On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this special encore episode, you'll learn what defines transformational engagements and what they could look like in your business. Most consultants do project-based work. They come in, work for three or six months, and solve a problem with a beginning, middle, and end. (And truthfully, we probably solve a smaller problem, which then leads to the discovery of new problems.) This can lead to ongoing work but ... it doesn't always. Transformational engagements are different from the usual way of working (and they can make your business way more profitable and joyful). What makes a transformational engagement transformative? What's your version of a transformational engagement? In this episode, we'll dive into what transformational engagements could do for you.Key areas: What to look for in a one-off engagement How to figure out what a transformational engagement might be for a client The problem with short-term fixes How long it actually takes to make changes truly stick The defining aspect of a transformational engagement Why transformational engagements last for no less than a year Figuring out the costs of the problems you solve with transformational engagements The kinds of problems that are incredibly expensive for companies Paradigms that my clients are shaking up for their clients The core of transformational engagements (and why it's valuable to your clients) There are all kinds of ways that you can do transformational engagements. We get ahead by leaning into what makes us different from business as usual.”Do you ever feel like the only way to get ahead in your business is to be a more masculine version of yourself? Maybe you find yourself downplaying your natural strengths because they don't fit the traditional business mold.Welcome to episode one of The Feminine Advantage: An Empowering Series for Women Consultants. At this time in history, we're witnessing the rise of the feminine. How do we bring that into our businesses? In a classically masculine field like business, there's a tendency to bring a ton of masculine energy in. Too much, though, can create a toxic work environment like many of us experienced in corporate settings; overly competitive, scarcity minded, controlling. Conversely, too much feminine energy can lead to passivity, a stagnation and excessive emotionality. These are, of course, generalizations and in no relation to gender. There's masculine and feminine in all of us! This special six-part season addresses the challenges and opportunities for women consultants. There are huge opportunities available to women now because let's face it, the old way isn't working for us anymore. It's time to do something new, and in the way only women can. Today, I'll help you learn to spot the signs of energy imbalance between your masculine and feminine sides, and understand the negative impacts this imbalance can have on your health and your business. You'll hear from other women consultants who will each share her one unique story of how they bring these energies into their business to achieve maximum personal and professional success. “Mindset is actually the greatest determiner of success, far more than skills or talents.”If there is anyone who's done a 180 degree turn on mindset, from thinking it was total nonsense to thinking it's absolutely everything, it's ME. I clearly remember the days I would think I don't have any limiting beliefs. Boy was I wrong. But the great news here is that it's completely possible to change that. In fact, it's imperative that you do. In my experience, mindset will get you further than skills or talents ever could. Mindset encompasses things like personal leadership and self-management, and your ability to get things done, resilience, belief in yourself, positivity, all kinds of things. In preparing for today's episode, I went through dozens of past episodes, out of the 200 total, that are dedicated purely to mindset – dozens. So it was hard for me to select just a few of them, but these are the ones that I felt were the most essential listening on this topic. We're going to cover self-sabotage, productivity tips, getting what you want and making yourself happy. We'll dive into the hermit archetype and what that means for your work, and we'll wrap it up with uncovering shame around money, and two revelations that came up in my 200th episode. “An escalation clause assumes that when the value you bring your client increases, your rates also increase.”A viewer writes, “Have you ever priced your engagements with an escalation clause that allows you to raise the price as the business grows, with your assistance, of course?”I love this question! An escalation clause is a sophisticated pricing strategy, so this is an advanced episode. I break down what an escalation clause is (and is not), why you want to use one, and how you present an escalation to clients. I also cover some frequently asked questions (so stay ‘til the end, for sure). If you've listened to Profitable Joyful Consulting before, you know I teach consultants to do value-based pricing, meaning we don't charge by the hour or by the project, but based on the value you bring your client. Similarly, an escalation clause assumes that when the value you bring increases, your rates also increase. It's an advanced strategy that requires you to have a track record of success, an incredible reputation, and the ability to be selective with your clients and to be able to communicate confidence in getting results. I don't want to be told what to do, or when to do. I want to have options and choices available to me.”How much is enough money to earn through your business? When can you say “Yup, I”m done. I've hit my goal.”