debated over what Hallmark mystery one-offs that we want to see more of. We always say that even mysteries that we didn't love should get at least three episodes to develop characters and build out the back story that typically just can't be accomplished in one episode. The mysteries we considered are from 2022 through April 2024, we have not had an official announcement of new episodes coming. These included:Cut, Color, MurderFrancesca Quinn PINikki and NoraFamily History MysteriesThe Jane MysteriesThe Dancing DetectiveMystery IslandAurora Teagarden (Prequel)Haunted Harmony MysteriesTrue JusticeGuided Newport MysteriesCrimeTimeCrimes of FashionWe had some agreement, some disagreement, and some wildly divergent opinions. Don't just use CRAFT now and then, or come and go from the practice. Learn the tools; let them get under your skin. Learn one thing at a time, and take it one day at a time. You don't have control over the big picture, but you do have control over what you're learning, practicing, and taking in. It's okay if it doesn't work immediately. Practice the skills consistently, and change can happen.

“What if instead of 25 clients in a year, you had a base of 5 clients you worked with over the course of the whole year? And instead of $5,000 per client, it was $100,000 or $75,000? You would have the foundation of a business that would give you peace of mind.” So many consultants come to me living in the land of one-offs. They might have 25 clients in a year, mainly doing one-time projects. One-offs keep you on the Revenue Rollercoaster, and they don't allow you to do your most impactful work. I too did one-offs for years when I first started, and what I saw was that the results my clients got wouldn't stick. There just isn't enough time in one-offs to get to the root cause issue and really solve it. I was missing out on the opportunity to make a bigger, more lasting impact, and to build a reputation for doing so. I want you to say no to one-offs—and that takes courage. However, if you keep saying yes to what you don't want, you're just going to keep getting more and more of it.