? My answer may surprise you. Viewer Question: When is enough enough, meaning being comfortable with how much you make since it's more than you ever thought possible?First of all, yay! Let's celebrate that accomplishment. By the way, you're not alone in this question – and your success. In just one week, I had clients saying to me:I have more money in my bank account than I've ever had before, and a client is sending me a six figure check this week, on top of all of that. This is the most money I've ever made in my life. I've gotten to $52,000 a month, so I think I'm going to take a little rest for a while. This is incredible, right? Maybe you feel like it's not all about the money. I'm here to tell you sometimes it is. And I think it's really important for us as women to get comfortable with it being about the money. Here's the thing: It's important to earn a ton of money because it gives you all the things; freedom, options, choices, opportunities, access. And so knowing what's enough for you, it's a personal question and it's a really important question. Before you go asking others about your personal number, hold off. If you ask your peer group, everybody's going to have an opinion. If you ask your financial planner, they'll have some ideas for you. If you ask your partner or spouse, they're definitely going to weigh in. Even your parents might have a totally different idea. And if we follow what capitalism says, there's no such thing as enough. More is more, is more, is more. That kind of thinking can drive you until you're dead, if you allow that to happen. So we have to be really super aware of what is enough for us. And this episode will help you do that. -----------If you're ready to unlock your full potential as a woman consultant, increase your profits, and experience the joy of a thriving consulting business, subscribe and turn on notifications. In this episode, we'll go through exactly what you need to do to have a consulting website that will help you land clients.I was so excited to get this question from a viewer. “How do I turn my website from an expensive online brochure into something that's actually getting me consulting clients?”I cannot believe that in over 200 episodes, I've never talked about websites! Websites absolutely help us get clients in two key ways: Discovery. People will go into a search engine, Google you, or find a directory or a reference to you and land upon your website, and that's the way that they discover that you exist. Learn more. Find out what's out there, what they've tried, and whether you have a way to solve a problem that is relevant, resonates with them and makes sense.”This season, I'm answering listener questions. Today's is: How do I know my genius zone is what people need and how do I find my offerings and hone them and simplify them? First of all, these are great questions. I'm going to share with you some various ways that you can figure out what your genius is, and how it aligns and compares to what's out there. And then, specifically, share how to know which parts to turn into in-demand offerings. Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge that your uncertainty is what makes being a consultant scary. Do people need what I do? Does the market need it? Are there gaps? Figuring out what's available in the market from others is a natural part of self-discovery and also market research. Take time to network with other consultants to find out who's out there and what they're offering. That will help you get not just an eye into what the market is and what's available, but also connect you to other people who are doing the work. They'll reflect back to you what's possible, as well as the unique part of your genius to tap into. Pro tip: If you meet someone doing something completely different, it doesn't mean your idea is wrong, it means there's space for you to do your thing. That client's going to fire me. Am I healthy? Am I sick? Is the world going to end?” Let's talk about how to get your brain under control so you can get good sleep and build your business.Being woken up at 4:00 AM (or insert your own freak-out time here) is so disruptive to our daily lives; it's pointing to an issue that really wants to get our attention. It can happen while you're sleeping, or even while meditating, driving, or when you've just sat down for a little bit of peaceful time. It wasn't that long ago when I would have these periodic meltdowns with my husband where I would just say, “We're not going to be able to pay the bills. There's not enough money and the roof is going to fall in (our chosen metaphor for the time period).” One day, he finally called me out saying, “While you keep saying the roof is going to fall in, I can't help but notice that it's been literally years and the roof hasn't fallen in yet.” That, for some reason, broke the spell for me and I learned the tools to face the freak-outs head on. I would love to teach you the tools so you, too, can stop losing sleep and start building a better mindset. In this episode, we're talking about all the ways the 4:00 AM freak outs can interrupt our daily lives, what women consultants are most worried about, and what you can do to stop it. But today I'm answering it because (a) so many people ask me about it, and (b) there are some exciting developments in both professions that we should be talking about! So which am I: A coach or a consultant? For years, I always said consultant. I came out of corporate like a lot of consultants. I had a background and expertise that companies found valuable. Maybe they wanted to grow their businesses with a Coca-Cola-style approach or framework. I also believed that because I was more prescriptive, telling clients directly what they needed to do, that my work fell under the consulting umbrella rather than coaching. Also, there wasn't really coaching back then! But things have changed in the past two decades.
